Tribune
Not quite sure how pointing out Tribune was a newspaper, not a magazine, until 2001 counts as biased. If it does I suggest you edit the Tribune page too, which confirms it. I used to be a subscriber to the publication and I can assure you it was a newspaper for many decades. 77.97.91.147 (talk) 15:07, 22 April 2021 (UTC)
- It's more of the part where you mentioned it was "left-wing". Snowmanonahoe (talk) 15:13, 22 April 2021 (UTC)
- That's its own self-designation. Left of the Labour Party, of course. 77.97.91.147 (talk) 15:30, 22 April 2021 (UTC)
@77.97.91.147:It still doesn't really add anything to the article. Just leave left wing out and say it was a newspaper. Snowmanonahoe (talk) 15:41, 22 April 2021 (UTC)- Yes it does. Tribune clearly regarded itself as representing the Left of the Labour Party: the banner in those days actually described it as a paper "for Labour and the Left", i.e. the left wing of the Labour Party and those beyond it. This is still its position: the current edition begins with an article called "Against the Centre." The Fabian Society was on the opposite side of the party: gradualist as the name suggests. So to move into both Tribune and the Fabian Society is a clear symptom of full-spectrum entryism, which was one of the distinctive features of the Vanguard group according to the article. There is absolutely nothing biased about referring to Tribune as a left wing publication: it's what it has always claimed to be. 77.97.91.147 (talk) 13:31, 23 April 2021 (UTC)
- Fair enough. I re-reverted. Snowmanonahoe (talk) 15:35, 23 April 2021 (UTC)

Dave McCartney & John McCartney
Dave McCartney is my GGUncle, he is not related to John McCartney. Dave, full name David Thompson McCartney was born in Cronberry, Ayrshire to Charles McCartney and Susanna Thomson....He did have a brother John, he went to Australia, did not play football. However his other brother William James McCartney did, Barnsley being one club, and John McCartney is in a photo we have of the club.....John McCartney was born in Glasgow to William McCartney and Margaret Brown JintyH (talk) 21:13, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
- @JintyH: To be blunt, this site does not care that he was your great grandfather. You still need a reliable source anyway. Find one, put it in, and no one will revert you. I'm sorry but if we allowed people to just change articles without some sort of proof the writing is true, this site would be rampant with hoaxes, incorrect info, etc. I understand that is probably not your intention, but it would still be a wide avenue for abuse. Thanks. Snowmanonahoe (talk) 22:57, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
I am new to this site, and won't be editing anything else! The 'reliable source'information, already published, is incorrect, and obviously haven't done their research. I have emailed them twice regarding it...I'm only a mere family member, who wishes to correct this misinformation. Being the reliable source, I have all the information in forms of Birth/marriage/death certificates, which I can't upload for obvious reasons! JintyH (talk) 03:31, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
I give up, the information can stay incorrect! JintyH (talk) 04:30, 1 May 2021 (UTC)
The Tale of Sweeney Todd
Hi, just a quick one. The IP editor was actually correct, it was set in the Georgian era. 1765ish if I recall correctly. Equine-man (talk) 18:08, 21 October 2021 (UTC)
- I know. I had a problem with their edit summary. I didn't revert it. Snowmanonahoe (talk) 18:09, 21 October 2021 (UTC)
- duh, I just re-read your edit. Sorry my mistake Equine-man (talk) 18:12, 21 October 2021 (UTC)
Hi!
I didn't mean my comment to be overly hostile or anything, I was just being honest. I spend most of my time on articles now correcting things like that; whether people claiming that certain early-Modern eras are medieval or that the Georgia era, powdered wigs and all, are Victorian, which is baffling. Thanks! - Mummy.
- Don't worry about it. Everyone gets a little worked up every once in a while.

