New Page Review Newsletter No.10
ACTRIAL:
- ACTRIAL's six month experiment restricting new page creation to (auto)confirmed users ended on 14 March. As expected, a greatly increased number of unsuitable articles and candidates for deletion are showing up in the feed again, and the backlog has since increased already by ~30%. Please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day.
Paid editing
- Now that ACTRIAL is inoperative pending discussion, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary.
Subject-specific notability guidelines
- The box at the right contains each of the subject-specific notability guidelines, please review any that are relevant BEFORE nominating an article for deletion.
- Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves with the new version of the notability guidelines for organisations and companies. A further discussion is currently taking place at: Can a subject specific guideline invalidate the General Notability Guideline?
Nominate competent users for Autopatrolled
- While patrolling articles, if you find an editor that is particularly competent at creating quality new articles, and that user has created more than 25 articles (rather than stubs), consider nominating them for the 'Autopatrolled' user right HERE.
News
- The next issue Wikipedia's newspaper The Signpost has now been published after a long delay. There are some articles in it, including ACTRIAL wrap-up that will be of special interest to New Page Reviewers. Don't hesitate to contribute to the comments sections. The Signpost is one of the best ways to stay up date with news and new developments - please consider subscribing to it. All editors of Wikipedia and associated projects are welcome to submit articles on any topic for consideration by the The Signpost's editorial team for the next issue.

Hello
I was on the vandalism page but I can't edit it, did you remember this guy, 173.56.19.140, the one who kept emptying the article Breaking bar? Can you report him? Thanks, and sorry for disturbance. HueMan1 (talk) 00:10, 5 April 2018 (UTC)
- @HueMan1: Hi HueMan1, I have issued a final warning to the IP and the vandalism seems to have stopped, hopefully for good. But I will make a report to WP:AIV if the disruptive editing continues. Shellwood (talk) 00:20, 5 April 2018 (UTC)
Hi Shellwood, the change I made on Avicii's page was due to the fact that I did not feel the method of his suicide had to be mentioned, it is quite graphic and could be unpleasant to read. I understand that that's not necessarily a reason to omit it but the method of suicide is not in my opinion very informative, in this case it may be better to omit the details. I am a new wikipedia editor and am not in the habit of leaving edit remarks. I will leave the decision of whether to keep or omit the details up to your better judgement. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lmomjian (talk • contribs) 22:10, 3 May 2018 (UTC)

Yeah. If it served a purpose I would totally understand including it. But it seems senseless and unnecessary. But that's just my opinion. Thanks. Lmomjian —Preceding undated comment added 00:10, 4 May 2018 (UTC)

Trying to Correct Naming Convention for RED Digital Cinema Pages
Hello Shellwood,
I keep getting messages stating that I will be blocked with my disruptive editing. I'm honestly just trying to fix the naming conventions, because RED Digital Cinema names their products with capital letters. The way it is now (as lowercase) is not correctly matching how the cameras and products are named. Would you please let me correct any capitalizations, without being blocked? I can give you sources to show you how they name.

For fighting a wave of vandalism on the Cape Town International Airport article on the 14th April 2018. It must have been quite tedious rolling back so many vandals making so many attempted changes from so many different IP addresses.--Discott (talk) 15:53, 16 April 2018 (UTC) |

Hi There You reverted my changes to the Newfoundland Song "The Ryans and The Pittmans" I think you threw out the baby with the bathwater. Obviously the "bbbb" was a typo that occurred because of my finger hitting the 'b' by accident moving the pointer from the IBM speed ball on the keyboard, so sorry about that. However, the changes to provide a definition for "mainboom" instead of a link to an empty page were constructive, so I wish you had left that there, instead of reverting everything! Cheers

