Hi-Crucifer, Tennessee, Mikesville, Florida needs info boxes. Is there someone at GNIS that can assign a GNIS to Mikesville, Wisconsin since the community is on a Wisconsin Department of Transportation Winnebago County map and would qualified for one? Thank you as always-RFD (talk) 15:14, 30 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

I sent an email to the GNIS manager regarding Mikesville, Wisconsin; I'll tell you when I get a response from him. I've added infoboxes to the other two. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 05:26, 1 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Illinois photos

edit

I'm still sorting through photos of 130 sites from my Lexington trip three weeks ago (that's what produced Second Presbyterian Church; until I saw the nomination, I thought I'd photographed the wrong building), but when those are done, I'm looking to start adding more Illinois images. Last weekend I got through all counties that I'd not previously visited; I only got a few photos in some counties (in Fulton, for example, I got just a few archaeological sites around Dickson Mounds), but I've gotten at least one site in every county, and (aside from Stark, with just one place listed) I think I may have gotten two or more everywhere. Not sure how long it will take to get them all organised, let alone uploaded. I was able to get New Philadelphia; they had a sign giving directions to the publicly-accessible Free Frank McWorter Grave Site, although I couldn't get it (I didn't realise that it was publicly accessible, but I was badly behind schedule after getting stuck in a parade that morning and couldn't visit it), but at least I have good photos for one of the two previously-unillustrated NHLs. Now if someone can just find a good excuse to visit Principia College; they have a guard at the entrance and appeared rather hostile to visitors when I attempted to visit on Memorial Day. Nyttend (talk) 04:34, 11 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Great! I'm looking forward to seeing all those photos, especially in a few of the counties that had no (or very few) pictures. Good luck getting that last NHL; Principia College claims to be open to visitors and tours, so maybe they just look hostile. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 04:56, 11 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
I don't believe it: they have a manned guardpost at the gate who demanded my reason for appearing, and when I said that I was hoping to get a few pictures and that I wasn't planning on using them commercially, I was given the vice-president's business card and informed that I must email her to set up an appointment for non-professional photography. Maybe one of our metro St Louis editors will just have to go to a sporting event...Nyttend (talk) 04:59, 11 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Well, that's unfortunate. Not sure why a college needs to be that protective of its campus, but it is what it is, I suppose. I found someone on Flickr who has a few freely licensed photos of the campus, so that should fill the gap for now. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 05:25, 11 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

I checked the coordinates, and one of the Pine Groves in Ouachita Parish is well within the corporate limits of West Monroe, so it isn't actually an unincorporated community. Nomination help

