Open invitation
You are an excellent editor and I enjoy working with you. I plan on turning these into Good Articles and you are invited to participate if interested. All you have to do is some tweaking of the article you may be interested in (pick one with no date) and nominate GAN, so you become the nominator (and then you can get credit). I'll be glad to resolve most of the reviewer's issues when the review comes up, as since I created the article I am most familiar with it.--Doug Coldwell (talk) 11:04, 19 March 2021 (UTC)
I have a proposal for you, if you would be interested. Recently the Finch article failed a GA review. Since then I have completely gone through the article sentence by sentence to make sure the references match the article. I believe it would pass a GA review now. If you would copy edit the article for grammar and style and nominate the article GAN, I will be glad to solve all the issues on a new review when it comes up. You would get credit as the nominator and I would get credit as the creator when the article gets promoted to Good Article. If that sounds attractive, then just do some copy editing and when finished nominate GAN. --Doug Coldwell (talk) 11:12, 24 March 2021 (UTC)

I appreciate your support and trust in my recent run for admin. IMHO, the Anita Sarkeesian page is an excellent example of what can happen given time, good sources, and a watchful group of contributors. Thanks for your help. I've had an interesting first few weeks and am learning a lot by being able to better watch (through tools) what admins do. Please call on me if you see making an error, or if you just need help. MMM is a ga now? Wow
So I just came back from a Wiki-sabatical and see Mountain Meadows Massacre is now at GA status. Wow. I think it was a bit before your time, but that article was a war zone back in the day. At least a dozen or so passionate editors have blocks from that article, and IIRC one or two have been banned. I gave up. I just assumed it would never be stable enough to pass a GAC. But that's the benefits of having fresh eyes on the project. You did what I had given up as impossible, congratulations.Dave (talk) 18:24, 3 December 2021 (UTC)
- Moabdave - From time to time I have seen it go through quite a bit of heat/fire/smoke, so yeah, am kind of surprised myself that I was able to get it to GA...such a sad event. I keep on eye on it, try to keep the article stable and free from...whatever trouble might come its way. The verifiable facts are disturbing enough without any sensationalizing or whitewashing needed. Thank you so much for the congrats, glad to see you back around these here parts. Talk:Dolly Parton archiving
Maybe you forgot, but you're the one who set up the archiving, here: [1]. I didn't look at it too closely but my theory is that it didn't work because you put it inside the WPB template. GA-RT-22 (talk) 19:26, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
- GA-RT-22 Ah, so long ago & 2021 just got over with... apologies for my edit summary. Lol, the page gets so little action not sure auto-archiving is/was needed but the reverse is true...auto-archiving will keep up with any possible stale threads when folks aren't around. You're right & thanks for fixing my mistake. Shearonink (talk) 20:36, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
- Auto archiving is great, but could you please consider defaulting to longer archive periods? Two minimum threads and 30d archive date make discussion nearly impossible on slower articles since not everyone can be here every 30 days. Short of an extremely busy talk page, most won't be hurt by letting discussions happen over time. That aside, thanks for taking the time to do this kind of maintenance in general. Cheers Strangerpete (talk) 23:25, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
- We should discuss this on the talk page, but I also think the current parameters are way too aggressive. GA-RT-22 (talk) 00:11, 2 January 2022 (UTC)
- @GA-RT-22 Oops, I should clarify I was speaking in general and not specifically just Dolly Parton. After seeing these defaults used on more than a few other talk pages, I thought I'd come here to ask the source to reconsider. Also I'm guessing the original 730 days was intended to be hours; one of the archivers uses that which equates to roughly 30 days, as I understand.
- I've seen plenty of discussions that were unresolved, or unnoticed for years but were still useful or get an answer later. I think think 30 days is arguably harmful if the page isn't near its max size. Strangerpete (talk) 00:37, 2 January 2022 (UTC)
- Strangerpete & GA-RT-22: I adjusted the auto-archiving and left it at ninety days...3 months. If you two think 90 days is being too aggressive, if you want to keep multiple threads with no replies around for whatever reason, have at it and feel free to change the parameters. Personally I think that 90 days is plenty of time...people happen along, post a question or suggestion and never come back to check or reply. Do I change things in an article if they make sense to me if an anon posts about it? Sure, I do it all the time. Does the anon ever come back and reply? Hardly ever in my experience, be it 30 or 60 or 90 days or whatever. Do named accounts come back or reply to a thread after 30 days? Hardly ever. After 90 days? Never in my experience. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen, just not in my experience. But if editorial consensus of the 660 Watchers and interested editors is to have a longer archiving time and to keep multiple threads with no changes for an extended period of time at Talk:Dolly Parton, fine with me. Any further discussion on this matter should take place on the article's talk page. Shearonink (talk) 01:35, 2 January 2022 (UTC)
- I appreciate your consideration, I think 90 days is far more reasonable for any article, thank you.
- As for thread replies, I don't think it matters if the original poster ever returns, other users can pick up the topic, sometimes well later, and I personally see that here constantly. Recent example, on Talk:Morse code someone posted about a discrepancy in September; I didn't see it until end of December. I realized I couldn't address their post directly but it raised another related issue which I put in a new topic. But due to the short archive duration and miniscule minthreadsleft=2, it bumped their legitimate post off talk the same day.
- I guess I'm suggesting that such a short duration maybe should be by consensus first, as a 30 day duration even hinders that discussion on slow articles. I hope you don't take my criticism personally or as an attack, I see your points but just disagree. No need to continue on though, take care! Strangerpete (talk) 02:10, 2 January 2022 (UTC)
- I misread the diff at Dolly Parton that you already had set 90 days, my mistake! I was still looking at the archive settings from other talk pages. My point remains, but I certainly feel the fool for getting my basic facts wrong. Strangerpete (talk) 02:20, 2 January 2022 (UTC)
- Strangerpete: No, 730d was intended to be two years. GA-RT-22 (talk) 01:46, 2 January 2022 (UTC)
- Strangerpete, GA-RT-22: I am closing this discussion. As I said previously stated, in this thread, on my user talk page, several posts ago...to keep things straight any further discussion about the archiving at Talk:Dolly Parton should take place at that particular talk page. If either of you or anyone wishes to change the archiving length or the number of posts left behind or whatever, be my guest. Shearonink (talk) 03:19, 2 January 2022 (UTC)

