Coxeter-Dynkin diagrams

I moved your test images to Talk:Coxeter-Dynkin diagram and tried printing a page, on a nice 1200dpi laser printer, and really svg results don't look better than the pixel ones, actually worse. The printer dithers the grayscale boundary colors and it just looks fuzzy. Is there any way to disable grayscale/antialiasing for svg conversion to png? I mean I have no idea at all, could be an issue with the SVG format or with the PNG renderer. Tom Ruen 07:34, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

Hey, thanks for creating Image:Rugby Union blank line ups.svg. I was wondering if it was possible to be able to specify different names for the positions? There are alternative names depending on where you live (see Rugby union positions). It's certainly possible to have different names, but as far as I know, each version would require a different SVG file, and I'm pretty sure that wikilinks from within an image are not possible. That said, Template:Football lineup seems to have all kinds of crazy stuff going on - although I can't see where it's been used to see what it does. Stannered 22:56, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

St Anne's College

Hi Stannered. On reflection, I may well have been too harsh in my rating. It does fulfil the loose Start-class criteria of an adequate picture and "a subheading that fully treats and element of the topic" ie. location. So I will upgrade the rating. Areas for improvement:

• expanding the history of the college
• a few more pictures
• sections (or at least the start of sections) on college traditions (such as the college grace, and the coat of arms) and student life - what is St Anne's famous for among students

argument map typos and image format change over

Thanks for fixing the SVG typos in Image:Traffic congestion straw man.svg. I just uploaded another version of the file in PNG format because I can't save as SVG. I made some other minor corrections in addition to the typos and changed the licensing to GDFL(I figured as the author I could do what I wanted and someone could only use the original licensing with the original file). Now no articles link to the svg one, just to Image:Traffic congestion straw man.png, so I am considering having an admin delete the svg version along with all of the jpeg versions of my other argument maps once I have converted them to PNG. I know that the SVG format is slightly more efficient, but I may make some minor corrections to them (for logical structure) as well as fix any typos.

I noticed as well that you placed a transparent background with the image, it looks much nicer so I will do the same from now on with my conversions. Grumpyyoungman01 09:32, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

I converted the map to SVG because it was requested on the image page... deleting again would be counterproductive (and wasting my time). SVG files are dead easy to edit - download Inkscape from www.inkscape.org. Text editing is a matter of clicking the text with the text tool and retyping. Regarding licensing, I'm not sure it's possible to withdraw an image from the public domain once you've released it to it. If you let me know exactly where the changes are (if they're not easy text edits), I can make them in the SVG file for you. Stannered 09:58, 20 April 2007 (UTC)

Stannered, thanks for converting Image:Polytope model unskewed.png to SVG format. However, when you converted Image:Polytope model skewed.png to SVG, you permuted the colors wrongly, so that it no longer represents the same graph. I've reverted your last change to Polytope model accordingly. Once Image:Polytope model skewed.svg matches Image:Polytope model skewed.png, please un-revert. Fair use image tagging for SVG

Hi Stannered,

Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I've actually posted on that page earlier today although when I spoke to titan earlier I hadn't seen it yet. The whole system needs a serious shake up in my opinion. Theres a general consensus it seems of "its fine, we havent been caught out yet", but the fact remains its against the law to resize a logo which by SVG conversion we are doing. There are literally hundreds of images which say "It is believed that the use of low-resolution images on the English-language Wikipedia..." Then directly beneath it is the SVG tag promoting the image to be redrawn as at an effectively higher resolution, infinite print quality etc. This means the image can be used by us (and others) for profit gains which makes it illegal use of the image. Theres no two ways about it, its absolutely illegal. We need to address it as soon as possible before we get caught out, as far as I can see so far no one has actually SVG'ed a logo but its a ticking time bomb to just leave it on the logic that we've been okay so far and that its probably alright.

Equally, the definition of a logo seems to have become anomalous on wikipedia to just include corporate brand logos, not logos such as wi-fi enabled hotspot logos, product identity logos, video game, DVD and film rating logos etc. I think its something we need to be very careful with as the last thing we want to do is get accused of fair use violation of a logo. Its something many companys take extremely seriously, more so infact than say using a copyrighted photograph improperly. Wikipedia seems to have a collection of some of the best artists around and it isn't hard for many of us to redraw corporate logos with seemingly no differences, once these logos are on wikipedia anyone can download them and we become a provider of illegal copyrighted material.

