Vandalism on Charlemagne

Hello The Thing,

Recently, you reverted some vandalism on Charlemagne. Unfortunately, you missed some damaged. Charlemagne was long gone in December 2009 :-). Also, despite Pippin the Short is not completly wrong, the real name is more accurate as Pepin the Short.

I reverted to an older version fixing both of them.

Heracles31 (talk) 14:42, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

Ah, good catch. Thanks. The Thing Talk//Sign//Vandalize 15:26, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
Hello again. After surfing on your personnal pages (and doing some vandalism on it :-) ), I founded your userbox counting time from the moment you received your rollback privilege. I chose to copy it on my own page and I modified it as "This user has been" instead of "I". Should you not agree about me re-using your code, just tell me and I will remove it. Thanks Heracles31 (talk) 19:53, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
Oh, no that's fine, you can use it. Cheers! The Thing Talk//Sign//Vandalize 22:14, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

Vandalism on Theresienstadt concentration camp

Another one : when you restored Theresienstadt concentration camp sooner this day, you missed another vandalism done by 96.28.238.5. He removed a lot of legitimate information. I restored them. Leaving such deep vandalism behind in a revision done by a well-known editor and RCPatroler make it very difficult to find and fix. Other RCPatrolers like Acather96 and Tyw7 trust your version when doing their own cleaning. I've missed a few deep vandalism cases myself, so I know how difficult it is to catch them all... Heracles31 (talk) 20:54, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

Ah yes, Huggle didn't show me that he had vandalized the article further, although I know that's no excuse for missing that. Thanks for catching that. The Thing Talk//Sign//Vandalize 22:03, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

Name "Asad"

OK, what am I missing here--the article currently says the name is written as Asad or as....Asad. Further down, "Assad" (two esses) appears as a variant. So, as currently written, the opening of the article makes no damned sense at all, but when I correct it, you revert it as vandalism??? 68.217.100.225 (talk) 13:22, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

Sorry about that, I've reverted my edit. The Thing Talk//Sign//Vandalize 13:25, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

Please, do not revert my edits on the article about Jeff East. I honestly believe that the amount of "o's" in "whoo" must be specific to accurately convey the length and sense of the quote. 69.120.222.12 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 21:42, 29 January 2010 (UTC).

The Thinker

Hello The Thing,

Here is another one for you : http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Thinker&action=historysubmit&diff=327864449&oldid=326236176

You were not the first to miss it. Jusdafx missed it too just before you. Many good faith edits re-added a lot of the deleted site and it has been a pain to restore the list.

The article would still need cosmetic work (uniforming the list of sites) if you can help with that.

Have a great day,

Thank you

As soon as you catch one of my recovery as incomplete, I will add you to my personal success and failure log. Heracles31 (talk) 19:48, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

Tfoxworth's reincarnations

Thank you for recently intervening in the near-daily ritual of reverting the vandalisms of the ever-changing sockpuppets of permanently banned User:Tfoxworth. His persistence over several years is flagrant and worse -- an invitation to others to mimic his evasions. But I believe he can be stopped with your continued help, as suggested here. Thanks for any consideration. FactStraight (talk) 04:02, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

I use a program called Huggle to revert vandalism, which is a very fast, and powerful tool. I've been using it for close to 1 1/2 years, so I have a large amount of experience in reverting vandalism. The Thing // Talk // Contribs 03:12, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

Your Huggle edit summary

Hi there. I'm currently patrolling recent changes with Huggle, and I just noticed that when you revert you have a bit saying "(report mistake)". I like that idea, and was just wondering how you set Huggle up to put that in. Thanks! -- Lear's Fool (talk | contribs) 13:27, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

I use a custom version of Huggle compiled by User:Sidonuke, which is configured to use global and project config pages that are in my userspace. I don't have the source code for this version, and Sidonuke seems to have vanished into thin air, so I can't have a version compiled for you. Sorry... if I ever get in touch with Sidonuke again, I'll be sure to pass on your request. The Thing // Talk // Contribs 13:32, 2 February 2010 (UTC)

