DYK nomination for The Mystery of the Druids

Hello! Your submission of The Mystery of the Druids at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and there still are some issues that may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! Chris (talk) 20:49, 26 March 2011 (UTC)

Hello again and thanks for your input as I struggled through my first article. I have 'moved' it for review, which I believe was the correct thing to do? Please take a look at it. Regards and good luck with that backlog! Steam buff (talk) 23:07, 26 March 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the copyediting on The Mystery of the Druids

Thanks for the copyediting, I've expanded the article quite a bit: plot now covers the whole game but is more concise, added a short character section with just the main characters and fleshed out the setting section as a result. If you get a chance, would you mind doing a bit more copyediting just to get it a bit tighter? It isn't really my strong suit. Thanks again. ScottSteiner (talk) 08:54, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

Sephira Page

Hi there,

You said if I need a page for Sephira (the UK artist not the IE artist) to just write one.

What is wrong with having the info on the same page as the IE based artist?

If a new page is the way to do it then surely the main Sephira page should point to two pages - a Sephira IE page and a Sephira UK page.

I think it would be disadvantageous and slightly unfair to give one artist the main page and not the other.

The fairest solution seems to be to either have one page describing both entities or a page for each entity (neither of which is called just "Sephira").

Please advise.

Merkabatribe (talk) 12:18, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

That's not the way we do it when there are only two relevant articles, see WP:DISAMBIGUATION. – ukexpat (talk) 14:06, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

Ronn Torossian

Thank you for the welcome - it lit a spark in me to get to you. You blocked an edit by someone touching the page here above and I have a comment: I see that while the NYTimes is a valid reference, the balance should be equally as strong. Gawker is not that. You say that the users ought to go to the Talk page, and some have, but editors allow mean spirited edits and remove the edits that try to balance.

If one wishes to argue Gawker is a valid source, maybe the comment on Torossian's style would be the balance to the NYTimes -(that is if you want to argue Gawker=NYTimes)- but the part about the Gawker columnist writing that Torossian not be that bright is just unnecessarily mean and only there for the purpose of disparaging. I would hope true objective Wikipedia editors would see this and realize that this while edit war it about highlighting the issues that make Torossian look as bad as oboased.ne can.

I would appreciate knowing how edits occur and why some people are automatically called shills for an issue and others are considered genuinely non biased. In the case here, this page is being hit by a feud and clearly Torossian supporters are trying to undo the comments that he seems to think reflect badly, but the ones who keep coming back do not seem so pure of heart either. When does Wikipedia step in and comment on both sides? --BetHillel (talk) 21:22, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

  • First, I will assume good faith that you are not one of the Torossian supporters that I have talked with earlier. You must understand that the lack of respect for our policies shown by the earlier users on Torossian's page can really sap one's patience.
  • Secondly, I have commented on the source in question on Talk:Ronn Torossian.
  • Thirdly, it takes quite a bit of editing here to become familiar with policies and learn how to edit with consensus. No one is "pure of heart", we all have our biases, but I have observed that the vast majority of experienced editors here do their best to balance viewpoints. When a dispute gets out of control, the site administrators do step in and try more formal mediation. There are already several admins who are watching that page. So my advice would be, have patience, comment in good faith on the article's talk page, and engage with those you disagree with. You will find the experience much more rewarding than those who edit-war and write hasty comments. The Interior (Talk) 21:36, 30 March 2011 (UTC)
and that is appreciated. I believe that you are the only one from what I see here who took the time to read the edits and made a comment. That is all I asked. The Torossian page was dormant for a long while and then in February it started up again and some of the writers on the anti-RT side seem bent on bringing up old news. As for his politics, I don't agree or disagree; I just gawk - so to speak. As for Torossian - I know of him, and have followed his news. He has been in business since '03 or so now and stories about his brashness have not been told in over two years. I think he's matured, learned a lot and keeps a lower profile. That the news comes up now and dredges old stuff that is not adding new value or insight is telling to me.