The original discussion over at the page in question never seems to have come to a conclusion or addressed the original problem that we are tagging copyrighted logos for enlargement and clarification which is against the law if we actually go ahead with it. Oh forget to mention that while I see that you guys reached consensus I don't agree with it myself. Interiots view on it is primarily what I disagree with. I totally see the logic behind it but as far as I can see there its still illegal to convert a raster graphic into SVG. My reasoning is with how the image will come out printed primarily. Raster v's Vector doesn't nessessarily mean higher quality in the SVG version on screen, however, raster graphics will be limited in print quality as all PC screens show images at either 72 or on rare occasions 96 pixels per inch. On paper however this value can be as high as 2400. up to 600 ppi is a clearly visible quality increase just with the naked eye. SVG allows for infinite rescaling of images. A 300x300 pixel image at 300ppi for example will print at 1" by 1" on paper, any larger and it will start to lose quality (preventing someone making a 40" banner of it for example). However an SVG could be printed at any size with no loss of quality. So by placing a duplicate quality SVG version of a raster graphic on wikipedia we are providing people with an image which when printed will exceed the quality the original was drawn at, which breaks the law. That means people not authorised to use or posess the logo can aquire our duplicate SVG version and use it for personal gain. Therefore, we ourselfs are in breach of copyright law by providing the image to begin with. It seems very clear cut to me, I don't see why there is any need for consensus or debate on it as its a simple matter of the law, what we're doing is in breach of it.WikipedianProlific^(Talk) 20:30, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi again, yeah I totally agree on the matter of consensus. Hence why I'm seeking new consensus further down the page. I think the question with regards to companies who provide vectors of their logo is; are they providing it so people like us can resize it or is it for their own use or perhaps even their own mistake not realising the potential a vector logo has to be used unlawfully. If they are providing it for people like us then I believe we're fine to use it, but I'm yet to come across a logo like that. I have come across many however which are simply logos tagged by novice editors for SVG without really understanding either the legal situation or even the requirements of an SVG image. After all, not all logos are suitable for transfer to SVG, especially older, pre-computer ones. In any case, I look forward to your opinions and hopefully a new consensus can be reached which fits better with the law. WikipedianProlific^(Talk) 21:28, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

License for 1FactK8.svg

As it's an exact copy of another 2D image, the copyright remains the same as on the original image (I can't have any copyright claim on the image) so it has to be public-domain (as the original was). Stannered 15:01, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

Ok, you can technically license your contributions to the image under a license (such as commons:Template:PD-retouched-user). The main thing is that PD-ineligible isn't applicable so I just wanted to tell you that I'll remove that license. Need to fix bold "0"'s in Image:Laser printer-Writing.svg  Done

Heh, someone finally decided to tackle this ridiculously complex drawing I made in Microsoft Word, to remake it as an SVG.

Some small changes are needed in your SVG. A few zeroes in the RIP bitmap are bolded, and when Wikipedia renders the SVG at a smaller size, the bold zeroes mess up the layout so that the "W" is no longer clearly visible at the smaller size.

Also, there's an extra "electron" in bottom-center of the W on the drum.

Otherwise good job. :)

In case you're interested, it was not actually bold fonts causing the problem (I was puzzled as to what was at first), but the fact that I'd accidentally left a second copy of the text behind the first; the second copy was black, and I'd made the first transparent rather than grey. Cross-polytope SVGs?