UAA report

Heya, I wanted to let you know that one of your reports was removed. See this diff for the reasoning. Regardless, excellent work and thank you. NJA (t/c) 19:16, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for telling me. I must point out that someone else possibly agreed with me, although they way the posted it was odd, copying my report character for character. The Thing // Talk // Contribs 19:20, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
I think what happened is the bot also reported the name and it had made an error when it was automatically merging the two reports into one. Anyhow, please note the guidance and don't hesitate to report serious name policy infringements to UAA. Cheers, NJA (t/c) 19:26, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
Advice taken. Also, the second report wasn't a bot... I reported the name first, then User:Paulmcdonald copied my report, signature and all for some reason... then the bot merged both reports, and since both reports were exactly the same, it looked as if I had reported it twice. Tfoxworth's reincarnations

I'm posting the following plea on the talk pages of some admins & editors, so please help: Please see diff. The only fix I can see is to block (even briefly, but swiftly) IPs as soon as he begins to use them, and the only way that can happen is if admins put the articles he edits (among others, Line of succession to the Russian throne, Maria Vladimirovna, Grand Duchess of Russia, Maximilian von Götzen-Itúrbide and Nugzar Bagration-Gruzinsky) on their watchlists. I realize this isn't how admins prefer to manage these vandals, but is there any other way? Waiting until each new act of vandalism is reported by other editors gives him what he wants: 1. evidence that he is succeeding at diverting Wiki editors from doing the productive article work they come here to do 2. time during which his vandalisms appear to the public as Wikipedia's legitimate voice 3. proof that he is sufficiently persistent to compel Wikipedia to allow his vandalism to stand, while that of others is reverted. FactStraight (talk) 05:06, 5 February 2010 (UTC)

Nothing personal ...

Hello The Thing,

This afternoon, I founded O4E's challenge about anti-vandalism. The challenge asks for the recovery of at least 10 different types of vandalism. I posted a list of some of the recovery I did. One of the type is sneaky vandalism, defined as cases hard to find / missed by others. I gave links to the recovery of Charlemagne and The Thinker and noted that you missed both of them. I do not want to diminish the great work you are doing and I considered the fact that an expert like you missed them as a proof that they were hard to find. I prefer to tell you instead of you finding it another way or me hoping you would not find my description.

Have a good day,

Heracles31 (talk) 22:54, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

Oh, that's alright. In fact I sometimes do a bit of stuff like this myself. About a month ago I spent nearly 4 hours looking for stray "Bold text, Italic text", stuff like that... I found a few bits of pre-existing vandalism while doing that: [1] Anyways, thanks for stopping by. Cheers! The Thing // Talk // Contribs 01:28, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

IMHO

I think this edit was more of a personal attack rather than vandalism. Sorry for interrupting anyway. Minimac's Clone 17:16, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

And what have you learned today?

'Don't bother trying to become an admin here unless you want complete strangers coming out of nowhere and shitting on you.' HalfShadow 20:53, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

  • So people should only be allowed to comment at RfA if they know the user? And it isn't "shitting on him"; virtually every oppose ran "you do brilliant work, BUT". Ironholds (talk) 23:42, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
  1. My area of editing has plenty of that in the first place.
  2. There's another thing learned... Resistance is futile.
The Thing // Talk // Contribs 20:57, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

Sadly abuse is always a risk, and one that I'm glad I didn't have to face. Some of those comments really were shameful. Thanks for trying.--otherlleft 20:59, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

Seems like it was a stressful one. Dont let it get to you down. I think your coming a long way with CSD, and AFD involvement (and unstopable with vandal hunting still ;) ). Keep at it, Good luck with your future edits. Ottawa4ever (talk) 21:01, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

