Article Feedback Tool update

Hey Spencer. I'm contacting you because you're involved in the Article Feedback Tool in some way, either as a previous newsletter recipient or as an active user of the system. As you might have heard, a user recently anonymously disabled the feedback tool on 2,000 pages. We were unable to track or prevent this due to the lack of logging feature in AFT5. We're deeply sorry for this, as we know that quite a few users found the software very useful, and were using it on their articles.

We've now re-released the software, with the addition of a logging feature and restrictions on the ability to disable. Obviously, we're not going to automatically re-enable it on each article—we don't want to create a situation where it was enabled by users who have now moved on, and feedback would sit there unattended—but if you're interested in enabling it for your articles, it's pretty simple to do. Just go to the article you want to enable it on, click the "request feedback" link in the toolbox in the sidebar, and AFT5 will be enabled for that article.

Again, we're very sorry about this issue; hopefully it'll be smooth sailing after this :). If you have any questions, just drop them at the talkpage. Thanks! Okeyes (WMF) 21:33, 1 September 2013 (UTC)

Your block

Hi Spencer, I noticed that on Sept. 14 you blocked user 66.177.121.106. I spent quite a while repairing some of this person's vandalism. I see they are back, and again making edits to all the same pages they had vandalized. Nothing like the damage of last week, just several incremental changes, and few with references. Very odd. Richard Apple (talk) 04:19, 17 September 2013 (UTC)

Richard Apple, the user was blocked for BLP violations, so using refs (as well as edit summaries) is a good way not to get blocked for that again. I'll keep an eye on the edits, but so far they seem fine. SpencerT♦C 04:27, 17 September 2013 (UTC)
Hi again. You may want to visit this users page again. More warnings, which he deleted from his talk page. Thanks. Richard Apple (talk) 21:06, 22 September 2013 (UTC)
Users are permitted to remove warnings from their talk page; it's taken that they've seen and understood them then. I'm not seeing abuse worthy of a block, but if you have multiple diffs that demonstrate the abuse, I think WP:ANI would be the place to go to make your case. Commons autopatrol

Hi Spencer, mind if I nominate you for the autopatrol user right on commons:COM:RFR? Although you only have 180+ edits there, you are still quite a trustworthy admin here and I believe your edits can be automatically patrolled there. Thanks. Jianhui67 Talk 11:30, 27 September 2013 (UTC)

User:Jianhui67, sure, but I'm not sure how often I would use it. Can you also nominate me for rollback? Nowadays most of the work I do is chasing copyright images from Wikipedia to Commons and there have been a few times it'd be useful. If not (I'm not sure if there are minimum eligibility criteria), that's fine too. Also I technically have more edits, they're just deleted since much of what I do now is speedy tagging copyvio images. SpencerT♦C 14:43, 27 September 2013 (UTC)
Sorry, I can't nominate anyone for rollback there. If you want rollback, go to Commons RfR to request for it yourself. I am an autopatroller and rollbacker on Commons and is reverting vandalism there. I'll go there and nominate you for autopatrol right now. I think you will be approved. I nominated Kudpung there too. He had 147 edits there and was accepted. Jianhui67 Talk 14:50, 27 September 2013 (UTC)
Done. Please go and check whether your request will be approved. Jianhui67 Talk 15:00, 27 September 2013 (UTC)
And also by the way, the autopatrol user right is the most common user right that more than 2000 people have currently. But only less than 500 people in Commons have the rollback right, though I am one of them. Requests for the rollback right there is rather lesser than English Wikipedia WP:PERM/R, where you can get 1 request at least everyday. Jianhui67 Talk 15:56, 27 September 2013 (UTC)
You do not need to go and check as your request has been approved by an admin in Commons. I have checked for you. And also,, congratulations for your autopatrol right on Commons. Jianhui67 Talk 16:21, 27 September 2013 (UTC)
Thanks! SpencerT♦C 16:22, 27 September 2013 (UTC)
Do you want the rollback right on Commons? For that right, you need to do some anti-vandalism work on Commons. Go to commons:Special:RecentChanges to revert some inappropriate edits. Please see commons:COM:Rollback. If you feel you have done enough anti-vandalism work on Commons, feel free to apply on commons:COM:RFR. I can't nominate anyone for rollback. Thanks. WikiCup 2013 September newsletter

In 30 days, we will know the identity of our 2013 WikiCup champion.   Cwmhiraeth (submissions) currently leads; if that lead is held, she will become the first person to have won the WikiCup twice.   Sasata (submissions),   Hawkeye7 (submissions)—who has never participated in the competition before—and   Casliber (submissions) follow. The majority of points in this round have come from a mix of good articles and bonus points. This final round is seeing contributions to a number of highly important topics; recent submissions include Phoenix (constellation) (FA by Casliber), Ernest Lawrence (GA by Hawkeye7), Pinniped, and red fox (both GAs by Sasata).