edit

During your searches for Illinois nominations, would you happen to have seen anything for the Carithers Store Building in Fulton County? IHPA gives nothing at all for it, as far as I can see: no marker on the map, it doesn't appear when you get all Fulton County NR locations, and it doesn't appear when you get all Table Grove locations regardless of their status. Accordingly, I couldn't get the location before visiting (I ended up photographing every single lot on the western side of the village square, just to be sure), so the nomination would be really helpful, and if you know where to get it, things would be simpler than if I had to email NRIS. Nyttend (talk) 19:06, 13 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Unfortunately, there are a handful of sites that just don't seem to be in the IHPA database, even though they're on the NR. I've run into the same issue with the Benson Water Tower and the Madison County Sheriff's House and Jail, and I ended up having to email NRIS for both nominations. I'm guessing that the Carithers Store Building is in the same situation. (It might be that it just isn't listed publicly like address-restricted sites, but I'm not sure why that would be the case.) TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 02:05, 14 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
The Madison County Sheriff's House and Jail has been destroyed. In Mound City, the old Civil War hospital is gone from HARGIS, and the actual building has been destroyed. In Table Grove, the Carithers Store is clearly gone (they have state forms for all the historic buildings, and they're definitely not it), and it's missing from HARGIS. I suspect that they sometimes remove demolished buildings from HARGIS without the locations being delisted. Do you know if you could request the nomination, and then let me know its precise coords, where exactly on the square it is? By the way, I note your work for the Buckhorn Presbyterian Church; I'm looking to get a photo in a couple of weeks. Nyttend (talk) 04:18, 14 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
I requested the nomination; I'll tell you when I get it, which could be anywhere from within a day to multiple weeks given how NPS is about these things. I think your theory might be correct, though; I can't say for sure, but based on aerial imagery it doesn't look like the water tower's still around either. Of course, I've found a number of demolished buildings that were still in HARGIS, but they're usually recent demolitions. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 07:00, 14 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! Agreeing again with you; the Harrison Street Bridge at Charleston is still on the map, and we have a citation on its county list for a 2011 destruction. Nyttend (talk) 12:29, 14 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the update; I guessed in favor of that site immediately upon arriving, but there were several new buildings on the western side of the square, so I couldn't be at all confident in that guess. Today's the first that I've been able to start tackling the pictures from my trip; I just uploaded the last of the photos from a Lexington KY trip of 21 June, and I've been spending a bunch of time preparing for next week's trip to Buckhorn and other parts of southern Kentucky. The next batch of Illinois photos will likely be my last, at least for a long while; I'm preparing to be moving to Pennsylvania in August. Nyttend (talk) 01:34, 18 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
No problem. Good luck in Pennsylvania! TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 03:50, 18 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Noted. I'm still trying to find it — not that it's lost, but I haven't yet sorted things by county. That's the next step; I should find it soon. Nyttend (talk) 12:05, 20 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Okay, all photos sorted, and I found the image in question. Might not have it online until this afternoon EDT, as I'll be leaving soon for church. Nyttend (talk) 13:50, 20 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Oops with those "L"s when I meant to type colons... You're quite welcome. I got the NR-listed church a couple of blocks away, along with a few archaeological sites and a schoolhouse elsewhere in Fulton County. Meanwhile, would you like the full nomination for Appleyard? It's at secure.in.gov/apps/dnr/shaard/r/202a0/N/site.pdf. Indiana, like Illinois, simply doesn't mention its AR sites, and you have to look for them by brute-forcing the URLs. The "site.pdf" doesn't matter (change that around to anything, such as site.jpg, gibberish.doc, etc., and you'll still get the file), and the only critical component of the URL is the hexadecimal section between "r" and "N", here the 202a0. This improvement may not help our stats for long, however — the house is far from its original location mentioned in the nomination and in the Putnam County Interim Report survey documentation (I only found it by emailing Wesley Wilson, head archivist at DePauw University in Greencastle), and one of the recent pending listing pages notes that it's up for delisting. Nyttend (talk) 00:38, 21 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the full nomination link. I had been wondering if Indiana did something similar to Illinois since you seemed to have access to all of its restricted nominations; until now, I had just figured that you had some kind of special access at IU, but apparently they're just all online. I'll keep that in mind in case I decide to go through Indiana once I finish Illinois. I actually decided to work on Appleyard because it was on the pending listings for removal. I came across it a few months ago and noticed it was in much worse condition than the standard NRIS-only article, but I didn't improve it then because it was address-restricted. When I saw it was up for removal, though, I figured I'd better do something before it fell off the stats page and into oblivion (until someone cleared out the category, at least). That article was one of the worst NRIS-only articles I've seen; it had another source written out as prose but not really cited, and it had a bunch of NRIS data output converted (poorly) to prose. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 02:30, 21 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome. No special access; I just went through approximately 196,000 URLs to figure out what items were relevant to us, and of course most weren't — there are lots of state site forms (e.g. 2801b and 2801c, for Pyramid Mound) and tons of random photos for the Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Inventory (e.g. 1cd6c, a random surveyed house in Iroquois Township, Newton County), but almost all nominations are on there. I never was able to find four AR nominations: all I have for the Ennis Archaeological Site is a form that NPS emailed me; in addition to the NPS-emailed nominations for the two Jackson County sites (see list), I found state site forms; and there's nothing at all for the John D. Haynes House. My advantage from being at IU is increased access to normally published resources: early-20th-century published surveys and late-century dissertations for sites such as Ellerbusch and Yankeetown, the complete Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Inventory, which I've used for non-archaeological sites such as Appleyard and the Old Clarksville Site, academic journals for sites such as Swan's Landing as well as lots of Missouri sites, and scholarly books such as the ones I used for the Duffy Site in Illinois and Murphy Mound in Missouri. Nyttend (talk) 02:54, 21 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Wow, that's quite a lot of URLs. I'm not sure if you were using a script (like I tried on some of the Illinois sites) or just a lot of brute force to sort through all of those, but either way that's impressive. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 03:51, 21 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Brute force. I used Excel to generate all the ID numbers (it was 196,608 total: digits 2-5 had 16 options each, and digit 1 was either nonexistent, "1", or "2", so 16×16×16×16×3), then a find/replace thing in Notepad to put on the remaining elements of the URLs (including * to make it MediaWiki compatible), viewed chunks of the list in a sandbox preview, and opened each URL as a new tab in my browser. It would have been far far harder if they hadn't invented tabbed browsing! This was simply the only way I was able to get several nominations, such as Kappa V and Glendale Ridge: they're small enough that they don't get published anywhere except in the NR nominations and in reports that are produced specifically for landowners such as the Corps of Engineers, and of course those don't get made publicly available. I know Cheryl Ann Munson of IU Anthropology, who's worked a lot on these sites, and at one time I asked if artifacts from Kappa V or the related Epsilon II were publicly exhibited at the Black Lab (thinking to photograph the artifacts, comparable to this image, and use that as the site's photo at the county list), but she responded that they were minor enough that any artifacts would be stored in the normal lithic storage areas of the Black Lab along with similar artifacts from other minor sites. Potts Corners, Wisconsin