The EN Wikipedia limits itself so very harshly to a tiny minority of interested and capable admin candidates. It is a weakness in the community. I am glad you contribute, and sorry the RfA was unpleasant. Happily, my contentious nature keeps me from temptation. I expect I'd bite them. Sorry to see the avalanche of "...but you fight vandals too much..." land on you. One RfA, the candidate had something like 100,000 edits... but "only" 5,000 (IIRC numbers, sorry) were manual edits. The level of whining about how they relied too much on the tools made me ... rather angry. I avoid reading RfA's unless I feel rather strongly that the candidate deserves a comment from me, good or ill.- Sinneed 21:21, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

I am very sorry TTSNB, RFA is a bitch isn't it. I think the general philosophy most voters have is entirely wrong, but it is what it is. Don't let it get you down though. Icewedge (talk) 03:21, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

Question

Could you block thos IPs for 24 hours? Those are my suitemates and they are trying to change my page as well as another. I'm not sure what they will do now, but I just don't want to hear them talk about vandalism and then go race to find it. Thanks. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 22:09, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

I'm not an admin, so I'm afraid I can be of little assistance. In any case, they haven't vandalized more than twice on the same range, so blocking would still be inappropriate. I have however issued one of them a 4im warning, and will do so for any others that vandalize the page. The Thing // Talk // Contribs 22:13, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

Are you referring to the message about my RfA? The Thing // Talk // Contribs 01:41, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
Yes. Where's the reply to the comment after "vandalism never takes a day off?" 173.25.243.248 (talk) 01:43, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
I believe that it isn't the reason, because hugglers like me are experienced... I should point out though that careless hugglers have the potential to drive away contributors. I don't consider myself careless... if I were, I'd have a lot more complaints than praise on my talk page... The Thing // Talk // Contribs 01:47, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
I understand that. What I'm also concerned about, though, is the frequency (by days) of users using Huggle. You used it every single day last month, making the percentage of frequency 100%. I've been waiting for one of Wikipedia's top vandalism reverters to not use Huggle in an entire day this month/year. So far, it's happened with User:J.delanoy, User:Alansohn and User:Tide rolls (although he has used it every day since January 26). I wonder what's going to happen to you after some months? I recorded J.delanoy's contribs from the first half of last year, and his day frequency of using Huggle was extremely high. I guess it comes to show that the longer you use Huggle, eventually the more tired you'll get from using it. What's your opinion on that? It's also clear that you know who this is now (don't shout it out!) 173.25.243.248 (talk) 01:58, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
I took all but one day of February, and about half of December off in 2009, for what it's worth. Also, you sound familiar... The Thing // Talk // Contribs 02:01, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
Yes, but your contribution records show Huggle edits on February 6. I count that as a day when you used Huggle, unfortunately. 173.25.243.248 (talk) 02:12, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
Perhaps my post was misread? I said all but one day of February... The Thing // Talk // Contribs 02:13, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
I'm still confused... You probably aren't completely clear on how I keep track of the contributions of Wikipedia's top vandal-fighters. 173.25.243.248 (talk) 02:17, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
I said that I didn't use Huggle on all but one day of February. And what you've found shows the exact same thing. The Thing // Talk // Contribs 02:19, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

UAA reports

Heya, thank you for your reports about users SexGuy6969 and Santabutthead1. However, your reports were removed as UAA is for name policy infringements that are serious enough to warrant an immediate block. Santabutthead1 is not something that would seem to fulfil these requirements. As their edits were obvious vandalism, a report to WP:AIV as a newly created vandalism only account would have been more appropriate.