- You seem to have misinterpreted the point of WP:NOTCENSORED. The focus of this policy is not about content being hidden to save face, but rather because content is offensive (i.e. nudity). I had assumed you removed that phrase from the article because you found it disturbing or something similar. (Apologies for that.) However, this is information that is supported by a reliable source, and therefore, it shouldn't be removed. Thank you for understanding. Snowmanonahoe (talk) 13:23, 26 May 2022 (UTC)

ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message
Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}}
to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:50, 29 November 2022 (UTC)
Rollback granted
Hi Snowmanonahoe. After reviewing your request, I have enabled rollback on your account. Please keep the following things in mind while using rollback:
- Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle or RedWarn.
- Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
- Rollback should never be used to edit war.
- If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
- Use common sense.
If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into trouble or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 17:17, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

Yes, strictly speaking, they're breaching policy by removing the shared IP template. But it's not really worth worrying about. If all they're doing is blanking their talk page then leave them to it. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 14:18, 23 March 2023 (UTC)

Recent changes
- The system for automatically creating categories for the Babel extension has had several important changes and fixes. One of them allows you to insert templates for automatic category descriptions on creation, allowing you to categorize the new categories. [1][2][3][4][5]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 4 April. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 5 April. It will be on all wikis from 6 April (calendar).
- Some older Web browsers will stop being able to use JavaScript on Wikimedia wikis from this week. This mainly affects users of Internet Explorer 11. If you have an old web browser on your computer you can try to upgrade to a newer version. [6]
- The deprecated
jquery.hoverIntent
module has been removed. This module could be used by gadgets and user scripts, to create an artificial delay in how JavaScript responds to a hover event. Gadgets and user scripts should now use jQueryhover()
oron()
instead. Examples can be found in the migration guide. [7] - Some of the links in Special:SpecialPages will be re-arranged. There will be a clearer separation between links that relate to all users, and links related to your own user account. [8]
- You will be able to hide the Reply button in archived discussion pages with a new
__ARCHIVEDTALK__
magic word. There will also be a new.mw-archivedtalk
CSS class for hiding the Reply button in individual sections on a page. [9][10][11]
Future changes
- The Vega software that creates data visualizations in pages, such as graphs, will be upgraded to the newest version in the future. Graphs that still use the very old version 1.5 syntax may stop working properly. Most existing uses have been found and updated, but you can help to check, and to update any local documentation. Examples of how to find and fix these graphs are available.

- The AbuseFilter condition limit was increased from 1000 to 2000. [12]
- Some Global AbuseFilter actions will no longer apply to local projects. [13]
- Desktop users are now able to subscribe to talk pages by clicking on the Subscribe link in the Tools menu. If you subscribe to a talk page, you receive notifications when new topics are started on that talk page. This is separate from putting the page on your watchlist or subscribing to a single discussion. [14]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 28 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 29 March. It will be on all wikis from 30 March (calendar).
Future changes
- You will be able to choose visual diffs on all history pages at the Wiktionaries and Wikipedias. [15]

Mentoring
Hi,
You've been assigned as my mentor for this article I'm trying to create for a series that I directed and produced for Netflix. I understand COI. And I think I've declared it as recommended by Wikipedia (could've totally goofed it up too). But could not figure how to go about creating the article as there was no preview option. So I'm not sure what I've been doing. Could use some help at this point.
Thanks,
Ashwin Ashwinraishetty (talk) 05:48, 18 April 2023 (UTC)
- Hello,
- The WP:Article wizard is the easiest way to make an article.
- I am warning you right now however. Articles for Creation (the group that will review your article) are very skeptical of articles written by editors with a COI. Your article will be scrutinized heavily (perhaps a bit too much). I wish you luck.
- (Don’t forget to add {{connected contributor}} to the top of the talk page of your draft.) Snowmanonahoe (talk) 11:20, 18 April 2023 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Babai Sen
Hello Snowmanonahoe, and thanks for patrolling new pages! I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Babai Sen, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: G12 is for pages with no content remaining to save. You may wish to review the Criteria for Speedy Deletion before tagging further pages. Thank you. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 19:08, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Ivanvector: The policy says any content not worth saving, of which this has none, as it has a list of works that was also copied from those sites and merely below TOO, a phrase without the beginning of the sentence, section headers, and list of unuseful routine coverage sources. The article doesn't even have a lead anymore. Snowmanonahoe (talk) 19:15, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
- For the record I encountered the page from AFD. Not that it really matters. Snowmanonahoe (talk) 19:16, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
- Basically, if the copyvio has already been removed, then the page no longer qualifies for G12. When there's not much left I normally move the article to draft so the creator has an opportunity to rewrite and resubmit, but since there's already an AFD it's better to let that play out I think. Speedy deletion shouldn't be used to shortcut discussions. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 19:25, 20 April 2023 (UTC)
- Makes sense. Thanks. Snowmanonahoe (talk) 19:26, 20 April 2023 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Last week, Community Tech released the first update for providing better diffs, the #1 request in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey. This update adds legends and tooltips to inline diffs so that users unfamiliar with the blue and yellow highlights can better understand the type of edits made.
- When you close an image that is displayed via MediaViewer, it will now return to the wiki page instead of going back in your browser history. This feature request was voted #65 in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey. [39]
- The SyntaxHighlight extension now supports
wikitext
as a selected language. Old alternatives that were used to highlight wikitext, such ashtml5
,moin
, andhtml+handlebars
, can now be replaced. [40] - Preloading text to new pages/sections now supports preloading from localized MediaWiki interface messages. Here is an example at the Czech Wikipedia that uses
preload=MediaWiki:July
. [41]
Problems
- Graph Extension update: Foundation developers have completed upgrading the visualization software to Vega5. Existing community graphs based on Vega2 are no longer compatible. Communities need to update local graphs and templates, and shared lua modules like de:Modul:Graph. The Vega Porting guide provides the most comprehensive detail on migration from Vega2 and here is an example migration. Vega5 has currently just been enabled on mediawiki.org to provide a test environment for communities. [42]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 May. It will be on all wikis from 11 May (calendar).
- Until now, all new OAuth apps went through manual review. Starting this week, apps using identification-only or basic authorizations will not require review. [43]