edit

Hi-GNIS has Potts Corners, Wisconsin listed as a locale-GNIS 1571849. However the Wisconsin Department of Transportation has Potts Corners on the Vernon County map on County HWY P in the town of Stark. Is Potts Corners another unincorporated community that GNIS missed or mislabeled or is it a locale? Thank you again-RFD (talk) 23:00, 15 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

I checked the coordinates, and I don't even see any buildings in the Potts Corners area, so I definitely wouldn't call it a populated place as it is. It looks like the GNIS is right about this one; it might be a historical community that WisDOT left on its maps, but I'd like to see another source confirming that. Kandiyohi County, Minnesota

edit

Hi-Priam, Minnesota needs an infobox. I was going to do an article about Roseland, Minnesota also in Kandiyohi County; the GNIS listed 2 different communities named Roseland and it appears they are within 1 miles of each other. Which one? Thanks-RFD (talk) 14:10, 19 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

The DOT map of Kandiyohi County implies that 650287 is the actual population center of Roseland, so I'd use that one. I'm pretty sure those count as duplicate entries, though; the edges of the built-up parts of the two areas are only 0.2 miles apart. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 23:19, 19 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the note. The location is unquestionably right; the address on this house is 406 (you can partly see the numbers immediately right of the front door), and near the start of Section 8 of the nomination, it's called "little building on the southeast corner of Franklin and Union streets", which is where this house is. I'll revise the description to say that this is the site. I'd simply assumed that they'd weatherboarded and substantially expanded the original building. Nyttend (talk) 12:24, 22 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Soon after leaving this message, I adjusted the description to say "site", although of course it's possible that it's the same building; look at the Wabash County Courthouse, built in 1881 in the Second Empire style and never destroyed only remodelled. Nyttend (talk) 19:43, 22 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hopefully I'll be able to do a bunch of work on the Illinois uploads soon. At a weeklong church event at the moment in central Kentucky, so I've spent the past three days getting photos (once this trip's all uploaded, we'll have at least one photo for every county in the state except for Elliott) and may take a bit of time to get those organised before I forget what's what. Nyttend (talk) 00:40, 27 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
I ended up starting the Illinois uploads before working on the Kentucky stuff, partly because you're working on Illinois sites and would appreciate photos, while nobody's doing anything on Kentucky. I'm now done with the NR photo uploads from this trip; they will be my last for the foreseeable future, given my greatly increased distance from the state. Nyttend (talk) 04:35, 4 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Glendale Ridge is 1f45d. Note that this is not the NRIS name; they think it's "Glendale River", which is most definitely not the reading in the nomination form. For Riverton, you may benefit from [http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/468929 An Archaeological Survey of the Wabash Valley in Illinois], although if you're closer to UC Santa Cruz, an alternate edition might be easier to get. You may also want to consult Archaeology of the Lower Ohio River Valley; I'm seeing lots of California results for it in Worldcat. Please note that it's been months and months since I had these books, so I can't remember for sure whether they're relevant. Finally, and undoubtedly the most important, is Howard Winters' The Riverton Culture: A Second Millenium [sic] Occupation in the Central Wabash Valley. PS, if you can get it, Excavations at the Stoner and Lowe Sites may well be useful (although it concentrates primarily on the later Allison-Lamotte), since it obviously pays heavy attention to Stoner; I don't remember anything about the Lowe Site whatsoever. PPS, this JSTOR article should be helpful, as it provides a perspective decades newer than Winters. JSTOR tells me that it's free to read, even though I'm not logged in with my university account; if you can't get it, let me know and I'll help. Nyttend (talk) 05:19, 4 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
A Google search for "Wint" produced results for this book, which of course I should have remembered; it's been a while since I had it out of the library. This PDF is the Indiana Academy of Sciences piece mentioned in the Glendale Ridge nomination, and see SHAARD 22204 for a relevant site form; it's rather minimal (as is typical for these forms), but it still can be useful; see how I've used a site form at Pyramid Mound, for example. PS, see 2839a and 2838e for Glendale Ridge site forms. Nyttend (talk) 12:24, 4 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Just happened onto two of your stubs for Nebraska NRHP sites (Site No. RH00-062 and Site No. JF00-072). Hi-I let two editors know about the census-designated place list-Kansas & Mississippi so the list can be reduced once the articles are started. The 2 editors have started articles about the unincorporated communities in Kansas & Mississippi. I want to let you know in case you get questions or comments. @Coal town guy: The list of census-designated places without articles in Kentucky is at User:TheCatalyst31/CDPs/KY. It looks like there are thirteen CDPs that still don't have articles, so if you wanted to start those it'd be much appreciated. I can give you some resources for census data if you want. There are two main resources I use to get census information. This page links to data files with the area and basic population data for every area included in the 2010 census; here's the data file for populated places in Kentucky. American Factfinder can give you more detailed demographic information about each place if you search for a place and go to the "General Population and Housing Characteristics" table. Use the "Bookmark" option to directly cite those tables. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 20:30, 8 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Info box question

