Deleting own page

Please, if you wish to delete your own page, please put {{db-author}} on it. Blanking the page confuses many people on RC patrol. Diez2 18:26, 12 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for uploading Image:Bridgetautism.png. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. MECUtalk 04:08, 16 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Unspecified source for Image:Bridgetautism.png

edit

Thanks for uploading Image:Bridgetautism.png. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then you need to specify who owns the copyright, please. If you got it from a website, then a link to the website where it was taken from with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 04:08, 16 January 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MECUtalk 04:08, 16 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Bridget Taylor

edit

Hi Squeaky,

This is mostly an attempt to head off you thinking that I hate you personally. It's not so much that I do hate you and what you've done, it's that the recent edits you've done seem to be mostly motivated by your desire to promote Bridget Taylor on Wikipedia. I'd never heard of her before you started adding info on her on Wikipedia. Now, that's not neccesarily a terrible thing as I am not omniscient, but there's lots o' people on Wikipedia who feel very strongly about it, there's even a policy (WP:COI). Another issue is the the creation of pages that seem to support the inclusions you're making (notably I'm thinking of the JABA page). A third issue is the user account User:69.116.161.83 who's contribution very closely mirror your own. If it's you forgetting to sign in while editing, that's cool. I always sign in 'cause upping my edit count gives me wood fills me with pride. If it's you being a sockpuppet to avoid being 'caught' editing, that's a no-no. It's also unnecessary, as your contributions are of relatively high quality barring tone and POV and wikipedia will definitely benefit from your contributions and knowledge.

Anyway, the best advice I ever got when I was editing one page repeatedly with malice o' forethought was to branch out and look around, edit other unrelated pages, etc. I found it really helpful and it definitely toned down my agenda-pushing, both deliberate and accidental. Lots of varied contributions (particularly if you add them to your watchlist to get a sense of how pages change, what's acceptable, etc) gives you a better idea of what you should do and what you shouldn't, and the appropriate tone of contributions.

To get a sense of how I feel about your contributions, think of someone adding to the autism article (assuming you hate chelation as much as I do, but substitute whatever therapy and promoter you hate if you don't):

One of the premier diagnsers and treaters of Autism is Dr. Bernard Rimland. Rimland published the book Infantile Autism which documents the origins of autism through heavy metal poisoning. This beautifully written, convincing account of a doctor's quest to effectively treatment his son has ignited a world wide interest in chelation therapy and Thiomersal poisoning. Previously, the world was unaware of the links between autism and heavy metal poisoning. This approach had been little disseminated outside of academia and a handful of medical centers supporting his therapy. Because of his work, his son is now developmentally normal.

Check out the Rimland page, see what you think and try editing it.

Anyway, ultimately that's just my opinion and I've only been here since August, so you can do what you like with it. If you'd like to reply to this comment, please use my talk page. It's easier for me to track that way.

Thanks,

First point is a very minor one - when you're posting on talk pages, use the "+" button at the top of the page to create a new heading at the bottom of the page. Most talk headings are in roughly chronological order of creation, so putting it at the top means I don't know where to look when I check my talk page. You can also edit the bottom section (or the whole page) and create a new heading (again at the bottom), using the ==Heading== and ===Sub-heading=== formatting. WLU

  • ... I'm not but I'd like to learn.

Great, stick around. Best way to learn however, is not to create pages (at first) but to edit a variety. When a new user's first acts are to create pages and then edit other articles to promote the page they created, it really looks like POV pushing, hence my long posting on your talk page.

  • As a user of the information provided here, I also hope that the subject matter is comprehensive, fact filled, current, and factual.

Ha! Edit enough and develop a large enough watchlist and see what happens. Editing wikipedia has actually made me trust the information here less.

  • I became aware of Bridget Taylor through a child with autism and did some research on her background. I found that she is widely considered to be the leading expert practicing the use of ABA therapy and that she is truly a tireless advocate for autistic children and adults.

I worked as an ABA therapist for more than a 18 months and the name didn't ring a bell, which is why I was so strict about the article. I even read LMHYV, but obviously didn't remember the name. Problem with the above statement - 'widely considered to be the leading expert..." - by who? If it's by you, that's POV. Every single article on wikipedia should pass WP:Notability; there's a sub-page for Wikipedia:Notability (academics), which she would fall into. Read the criteria and decide if she fits.

  • When the parents of child get the dreaded diagnosis of autism, they tend to search for everything and anything in their power to help their child. I've learned in my research that Taylor 's work and practice are of the utmost importance, especially to the parents of very young children first diagnosed.

Sure, but what's more important, that they know about Bridget Taylor, or that they know about ABA? Big diff. They are not going to get Bridget Taylor as their clinical supervisor, but they should know about ABA.

  • The Alpine Learning Group is arguably (but not many would argue the point) the best placement for an autistic child in the country.