WP:GAN edit
Shearonink, editing directly on the GAN page doesn't do any good; the bot overwrites the page every 20 minutes, and your edit is already gone.
What you need to do is change the note field in the GA nominee template on the nominated article's talk page; it will then be propagated to the GAN page the next time the bot runs. I thought you'd want to know, so the note says what you want going forward. BlueMoonset (talk) 17:44, 1 March 2022 (UTC)
- BlueMoonset Ah, ok...thanks! I should have remembered/known that. Shearonink (talk) 18:16, 1 March 2022 (UTC)
- The main issue is that I wanted to put the Review Notice underneath the Note/Comment from the Nominator for visual clarity of the timeline - but after checking it sure looks like I can't...that Notice is generated automatically and not directly from the Reviewer(me). Oh well... Shearonink (talk) 18:22, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

If that's actually the case I was wondering if you would be interested in resuming a GA review for the William Goddard article. It was going along nicely, with all issues addressed, but at the last minute it was failed for reasons that are still a bit unclear to me. — Here is the review in question. — I believe at this point all issues have been addressed, and several improvements have been made to the article. If you're of a mind to, I was hoping you could complete the 'last nine yards'. Been waiting since January 21 for someone to complete the review, but for whatever reasons, no one has. The article has been stable and imo, is ready for another review. -- Gwillhickers (talk) 18:24, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

On 14 April 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Stephen Bishop (cave explorer), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Stephen Bishop (cave explorer). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Stephen Bishop (cave explorer)), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Can I ask for help with editing?
Hi, As an experienced editor, is it possible to ask you for assistance with editing an article? Thanks! Legalife103 (talk) 21:21, 23 July 2022 (UTC)
- Legalife103 - Thanks for the vote of confidence but I'm sorry - I really don't have time to do a deep-dive on Colin Singer. Also, if you have a conflict of interest with this person, meaning you know them in real life, or have worked with them etc then per the Wikipedia behavioral guideline of WP:DISCLOSE you should disclose that COI. It is perhaps possible that you could ask at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Colin Singer for the article to be converted to a draft in your userspace so you could work on bringing it up to WP standards for a WP:BLP. Good luck, Shearonink (talk) 01:22, 24 July 2022 (UTC)
So it's been deleted even though evidence of notability was found with reliable sources? Even though the Mill, a historic building in and of itself, still exists?
sigh.
Anyway, I am requesting that this now soft-deleted content be put into my personal Wikipedia space somewhere, I'd be fine with something along the lines of User:Shearonink/Draft for Klines Mill if that designation is kosher - I'll personally take the content over. I do not understand why it has been even soft-deleted since there was still an ongoing discussion with what I thought was clear evidence of notability but ok... Shearonink (talk) 21:25, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
- Done. Placed at Draft:Klines Mill, Virginia with full contribution history. I wish you well with it. Any questions, let me know. SilkTork (talk) 01:39, 4 October 2022 (UTC)

The Romany Rye
You recently removed a redlink from Exeter Theatre Royal fire, to the play "The Romany Rye" due to a lack of sources. I had originally taken the same view (and hence had not tried to WL it, which was done by another editor), and i agreed with the reversion, but the idea was annoying me.
It bugged me so much, I went and found some references. In case it is of any passing interest, I've started the article here: The Romany Rye (play)
Hopefully it is well enough cited, but any thoughts welcome. OwainDavies (about)(talk) edited at 19:24, 6 January 2023 (UTC)
- User:Owain.davies Oh man, I looked and looked and couldn't find a thing! Well-done. Since you've had more success than I did, perhaps you can find info on the various casts. If a notable/well-known/popular/influential/notorious female or male actor was in one of the productions that would help bolster notability. Shearonink (talk) 19:59, 6 January 2023 (UTC)

The Engraver's Award | |
Thank you for your beyond-the-call-of-duty work on Thomas Johns[t]on, the engraver. It is sad to see so many GAs biting the dust; I'm glad at least one now looks likely to survive. By the way that's the engraver Thomas Bewick himself in his tailpiece engraving ... and I think that branch he's holding is about to break ... Chiswick Chap (talk) 16:36, 28 February 2023 (UTC) |
- Awwwww, thank you so much. I felt so badly about this GA. I reviewed it and things slipped past me, as they all slipped past so many of us. Didn't seem right to me that this notable person's article could lose its GA designation - though I do completely understand the why...I think it will retain its present designation. Speaking of engraving, you should see the last source I got my hands on...I actually bought it used but it is basically a pristine copy. Turns out this book is so rare (and I believe it's out of print) that I am hoping to donate it to a local library's reference room. Shearonink (talk) 16:55, 28 February 2023 (UTC)