edit

Hey, we have a few hundred edits out there with the state name being placed in the info box along with the town name. I asked the editor ewhy and I did indeed take a peek at WP: MOS.........the answer was a it could not hurt, which is true...However, Almo, Kentucky, is an example. That would mean, we would have the state name in the title, the lead, the details, the article , the template and now, the info box 3 times minimum, including the state map???? Just curiousCoal town guy (talk) 13:15, 7 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

The question of where to include the state name next to a community name and where not to has caused far more debate than it should. Over the past few years there have been several long discussions at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (geographic names) about whether the state name always belongs in the page title for communities. I'm personally of the opinion that the state name should be in the page title, partly because it's standard usage and partly because changing the convention would lead to disambiguation hell. I think it matters a lot less for the infobox (or the name in the first sentence); it's still arguably standard usage, but it's clear by that point what state the place is in so the added context isn't as necessary. For that reason, and because I don't want to start silly edit wars, I don't care much either way if the state name is in the infobox or not. In practice, I think I usually include the state name in the infobox just so it matches the title, but I make an exception if the place name is already really long or if other places in the area use the other convention. (I never include it in the first sentence though, because saying "Almo, Kentucky is an unincorporated community in Kentucky" just sounds silly.) McDowell County Gary Neighbors

edit

I did indeed find a ref which explained what happened to the towns. They are by specific definition a neighborhood as they became part of Gary in 71, as a requirement of Gary being incorporated. I misunderstood the idea od neighborhood, but Nyttend was patient enough to lay it out in a cogent manner...IF you are interested, I have the ref in the Thorpe, West Virginia article which I will finish editing tomorrow. They will not be listed in the county template, HOWEVER, I can link them from the Gary article and the ref is rock solid.Coal town guy (talk) 02:04, 12 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Great! Now that you have a reference, we can link them from the Gary article again, since they're a pretty important part of Gary's history. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 05:59, 12 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

I Invented The Breakfast Burrito

edit

Hi Catalyst. In 1997 I created the breakfast burrito. I was with a number of friends following a rather heavy night out & decided to cook a full english breakfast (eggs, sausages, bacon, beans & mushrooms). Upon realising that we has no bread to toast & accompany the breakfast, I found some flour tortillas in the fridge & decided to try something different. I wrapped the mentioned items into each flour tortilla & amongst my friends, it was an absolute revelation. The idea grew from there & has been widely copied across the UK over the years & now, clearly, the globe. I'd appreciate if you wouldn't mind re-adding this fact to Wikipedia, & I will be more than happy to have this fact varified from various sources. NRHP photo

edit

Hi, would you please consider undoing this edit? Despite the file name, the building in that photo is not the Ebenezer Gould House, but is located at 603 N. Ball St. in Owosso (compare with the satellite view and the listings here). I was just in Shiawassee County taking a bunch of photos, and that house is actually within sight of the Leigh Christian House. I've requested renaming of the file on Commons, and I moved the photo to the George Pardee House listing, but I wanted to bring this up with you instead of simply removing it again. United States Post Office template

edit

Hi-I had been using a template GR|7 as a reference in unincorporated communities articles whose communities have a post office. However, this template apparently was deleted. Is there another template I can use? Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks-RFD (talk) 15:54, 19 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

