Wikipedia as a reliable source
[edit source]Hey, TJKreen! Re your user, which says I’ve grown resentful of teachers saying the phrase: “Wikipedia isn’t a reliable source”. I’ve come here to change this fact, one edit at a time. I will work tirelessly to make this a reality, no matter how long or how grueling the process proves to be.
FWIW, Wikipedia doesn't consider Wikipedia a reliable source.
A Wikipedia article, ideally, is a curated list of reliable sources (the references) about a subject, with an accurate summarization (the article) of what those sources say. Teachers should be telling students that WP is a good place to start, but they're quite correct that a Wikipedia article itself shouldn't be cited. The sources Wikipedia cites are what students should be using, not Wikipedia. Wikipedia articles can be edited by anyone, so even at our very best articles, errors can creep in over time. I looked at Clodfelter, Milyutin, and so on, and could not find a total for these losses. Where exactly did you get the figures? Since I could not find them, I had to change everything. Please be honest because people regularly get blocked for continued AI use, and any AI-generated content needs cleaning up. Can you explain, in your own words, what you were blocked for?
I was blocked for supposedly using LLM’s in my editing, something I have repeatedly denied due to it not being true. I refuse to confess to a crime that I did not commit. This, I believe, comes down to just how I write Wikipedia articles, something I’m very passionate about.
If unblocked, what edits would you make and what (if applicable) would you do differently?
I would double check my writing, ensuring that it doesn’t look/sound as “AI-like”.

This blatant AI-accusation has happened to me before, but in an academic setting, and nearly caused me to fail an assignment. I will not go into detail here as it could reveal private info.

- For context, the following played out on the Wikimedia Discord server: TJ complains in the English Wikipedia channel about being blocked unfairly, I ask him whether he might've used Grammarly, MS Copilot, or Google Translate . He responds yes to Grammarly and Google Translate, and acted shocked upon learning they are LLM-powered (providing no extra detail than what I had said, someone else adds Google Scholar uses AI which he also clung onto). None of those can output markdown (Special:Permalink/1348955428, scroll to the bottom) or fictional references, so it appears to be more dishonesty. They clearly used a chatbot. Actually Kowal, yes, Google translate can do both of those things. Also, when you said that I “acted shocked”, that heavily implies that I’m lying. This is not the case, and I’m willing to die on that hill. Not to mention that it breaks WP:AGF.