Me: I have edited Wikipedia for years under a different name and have tens of thousands of edits on many pages having little to do with this. Over the past 13 months or so, I dropped out and stopped as my job had me on the road and access to a computer and signal and hours in the day was not great. I also can't remember the password and the email I used is dead so I am beginning anew, but probably wont achieve what I did on the last round.

Thanks --BetHillel (talk) 21:50, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

Sorry for horning in. I just wanted to say that if you know Ronn Torossian personally, as you suggest, you might want to refrain from editing the articles about him and about 5WPR, to avoid a conflict of interest. HOwever, if you have sources (reliable ones, of course) that say that Torossian has mellowed in the last three years, and today has a less aggressive and more conventional PR style, I would be glad to see them and to include them in the story. I searched for such references myself, but could find none. Thanks for your help, --Ravpapa (talk) 15:40, 31 March 2011 (UTC)

Appreciate commentary on Torossian page and realize sockpuppets may have existed but that doesnt allow a biased living person bio. Torossian is prominent due to PR work and his bio should be reflected as such. Even Israel work is extremely biased (with blog references, his website used inaccurately reflecting Elon as a client which doesnt appear as client on site, and negative Rabbi comments only). Bad user behavior doesnt mean a BLP is punished because of it. Wikipedia shouldnt be about that. 199.19.186.9 (talk) 21:58, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
I really don't know who I'm talking to here. You folks would make things so much easier if the account hopping would stop. At this point, with the article protected, there is no strategic advantage to using multiple accounts. The Interior (Talk) 22:10, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
From reviewing your work you are a very fair editor can you review please ?

1: Where is statement Torossian is an active supporter of Israel - They appear to be clients, so lead should be removed ? 2: The Forward states something different regarding Our Jerusalem than does the other source on page jerusalem Post to which should be changed: http://www.jpost.com/Features/InTheSpotlight/Article.aspx?id=150936 During what would turn out to be a two-year stint in this country, Torossian was one of three founders - together with fellow Betar alumni and peers, today Likud MK Danny Danon and Kadima MK Yoel Hasson - of Yerushalayim Shelanu (Jerusalem Is Ours), a secular organization promoting the right of Jews to live anywhere they choose in the city of Jerusalem. 3: Rabbi Morris Allen, who heads an organization that exposed fraud in one of 5WPR's clients, called the firm's tactics in defending the client "outrageous, to say the least."[9] If Allen speaks about firm, why on Torossian's personal page ? 4: Torossian is active in supporting pro-Israeli causes, especially those associated with the Israeli right wing. ( THEY ARE CLIENTS - ANY SOURCES SAY OTHERWISE ?)& same goes with christian supporters of Israel - These are clients. And the article seems to be biased & doesnt mention he has worked for Foreign Ministry and Tourism Ministry of Israel and Likud Party: [4]. has also represented Israel Prime Ministers Ehud Olmert and Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu. http://www.thejewishweek.com/features/confident_comeback He has also trained Israeli government officials for media appearances. http://www.prweekus.com/israel-branding-effort-aims-to-humanize-nations-image/article/56167/ Appreciate your interest and commentary. And this is all seperate from clients and is core work which is what makes him noteable. greenbay1313 (talk) 02:30, 4 April 2011 (UTC)

GOCE drive newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors March 2011 backlog elimination drive report

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2011 Backlog elimination drive. Thank you for participating in the March 2011 drive! This newsletter summarizes the March drive and other recent events.

Participation

GOCE March 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

There were 99 signups for the drive; of these, 70 participated. Interest was high mainly due to a link to our event from the Watchlist page. We had a record-breaking 84 articles listed on the Requests page in March; 11 of these have been promoted to Good article status so far. Several of our recent efforts have received Featured Article status as well, and the GOCE is becoming a solid resource for the Wikipedia community. Many thanks to editors who have been helping out at the Requests page and by copy editing articles from the backlog.