Problems
- Citations that are automatically generated based on ISBN are currently broken. This affects citations made with the VisualEditor Automatic tab, and the use of the citoid API in gadgets and user scripts. Work is ongoing to restore this feature. [48]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 May. It will be on all wikis from 18 May (calendar).

This is part of the progressive deployment of this tool to more Wikipedias. The communities can configure how this feature works locally. [49]
Future changes
- There is a recently formed team at the Wikimedia Foundation which will be focusing on experimenting with new tools. Currently they are building a prototype ChatGPT plugin that allows information generated by ChatGPT to be properly attributed to the Wikimedia projects.
- Gadget and userscript developers should replace
jquery.cookie
withmediawiki.cookie
. Thejquery.cookie
library will be removed in ~1 month, and staff developers will run a script to replace any remaining uses at that time. [50]

Question from Beanmaker (12:49, 21 April 2023)
Hi,
Very new to being an editor and only signed up so I could update my company page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_Water.
Just needed to add new logo and amend company name so the correct information appeared when it was scrapped for Google search results.
I included {{paid|employer=Uisce Éireann}} on my User page info and on the Talk section of the page I was editing. Wondering if that is the correct way to go about it. Finding it hard to get to grips with processes and norms to be honest. --Beanmaker (talk) 12:49, 21 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Beanmaker: You made a minor but understandable mistake regarding paid contributor disclosure. I have fixed it. As for the logo – to upload an image to Wikimedia Commons, it has to be under a free license, meaning that anyone has copyright permission to use the image for any purpose (in this particular case, note that trademark rights are not waived). You have two options:
- Get permission from your employer to license the logo under a license considered acceptable by Commons, details here. We will require you to provide proof of this; instructions here. Note that by doing this you are releasing the logo not just to the Wikimedia Foundation, but to the entire world, subject primarily only to trademark laws.
- If the above is undesirable to your employer, the logo can be kept in the article, under a claim of fair use. Note that this will result in the resolution of the logo that is used on this article being lowered, unless your company has an official SVG version of it. If you choose this route, I will handle it. Snowmanonahoe (talk) 13:02, 21 April 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for the quick response and understanding of how 'green' I am on this platform.
- I think if it is easiest I will request an .svg from the designers for you. Beanmaker (talk) 13:17, 21 April 2023 (UTC)
- @Beanmaker:
Alright, but again, please follow this process as well.Oh, I understand what you mean now. Never mind. Snowmanonahoe (talk) 13:18, 21 April 2023 (UTC) - @Beanmaker: When you get this svg, please do not upload it to Commons. Commons does not accept fair use media. I have sent you an email to the email you made this account with, so you have my email (it's in the reply-to line). Respond to that email with the svg attached. Thanks. Snowmanonahoe (talk) 13:23, 21 April 2023 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Citations can once again be added automatically from ISBNs, thanks to Zotero's ISBN searches. The current data sources are the Library of Congress (United States), the Bibliothèque nationale de France (French National Library), and K10plus ISBN (German repository). Additional data source searches can be proposed to Zotero. The ISBN labels in the VisualEditor Automatic tab will reappear later this week. [53]
- The page Special:EditWatchlist now has "Check all" options to select all the pages within a namespace. This feature request was voted #161 in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey. [54]
Problems
- For a few days earlier this month, the "Add interlanguage link" item in the Tools menu did not work properly. This has now been fixed. [55]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 30 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 31 May. It will be on all wikis from 1 June (calendar).
- VisualEditor will be switched to a new backend on small and medium wikis this week. Large wikis will follow in the coming weeks. This is part of the effort to move Parsoid into MediaWiki core. The change should have no noticeable effect on users, but if you experience any slow loading or other strangeness when using VisualEditor, please report it on the phabricator ticket linked here. [56]