As for the other name, there was a recent discussion about a name Gayguy69, where overall it wasn't seen as a blatant or serious name policy violation. If the name you reported had made a series of bad faith vandalism edits, then they also should have been reported to WP:AIV and blocked as a vandalism only account, but not for username. As noted at WP:BADNAME, names that are general name policy violations should first be discussed with the user on their talk page. Also noted there is to report accounts that are vandalising to WP:AIV. You may also find the UAA instructions helpful. Cheers, NJA (t/c) 09:03, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for stopping my to tell me. Santabutthead1 was reported well before he began editing though, so at the time UAA seemed the appropriate choice. But as the name apparently didn't warrant an immediate block, I'll be more careful about reporting in the future. Thanks again. The Thing // Talk // Contribs 17:31, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

Hello The Thing,

Your RfAs were denied because many consider you as a HuggleBot and think you are nothing more. I wish to help you, so here is my idea.

Here are 3 edits you did today that still contain vandalism.

[1]

[2]

[3]

Clean them and make it more difficult to me finding such cases and I will do my best to convince people that you are not the HuggleBot people think you are. Should I not be capable of finding 3 cases like them in your last day of work, I will consider it as enough.

Are you interested ?

Heracles31 (talk) 20:11, 12 February 2010 (UTC)

Those 3 are done. However, it's the fact that I have very little content that caused !voters to oppose me. Looking for preexisting vandalism isn't able to fix that, although in any case it's still beneficial to the Wiki. Cheers! The Thing // Talk // Contribs 22:39, 12 February 2010 (UTC)
I respect your choice. I will still tell you should I find something about your edits, but I will not concentrate my efforts on double-checking them. Hi. I hope you don't mind me pointing out that when you made this reversion, you actually only reverted one of six consecutive vandalism edits by various IPs (PS: Keep up the great anti-vandalism work) -- Boing! said Zebedee 16:08, 15 February 2010 (UTC)

I think that's a limitation of Huggle, in that it can't revert multiple edits unless they were made by the same person, and I've seen other people doing that all the time. The best way to handle a situation like that, I think, is to just find the last "good" revision and restore it manually. Soap 16:13, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
I'm not sure if Twinkle, which I use, is better - you do have to manually find the last good one and do your own diffs, but once you've done that it provides a "Restore this version" link. But as a general rule, if I see that a vandal edit immediately follows one or more other IP edits, I always look back further -- Boing! said Zebedee 16:25, 15 February 2010 (UTC)

How did you add the (Report Mistake) to your rollback edit summary? I would like one similar to it. NerdyScienceDude :) (✉ click to talkmy editssign) 14:13, 17 February 2010 (UTC)

I use a custom version of Huggle made by User:Sidonuke. However he has not edited for a few months now, and I don't have the source code, so I wouldn't be able to compile a version to use project and global config pages that would need to be created in your userspace. Sorry. The Thing // Talk // Contribs 15:42, 17 February 2010 (UTC)
My version of Huggle was simple. I no longer have the sources but I just reviewed the code again and its just a matter of redirecting the global config page to a use page.

» http://huggle.googlecode.com/svn›trunk›Config.vb Line 23: Change the "Huggle/Config" to a custom like "User:Sidonuke/GlobalConfig.js"
It's simple mods to the how it loads configuration which allows you to change many of the variables without effecting all huggle users.

Vandalism from 66.228.80.2

I just wanted to inform you, that User 66.228.80.2 has made yet more unconstructive edits to wikipedia here and here. I'm not sure what the normal procedure is in this case but given this IP's history, wouldn't it make sense to just block it permanently?--U5K0 (talk) 18:44, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) In general, IPs shouldn't be blocked permanently because they change and may impact someone else. Instead, temporary blocks are generally sufficient. Typically the damage that is done can be quickly handled and a reblock can be applied if the block expires. Thanks for pointing him out though. If the disruptive editing pattern continues he will likely be reblocked. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 18:50, 19 February 2010 (UTC)

Final discussion for Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Biographies of living people

Hello, I note that you have commented on the first phase of Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Biographies of living people

As this RFC closes, there are two proposals being considered:

  1. Proposal to Close This RfC
  2. Alternate proposal to close this RFC: we don't need a whole new layer of bureaucracy

Your opinion on this is welcome. Okip 03:30, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

Bot Question

Hello. There was some discussion about one of the edit filters, specifically Filter 18, the "test edit" tag. One of the other users thought you may [have requested]/[be running] a bot to help clean these out. Although the other user and myself have looked through WP:BRFA and have not found any record of such, the absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence. So, rather than search through it again, I'll just ask: Do you run any bots? (I assume I know the answer, since I see no mention of it anywhere here.)