I don't think there's a replacement template; all of the instances of the template were substituted when the template was deleted. Your best bet would be to copy the reference from one of the articles it's already in, or just put it in manually every time. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 18:28, 19 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the note; I've moved the article back. Unfortunately, I didn't see the gym, so because you've read the nomination, you're more familiar with it than I am. Looking for it on Google Street View, I was never able to find the gym, so I assumed that it had been destroyed, until a couple of days ago when I noticed it :-( I definitely would have gotten a photo of the gym if I'd known that it was there. I think I said that I'm preparing to move to PA; that's Thursday, so I've been spending lots of time packing, and my work with these photos is mostly writing up the image description pages so I can upload all 110 of them in a big batch. Back to Pennsylvania Avenue

edit

Three months ago, I told you that I couldn't think of another HD that was comparable to the Pennsylvania Avenue Historic District in East St Louis, but now I can say that I've found another one that's simply fallen apart — the Arlington Avenue Historic District in Youngstown OH. Youngstown's definitely a Rust Belt city, but it's nowhere near as bad as East St Louis or Gary; maybe this is because it's the county seat and there's nothing bigger around it (you leave Youngstown, and before long you're in the woods and farms), so they have to maintain the downtown for governmental and educational purposes, and there's nowhere for the locals to go if they can't afford to build in the surrounding communities, unless they move to a different region entirely. Arlington Avenue felt somewhat like Pennsylvania Avenue in that the whole built environment is gone except for this one house, but it wasn't as bad because the surrounding blocks are still neighborhoods, and because the northern side of the street has been replaced with an active parking lot, not overgrown weeds. Nyttend (talk) 16:04, 6 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Wow, that one looks like it might be even worse than Pennsylvania Avenue. At least there the one surviving house was being actively maintained as a museum, while the house in your photo looks like it's in need of some roof work. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 20:12, 6 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
It does, but it could be worse; a quick check of Google Satellite reveals that I remembered wrongly, as there are a few other houses in the block. Nyttend (talk) 01:16, 7 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Thanks for editing my draft. I work in publishing at an imprint Penguin Random House, and Gabriele Oettingen is one of our authors. I'm uncertain why the references do not sufficiently demonstrate her notability. For one thing, there are quite a few published works that are cited as references. For another, Gabriele already has a page on the German Wikipedia, and that page uses the same sources. How should I go about improving this submission?

Marshall Site, Marshall County

edit

Just wanted to let you know that I may be able to get good information on this site before long. It's discussed for a little bit in the latest newsletter of the Eastern States Rock Art Research Association, which also mentions some likely-to-come nominations for several petroglyph sites in the southern part of the state. According to http://ilarchsurv.org/Resources/Documents/ias_journal_index.pdf, Illinois Archaeology published an article on the site last year, and while my current library doesn't get the journal (we're tiny, compared to any state school library, and we're in Pennsylvania), I've requested that they interlibrary loan it from Bloomington, so I should be able to get reasonable documentation on it before long. Nyttend (talk) 03:59, 19 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Glad to hear about that! I had found nominations for the other recent Illinois nominations, but I wasn't sure how I was going to find anything on that one until/unless the NPS posted something. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 04:41, 19 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
It was a little hard to find anything on it, especially because more results were for the Marshall Site in Kentucky, which appears to be rather more significant than an isolated petroglyph. Nyttend (talk) 11:39, 19 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Question re. photos on NPS site

edit

Hello, I'd like to use a photo for the Morrison Baptist Church taken in 1983. I know the copyright has not expired on it. However, what is the mechanism, if any other than trying to contact the author, of using photos found using the "Infobox Creator" and is on a NPS/NRHP site? (The site misspelled the name--it should be "morrison", not "morison". In other words, can any of these photos actually be used or just the url pointed to?Steven C. Grange Hall

edit

Hi-Grange Hall, Jackson County, Illinois, Grange Hall, Lake County, Illinois, Grange Hall, Ohio-thanks-RFD (talk) 11:55, 11 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

