Hello Sixflashphoto, and welcome to Wikipedia. All or some of your addition(s) to Mount Carmel East have been removed, as it appears to have added copyrighted material without evidence of permission from the copyright holder. While we appreciate your contributing to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from your sources to avoid copyright or plagiarism issues here.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college-level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. However, there are steps that must be taken to verify that license before you do. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are public domain or compatibly licensed), it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at the help desk before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you can, but please follow the steps in Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 13:41, 2 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

A happy new year to you! It's been a while since an update has been sent out to the Ohio Wikimedians User Group. Below you'll find a recap of what's been going on over the last few months, including annual reports and offline events.

General Updates

Information:

  • Phase 1 of the Wikimedia Movement strategy has concluded, and so far over 80 organized group have given their endorsement. If interested, please take a look at our User Group's talk page for more information, and to lend your support or opposition to the Ohio Wikimedians User Group endorsing the strategic direction by January 20th.
  • The Ohio Wikimedians User Group's Annual Report for July 2016 - July 2017 has been released, viewable here. The report provides a summary and list of events, with event pages providing more details respectively.
  • Wikipedia Connection's annual report for the 2016-17 academic year has also been released, viewable here. The report provides an overall summary, stats, acknowledgements, list and details of events, and more.
  • The #1Lib1Ref campaign is taking place from January 15 - February 3 this year! The goal of the campaign is to get librarians to add just one reference to Wikipedia. This is a great opportunity to outreach to local librarians you may know. See the event page for more information.

Recap:

  • Back in July, Ohio hosted its 2017 Wiknic at the Ohio State University. Four Wikipedians from Columbus were in attendance.
  • Back in October, Wikipedia Connection members Emery and Jon joined an edit-a-thon at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health labs in Cincinnati. It was a great success, with Wikipedians working with NIOSH scientists to improve Wikipedia's coverage of topics such as 3D Printing, Dustiness, and Nanotechnology. A shout-out to Emery and Jon from Wikipedia Connection for attending the event, and a special thanks to John Sadowski and everyone else at NIOSH who made this event possible.
  • Wikimania 2017 took place August 9 to 13 in Montreal, Canada, with WikiConference North America 2017 taking place as a pre-conference to Wikimania. Kevin Payravi and Emery were in attendence, both representing the Ohio Wikimedians User Group, with Emery also representing Wikipedia Connection. During WikiConference North America, Kevin and Emery presented Wikipedia Organizations on Campus: Case Study and Guide.
  • Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 in the United States has come to a close. Over 1,400 individuals uploaded more than 8,000 photos of historic sites to the Wikimedia Commons. Of these photos, over 150 of them were of historic sites in Ohio. You can browse the Ohio photos here. A thank you to all who participated and helped improve coverage of Ohio!

Using citation templates

edit

I saw Eric's comment to you about bare URLs on the article you asked him to look at. The easiest way for a new editor to add citations is to use the citation templates in the editing box. When you go to edit an article and open the editing page you will see a box that says "Templates" just above the left hand side of the editing box. First of all position the cursor where you want to add the citation, then click the down arrow in the templates box. Click on the appropriate template and fill in as much of the information as you can and if you want to use the citation more than once give it a short name in the "ref name" box. When you've entered all the info click "insert" and it will insert the fully formatted citation wherever you've positioned the cursor. If you want to use the citation again you just copy the bit that says <ref name="example"> and add a / to it so it ends with /> and paste it in where you want the citation to be. For more information on using the templates see: Wikipedia:Citation templates. Richerman (talk) 10:54, 24 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Richerman: I think I'm starting to get it, thank you! That was a great explanation. I'm known on commons but I'm sure I am a complete unknown on en:wp so to have all of these experienced editors such as yourself helping me learn these little things I'd never have known before, I really do appreciate it. If you have any other tips or suggestions I'm all ears. It's funny you wouldn't believe it but I've been using en:wp since before 2006 but never edited until very recently. So when it comes to article creation I am a complete novice and appreciate all of this! -- Sixflashphoto (talk) 21:54, 24 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Your welcome, I've had help from lots of people over the years. The way I wrote my first article was to look at other articles of a similar type and tried and see how they were constructed and then tried to copy that.

The other tips I would give are:

  • If you find something useful, such as a template you use a lot, store a copy of it on your user page so you can copy and paste it.
  • Use your sandbox to try things out to see if they work before trying them out in userspace - there is a link to it at the top of the page near you username.
  • Never put a tag on an article to have something fixed unless you've tried to fix it yourself first. For instance, before you put on a [citation needed] tag, go online to try and find the information yourself.

