Hello, Anome,

I was going to de-PROD this article because there is no deletion rationale/reason offered in the PROD tag. Then I saw that you PROD'd it so I thought I'd ask you to return to this article and state a reason why you think it should be deleted. Thank you and I hope 2023 is starting off well for you! Vinod Adani

I didn't check that you're an Administrator on Wikipedia, Sorry. But there's some mistakes on the article too, like using "Elder brother" you used "Older". What is his Company or Brand name? --- Misterrrrr (talk) 10:30, 26 January 2023 (UTC)

"Elder" and "older" are both correct. I don't know what you mean by his "brand"; he has a name, Vinod Adani, and manages multiple companies, each with their own name. By the way, my being an admin does not give me any extra weight in the discussion; I'm just a regular editor in this context. — The Anome (talk) 10:36, 26 January 2023 (UTC)

Fish

Your query made me curious and I've been looking into it as well; it doesn't make sense to me. Even when the article set is only one element long, to avoid possible inefficiencies caused by the engine not properly optimizing the query order, it takes an extended period of time.

Part of this would be due to the difficulties matching titles, but it doesn't explain why queries like this one, where I also match articles and talk pages, produce results much faster than the Fish query, even though there are more pages to match and it is just a small part of a much larger query.

If you figure it out, let me know? BilledMammal (talk) 10:52, 27 February 2023 (UTC)

@BilledMammal: Yes, I have the answer now; Taavi gives it at the end of the thread; the SELECT had two columns with the same name, even though they were actually distinct within the query. Renaming one of them with AS sorted the conflict. Why this resulted in a hang, rather than an error, or even better yet, the expected correct behavior, is surely a bug, not a feature. Proposed deletion of Security-evaluated operating system

Editing Ethyl lauroyl arginate reverted

Dear The Anome,

Can you please unde the revert?

Thank you

MCF19 (talk) 10:03, 11 April 2023 (UTC)

@MCF19: Hi! Thanks for the contribution, but that's not how Wikipedia works. No one editor "owns" an article, and so the original author of the article has no special authority to grant permission to change it.

All contributions to Wikipedia have to follow a set of guidelines, one of which is that Wikipedia is a encyclopedia, and not a collector of original primary research. Your contribution relies too much on material from primary sources, and in particular relies far too heavily on information from a single source, Huntingdon Life Sciences. Please take a look at other articles, and see how they are structured, and what sources they use.

You can also find useful guidance at Wikipedia:Simplified ruleset and Wikipedia:Reliable sources. — The Anome (talk) 10:20, 11 April 2023 (UTC)

Thank you very much for your answer and help. I have reviewed the Simplified ruleset and reliable sources, but I don't understand your indication "material from primary sources", my article is an explanation of this molecule and the articles that reinforce this knowledge are the ones that I have mentioned or referred to...as a chemist I can't understand how to explain this molecule and its characteristics without this sources.
And also it is very important to point out that the actual information on this page is wrong, the CAS number is not correct for instance, and there are a lot of other incongruencies.
Would you be so kind to explain me a little bit more how to be able to have my article published? MCF19 (talk) 10:33, 11 April 2023 (UTC)
In general, secondary sources - and in particular review articles - are preferred to primary sources, although the use of primary sources is not forbidden, the use of a wide range of sources is highly preferred to relying on a single source. Where individual primary sources are used, you should follow the WP:NPOV guidelines. The important thing to remember here is that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a research journal; we summarise and report, we are not a publisher of primary research.

Wikipedia works by a process of incremental evolution, so dumping huge amounts of changes into an article is very likely to get you reverted. One way you might want to proceed would be to make incremental small edits to the current version of the article, and see how they are received. You can also discuss your proposed changes with other editors on the article's talk page; we are actually quite friendly and willing to help other editors get started.

You might want to start out by pointing out the incorrect statements in the current article on the talk page. Regarding the CAS number: the current article has the CAS number for Nα-Lauroyl-L-arginine ethyl ester, yours had the CAS number for Ethyl-Nα-lauroyl-L-arginate hydrochloride; I'm not a chemist, but isn't one just the HCl salt of the other? — The Anome (talk) 10:42, 11 April 2023 (UTC)

GNIS? coordinates

On April 24, The Anomebot2 added coords to the articles of a bunch of obscure, possibly defunct communities in the United States (as I write this, they are all at the top of the bot's contributions page), including "source:GNIS-enwiki" in the {{coord}} template. As near as I can tell, none of these places are currently in the GNIS database, although some of the articles contain (inoperative) refs to GNIS, indicating that they may have formerly been in the database. The thing that's bothering me is that in at least one case that I checked (Bluff, Texas), the coordinates seem to be demonstrably incorrect—the article says that the place is or was in Fayette County, and the external link in it specifies a location just across the Colorado River from La Grange, Texas, but the coordinates the bot added are for a location in Red River County, hundreds of miles from La Grange. Where is the bot getting these coordinates?