The did you know (DYK) eligibility criteria have recently changed, meaning that newly passed good articles are accepted as "new" for did you know purposes. However, in the interests of not changing the WikiCup rules mid-competition, please note that only articles eligible for DYK under the old system (that is, newly created articles or 5x expansions) will be eligible for points in this year's WikiCup. We do, however, have time to discuss how this new system will work for next year's competition; a discussion will be opened in due course. On that note, thoughts are welcome on changes you'd like to see for next year. What worked? What didn't work? What would you like to see more of? What would you like to see less of? All Wikipedians, new or old, are also warmly invited to sign up for the 2014 WikiCup.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to reduce the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. ITN: Man Booker Prize

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Man Booker awarded for a book and not to an author, which means the ITN blurb should rather be something like “The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton is awarded the 2013 Man Booker Prize.” --bender235 (talk) 17:26, 23 October 2013 (UTC)

Yes, it is awarded for a book, but the award does go to the author at the same time. (See the first sentence of 2013 Man Booker Prize.) I think if anything it's semantics, but the main issue is that the book article is a brief stub, which we did not want to feature on the Main Page due to its quality. Also, as the blurb points out, another aspect of interest is that the author is the youngest recipient, which is the fact that the blurb is based around. If you're still interested in bringing this up to wider discussion, feel free to leave a note at WP:ERRORS, but personally I think the blurb is fine as it is. SpencerT♦C 17:53, 23 October 2013 (UTC)
Okay, never mind. --bender235 (talk) 18:03, 23 October 2013 (UTC)

Prizes will be handed out in the coming weeks. Please be patient!

Congratulations to everyone who has been successful in this year's WikiCup, whether you made it to the final rounds or not, and a particular congratulations to the newcomers to the WikiCup who have achieved this year. Thanks to all who have taken part and helped out with the competition. While it has been an excellent year, errors have opened up the judges' eyes to the need for a third judge, and it is with pleasure that we announce that experienced WikiCup participant Miyagawa will be acting as a judge from now on. We hope you will all join us in welcoming him to the team.

Next year's competition begins on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; it is open to all Wikipedians, new and old. Brainstorming and discussion remains open for how next year's competition will work, and straw polls will be opened by the judges soon. Those interested in friendly competition may also like to keep an eye on the stub contest, being organised by Casliber. The WikiCup judges will be back in touch over the coming months, and we hope to see you all in the 2014 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! ITN candidate

Hi Spencer,

This ITN nomination has a 4-1 margin of support but appears to be going overlooked. If all looks good to you, it could use posting.

Best,   — C M B J   19:09, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

There's currently an AFD for the article; while it looks like it should pass, I wouldn't feel comfortable posting until at least the AFD has been closed. Also I feel that the article could be fleshed out a little bit more (haven't looked closely enough at the specific event though to see what could be added.) SpencerT♦C 19:22, 18 November 2013 (UTC)
I've seen a few over the years that were up with an AfD against them, and I think overlooking such nominations to some extent is probably a good approach (so there isn't an incentive to weaponize them), but I certainly understand your position. I've gone ahead and summarized the event at Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary in case that's a temporary solution you are comfortable getting behind.   — C M B J   20:07, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

I previously thought the Match sections were entirely unreferenced, but there's at least one ref in each. I suppose the whole paragraph and the summary box is based on those. Wish there were more but whatever. SpencerT♦C 21:11, 20 December 2013 (UTC)

Welcome to the 2014 WikiCup!

Hello Spencer, and welcome to the 2014 WikiCup! Your submission page can be found here. The competition will begin at midnight tonight (UTC). There have been a few small changes from last year; the rules can be read in full at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring, and the page also includes a summary of changes. One important rule to remember is that only content on which you have completed significant work, and nominated, in 2014 is eligible for points in the competition- the judges will be checking! As ever, this year's competition includes some younger editors. If you are a younger editor, you are certainly welcome, but we have written an advice page at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Advice for younger editors for you. Please do take a look. Any questions should be directed to one of the judges, or left on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will make it to round 2. Good luck! Cleveland

Spencer - Thanks for the feedback re my edits on Cleveland / Sports. In particular, thanks for pointing out the WP:Splitting policy. I was not aware of that. I'll also mention that the Cleveland article is quite long (135kb), so perhaps you and other Cleveland wiki folks can look for additional potential splits so as to make the main Cleveland article shorter and more readable.