There's lots I still don't know, but if you need help, leave a message on my talkpage and I'll help out if I can. I'm usually on wikipedia most days but, as I'm in the UK in a different time zone from you it may take me a few hours to reply. Richerman (talk) 00:05, 25 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Richerman: Those are all really useful ideas. I've already started to look for better hospital articles to see how they are written out and designed. I've gone through normal Google searches and news searches and found what I can but I'm going to have to go even deeper. Other then photography improvements, I've made a few improvements to some local articles though I have decided to make Mount Carmel East my main project. I want to learn and if I make a mistake that's alright, I will keep working to get better. -- Sixflashphoto (talk) 06:47, 25 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
As they say - the man who never made a mistake never learned anything. Check out the WP:MoS too and especially WP:layout. Happy editing! Richerman (talk) 17:31, 25 January 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Mount Carmel East, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Interstate 270 (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Dublin Methodist Hospital

edit

Hello. I noticed your article on Mount Carmel East being promoted to GA and ending up on WP:DYK. I'm asking if you're interested in reformatting and expanding the Dublin Methodist Hospital article. FunksBrother (talk) 03:48, 28 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

@FunksBrother: Hello! I took a look at the Dublin Methodist Hospital article this morning and it does need some love and care. I can try to peck away at the prose and the infobox needs a lot of help as well. It's on the other side of the city for me so getting out there to take a picture could be a bit, but i'll find some reason such as some metro park to get me out there and try to remember to take some photos when I do. If you have any other article suggestions i'm open. No promises but I'll do what I can. Take care -- Sixflashphoto (talk) 12:10, 28 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Sixflashphoto: Ok then! I understand. I'll look at the newspaper archives for the conception of the hospital. I don't live in the Columbus Area anymore so it's not easy to take a photo of it. It's great to see another Columbus Area article end up on DYK this month. I contributed Picway Power Plant to DYK earlier in the month. Wished I could find a photo of the former power plant that's not copyrighted. :/ FunksBrother (talk) 13:17, 28 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
@FunksBrother:I've been pecking away at that article. I don't know if it can be expanded five fold for a DYK but it certainly can be greatly improved. It dawned on me that this week is the Memorial Tournament and that's a good enough excuse to get over to Dublin and while i'm there I'll get a shot of this hospital. I don't get myself south to Pickaway County often and power plants can be extremely difficult to take photos of (security) but if I get down there I'll keep it in mind. It's always great to meet another Wikipedia contributor from the Columbus area. -- Sixflashphoto (talk) 18:50, 28 May 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Sixflashphoto:The power plant was torn down, sadly in 2016. FunksBrother (talk) 19:30, 28 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

WikiConference NA - Submissions + scholarship apps due

edit

Hi there - apologies for the late notice, but I wanted to make sure Ohio Wikimedians are aware. Proposal submissions and scholarship applications for WikiConference North America 2018 (Oct 18-21 in Columbus) are due today (August 15). If you have any projects or ideas to share through a presentation, roundtable, etc., I encourage you to make a submission. If you would be traveling from out of Columbus to attend the conference and need funding for a hotel + transportation, $500 scholarships are being offered (apply here).

We have also started an accommodations and transportation guide for visitors here - if you have information and recommendations to add, I encourage you to edit the page.

I know some folks have expressed interest in helping out with the event. We'll have public information very soon for opportunities to help with logistics and sponsorship, as well as a sign-up form for volunteering to help out at the conference itself. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out to me. Thank you! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 18:10, 15 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

WCNA 2018 - Registration Open!

edit

Hello! Kevin from the Ohio Wikimedians and WikiConference North America here. As a quick reminder, WikiConference NA is happening Oct 18-21 at the Ohio State University Libraries. The schedule has been posted (more to come), and registration is open as well. If you'd like to attend, I encourage you to register as soon as possible - especially if you're interested in the pre-conference events, as they're filling up rather quickly. If you're on Facebook, we also have an attendees group for folks to coordinate travel, logistics, and ask questions. We also have a new volunteer coordinator, who is working on creating the on-boarding process for volunteers to help out at the event - you'll hear from me again when that's ready, if volunteering interests you. Any questions, feel free to reach me on my talk page. Thanks and hope to see you later this month! ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 08:17, 1 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