Progress report

Remarkable progress was made in reducing the backlog this month, as we now have fewer than 500 articles remaining from 2009. We are well under the 4,000-article mark for the total number remaining in the queue. Since our backlog drives began in May 2010 with 8,323 articles, we have cleared more than 53% of the backlog. A complete list of results and barnstars awarded can be found here. Barnstars will be distributed over the next week. If you enjoyed participating in our event, you may also like to join the Wikification drives, which are held on alternate months to our drives. Their April drive has started.

New coodinators

On March 21, SMasters appointed Chaosdruid (talk) and Torchiest (talk) as Guild coordinators to serve in place of The Utahraptor, who recently stepped down. Please feel free to contact any coordinator if you have any questions or need assistance.

you seem to be on a mission.

yes, an editor does not need my permission; however, the polite way would be to have a conversation with another editor as to why a change is being made. additionally, responding to my inquiry would have been polite and appreciated.

why you feel you have to interject yourself into someone else's concern is another question entirely and something, perhaps, you should address.

Nell 19:59, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

Nell, there is no "someone else's concern" when it comes to Wikipedia, the fact that you still believe that there is shows that you either have not read, or fail to comprehend, WP:OWN.--Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 20:33, 20 April 2011 (UTC)

Your edit to John Prendergast

JohninDC approved that link. --Jespah (talk) 07:39, 11 May 2011 (UTC)

Well, I said it wasn't inherently improper. And it didn't seem, to me, to be excessive. But I can see how another editor might view the addition of yet another list of Prendergast appearances as too much. JohnInDC (talk) 13:04, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
In that case, who wins? --Jespah (talk) 19:53, 11 May 2011 (UTC)
Take up the issue on the Talk page. But by and large, Jespah, given your unceasing propensity for over-linking and promotional fluff, I would tend to side with editors who are inclined to take it out. JohnInDC (talk) 10:57, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
Really - no need to be rude. Find your remark a bit peculiar since you approved it prior to another editor's removal of link. It is just this sort of comment that makes involvement with wikipedia so stressful and unpleasant. --Jespah (talk) 21:10, 12 May 2011 (UTC)Jespah (talk) 21:00, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
I apologize for seeming rude. I am just - disappointed that these issues keep coming up and coming up. And, please. I didn't "approve" it. I said it wasn't improper, and in fact warned that it might appear promotional. It didn't offend me particularly, but as I said, if another editor is bothered by it, it will be hard for me to defend it. JohnInDC (talk) 21:32, 12 May 2011 (UTC)
Thank you. --Jespah (talk) 21:47, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

Jespah, if you need to communicate with me about content issues, please use the article talk page. I will respond there. Next time you post here, I will simply delete your message. This is not proper use of a person's talk page, and frankly, I'm getting tired of it. John, thanks for replying in my absence. The Interior (Talk) 17:46, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

All you had to do is nicely ask me, as I was unaware of yet another rule. Frankly, I am very tried of your offensive attitude. For the second time, I ask that you please refrain from editing my work, as you create an extremely stressful and unpleasant atmosphere; there are an abundance of editors who can take your place. I ask again, please stop! If you are a nice person, you will. --Jespah (talk) 22:48, 14 May 2011 (UTC)
I think it's just a prescription for heartache to take Wikipedia editing tussles personally. Some people are of course more pleasant to deal with than others, but in my own experience The Interior is nowhere near the ugly end of the spectrum. Again Jespah, if having your work criticized or reworked causes you stress then you should stop editing. Or at the very least make a more devoted study of the policies and principles that guide the place so that your work is more likely to fall within them. If you are able to do that then over time you will find that other editors will pretty much leave you alone. Indeed in that regard you really should take something from the fact that in *all* of the many discussions, spread across many pages concerning your edits and style, not one other editor has consistently taken your side of things - sooner or later, every experienced editor concludes that you're unwilling, or unable, to edit independently and responsibly. I am trying to be nice about this, rather than rude, but there is no altogether pleasant way of saying that if there is a problem here, it is almost entirely of your making - and, for that reason, almost entirely your responsibility to correct. JohnInDC (talk) 02:44, 15 May 2011 (UTC)
My remark was not directed at you. I don't appreciate your intrusion. How you perceive "The Insider" and how I do - how he treats you and how he treats me are entirely different. So, please, don't tell me what you don't understand. Additionally, it is not editing of my work that is upsetting, it is the way in which some editors address me. Perhaps you will consider editing someone else as well. --Jespah (talk) 03:22, 15 May 2011 (UTC)
The very first word of your very first post on this Talk page is my *name*; so please don't now try to tell me I'm not involved here. I am trying to offer useful advice, Jespah. It is the same advice that you have received from almost every other editor who has come into contact with you: Namely, learn your way around Wikipedia -- and stop trying to press your own agenda. Blaming others for your travails here is not going to end them. I'm sorry if my directness puts you off but suggestions and hints have not had the desired effect, and to be honest, I'm tired of thinking up circumlocutions and other ways of softening the point. JohnInDC (talk) 03:52, 15 May 2011 (UTC)
(And apologies to The Interior for hijacking his Talk page while he's on Wikibreak. If it continues any longer, we'll move it.) JohnInDC (talk) 03:53, 15 May 2011 (UTC)
You are not involved when I direct a comment to someone else. You don't seem to understand that editors do not have to be rude when commenting. That has nothing to do with my knowledge of Wikipedia. We are not talking now about my contributions. So, please. --Jespah (talk) 04:34, 15 May 2011 (UTC)