(Note: I was tempted to nominate all these articles for deletion because many have a GNIS ref that no longer works as their sole reference and some—like the Bluff, Texas, one—contain no reference at all. I decided, however, to nominate one, here, and see how it goes. I may end up prodding many of them.)

Deor (talk) 19:01, 29 April 2023 (UTC)

They're from correlating the name of the article with the place names in the GNIS database. If there's only one place with a given (aggressively normalized) name in both GNIS and Wikipedia, the bot's back end considers them equivalent. The code is written to take care to deal properly with things like counties and parenthetical suffixes as disambiguators, and the bot itself has a whole bunch of heuristics to catch false positives. I have logs of every addition they bot has made to date, so I can regenerate the dataset with the latest versiom of the GNIS database and Wikipedia page name list and check my edit logs for errors.

If there are systematic errors, I can send the bot back again to either correct those errors, or if it is not possible to add a correct value, to remove the tags completely. I will investigate the example you gave me; it is recent, so it should already be using up-to-date data.

Please note that I don't advocate or support mass-creating articles from database entries; that way madness lies. — The Anome (talk) 22:30, 29 April 2023 (UTC)

I haven't had a chance to look at all of them yet, but if it's any help, some that I have noticed with clearly wrong coordinates are Sand Hills, Florida (coordinates did not match description of location in article), Rich Valley, Virginia (likewise), Minarets, California (likewise), New Bridge, Georgia (wrong county), and Rush Creek, Wise County, Texas (admittedly, the article's lead placed this in Wise County, but the reference is about a place in Navarro County, so I've moved the article to Rush Creek, Navarro County, Texas and changed the lead). I've just deleted the coordinates in the last three and replaced the coordinates (on the basis of the articles' descriptions and Google Maps) in the Sand Hills and Rich Valley articles. I have a feeling that the erroneous coordinates in, at least, the Sand Hills, Rich Valley, and New Bridge articles were due to the presence of multiple places of the same name in the relevant states. Deor (talk) 02:17, 30 April 2023 (UTC)
Further data points for incorrect coordinates: Pittsburg, New Mexico; Lema, California; Kentucky Flat, California; and Ross Bridge, Alabama (all clearly wrong counties). I can't tell about Mira Creek, Nebraska and Bijou Basin, Colorado; the coordinates the bot added seem to be in the wrong counties, but they are very near the counties named in the articles—the county borders may have been redrawn at some time. The Anomebot2,{{coord missing}} and article subject with no specifiable coordinates

Hi, The Anomebot2 just added the template {{coord missing}} to Suomen Tivoli. The article is, however, about a traveling carnival so I don't think there's any sensible coordinates to add. Is there something I could add/remove/modify in the page source to ensure the template is not re-added by the bot after I remove it? Ljleppan (talk) 12:21, 2 June 2023 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Rupert Street (disambiguation)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Rupert Street (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
  • is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. • As a part of the Wikimedia Foundation's IP Masking project, a new policy has been created that governs the access to temporary account IP addresses. An associated FAQ has been created and individual communities can increase the requirements to view temporary account IP addresses.

  Technical news

  • Bot operators and tool maintainers should schedule time in the coming months to test and update their tools for the effects of IP masking. IP masking will not be deployed to any content wiki until at least October 2023 and is unlikely to be deployed to the English Wikipedia until some time in 2024.

  Arbitration

  • The arbitration case World War II and the history of Jews in Poland has been closed. The topic area of Polish history during World War II (1933-1945) and the history of Jews in Poland is subject to a "reliable source consensus-required" contentious topic restriction.

June 2023

Hello, I'm Rctgamer3. I noticed that you added or changed content in an article, UVB-76, but you didn't provide a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now, but if you'd like to include a citation and re-add it, please do so. You can have a look at referencing for beginners. If you think I made a mistake, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Rctgamer3 (talk) 19:02, 14 June 2023 (UTC)