Torch / Flashlight
Wikpedia currently carries a US English Title and for this Topic and appears to be aggressively defending it. The Oxford Dictionary sides with Torch- a portable means of illumination, acknowledging the US word of "FLASHLIGHT" as an alternative despite this being used initially as a product description by manufacturer. Changing this would seem to be the correct thing to do. The word Torch, is, it seems , being adopted in US English to describe a Stick with with combustible material at one end, which is up to the US. However, if Wikpedia is genuinely to become a world resource, the world -wide name in use should take preference. Until this is the case, Wikpedia should carry a Language disclaimer at the forefront of any definition that the dominant content in Wikpedia will be US English and that the Definitions contained are only appropriate to The US. WIKPEDIA should also stop asking for donations from outside the US if they wish only to serve the one Language and region.
The same would be said in the Petrol vs Gasoline argument. More countries around the world say Petrol Rather than Gasoline but guess which one Wikpedia uses.
Often busy with Work.....? not when someone edits Flashlight though ???
https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/torch https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/torch
torch (plural torches)
A stick with a flame on one end, used chiefly as a light source; a similarly shaped implement with a replaceable supply of flammable material. The mob of angry villagers carried torches and pitchforks to the vampire's castle. THE US
(Britain, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa) A portable light source powered by electricity; a flashlight. - The Majority of English speaking Countries........
Ernst slipped and dropped his torch on the flagstones, shattering the bulb and plunging us into darkness. (slang, US) An arsonist. Short form for blowtorch or oxy-gas torch
- I call it a torch, but the name here has been decided as flashlight. The difference between countries/cultures is mentioned in the article; putting your opinion at the head of the article isn't the way to go forward. If you truly believe that it should change, you should go to the talk page and open a discussion; i can almost bet, however, without looking, that it has been tried before, and we have decided not to change it. Happy days, LindsayHello 15:39, 29 April 2018 (UTC)

Hello, from the Portals WikiProject...
You are invited to join the effort to revitalize and improve the Portal system...
The Portals WikiProject was rebooted on April 17th, and is going strong. Fifty-nine editors have joined so far, with more joining daily.
We're having a blast, and excitement is high...
Our goal is to update, upgrade, and maintain portals.
In addition to working directly on portals, we are developing tools to make portals more dynamic (self-updating), and to make building and maintaining portals easier. We've finished two tools so far, with more to come. They are Template:Transclude lead excerpt and Template:Transclude random excerpt.
Discussions are underway about how to further upgrade portals, and what the portals of the future will be.
There are plenty of tasks (including WikiGnome tasks too).
With more to come.
We may even surprise ourselves and exceed all expectations. Who knows what we will be able to accomplish in what may become the biggest Wikicollaboration in years.
See ya at the WikiProject!
Sincerely, — The Transhumanist 23:49, 1 May 2018 (UTC)

Any idea?
Hi,
Do you have any idea what this is about?
Acroterion has asked the user about this edit on their talk page but I thought I'd also ask you here as I have a feeling we're unlikely to get a straight response from the editor.
I wondered if it is someone's sock? The reason being is that they mention Courcelles randomly before posting randomly on the anti-vandal bot's talk page. Yet from the talk page history neither Courcelles or ClueBot NG appear to have interacted with the user before.
I'm just a little suspicious of them as the edit to ClueBot NG's talk page is very strange!--5 albert square (talk) 05:54, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
- I've been very suspicious of this account myself, best I can determine, he was an IP hopper who vandalised TV seasons and decided to create an account? Courcelles (talk) 12:31, 7 May 2018 (UTC)
- I did wonder the same myself Courcelles but posting "say hello to my little friend" on the anti-vandal bot's talk page is something a sockpuppet would be likely to post. 5 albert square (talk) 13:33, 7 May 2018 (UTC)

Beretta M1918 Edit
The page on the Beretta M1918 need to be eddited to remove WW1. No historian has found any proof the firearm was used in WW1 production of the firearm started in late 1918 If the Firearm had been used in the front some paper work would of been found by some historians on the weapons performance or at the very least there would be a paper trail of units being sent to the front we would know what unit would of hard them and what numbers. the fact we dont have those numbers say's it did not enter service till after the war had ended sicne we have documentation of those numbers after the war ended. — Preceding unsigned comment added by StrikerofLife (talk • contribs) 06:58, 11 May 2018 (UTC)
- @StrikerofLife: Hi and thanks for notifying me, the references[2] and here [3] does indeed state that they were introduced 1918, other than the lack of sources to verify this do you have any reference to another introduction date than 1918? Shellwood (talk) 11:25, 11 May 2018 (UTC)
A show called C&R Arsenal on youtube would post a link but Wikipedia does not permit youtube links are doing a show about all WW1 small fire arms used in the war. and as per there research and the research of people they use as sources witch includes Ian from Forgotten weapons . They were adopted in 1918 but did not see any battle time as per reports from historians. and trust me they been digging at any little use of a weapon on the front so much so the have an episode on the Krag because it saw service with 1 black line troop. it could of been adopted after the war it was just adopted at the time of the war. but adoption and serviced at two different things. The fact is no one has found historical evidence it saw combat or was actually issued to troops during the war. if your going to say it was issued durring the war a source would be needed not just the fact it was adopted the same year the war was on/ended. — Preceding unsigned comment added by StrikerofLife (talk • contribs)
- @StrikerofLife: I agree with you, adoption and a practical use are different things, as I see it the article needs more sources to verify the claims of its use in 1918. I think it would be best to template the article Template:More_citations_needed and start a discussion about this on the talk page. There is no outright ban on using youtube videos as sources, but in practice it is seldom done. Shellwood (talk) 13:16, 12 May 2018 (UTC)