GOCE drive invitation

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors

The latest GOCE backlog elimination drive is under way! It began on 1 July and so far 18 people have signed up to help us reduce the number of articles in need of copyediting.

This drive will give a 50% bonus for articles edited from the GOCE requests page. Although we have cleared the backlog of 2009 articles there are still 3,935 articles needing copyediting and any help, no matter how small, would be appreciated.

We are appealing to all GOCE members, and any other editors who wish to participate, to come and help us reduce the number of articles needing copyediting, as well as the backlog of requests. If you have not signed up yet, why not take a look at the current signatories and help us by adding your name and copyediting a few articles. Barnstars will be given to anyone who edits more than 4,000 words, with special awards for the top 5 in the categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words".

Vandalism revert explained: Hotel del Coronado

I admit that the vandalism tag was not correct, but the edit - I feel - is justified. The edit added a discussion of how the architecture of the Hotel del Coronado influenced the design of the Grand Rapids Hotel. There are many copycat hotels that came after the original design. If it is to be included, I suggest a paragraph titled "Architectural influences" or something like that. I can take his work and incorporate it into the article. Can you please tell me which blog link I've used in my editing? Please do not wrongly term ordinary website links with blog links. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 07:12, 22 September 2011 (UTC)
Hello, The Interior, Please do not misunderstand me. On the link that you've mentioned, I did not refer to Ali Sina's blog. My plain text under the heading "Doubts about Ali Sina" backed by references (not active here) is as follows. In case if you find any blog reference, please let me know. Have a pleasant day and please do not hesitate to revert to me with your esteemed views. Hoping the very best for you: There are a number of reasons for doubting Ali Sina’s claim of being an ex-Muslim based in Canada. Firstly, the according to the IP Track Reports, the server of the website Faithfreedom.org is located in the Dallas city of Texas, USA.[8] Secondly, Faithfreedom.org has a special inclination for Israel as can be seen from the messages posted by Ali Sina or on his behalf on websites such as Israelforum.com [9][10][11] Thirdly, Ali Sina has used very harsh words for the Muslim world such as “If any city in the West is nuked I am 100% for nuking tens of cities in Islamic countries. I don’t see Muslims as innocent people. They are all guilty as sin. It is not necessary to be part of al Qaida to be guilty. If you are a Muslim you agree with Muhammad and that is enough evidence against you.”[12] Obviously, if he were to be from Iran, as he claims[13], he would not arguing for nuking his relatives still residing in that country. According to a write-up posted on Scribd.com, Ali sina is a Baha’i posing as an ex-Muslim.[14]Further, the claim by that Faithfreedom.org website is viewed by over 300,000 people per month[15] is also doubtful considering the fact that Faithfreedom.org is ranked # 36,057 in the world according to the three-month Alexa traffic rankings.[16] Another issue related to Ali Sina and his website is that some of the Islamist critics have claimed to have completely refuted the “accusations” of Ali Sina about the Prophet of Islam – a challenge which carries a reward sum of 50,000 US dollars. recent removal of edits

Good Morning, A few moments ago you removed a large edit I had provided to the Victoria, BC page. Thank you for your note saying the promotional items were not appropriate. May I ask specifically what was too promotional in my edits?

Fortunately I have learned to save this type of work to avoid starting from scratch so here is what I posted. If you could highlight the areas of concern I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Wait a minute, I re-added the opening paragraph which is simply facts with citations and you have removed that again? Please explain how that is too promotional but all the other content surrounding it is okay? Thank you.

Technology industry

Advanced Technology is Victoria's largest revenue producing private industry with $1.95 billion in annual revenues generated by more than 800 tech companies that have over 13,000 direct employees[1]. The annual economic impact of the sector is estimated at more than $2.65 billion per year[2]. With three post secondary institutions, eight federal research labs, and Canada's Pacific Navy Base, Victoria is a natural location for innovation to thrive. Thanks to an excellent communications infrastructure Victoria has Canada's highest household internet usage and is ranked as "Canada's Smartest City" by Macleans Magazine[3] .

The May 24, 2007 edition of the Victoria Times-Colonist newspaper reported that for the first time in Victoria history, high technology has overtaken tourism as the top performing economic sector in Greater Victoria. A gala awards event was staged at the Victoria Conference Centre for business executives and companies that achieved excellence in their respective fields.

The greatest challenge faced by Victoria tech firms is recruitment. With the industry largely unrecognized many qualified potential employees do not think of Victoria as a potential place to find a rewarding career. In response, The Victoria Advanced Technology Council (VIATeC) the local tech industry association charged with promoting high tech industry development in the Victoria region has offered an online job board that typically lists up to 100 current job vacancies in the sector. In April of 2011, VIATeC launched a new web site, VictoriaTechJobs.com that along with job postings includes a resume bank and company profiles for people looking for a tech career in Victoria as well as career profile videos targeted at students considering education and career options.

Tectoria; Where Ideas Grow

To further raise awareness of the burgeoning sector, VIATeC has partnered with its members and launched a marketing campaign in June, 2011 dubbing the region as Tectoria. The campaign is planned for at least three years and includes signage and promotional materials at most of the region's entry points informing the many visitors to the city that not only is Victoria a beautiful place to visit but the option to live and work in the region is possible due to the many tech jobs and investment opportunities. Early efforts included ads throughout the downtown core on parking kiosks as well as the baggage carousels at Victoria International Airport. The campaign aims to reenforce Victoria's reputation as a beautiful place and rich history with new facts about the tech sector. Examples include phrases like; "Welcome to Tectoria...Home of 100 Killer Whales and 1500 Killer Apps".

Please take a look at WP:NPOV. The content you are trying to add is clearly promotional towards the high-tech industry in Victoria. Of the content you propose, I would only weakly support a re-worded version of your first paragraph. The rest is clearly designed to emphasize your group's talking points and drive traffic to your various sites. It is definitely not appropriate for a general-interest page on a city. As such, I've reverted it and will continue to do so. Repeated attempts to add this material will lead to a block, as I have noted on your talk page. Thanks, The Interior (Talk) 14:28, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

The repeated attempts were made thinking that a technical error had occurred. Now let's work this through. A list of tourism facts and destinations is fine below so what can we change to the opening paragraph on tech? — Preceding unsigned comment added by VIATeC (talkcontribs) 14:33, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

How about this?

Technology industry

Advanced Technology is Victoria's largest revenue producing private industry with $1.95 billion in annual revenues generated by more than 800 tech companies that have over 13,000 direct employees[4]. The annual economic impact of the sector is estimated at more than $2.65 billion per year[5]. With three post secondary institutions, eight federal research labs, and Canada's Pacific Navy Base, Victoria has many of the elements required for a strong innovation infrastructure. Victoria has Canada's highest household internet usage and is ranked as "Canada's Smartest City" by Macleans Magazine[6] .

That should be okay, but I'm a bit worried about the penultimate sentence: "innovation infrastructure" sounds dodgy. Go ahead and add this paragraph to the Victoria page, and I'll make some changes. On another note, Wikipedia does not allow accounts that represent groups or companies. You will have to change you username if you want to continue editing. I'll leave a link on your Talk page describing how to do this. Thanks for being communicative, The Interior (Talk) 14:43, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the welcome.

This was my first edit so I might have hit my head on something there. No worries, I'll get the hang of it, and I'll use the helpme when need be.

Just the picture, I kinda made it sound like it's the whole thing didn't I ? The data seems ok from what I see. The problem is just the big red error message saying the image is wrong, and it's the first thing on the page. It is still a good reference nonetheless, I really didn't have to remove it. Thanks again. Take care.Bleedleaf (talk) 08:17, 19 September 2011 (UTC)

News and progress from RfA reform 2011

RfA reform: ...and what you can do now.

(You are receiving this message because you are either a task force member, or you have contributed to recent discussions on any of these pages.)

The number of nominations continues to nosedive seriously, according to these monthly figures. We know why this is, and if the trend continues our reserve of active admins will soon be underwater. Wikipedia now needs suitable editors to come forward. This can only be achieved either through changes to the current system, a radical alternative, or by fiat from elsewhere.

A lot of work is constantly being done behind the scenes by the coordinators and task force members, such as monitoring the talk pages, discussing new ideas, organising the project pages, researching statistics and keeping them up to date. You'll also see for example that we have recently made tables to compare how other Wikipedias choose their sysops, and some tools have been developed to more closely examine !voters' habits.

The purpose of WP:RFA2011 is to focus attention on specific issues of our admin selection process and to develop RfC proposals for solutions to improve them. For this, we have organised the project into dedicated sections each with their own discussion pages. It is important to understand that all Wikipedia policy changes take a long time to implement whether or not the discussions appear to be active - getting the proposals right before offering them for discussion by the broader community is crucial to the success of any RfC. Consider keeping the pages and their talk pages on your watchlist; do check out older threads before starting a new one on topics that have been discussed already, and if you start a new thread, please revisit it regularly to follow up on new comments.

The object of WP:RFA2011 is not to make it either easier or harder to become an admin - those criteria are set by those who !vote at each RfA. By providing a unique venue for developing ideas for change independent of the general discussion at WT:RFA, the project has two clearly defined goals:

  1. Improving the environment that surrounds RfA in order to encourage mature, experienced editors of the right calibre to come forward, pass the interview, and dedicate some of their time to admin tasks.
  2. Discouraging, in the nicest way possible of course, those whose RfA will be obvious NOTNOW or SNOW, and to guide them towards the advice pages.

The fastest way is through improvement to the current system. Workspace is however also available within the project pages to suggest and discuss ideas that are not strictly within the remit of this project. Users are invited to make use of these pages where they will offer maximum exposure to the broader community, rather than individual projects in user space.

We already know what's wrong with RfA - let's not clutter the project with perennial chat. RFA2011 is now ready to propose some of the elements of reform, and all the task force needs to do now is to pre-draft those proposals in the project's workspace, agree on the wording, and then offer them for central discussion where the entire Wikipedia community will be more than welcome to express their opinions in order to build consensus.

New tool Check your RfA !voting history! Since the editors' RfA !vote counter at X!-Tools has been down for a long while, we now have a new RfA Vote Counter to replace it. A significant improvement on the former tool, it provides a a complete breakdown of an editor's RfA votes, together with an analysis of the participant's voting pattern.

Are you ready to help? Although the main engine of RFA2011 is its task force, constructive comments from any editors are always welcome on the project's various talk pages. The main reasons why WT:RfA was never successful in getting anything done are that threads on different aspects of RfA are all mixed together, and are then archived where nobody remembers them and where they are hard to find - the same is true of ad hoc threads on the founder's talk page.
