ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:26, 29 November 2022 (UTC)

  • A new preference named "Enable limited width mode" has been added to the Vector 2022 skin. The preference is also shown as a toggle on every page if your monitor is 1600 pixels or wider. When disabled it removes the whitespace added by Vector 2022 on the left and right of the page content. Disabling this preference has the same effect as enabling the wide-vector-2022 gadget. Vandalism?

How is this "vandalism"? Drmies (talk) 15:07, 17 December 2022 (UTC)

And how is this "vandalism"? Drmies (talk) 15:08, 17 December 2022 (UTC)

You can ask United States Man on that one as it's definitely acting as the same IP user prior to the edit. – The Grid (talk) 21:51, 17 December 2022 (UTC)

While we're on the topic: how was this "vandalism"? And if it was, why didn't you explain to the editor what was supposed to be wrong? Drmies (talk) 15:10, 17 December 2022 (UTC)

Maybe when they respond to a prior revert as such here, it looks like they are well aware of Wikipedia's policies and guidelines on an IP. I eventually warned them. – The Grid (talk) 21:57, 17 December 2022 (UTC)

Howdy — re: the Bloop IPC removal

I haven't looked at the page in some time after having been its primary editor for years shouting science into the wind, as it were; however, you may have missed the extensive agonizing discussion in the talk page archive about this minor page's IPC section and its format as of a (mumble) bunch of years ago. I recognize that indiscriminate lists of rando bits are out of scope of Wikipedia but honestly the page is so minor on its own, especially now that it has been "definitively" shown to be simply be a mostly silly combination of ice calving and an over-excited retiring NOAA executive, and not some freaky giant sea monster, that I would offer that the rationale for removing the IPC is identical to merely removing the page itself in spite of our many years of (again) former agonizing edits to maintain it. I would like to suggest restoration of the IPC section, or actually preferably just deletion of the page itself.

Examining a number of the edits in that page, it's clear that some editors (like Spintendo for example) are racing through the page and making edit assumptions which aren't actually accurate. (For example, in 3 Sep 2018, they removed an external reference which wasn't actually the same sound as the one on NOAA's site, but actually an entirely different waveform which that person retrieved from the program directly in email communications. On the other hand, there was no write-up about it in the article, so why would anyone have expected anybody to know, right.) So.. heh, yeah, I do not believe this page has survived the years in reasonable form, to be honest. Anyway, hope you have a nice weekend. Kothog (talk) 00:13, 16 January 2023 (UTC)

Fort Myers

Just for the sake of discussion, I'm not convinced that leaving references to Ian out of the lead is correct. I normally oppose WP:recentism, but that doesn't mean all recent events should be excluded. Ian was far more destructive than Charley, Irma, Donna etc. Given the scale of both damage and the length of time recovery will take, I find it tough to argue that it isn't one of the most notable events in the history of the city and think it probably merits a mention in the lead. Niteshift36 (talk) 16:14, 25 January 2023 (UTC)

I see what you mean but maybe first a section could be made about tropical cyclones that have affected the city? Donna, Charley, Irma, and Ian would be sufficient material. There's also a few storms in the 19th century. I think once we have a foundation in the article, we can then add it to the lede. – The Grid (talk) 18:24, 25 January 2023 (UTC)
  • Keeping in mind that the article is about the city, Charley, Donna and Irma had minimal effects on the city of Fort Myers. Ian, on the other hand, was very impactful on the city. The storm surge that Ian produced was unprecedented in the Fort Myers area. I don't see how refusing to mention it until there is a section about it is really making the encyclopedia more informative. It feels more to me like being slaved to the MOS and WP:LEAD guidelines. Niteshift36 (talk) 21:39, 25 January 2023 (UTC)
I am trying to think if there's any city articles that have used a meteorological event in their lede. I don't even think New Orleans did after Katrina. It's really more about consistency. You want to continue this on the talk page for more opinions? – The Grid (talk) 01:01, 26 January 2023 (UTC)
Niteshift36, I started a discussion on the Fort Myers talk page. – The Grid (talk) 15:40, 26 January 2023 (UTC)