I would argue that. Also, note that wikipedia is international. I'm writing this from Canada. Being the best place in the US doesn't mean as much if someone's reading this from Nairobi, or Australia, or the People's Republic of China, or the Republic of China for that matter. In those cases, info about ABA is better than info about the best treatment centre that is unavailable to them. Anyway, if you want to put that it's one of the best treatement centres in the states, you have to reference it, and it has to be a good reference - can't use local papers.

  • So given what I had learned from my research I just thought it was very important to growing segment of the population that Taylor just be listed in wikipedia. Honestly, I'm without agenda. In fact, I'm not a "fan" of ABA therapy. It is, however, the only scientific method proven to help autisic children learn. Which is a valuable thing.

Yup, totally agree.

  • So, to me, it seems very important to use what we have available (ABA therapy) so that child, all autistic children make the strides they are able to make in learning, enabled by ABA therapy.

Notice how in your sentence, you discuss ABA but not Taylor. I'm not being snotty here (I'm not trying anyway, I may still come across that way though), but it's ABA that's important, less so the actual practitioners. Again, I urge you to read Wikipedia:Notability (academics), the policy pages are quite good, and do a great job of explaining what can and can't be added, what works and what doesn't.

  • So there you have it. My agenda: to add to the information available to those interested in a person who has made large contributions to the education of children with autism. Oh yeah, I wasn't sockpuppeting I just forgot to sign in. I'll get better at this I promise. Wikipedia is a very important resource to me and if I can help in some small ways to contribute to it, I must.

Great, stick around and start looking for things to improve. It's fun! There's a lot of work related to autism, and if you've got the references to back it up, be bold! Even just giving pages you are new to a thorough read-through can help a lot - information is added willy-nilly many times, and there can be duplication, info in the intro paragraphs that shouldn't be there, spelling mistakes, what have you. Those kind of edits are very helpful, get you up to speed on the articles, and are a good place to sharpen your skills. RE:signing in, pick a bunch of pages that you are interested in, and add them to your watchlist. This'll get you into the habit of logging in, so you can see what changes have been made to them. Darwin is a really busy page, and you can watch for vandalism. I always feel tremendously righteous every time I revert vandalism. It's sweet.

  • I see how angry people get when they get edited but seriously I stand with you on every edit you made to the Bridget Taylor article. You know Ernest Hemingway said "the first draft of anything is shit." I think he understood about writing. And of course, it's true. So my article was a first draft really and you are a great editor. I'm in your debt. Squeaky2 07:10, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

I'd blush, but eh. Incidentally, I'm still contemplating nominating the article for deletion. Since you are invested in the page and are more familiar with BT than I am, read up on the notability guidelines and see if you can meet any of them. Otherwise, you might want to try nominating it, see what kind of response you get. Someone else might find a reason to keep it.

If you're serious about sticking on wikipedia and want to steepen your learning curve, you might try Wikipedia:Adopt-a-User, as well as reading up on the links found in the welcome template (at the top of this page). One other thing I find still true about my wikipedia experience is my five stages of wikipedia, on my user page. But at this point I'm just fishing for compliments. Biographies.

edit

If you are going to be editing biographies like Taylor and Paley, you really, really need to read WP:BIO. Bios without sources are horrible, horrible things and (again) can be deleted. WLU 13:05, 30 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, actually I know Andy Paley personally so I know those facts to be true and I thought I'd toss them in because his bio was seriously lacking in who he really is. I forgot to add that his first band was the Sidewiinders and they toured with Shaun Cassidy. I promise you I don't take biographies lightly, which is why I put the into in about Andy. The bio on him had no information that was relevent to who he actually is. I don't care if it's deleted, it's still the most true thing about him. And there is something to be said for facts that have been long forgotten.

Speaking of which, another personal friend of mine Joan Jett. Her wiki page is really quite comprehensive and accurate but there is one little known but very important fact missing. Years back when she was in the Runaways she saved a child from drowning in the Pacific Ocean. Just her walking on the beach alone. It was highly publicized at the time, but I can no longer find any reference to it. But again, a very important fact which may forever be lost and I guarantee it is true. Call her, ask her. It's true. But that's the only documentation I'd be able to provide.

By the way, since we're conversing on a minute by minute basis, I'm with you. Civility rules! So in case you're interested, my name is Diane. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Squeaky2 (talkcontribs)

Problem with adding info that can only be verified by the source is everyone who reads the WP biography would have to call Joan Jett/Andy Paley/Terry Goodkind and ask if it was true, which is why there are such strict rules on adding info to biographies. Anyone could add info to the page about participation in satanic rituals and/or their tears curing cancer (or more innocuous items such as who they are dating, their stance on abortion, etc.), saying they talked to the person and it's true. Given the public nature of wikipedia and the ability of anyone to edit, biographies are really twitchy to add info to. It's all in the policy and it makes good sense.
Dont' forget to sign with ~~~~, otherwise it gets hard to know who added what comment. WLU 15:02, 31 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Diane DiPiaza

Hello Squeaky2,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Diane DiPiaza for deletion, because it doesn't appear to contain any encyclopedic content. Take a look at our suggestions for essential content in short articles to learn what should be included.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.