Hi Stannered! At your convenience, could you help with some SVG images like Image:Cross_graph_5.svg for 6..9? I have my lo-res pngs like Image:Cross graph 9.png, happy if replaced! Also nice if the nodes could have red dots. Same issues at Simplex. I tried some tinkering on my own, like Image:Complete graph K9.svg, but not great results. Thanks! You mean the 1 - 5 cross polytopes? As I mentioned, the 6 - 9 polytopes already have versions with marked nodes. K10 and K11 are now done. I'm not doing it by hand; I'm node editing regular polytopes (as generated by Inkscape) to remove all but two points, keeping one point fixed, then rotating the whole thing to get the lines from other points. Means that each line has a duplicate, but as they are collinear, it's not noticeable. Someone can remove them if they want. Stannered 22:43, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

DYK Medal gradient

I had to do it in layers, because SVG won't let you do a gradient around an edge like that. So there are literally 6 different borders around the ribband - 1 for the outer color and one with the gradient for each of the edges. If you look at the corners, the gradients intersect and continue to the edges instead of rounding the corner. -- I. Pankonin (t/c) 09:12, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

Oxbridge user templates

When you asked about the right hand side box on the User school talk page in regards to Oxbridge, I took a look at the school. I have begun working on a merged Oxbridge user template that, when completed, will be easy to use. Would you be willing to help me with this, I have the beginnings of the template set up, I just have a few questions.

1. Do I have the correct abbreviations for each of the schools?
2. Regarding the schools' colors
   1. What should the background color of the left and right hand boxes be?
   2. What should the font color of the left and right hand boxes be?
   3. What should the background color of the center box be?
   4. What should the font color of the the center box box be?
3. Should it include a Camford box?
4. Should it include the fictional colleges of Oxbridge, Cambridge, and Oxford for fun?
5. Would you use this box and get others to use it?

If you look at the bottom of the page, you will see that the template will generate the categories for each of the collages. I will be working on the attends/attended/alumnus issue next.

I would like to know what you think about it, so please give the draft a peek.

A new Oxbridge user box

Non-free SVGs

Wikipedia's image-use policy requires that "Low- rather than high-resolution ... is used" (#3b). If an SVG of a non-free image is made, it can be made infintiely large thereby violating the our policy. Can you show me where this "consensus" took place? indopug (talk) 23:17, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

{{SVG}}, preferably with the subcategory included (as in {{SVG|flag}} in this case). I've added the template on Commons, as that is where the image is, so that the tag will be seen on all projects rather than just here. Thanks for asking! Stannered (talk) 23:46, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

Star polygon images

Hi Stannered,

I was wondering if you'd like to help with some SVG images. You helped with some like Image:Complete graph K11.svg. This is really what I want, except separating the full-graphs into star forms. Well, and also the vertex circles could be a little larger.

Basically I'm interested in a whole bunch of images like Image:Octagram.png with red vertices and black edges, for polygons {a/b}, with a=3,4,... and b=1..int(a/2), so including polygons (b=1) and star polygons (lcd(a,b)=1)and star figures (lcd(a,b)>1). (Up to a=20 if we were ambitious since up to 20-gons given now.) They could be called Image:Regular polygon a-b.png. It's very simple, and perhaps I could look at the SVGs and reproduce them. I did some by hand in PNG, lores, like Image:Triskaidecagrams.png. They could be grouped like this for less uploads (if separated by compound forms or not), but more flexible for adding to pages to be separate images. Anyway, if you could help I'd be grateful. Oh, possibly the "compound" (polygon figure) forms could have edges different colors for each connected subgraph?

debian release graph

hi, i just noticed that the image Debian_releases.svg and Releases.gif are outdated, there is a new version at the original site. these images get generated automatically, so perhaps it's better to reference them directly. there is also a releases.ps right next to the .gif, perhaps that is easier for you. if you want notifications of changes, or any other change to the original script, please holler. unfortunately i don't have a script to generate svg from ps yet...

Google Logo

Regarding the new Google Logo I uploaded a few weeks ago, it seems like one of Google's late-night experiments similar to the fade-away effect that got implemented recently. Google sometimes experiments with new features when most people aren't online, and come back with it a few months later if it works out. Thus, the new Google logo I uploaded was only there for a few hours on the home page. • make curves actual smooth curves (not a collection of squares tightly coiled into circles),
• slightly realign columns of arrows vertically.

Minus sign

The magnetic field (marked B, indicated by red field lines) around wire carrying an electric current (marked I).

In this picture, you used a hyphen instead of a minus sign. The minus sign should look just like the plus sign but without the vertical part. Thus:
