A Barnstar for Extremely Quick Work

  The RickK Anti-Vandalism Barnstar
You beat me more than five times (even if it is not your intention). And you are very quick!  Merlion  444  13:42, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

P.S. When a vandal-fighter reverts obvious vandalism more than three times on a single article in a short time, is it really considered a violation of the 3RR? Someone thought I violated the 3RR by exceeding the 3RR limit on the article Gautam Gambhir, even if I am reverting vandalism (check the revision history for the article).  Merlion  444  13:42, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the barnstar. And no, reverting vandalism multiple times is not a violation of 3RR. See Wikipedia:3RR#Exceptions_to_3RR, which states, as an exception, "Obvious vandalism – edits which any well-intentioned user would immediately agree constitute vandalism, such as page blanking and adding cruel or offensive language." Hope this helps. Heh, I had a very similar problem around a month ago, in which a newer user didn't know that vandalism reverts were exempt from 3RR... Just a heads up, this looks like the same vandal using an IP anonymizer or an IP-hopping service...don't think there's anything we can do except semi-protect the page, but thought you'd like to know! Frmatt (talk) 06:37, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

Huggle

Hi there, I have been reverting vandalism manually, and warning users on their talk pages manually, and requesting users to be blocked manually. I've heard that Huggle & Twinkle are both easier/faster ways to do this, and I was wondering which one you think is better, and how I can get set-up and trained with either one. Thanks for your help! 40th Infantry Division

After taking some time, I found a source (Nathaniel T. Robertson, Regimental Historian, 185th Armor Regiment) and a page detailing the origination of the "Flaming Assholes" nickname for the 40th Infantry Division (http://www.militarymuseum.org/40Korea.html). How would you suggest I format this addition? 84.254.189.80 (talk) 12:57, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

Ok, you can insert it by using <ref>http://www.militarymuseum.org/40Korea.html</ref>, or by using the much more detailed {{Citeweb}} template. As for the source itself... you might wish to contact some other editors about the sources' reliability. To be honest, I am not exactly the best person to judge the reliability of a source, although it does look good at first glance. Until It Sleeps Happy Thanksgiving 13:29, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

Username

I liked your old username better, personally, but since you prefer this one, would you be willing to also register User:TTTSNB and redirect it to here? It's a lot easier to type, especially given the unusual all-caps style (lots of people are going to want to decapitalize "that" and "not" and "be" on analogy with book titles). -- Soap Talk/Contributions 13:51, 14 November 2009 (UTC)

Congratulations, The Thing That Should Not Be! For your kindness to others, your hard work around the wiki, and for being a great user, you have been awarded the "Wikipedian of the Day" award for today, November 15th, 2009! Keep up the great work!
Note: You could also recieve the "Wikipedian of the Week award for this week! Décémbér21st2012Fréak  |  Talk 00:02, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

Please actually read what you are reverting

On the page Model United Nations, you reverted an edit by an IP address. Well, as it turns out, that IP address was trying to fix a vandalism, albeit not very well without any tools to use. The person with the username had vandalized it, rather. So, unfortunately, I had to revert it to the original page, where a source was lost in the process.

Grammar error?

Hi, Thing! While surfing through my e-mail archives, I thought I would spend time to surf your userspace. But then...BANG! POW! SCREECH!!! A grammatical error appeared on thou's userpage. Having believed that this may have already been there, and because I perform edits due to an exceptionally retrospect state, I decided to notify thou about this. Why not proceed to blast away this horrifying, but superfluous error away, my friend? :D Schfifty3 04:21, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

Speedy Deletion Converted to PROD: What a ...

Hello The Thing That Should Not Be, and thanks for your work patrolling new changes. I am just informing you that I have changed a page you tagged (What a ...) from being tagged for speedy deletion to being tagged for proposed deletion. The speedy deletion criteria are very narrow to protect the encyclopedia, and do not fit the page in question. Please review the criteria for speedy deletion before tagging further pages. If you have any questions or problems, please let me know. Thanks again! Coffee // have a cup // ark // 09:04, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

Well, it would that this particular discussion is moot, as the article has been deleted via CSD-A3... Personally I didn't see why that article belonged in the encyclopedia in the first place, and why we needed to wait 7 days to get rid of it... and I guess Killiondude felt the same way when he saw it... Thanks anyways for stopping by. The thing that should not be 03:15, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I am not an administrator, so I don't have the ability to block editors. Even if I were an administrator, the other user on your network hasn't vandalized enough to warrant a block. Vandal, I don't know how to block him from editing

Hi. You and numerous others have warned user 206.180.83.2 that he would be blocked for vandalism, and the vandalism goes on. I looked at his history and every one of his entrants is vandalism. For many months. Many of the edits are still on the pages. Please yank him, thanks, Randy Kryn (talk) 02:47, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but I am not an administrator, so I cannot block him. But, just so you know, even if I were an admin, I would not block him, because he has not vandalized recently. His latest vandalism was 3 whole days ago. However, if you do happen to see him actively vandalizing articles after he has been sufficiently warned (4 warnings in a short period of time, say a couple of hours, is sufficient, or if he has an "only warning" if his vandalism is severe), then you can report him here, and an administrator will usually take care of it in a couple minutes, depending on the time of day. I hope this helps. Cheers! The sock that should not be (talk) 02:59, 29 November 2009 (UTC)

I would have you contact him, but he hasn't edited for over a month, and I don't have the source code for his version, nor the expertise to modify it to work on another user's subpages. Deleting other editor’s edits to talk pages

Hi the Thing That Should Not Be. It may not have been your itention, but with this edit you removed a posting I made to another editor’s talk page. If it was done by WP:Huggle, which I noticed you were using, then it is a foible that should be reported. Thanks! — SpikeToronto 16:18, 3 December 2009 (UTC)

P.S. I did not re-instate my edits, because it turned out that the editor was indeed vandalizing and deserved only what you gave him. The edits I was reverting weren’t entirely clear as such. S/he’s since had his/her last warning. — SpikeToronto 16:18, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
It looks like Huggle might have edit-conflicted with you in a way which removed what you added. I'm sorry if that inconvenienced you. The thing that should not be 17:08, 3 December 2009 (UTC)
I wasn’t inconvenienced. In the end, he deserved what you gave him, not my benefit of the doubt. Perhaps, though, it should be reported to Huggle’s masters … See you on recent changes patrol! — SpikeToronto 19:22, 3 December 2009 (UTC)

How's the photo now? Is it still scrolling off of your screen? The thing that should not be 17:59, 8 December 2009 (UTC)
The photo does not scroll off now, but there are still problems with the user boxes. Some of them are just above the upper left corner of the photo, covering up stuff the viewer should see. The tool I was discussing in IRC

I thought I would let you know, I've posted the motivation and purpose statement for CollabRC (tenatively-named), the tool I was discussing in IRC a few days ago that I would like to develop to improve the capabilities of rollbackers on Wikipedia. I thought you might be interested in it and wanted to invite you personally to look it over and let me know if you have any specific features or criticisms that may be constructive for the project. I hope you don't feel this is inappropriate canvassing; I just respect you and figured you might want to get a better idea of where I am going, and I value your input. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns, or if you have any comments regarding the project itself, feel free to bring it up on the talk page there. I'm sorry, but that is not possible. First, I am not an administrator. I honestly don't know, as soon as I logged onto Wiki it said I had a message, and when I clicked it, it was a warning. My last edit had been on Immolation.

I believe I have found what you are referring to. I found that you had edited my vandalbox from another IP address, asking about the same problem. This is what the warnings were referring to, which was back in August. Since it was so long ago, someone else's computer was most likely assigned that IP address, and vandalized from it. I found that amusing that I vandalized you, and I get a welcome message. Fun 203.81.228.162 (talk) 04:44, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

I find this amusing too, but couldn't you use that energy of yours to do something constructive? I see that's why PlastikSpork welcomed you in the first place. The Thing Merry Christmas 20:31, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

Mentorship Committee

I'm contacting you because your name is listed at Wikipedia:Meetup/Utah.

Please consider reviewing my edit at Wikipedia:Mentorship#Unintended consequences. In the search for a mentor deemed acceptable by ArbCom, I plan to cite this as a useful context for discussing what I have in mind.

There is no obvious congruence between your editing interests and mine, but perhaps that disjunction might be construed as a potentially interesting aspect of this invitation.

In any case -- even you are disinclined to pursue the primary thrust of this diff, I wonder if I tweak your curiosity by pointing to an article about 95-year-old Patrick Lennox Tierney (1913- ), who is a Japanologist academic in the field of art history, an emeritus professor of the University of Utah, a former Curator of Japanese Art at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, a former Director of the Pacific Asia Museum, and a former Commissioner of Art and Monuments during the Allied occupation of Japan (1945-1952). I think this elderly man still lives near the University. Tierney came to my attention because the Japanese government conferred the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon in 2007.
Perhaps the most intriuging aspect of Tierney's llife was when he work for the Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers (SCAP), Gen. Douglas MacArthur. Tierney was there on the day the Emperor came to offer a formal apology; but when the emperor arrived, MacArthur refused to admit him or acknowledge him. Issues which might have been addressed were allowed to remain open, with consequences which have unfolded in the decades which followed. In 2006, Tierney made an effort to explain his understanding of the significance of what he had personally witnessed: "Apology is a very important thing in Japan. With us, we don't apologize unless we get caught with our hand in the cookie jar, but for the Japanese, there is a very strong sense of what an apology means." According to popular historian Herbert Bix in Hirohito and the Making of Modern Japan, "MacArthur's truly extraordinary measures to save Hirohito from trial as a war criminal had a lasting and profoundly distorting impact on Japanese understanding of the lost war."

Among a prospective mentor's many burdens, the most difficult would involve (a) helping me discern why I might need to apologize or (b) helping me figure out how to explain why I will not apologize in a wiki-context. --Tenmei (talk) 21:46, 25 December 2009 (UTC)

Advice to a Friend on Choosing a Mistress

Please note "Fart Proudly" is another Franklin essay with a similarly notorious history. It is already mentioned in the "Advice to a Friend on Choosing a Mistress" article as 'A Letter to the Royal Academy at Brussels'. "Fart Proudly" has cross-referenced "Advice to a Friend on Choosing a Mistress" since July 2008. I was completing this cross-referencing by adding the appropriate links to the "Advice to a Friend on Choosing a Mistress" article. HNY 208.59.93.238 (talk) 00:25, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

Can you please drop your grudge against me

I don't care that you refuse to believe me. But I am just saying it once and for all. Coffee, treasurytag, ryulong and some others are harassing me. They have been and they have filed false complaints against me and they are trying to get me banned by doing this. So can you please not help them and try to understand that they are doing this to me? I would really appreciate if you would not help them by bad mouthing me without knowing how they are treating me. I would really appreciate it if you would not aid them in making false abuse complaints against me. I don't know what else to say. I am a very nice guy and I do not understand how this is happening to me. It really makes me very sad. I kindly ask that you please treat me fairly. I mean Coffee has been harassing me practicality non stop and nothing is being done about it and instead I am the one getting in trouble. So can you please be nice to me? I don't want any problems with you I really don't.Wiki Greek Basketball (talk) 10:38, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

See this. (Btw, another editor got a comment in before I could append my message further, so there is an extra "vote" in that diff. The Thing Happy New Year! 11:07, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
I reported Coffee and I was banned. So that will not work. I reported him to an admin and I was threatened with a ban. So that does not work. I requested mediation and was banned. So that does not work. Look, I am sorry if I insulted you or was mean to you. OK? This Coffee guy is doing this to me and now everyone hates me. I got upset before and I am sorry for that. But understand Coffee caused the whole thing, ALL of it. He was responsible for that. I apologize for responding like I did. But I served my ban. And now I am being threatened with another ban and I did not do anything wrong. I swear. I have not broken any rules and I have not insulted anyone. And I was not trying to disrupt anything. I don't even understand how or why this is happening to me. Can you please just try to understand I am not a bad person. I am so saddened by what is happening to me. Can you please not paint be like a bad person anymore?Wiki Greek Basketball (talk) 11:13, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
Coffee didn't cause the whole thing, you did with your smug attitude and defensive behavior. Accusing people of being part of a cabal of Coffee's friends is unconstructive and rude--I am not friends with Coffee, nor are many of the others who have commented about your behavior. We're just people who see your behavior as concerning. It's time you stop blaming others for the hole that you've dug yourself into. rʨanaɢ talk/contribs 11:16, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
(edit conflict)I'm wondering if you actually read my entire message on that diff... "He's "done his time", and he has not done such things since he was unblocked, as far as I can see. He just simply needs to take a break from admin-related areas" The Thing Happy New Year! 11:17, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
If anyone can explain to me everything I have done wrong I would appreciate it. I am very confused at this point.Wiki Greek Basketball (talk) 11:22, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
You have committed personal attacks [6] ("Fuck you asshole" is a very blatant personal attack), you were generally incivil [7], and you have edited other's comments so that they attack others. But, that was before you were blocked. I see none of that since you were unblocked. You simply have been stubborn and a bit POINTy since you came back, but it's not as severe as it was a little over a week ago. I understand your position... you're frustrated, perhaps even angry that everyone is mad at you for things that, well, you've already been blocked for. I understand their position as well, but I no longer think that a proposed indef block is anywhere near fitting for this. I believe that you may have received a bit of heat from others comments, including myself, admittedly. But you need to keep cool in situations like this... you need to relax a bit. I suggest that you walk away from the computer for a bit, take a walk outside (unless it's too cold of course), watch some TV. Wikipedia is just a website... it's nothing to get angry and frustrated about. Think about your comments, what the opposers are trying to tell you. We like you as a content editor, but your previous comments, which I mentioned above in the diffs, were way over the top. We just want you to keep your cool, keep relaxed and try to improve on your civility, as you have already done so during the past day. The Thing Happy New Year! 11:38, 2 January 2010 (UTC)
I also know how Coffee's attitude can be at times... I do agree with this comment that you made, and the fact that Coffee's behavior can be a tad bit unnerving at times... I once filed a WQA against him for some quite colorful comments at WT:RFA. You have improved... keep doing so... I don't want to see another content contributor banned... (Arbcom recently banned one for a year). The Thing Happy New Year! 12:10, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

Cannot Read Your User Page

Hi TTTSNB! I cannot read your user page. Your page, and that of other editors’ similarly formatted, does not display correctly on my screen. Your user boxes begin at the top of the screen and then run upwards right off the window. I am using the browser most common amongst Wikipedians … er … have to admit it … Internet Explorer. My screen is humongous and the resolution is 1920 x 1200. So, I cannot figure out the issue.

The reason that I mention it is that others of us with the same display issue may not be able to participate in your editor review if we cannot see the box displayed on your user page. Thanks! — SpikeToronto 19:45, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

There, that should do it. Is it working for you? The Thing Editor Review 22:28, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
Perfectly! So what gives? What is the formatting of the other version that makes it not work? I’ve seen this problem on a few other editors’ user pages, but I do not know what the unique coding is that gives rise to the problem. Thanks TTTSNB!

Btw, I hope your editor review goes well. I don’t have the courage to do one, nor does my talk page have enough watchers to make it worthwhile anyway. — SpikeToronto 02:28, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

Question for administrator

{{adminhelp}} I would like an admin to check over some of my CSD nominations to make sure that they are accurate. The reason being is that I would like to make sure that I'm tagging things correctly. I also have made CSD taggings under my alternate account, and would like the taggings there to be checked if it's feasible. --The Thing Vandalize me 17:21, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

I do in fact have an Editor Review going, but it's picking up reviews quite slowly, as is usually the case with ER's... The Thing Vandalize me 17:30, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
Surely the best of way of checking whether or not your CSD noms are any good is just checking up on the result. I haven't had much of a look personally, but if I remember correctly TW/HG should be able to be set so that it watchlists your CSD nominations and then you can check back to see whether or not the admin has agreed. I'll leave the {{adminhelp}} active just now in case someone fancies giving a more in-depth review. GDonato (talk)
Well the problem with that is after a while I would most likely forget the tag that I used in the article... so even with the deletion log summary, I wouldn't be able to know exactly what tag I used. Say if I tagged a biographical article as A7, and happened to get deleted as an attack page (there might be some attack that I happened to miss in the page)... after a while I wouldn't be able to remember which tag I used... "Did I use A7, or G10?" The Thing Vandalize me 21:01, 13 January 2010 (UTC)
I'm canceling it because it's spamming the IRC channel. Try asking one of the CSD-oriented admins like SoWhy (talk · contribs), perhaps? Timotheus Canens (talk) 20:46, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Automatic Signing of User Talk Pages

Hi TTTSNB! You seem to understand things technical here at Wikipedia, so I have a question for you. Sometimes when another editor leaves a comment on my talk page, and forgets to sign it, the SineBot doesn’t come by and autosign it. Is there some sort of template/flag/tag that I could imbed in my user talk page to ensure that unsigned comments always get signed? I’ve done my best to find something, but to no avail. I can find stuff about opting a page out, or opting an individual in, but nothing about opting a page in. So before I bothered SineBot’s human slave, I thought I’d ask you first. Thanks! — SpikeToronto 05:24, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

I believe you can add [[Category:Non-talk_pages_that_are_automatically_signed]] to your talk page, and the bot will be forced to automatically sign any unsigned posts. The Thing Vandalize me 06:06, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
Ah, great minds do think alike! Awhile ago I added Category:Non-talk pages that are automatically signed to my user talk page and it worked for awhile after that. Then it stopped working. So, I investigated and the coding had disappeared. So, I thought that maybe a bot had come by and removed it since, technically, my talk page is not a non-talk page. But, that cannot be it since there are lots of talk pages listed in that category, and I don’t recall anything in my talk page’s edit history that substantiated that supposition. So, then I thought that, perhaps, I had cut and pasted it into my archives when manually archiving. But, it’s not showing up there either. Do you think, TTTSNB, that if I try the category again it might stick around this time? :) Thanks! — SpikeToronto 06:30, 14 January 2010 (UTC)
UPDATE:  With this edit, I placed the the category at the very top of my talk page. This way, if it was me who cleared it inadvertently while archiving, it will be safe from my carelessness. Thanks again for the advice and feedback. — SpikeToronto 19:04, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

Huggle

Okay, now I have another technical question for you: How did you get it so that Huggle prints “Report Mistake” in your Huggle-generated edit summaries? Do you do it manually under “Advanced”, or did you figure out a way to automate it? Thanks! — SpikeToronto 20:57, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

One-issue cabal/sockpuppet

Hi Thing- I'm looking for advice on how to proceed with an issue regarding multiple usernames--but, I suspect--one person--repeatedly adding the same questionable material on one topic, gemmail. The edits are on that article and Stained glass#twentieth century. Here is a post that will lay it all out: Talk:Gemmail#Marcmaison.2C_aka_Antoine_delorme.2C__aka_AzitaS.3F. The entity keeps re-adding material that a few of us editors have revised and deleted for various problems, making improvement of WP material on this small topic much more tedious than it needs to be. I don't have time to wade through all the guidance on whether I should report a possible sockpuppet, ask for a CheckUser, or notify an admin in some way. Can you give me a kick in the right direction? Thanks in advance. Eric talk 16:35, 17 January 2010 (UTC)

Covert racism and Laissez-Faire Racism

Hello:

I spotted your username in the Rodney King article and thought to ask for assistance.

These pages had problems with lack of citations and neutrality. Not sure how you can be neutral in articles about racism, but have attempted to make them less inflammatory.

I have recently been making edits and adding links and citations to the articles:

I was doing more research on a page I wrote called racebending, which was deleted, as a neologism, twice by a "deletionist". It has some popularity with Avatar: The Last Airbender fans. I currently have it saved in my userpage and you are welcome to have a look and perhaps give some pointers to make it ready for publication; without being deleted again.

I'm... not exactly the best person to ask about the notability of articles, as I'm primarily a vandal-fighter. However, I do know some people who may be able to help, namely User:Juliancolton, or you can ask any one of these active administrators for advice on this subject. Good luck. About vandalboxes

People can put what they want on vandalboxes, but you reverted a huge edit by an IP user. As this is a vandalbox, I undid your edit. Minimac94 (talk) 16:43, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

Thanks.

Thanks for reverting the vandalism done to my talk page. - Zhang He (talk) 17:21, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

RfA thankspam

Hello, The Thing That Should Not Be! This is just a note thanking you for participating in my recent Request for Adminship, which passed with a total of 93 support !votes, 1 oppose and 3 editors remaining neutral. While frankly overwhelmed by the level of support, I humbly thank the community for the trust it has placed in me, and vow to use the tools judiciously and without malice.

How to Prevent Categorization

Hi TTTSNB, ye who knows all technically, I have yet another if my interminable techie questions for you:

I have some username sub-pages that, because of certain templates that are used therein, cause various categories to appear at the bottom of the page. I do have {{NOINDEX}} embedded at the top, but that only prevents a given page from being indexed for search engines by adding __NOINDEX__ to the page.

Do you know of a similar way, on a given page, to globally turn off categorization? What I need is a way so that, even though the various templates are placing categories at the bottom of the page, the pages will not actually show up in the category listings. For instance, if I place {{Unreferenced}} on a username sub-page, I do not want it to appear on Category:Articles lacking sources. (Not the best example, I know. But, it gives you the idea.) Thanks! — SpikeToronto 22:40, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Eastview, Saskatoon

Hi... I saw that you reverted an edit by an anonymous user, 67.225.68.135. It was actually done in good faith, as John Dolan School is meant for students with multiple disabilities. I've re-edited it with a slightly different term. --Drm310 (talk) 17:22, 23 January 2010 (UTC)

Ah, alright, thanks for telling me. The Thing Vandalize me 17:23, 23 January 2010 (UTC)

Deep Run Marching Wildcats

Hi, I've just reverted some vandalism on Deep Run Marching Wildcats. The edit history on the page shows a large number of anon URLS editing it, and large tracts of the content seem to be complete rubbish. I am not even certain that the page is notable (although, i could be entirely wrong on that point). Could you quickly cast your eye over the page and have a look at the sort of content thats on there please. Cheers, Darigan (talk) 14:41, 25 January 2010 (UTC)

Done. The instant I saw "Jack the Ripper" in there, I knew it was dubious... I also removed some unneeded comments and fixed it up a bit. The Thing Vandalize me 15:20, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
Wow you work fast, cheers for having a look, I'll be keeping an eye on it for the foreseeable. Best, Darigan (talk) 15:52, 25 January 2010 (UTC)