I did the other two, but I'm not sure if the Grange Hall in Lake County still exists. The coordinates put it at the edge of Gurnee, and the one bit of history I found about it seems to imply that it's part of Gurnee now. (It looks a lot more like a suburban intersection than a community now, too.) It certainly might have been a community, or at least what people called the area around the Grange Hall, but it doesn't seem to be now. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 02:53, 12 November 2014 (UTC)Reply
Scrolling down this page to respond about Dougtone, I passed this section and was curious where Grange Hall was in Jackson County. I've redirected it to the pre-existing article. Having been there, I know that it's just the grange hall and farm fields, and USGS maps don't even label anything there; GNIS simply misclassified the grange hall as a populated place. Nyttend (talk) 12:50, 19 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
And now I feel silly for not catching that, since I helped write the pre-existing article. Thanks for redirecting that. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 23:50, 19 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
You're welcome. Part of it is that I've been there (and I'm guessing you've not), and I remember my photos well, so this building came to mind immediately. Plus, I've visited more of and I'm naturally more interested in the south (most Illinois residents I know are in Randolph County, and I have a southerner's view of Chicago), so something in Jackson County is more interesting than an identically-named place in Lake County. Hello TheCatalyst31. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

I hope this message finds you well and thanks again you for your efforts in this area. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:20, 18 November 2014 (UTC).Reply

Silver City

What can I say? Can't very easily argue with the nomination form or a convincing argument. NRIS indeed calls it "Silver City Historic District North Addition" (refnum 83001620), and the <other names> section reads See Also: Silver City Historic District. It definitely looks like a boundary increase, so I think NRIS has mislabelled/misclassified it: as you say, another NRIS error. Thank you for investigating the situation! Hate these transcription-from-form errors — one such error, putting the Jackson Koehler Eagle Brewery at address 2131 instead of 2136, means that I'll have to make a 70-mile detour just to get Erie County PA fully illustrated in my own photo collection. Cumorah

Hi-I just added a GNIS to the article Cumorah and the article needs an info box. The Latter Days Saint Church founder Joseph Smith supposedly discovered the Book of Mormon on the Hill Cumorah. It is an interesting article to read. Many thanks-RFD (talk) 22:13, 12 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

It's an interesting article, but I'm not convinced it needs an infobox. The site's more notable for its religious significance than as a geographic feature, so a geographic infobox wouldn't really be appropriate, and I'm not really familiar with the standards for infoboxes in religious articles. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 23:56, 12 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
I agree it is an interesting article. The Hill Cumorah has a GNIS and Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon is mentioned in the GNIS. Interesting.RFD (talk) 00:06, 13 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
Mormonism is an interesting case because it's one of the few major religions founded in the United States, so its spiritual history is pretty entangled with American history. Naples Mound 8 in Illinois is a similar situation; it's a significant archaeological site in its own right, but it's also a Mormon holy site. Thanks for the URL. The problem is that many (most?) of them don't have clearly identifiable locations, and it's thus often impossible to be more specific than the county (if that's possible), so I can't tell which municipality to put them in. Spots in boroughs are easier, but many of his in-town photos are tilted, or they show little but trees and pavement; if these two were in Pennsylvania municipalities that are currently unillustrated, I don't think I'd upload either of them. Nyttend (talk) 12:47, 19 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

It would be so much easier if he geotagged all of them. Hard to do if you don't take specific notes (I have to be careful when photographing, for that reason), so it's a pity that he doesn't have one of those cameras that includes coordinates in the metadata. How familiar are you with the courthouses within several counties around Martinsville, IL? I have a specifi question you may be able to answer. Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 06:21, 6 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

My inlaws live near Martinsville, IL. Now, this is my memory from several years ago, so some details may be/must be wrong. Anyhow, we were traveling around and we went around a courthouse square, somewhere near Martinsville, probably west or northwest of there. I don't know if the courthouse is on the NRHP. In the northwest quadrant of the square was an obelisk with each of the four sides dedicated to a war. One of them gave some years and I asked my father-in-law "what war was that?" He said the Mexican-American War. This was about 6 or so years ago, and every other trip back up there I've tried to find it again. I think we've covered all of the counties that it could have been and never found it. So I think my memory must be faulty, and I'm confusing two courthouses or two trips or something. On subsequent trips I think we've covered all of the courthouses in the area, without finding the obelisk. It isn't very important, but it has been bugging me for years. So don't spend a lot of time on it. Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 03:12, 7 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

It looks like East Danville and Winkle are actually the same place. ODOT only uses East Danville, so that seems to be the modern name; if you don't object, I'm going to merge the new East Danville article into the Winkle article and move that one to East Danville. Draft:Weil-Brezin Map

edit

Although the Weil-Brezin map and the Zak transform are essentially equivalent, they have some important difference and it is worth to create a separate topic. It is very common two things in Mathematics are essentially equivalent, but are often used by people in different sub fields with emphasize on different point of view, and therefore two wiki entries are created with referring to each other. As you can see the definition of the Weil-Brezin Map and the Zak transform are significantly different, the Weil-Brezin Map transforms a function into a function with three variables, whereas the Zak transform takes a function into a function with two variables. The Weil-Brezin Map is defined via Heisenberg group geometrically, whereas there is no direct geometric or group theoretic interpretation from the Zak transform. I'm not really sure what to do about River Ranch. It looks to me like it's actually a resort rather than a traditional community, but I'm not sure if the resort is notable, since most of the information I can find on it comes from press releases. If there's an actual community there, I'm not sure if it's served by the post office either, since the post office is part of the resort according to this press release. Thanks for finding photos; we're probably never going to get all of them, but every one helps. And thanks for removing them from my list, because it will save me effort when next I go looking through the entire list for places that have been newly illustrated. Just one request: when you remove one or more locations, would you mind updating the county map that goes with it? The red areas on the map in each section are that county's unillustrated municipalities, and if you could download the map, un-mark the newly illustrated places, and reupload, it would be helpful on a small scale. Nyttend (talk) 13:22, 5 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Assuming you're not using anything more complex than MS Paint to update the maps, I should be able to do that. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 17:23, 5 April 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! Paint is all I have; what you did with Butler County is all that I was asking for. Nyttend (talk) 18:37, 5 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hey, quick question...I was able to find the original company store and PO at Springton WV, in Mercer County......HOWEVER, when I google map it, I thought I see its in Lashmeet?? It has a GNIS entry, should I go ahead and make an article with pic of course??Coal town guy (talk) 13:56, 18 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

I say go for it! You've got photographic evidence that it's a real place, and from what I can tell it's a few communities over from Lashmeet anyway. The Census Bureau might have just made the boundaries of the Lashmeet CDP really big, but that shouldn't affect the status of Springton. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 00:45, 19 May 2015 (UTC)Reply

The slower you drive, the more you can see......I am in a quandry about content at this toime and have asked Nyytend about one building in particular...Its pre WW2, deco, BUT it uses a symbology in its design some will misinterpret, while I do have pics, I thought a video would convey my concern. I would of course use pics in the article...Take a look if you want hmmm gotta think about thisCoal town guy (talk) 13:51, 20 May 2015 (UTC)Reply
Ah, I figured that would be the symbol in question. The swastika was a fairly common symbol in the US before it was associated with the Nazis, and we actually have a pretty long article about it. (The strangest one in hindsight has to be those Arizona highway markers - those look far worse out of context than that building.) I'd say that it's fine to include a picture of that building, since it predates WWII and has nothing to do with the Nazis, though if you know when it was built it might help to mention that so there's less confusion about the intent. You're welcome. Maybe you remember me saying a good while ago that I've had a list of county courthouses in Illinois in draft mode on my hard drive for a long while. Whether in Illinois or elsewhere, I've made a habit of photographing courthouses when I go past them, both because I don't want to have unnecessary holes in lists of this type, and because they're generally good subjects for photos. See how they're good at User:Nyttend/KY Courthouse Project (created by long-gone User:W.Marsh, but moved because it ought not be abandoned), and how badly Carlisle, Crittenden, Henderson, Livingston, and Spencer counties stand out from the others because we don't have images. I visited the county seats in Henderson and Spencer just last year, and the other three in 2013, so I should have been able to fill them and didn't. Nyttend (talk) 01:44, 3 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

Help expanding First Ladies: Influence & Image article?

edit

Hello TheCatalyst31. I saw you are a member of WikiProject Women's History and I was wondering if you could help me out with an article on C-SPAN's First Ladies: Influence & Image series I'm hoping to have expanded. I posted a request on the article's Talk page because, as C-SPAN's Digital & Social Media Specialist, I understand I have a conflict of interest and will not edit articles related to C-SPAN myself. If you have a chance, would you be willing to review the suggestions I uploaded to my user space and, if you see fit, make the changes? Or do you know of any other editors who might be interested in helping?

Thanks!