@SuperHamster:I wrote an email a week ago but haven't received a response. I am interested in volunteering but don't know who to get in contact with. I'm specificially interested in volunteering as a photographer if I wouldn't be stepping on anyone's toes but I am certainly willing to volunteer just helping out with busy work or what needs done. I don't have a personal facebook unfortunately not one I ever use in any event. With this coming in a week I am looking forward to it. • Alden Library at Ohio University also independently hosted an Art+Feminism edit-a-thon on March 22. Check out the event page for more details. Outcomes included editing 27 articles, including the creation of a new one.
"We will be encouraging participants to use our collections to create and strengthen articles, and Library volunteers will be available help them do this effectively. In doing so, we hope to encourage participants to move beyond the role of information consumer, and to consider how they can enrich the information landscape—and maybe leave the internet a better place than they found it," Jennings stated.

2019 US Banknote Contest

edit
  US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Upcoming and Ongoing Events

  • Cleveland Museum of Art Open Access Anniversary Campaign — January 23rd (today!) is the one-year anniversary of the Cleveland Museum of Art's Open Access program. To celebrate, we are hosting an editing campaign (with postcard souvenirs!) from now through February 9. Help expand and create articles related to the Cleveland Museum of Art (including artists and artworks featured in their collection), and receive a postcard from the Museum. If you'd like to participate, check out the task list and sign up on the event page.

Recent Events

  • In December, the Cincinnati Art Museum hosted an Art+Feminism edit-a-thon. The museum was an excellent place to have an edit-a-thon, with a café and staff who were helpful in setting up and ensuring there were enough tables, outlets, and plenty of resource materials available. There was a related exhibit, Women Breaking Boundaries, that was of interest to attendees. In total, 9 people attended.

Movement Strategy

  • The Movement Strategy document, with 13 recommendations, has been released and is located here. You may utilize each recommendation's respective talk page to leave any feedback you might have.
    • Between February and March 2020, the recommendations will be finalized, incorporating final feedback. By the end of March 2020, the recommendations are slated to be approved by the Wikimedia Foundation's Board of Trustees.
  • Kevin (SuperHamster) will be attending Wikimedia Summit 2020 on behalf of the Ohio Wikimedians. This year's Summit will be focusing on discussing the implementation of the finalized Movement Strategy recommendations. Please get in touch with Kevin if you have ideas and suggestions that you would like conveyed.

General Updates

I hope this message finds you well and in good health during these trying times. Below is a list of some online activities that you may be interested in participating in.

  • The Wiki Global Check In has started! This initiative is gathering check-ins from Wikimedians all around the world, and asks for a photo that captures something related to life in your context or part of the world during the pandemic.
  • WALRUS (Wikimedians Active in Local Regions of the United States) is now hosting virtual meetings twice a month on Monday evenings. This is a place to discuss anything Wikimedia, as well as a place for Wikimedians to come together and mutually support each other. The next virtual meeting should be on Memorial Day, May 25th. You can sign up for the Wikimediaus-l mailing list to stay up to date on all WALRUS happenings and to receive meeting invites.
  • Wikipedians have been busy documenting the pandemic. In Ohio, we have articles on the pandemic in Ohio and in Columbus (the latter of which was written by our newest Ohio Wikimedians member, !). If interested, you're encouraged to help update and expand these articles, or even consider creating articles documenting the pandemic in other Ohio metro areas.

View of Florence from San Miniato by Thomas Cole, an American painter who once settled in Steubenville, Ohio, and won third-place in a competition to design the Ohio Statehouse. This painting is in the Cleveland Museum of Art's collection.
  • If you miss visiting your local museums, don't forget that the Cleveland Museum of Art's entire collection is available online and in the public domain (when permissible). Our WikiProject Cleveland Museum of Art is currently tracking 44 English Wikipedia articles and 40,322 images, which are now acquiring over 2,000,000 views a month. If you're interested in contributing, there is still plenty of work to be done to expand and create new articles!

Movement Strategy

  • The finalized Movement Strategy Recommendations have been published! This is a clarified and refined version of the recommendations that were released in January.
  • The Wikimedia Summit 2020 that was to occur in April was canceled, and Wikimedia Deutschland will not be hosting a virtual replacement. In its stead, Ryan Merkley, members of the movement strategy core team, and external consultants are exploring options to move the contents of the conference into a series of virtual events.