Syntax got wrong. However, wanted to remove outdated characterisation of Centre party as Agrarian. How do you propose to proceed? Kent Ola Andersson (talk) 15:31, 11 May 2018 (UTC)
- @Kent Ola Andersson: Hi, the source states it as ex-agrarian yes, however the article about Nordic agrarian parties labels the party as centerist-agrarian based on different sources. There is no question that the party has moved away from its traditional agrarian ideology in many aspects. I have no problem with you omitting that part(although others might object) it would be wise to bring the issue to the talk page of the article before. Just be careful not to remove any other sourced content as you did before. Shellwood (talk) 15:57, 11 May 2018 (UTC)
Hi Shellwood
I'm not sure is I'm doing this the right way but I'm trying to start a page on Ron Stallworth, the police officer that infiltrated the KKK and is the subject of a new film. There's a lot of information available on him, and I moved the info on Ron Stallworth the football player to Ron Stallworth (American football). Meanwhile I need to work through creating the new page on Ron Stallworth the police officer and add all the sourcing. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. Could you please report IP 73.158.170.153 to administrators?
Hi, this IP (73.158.170.153) is persistently doing disruptive editing on UC Berkeley's page [[4]]. Could you please report this IP to administrator noticeboard to have it blocked? Or, perhaps, have the Berkeley's page protected? This IP and several other related IP addresses had been blocked for many times before. 128.135.98.172 (talk) 05:49, 21 May 2018 (UTC)
- @128.135.98.172: Hello, yes there is something disruptive going on here. The article is now semi-protected and the IP hasn't made any edits since their last warning so there is no reason to report them for now, but I will keep an eye on this. Shellwood (talk) 16:10, 21 May 2018 (UTC)
wiki
In this article yadavs are mentioned non elite it's untrue. Many yadavs are land owing and having high number of cattles with them. Many sources saying that they are chandravanshi Kshatriya. These word and some false quotes hurts Yadav community.
Today Yadavs constitutes 20% of India’s population and over 3% of world population-in terms of sheer numbers this translate to 20 crores or 200 millions. Yadav’s are the largest race in the history of the whole world. Out of 223 countries in whole world, there are only 4 countries including India with over 200 million population. It has been truly said that yadav’s are not merely a community but a “nation” in themselves.

- @Ravi58649: Hi, the problem with your last edit was that you removed a large part of sourced content without explaining why or seek an agreement before doing it. Was it really necessary to remove it all? Shellwood (talk) 20:46, 21 May 2018 (UTC)
OK I know I want to reedit this article with some new sources kindly remove the word non elite it hurts the ancient community Ravi58649 (talk) 20:52, 21 May 2018 (UTC)
- See the article talk page. It has been discussed to death. - Sitush (talk) 08:34, 22 May 2018 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.11 25 May 2018
ACTRIAL:
- WP:ACREQ has been implemented. The flow at the feed has dropped back to the levels during the trial. However, the backlog is on the rise again so please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day; a backlog approaching 5,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.
Deletion tags
- Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders. They require your further verification.
Backlog drive:
- A backlog drive will take place from 10 through 20 June. Check out our talk page at WT:NPR for more details. NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.
Editathons
- There will be a large increase in the number of editathons in June. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.
Paid editing - new policy
- Now that ACTRIAL is ACREQ, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. There is a new global WMF policy that requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.
Subject-specific notability guidelines
- The box at the right contains each of the subject-specific notability guidelines, please review any that are relevant BEFORE nominating an article for deletion.
- Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves with the new version of the notability guidelines for organisations and companies.
Not English
- A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, tag as required, then move to draft if they do have potential.
News
- Development is underway by the WMF on upgrades to the New Pages Feed, in particular ORES features that will help to identify COPYVIOs, and more granular options for selecting articles to review.
- The next issue of The Signpost has been published. The newspaper is one of the best ways to stay up to date with news and new developments. between our newsletters.

Continued messing around in business ethics
Hallo, you may want to do something more about the IP-address whose latest edits to Business ethics I have [just reverted]. PJTraill (talk) 12:32, 26 May 2018 (UTC)
- @PJTraill: Hi, the situation seems to have calmed down for now. If the vandalism continues consider filing a request for page protection. Shellwood (talk) 16:04, 26 May 2018 (UTC)