- Gadgets and personal user scripts may now use JavaScript syntax introduced in ES6 (also known as "ES2015") and ES7 ("ES2016"). MediaWiki validates the source code to protect other site functionality from syntax errors, and to ensure scripts are valid in all supported browsers. Previously, Gadgets could use the
requiresES6
option. This option is no longer needed and will be removed in the future. [58] - Bot passwords and owner-only OAuth consumers can now be restricted to allow editing only specific pages. [59]
- You can now thank edits made by bots. [60]
- An update on the status of the Community Wishlist Survey for 2024 has been published. Please read and give your feedback.

- Starting on January 17, it will not be possible to login to Wikimedia wikis from some specific old versions of the Chrome browser (versions 51–66, released between 2016 and 2018). Additionally, users of iOS 12, or Safari on Mac OS 10.14, may need to login to each wiki separately. [63]
- The
jquery.cookie
module was deprecated and replaced with themediawiki.cookie
module last year. A script has now been run to replace any remaining uses, and this week the temporary alias will be removed. [64]

Recent changes
- The mobile site history pages now use the same HTML as the desktop history pages. If you hear of any problems relating to mobile history usage please point them to the phabricator task.
- On most wikis, admins can now block users from making specific actions. These actions are: uploading files, creating new pages, moving (renaming) pages, and sending thanks. The goal of this feature is to allow admins to apply blocks that are adequate to the blocked users' activity. Learn more about "action blocks". [82][83]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 6 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 7 February. It will be on all wikis from 8 February (calendar). [84][85]
- Talk pages permalinks that included diacritics and non-Latin script were malfunctioning. This issue is fixed. [86]
Future changes
- 24 Wikipedias with Reference Tooltips as a default gadget are encouraged to remove that default flag. This would make Reference Previews the new default for reference popups, leading to a more consistent experience across wikis. For 46 Wikipedias with less than 4 interface admins, the change is already scheduled for mid-February, unless there are concerns. The older Reference Tooltips gadget will still remain usable and will override this feature, if it is available on your wiki and you have enabled it in your settings. [87][88]

Question from Softsalami (06:16, 29 January 2024)
Hi I made an account specifically to create a page for an up and coming music artist who doesn’t have one. As a momentous follower of this persons work I would be honored and privileged to create his page as I was interested in learning more about him but there isn’t a page up for him currently. I plan on scouring interviews and podcasts to create an extensive and accurate page. Any advice ? Thanks --Softsalami (talk) 06:16, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Softsalami: First off, welcome to Wikipedia.
- Your first and largest challenge will be proving that the subject is notable. You will need to find reliable, published, secondary sources that cover the subject in detail. An interview isn’t bad; a podcast usually is. Help:Your first article has some advice on this (and everything else).
- If you think you’ve succeeded at that, go the article creation wizard for the next steps. Snowmanonahoe (talk · contribs · typos) 12:09, 29 January 2024 (UTC)

Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable. Question from Bulldog87 (15:22, 14 February 2024)
Hi, I made one edit when I joined earlier this month but the edit has not shown on the page since I added it. The edit was bona fide with a valid external URL. I cannot tell if there is something I did not complete or whether the edit has been rejected for some reason that is not apparent to me. Let me know please. Thanks. --Bulldog87 (talk) 15:22, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Bulldog87: Wikipedia generally avoids placing external links in the body like that. Snowmanonahoe (talk · contribs · typos) 15:47, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
- Well, there was an option to place an external link there so I did. How do you suggest that I provide this useful information to the 20,000 retirees who are mentioned? I am looking for help here. Thanks. (talk) 02:00, 15 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Bulldog87: If you think the organization might be notable, then you can wikilink it (create a link to the wikipedia article) by surrounding the name of the company with 2 square brackets [[like this]]. If you don't think that's the case, then there's no need to put anything beyond the name. Our readers are looking for information about Aptiv, and don't need to know everything about the DSRA—just enough to understand the context.NB You posted this comment while logged out, and revealed your IP address as a result. If you don't want it to be public, edit this page and replace the IP address with your username and then see Wikipedia:Requests for oversight. Snowmanonahoe (talk · contribs · typos) 12:54, 15 February 2024 (UTC)
- If external links are not allowed then that should be made clear. My external link was to a bona fide website that is of direct interest to the retirees mentioned in the paragraph. Bulldog87 (talk) 12:10, 16 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Bulldog87: I agree that Wikipedia is not very good at informing new editors of our 'rules'.
- The website is indeed 'bona fide', but we've come to the conclusion that throwing external links into the body like that doesn't have the reflection of an accurate, neutral, trustworthy encyclopedia. Snowmanonahoe (talk · contribs · typos) 19:57, 16 February 2024 (UTC)

Question from Jonknownothing (14:50, 17 February 2024)
What if I made an error while correcting on a page? Is there anyone like peer to peer correction before publishing? --Jonknownothing (talk) 14:50, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Jonknownothing: Anyone can revert an edit at any time. If your edit is wrong, this may or may not happen, because another editor might not necessarily look at it. If you’re unsure about something you’re doing, you could ask me or the teahouse. Snowmanonahoe (talk · contribs · typos) 15:55, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

Hello, I started creating an article to be published and now I cannot find it, do drafts in wiki automatically save? --Blue Train Marketing (talk) 10:31, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Blue Train Marketing: Unfortunately, if it doesn't appear if you go to the title of the page you were creating and click "edit", it's probably gone. That saving is based on cookies and is therefore only local and unreliable. Snowmanonahoe (talk · contribs · typos) 18:05, 19 February 2024 (UTC)

- The mobile visual editor is now the default editor for users who never edited before, at a small group of wikis. Research shows that users using this editor are slightly more successful publishing the edits they started, and slightly less successful publishing non-reverted edits. Users who defined the wikitext editor as their default on desktop will get the wikitext editor on mobile for their first edit on mobile as well. [94]
- The mw.config value
wgGlobalGroups
now only contains groups that are active in the wiki. Scripts no longer have to check whether the group is active on the wiki via an API request. A code example of the above is:if (/globalgroupname/.test(mw.config.get("wgGlobalGroups")))
. [95]
Changes later this week
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 27 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 28 February. It will be on all wikis from 29 February (calendar). [96][97]
Future changes
- The right to change edit tags (

Question from Stirfriar (19:05, 29 February 2024)
Hello, mentor!
I am new to the community. I have heard that many people who make edits find that their edits are reverted quickly. What do I need to do to avoid this?
For now, my intention is to clean up grammar, but I am also noticing some poorly researched articles that I want to work on in the future.
Yours, Stirfriar --Stirfriar (talk) 19:05, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
- Don't worry about edits getting reverted. It happens to everyone—all it means is that someone disagrees with you. Be bold! Snowmanonahoe (talk · contribs · typos) 02:21, 1 March 2024 (UTC)

Question from Stary1443 (23:44, 29 February 2024)
hey mentor! i had no idea that Wikipedia would assign me a mentor, so that's cool! where do you start when it comes to editing? is there a recommended place to start or should i edit only what i know to edit (if that makes sense...)? --Stary1443 (talk) 23:44, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Stary1443: There are a lot of things you can do here, and each of them caters to a different kind of person. Wikipedia:Task center is a good place to start. Snowmanonahoe (talk · contribs · typos) 02:23, 1 March 2024 (UTC)