Adams County sites

edit

I'll be able to supply images for some of your newly improved articles; I've been visiting Quincy over the past few days (leaving tomorrow) and have gotten images for all three of the unillustrated sites. Nyttend (talk) 13:15, 29 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

That's great, thanks! I had just been wondering if you had a picture of the Exchange Bank, since you had one of Ursa Town Hall and the existing image was of the wrong building. If you're visiting anywhere else in Illinois, let me know and I can work on those places next (assuming I haven't already). TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 00:56, 30 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
Last year, when I visited Adams County quickly, I just got a few east-side Quincy sites before heading north on Illinois Route 96, which goes through Ursa: I didn't get anything in other towns. I don't know what I'll get today as I head back eastward, since I'll just be following US 24, and areas like Livingston County, Illinois have already been illustrated. The only nearby one without a photo is the Marshall Site, and you'll remember from the source that it would take a bit of work (and time) to find; no time for that today. Nyttend (talk) 12:56, 30 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
Finally going through my photos today. I forgot to mention that I got sites in Hancock County on Monday evening; it will be fully illustrated when I'm done uploading. I ended up going eastward through Monticello on Thursday and got all of the remaining sites for Woodford County. I don't believe that there are any other Illinois sites that I got; I spent most of my photo time in Iowa and Missouri, and most of my Illinois photos were in places like Quincy and Pontiac that had already been completed by others. Nyttend (talk) 21:22, 3 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Awesome. Hancock County will probably be next after I finish the last few sites in Adams County, and Woodford (and Warren and Knox, which I think you got a while ago) won't be too long after. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 22:12, 3 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Do you happen to have the Benson Water Tower nomination still? I got both the current water tower and the site of the old one (now occupied by a house, 40°51′3.5″N 89°7′13.5″W / 40.850972°N 89.120417°W / 40.850972; -89.120417), but the article's short enough that the text gets dwarfed by the imagery. Would you have a chance at expanding the article a bit? I'll be uploading the site-of-tower picture later; right now I'm just uploading non-historic images so I can delete them from my hard drive. Nyttend (talk) 02:47, 5 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
I still have the nomination, and I should be able to at least get it to start-class once I have the chance. I'm pretty busy this week, but hopefully over the weekend or next week I'll be able to work on it. (If you want to see what the old water tower looked like, I can send you the nomination too.) TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 03:28, 5 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! No need for a copy of the photo. But do you know of any similar water towers that have free images? Does the nomination refer to other water towers? For example, any references to the Havana Water Tower to the southwest or the Remington Water Tower and Town Hall to the northeast? I've used such references as a basis for uploading nomination images under fair use for image comparisons/contrasts, e.g. St. Patrick's Catholic Church (St. Patrick, Ohio) or Holy Rosary Catholic Church (St. Marys, Ohio). Granted, the latter I'll be deleting after you look through the article, since its purpose unexpectedly got served by the 1910 postcard, but I don't suppose someone made a postcard of a small-town water tower. Nyttend (talk) 11:39, 5 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
The only comparison made in the nomination for is to a water tower that was demolished as of when the nomination was written. It's similar to the Havana tower, but any comparison would be original research. (Though I'd think that a picture of a demolished historic structure qualifies under fair use anyway, as there's no other way to accurately depict the subject of the article.) TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 00:57, 6 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
I agree; I've done this at Hoodin Building and Port Jefferson School. Meanwhile, Adams County is mostly done, with the only redlinks being two large historic districts and Woodland Cemetery. When you're next writing an article, would you mind doing the cemetery? Smallbones' photo is a good demonstration of its former appearance, and I'll be able to supply imagery for its radically different appearance following the severe storms of 13 July (see coverage from the Herald-Whig; on 28 July, the mayor noted that they were still spending something like $80,000 daily for cleanup, two weeks after the storm) if the article's long enough to admit more than one image. Nyttend (talk) 01:27, 7 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
I was planning to do the cemetery next, and I can write a longer article so we can fit your photos in there. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 12:32, 7 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Woodland Cemetery has an article now (and it's plenty long IMO), so feel free to add your images. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 18:25, 8 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
And now Benson Water Tower is expanded too. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 01:50, 9 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I'll add photos once I finish getting them organised. Once this trip's images are all ready, that will be it for Illinois: I was interviewing for a job in Quincy last week and just learned Friday that I didn't get it. Nyttend (talk) 03:59, 9 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Sorry to hear about that; good luck in the job search. Did you happen to get a picture of the El Paso Public Library while you were in Woodford County? I just started an article on it, and it would be nice to have a modern color photo of the building. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 15:24, 9 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
Didn't go through El Paso. I did get a single photo of it two years ago, however, when I got three of the five photos currently on the list. It's not the best quality, so I didn't bother uploading it, but since you'd like to have something newer than the current image, I'll get it up. Nyttend (talk) 22:06, 9 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