Regardless - Thanks for your service! If you have any input/suggestions, please feel free to join the discussion. --Avicennasis 08:05, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

JAKAZiD

With regards to JAKAZID i have moved it to the trivia section as it is a well known fact —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.168.245.84 (talk) 17:15, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

Claims such as the one you have been adding require a source in order to be included on Wikipedia. Our Biographies of living persons policy states that negative or libelous information that is not sourced cannot be in any BLP. The Thing // Talk // Contribs 17:17, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

I understand that however how is someone being gay a negative thing? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.168.245.84 (talk) 17:19, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

Homosexuality often carries a negative stigma... Thus we don't add things like that unless they are cited by a verifiable source. The Thing // Talk // Contribs 17:23, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

To be fair tho that looks at it in a negative way, because there is nothing wrong with someone being gay & people should not be judged if they are. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.168.245.84 (talk) 17:25, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

Unfortunately a lot of people would disagree... Either way controversial claims needs to be sourced. If you can't find a source, then it does not belong on Wikipedia. The Thing // Talk // Contribs 17:29, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

Here is a link which i found: http://thehobbyscene.blogspot.com/2010/03/jakazid-is-gay.html please readd the trivia, thank you! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.168.245.84 (talk) 17:33, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

That is a blog, and blogs are not acceptable as a source. Perhaps you should read up on our sourcing policy, located here. The Thing // Talk // Contribs 17:37, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

Why are they not acceptable? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.168.245.84 (talk) 17:38, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

From the policy page I linked: "Anyone can create a website or pay to have a book published, then claim to be an expert in a certain field. For that reason self-published media, whether books, newsletters, personal websites, open wikis, blogs, Internet forum postings, tweets, etc., are largely not acceptable." The Thing // Talk // Contribs 17:40, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

Ok however anyone can make a website (blog or otherwise) so how come 'proper' websites are ok then?

Please read this, which should explain everything. The Thing // Talk // Contribs 17:46, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

Seems unlogical to me as anyone can make a website. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.168.245.84 (talk) 17:50, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

That's why self-published sources generally aren't allowed. The Thing // Talk // Contribs 17:51, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

Yes i understand that however what i meant was that it should be the same for 'non' personal websites because anyone can make one of those also. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.168.245.84 (talk) 18:01, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, I find it hard to believe that the person could be born in both 1975 and 1993, live in the White House, have a spouse supposedly from the first year they were born, and have Brad Pitt as a domestic partner, all with no sources of any kind to back up these claims. The Thing // Talk // Contribs 21:44, 15 March 2010 (UTC)

Hey, if you want to go and delete pages based on lack of citation etc, how is it your little ego parade is permitted? I think it is entirely hypocritical. You deletionist scum have ruined this site one article at a time. I want to know how is it that you think your little page of e-penis stroking is in any way relevant information in an encyclopedia.

This is a userpage that is not exactly constrained by the Verifiability and Notability requirements outlined in our policies. Also, if you are who I think you are, using an IP in this manner is considered sockpuppetry, and is a blockable offense. The Thing // Talk // Contribs 00:01, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

Who am I? give me a name, I will tell you if it is correct. However, this is not my main ip. As I have said in nerdy's page or whatever, I think your policies on this site are entirely hypocritical and frankly need to be looked at. My edit of your page is entirely my own initiative and not in any way through the proxy of an individual so the accusation of sock puppetry is merely pushing me to the side in a dismissive sweep and frankly I think you are being more than a bit close minded. So who do you think I am? How is my action here in any way sock puppetry? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.186.178.171 (talk) 00:08, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
