Wikipedia's First Golden W Award Presentation

  Golden W Award
Congratulations! You have been awarded the Golden W Award for your contributions to the Main Page: a Featured Article; articles listed on In The News, Did You Know, and On This Day; and a Featured Picture. Your contributions to Wikipedia put you in a class of prolific, highly skilled editors.

Pool D

Based off of the scores for round 2 alone, it looks like you, me, Casliber and Theleftorium are going to be battleing for first and second in our pool. May the best writer win :)--White Shadows you're breaking up 01:48, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

True. I got 610 points in round 2 but I only really needed to get 110 to move on. This round, my aim is to not blow the competition out of the water but to just move on. I can likely get 300 points by June (I've already got 170 to start things out) so I'll let the others win and save my U-boat articles for round 4 and maybe round 5 if I can get there. It's only going to get harder so I need to be able to score more in later rounds. Not wast all of my possible noms and then have nothing to work with in round 4 or 5.--White Shadows you're breaking up 02:00, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

Scarlett Johannson

Hi Tony. I hope you remember doing the GA review on this page with me. It passed and very little has changed since then. This morning, an editor (John) came in and removed sourced descriptions from the article and characterized the entire article as "I'm disappointed that the efforts I made to remove poorly attributed repetitive praise for the subject of the article have been thwarted. It makes the article read like something a teenage fan would have written, unfortunately. We need to tone this down, source every single adjective we keep, and improve the quality of the writing." I responded to him with a detailed step-by-step discussion of each thing he removed. His response was to slap a peacock template on the article and complain that I'd reverted him without acknowledging that everything in that article is thoroughly sourced and each notation of critical response was supported with references. I'm mostly upset by his putting down the quality of writing in this article and refusing to accept that every single point in the article was supported. Could you possibly take a look at Talk:Scarlett Johansson#Peacock terms and comment? There is no fluffery in the article. Adjectives are sourced. Argh. Thanks. Template:Location map United States Chicago

Hi I've made a new map of Chicago for pin. See Hyatt Regency Chicago for it in use. I'm currently sorting out the pushpin option for infobox skyscraper so hopefully soon many landmarks of Chicago wilol have city locator maps. If you would like a smaller scale map focusing on a particular part of Chicago like downtown etc please let me know and I'll be happy to upload some for you. Please help add this map to articles. Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:57, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

Where it says pushpin_map=United States Chicago. Note that not all templates are compatible with pushpin maps yet. I intend to make all building templates have this option asap as I intend making many more city locator maps. If there are any templates which pushpin_map doesn't work for let me know. I am aware of the skyscraper one which is awaiting change.. Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:21, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

The Infobox Stadium doesn't have the pushpin map option yet. I'm currently planning on merging a lot of infoboxes and standardising them. I'll see to it within a few days that a pushpin map is added. Thanks. Dr. Blofeld White cat 09:49, 6 May 2010 (UTC)

2010 East–West Shrine Game is now a GA

AGF much?

Wow. Just, wow. I'm speechless. --John (talk) 04:51, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

I got your meaningless message. Are you interested in providing actionable suggestions for the article? If not would you kindly take this somewhere that people will such as WP:GAR. Tagging the article and refusing to facilitate helpful progress does not do much.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 04:54, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
I have responded at the article's talk page. The article has now been improved by removing the breathless praise, so there the matter rests. In sending the message you claim to find "meaningless", I was alerting you to the fact that making unsubstantiated allegations about sock puppetry, tag teams etc on the admins' noticeboard to try to get your way in a content dispute (and one in which you are wrong at that) is not how we operate here. Please bear that in mind in future. Thanks. --John (talk) 05:08, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

Re:Talk:Grant Park Music Festival/GA1

Don't worry about a critical reception section then, if there is not much out there. The article is pretty broad anyway. Adabow (talk) 08:20, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

The only thing stopping the article from passing as a GA is the lack of author info on an image. If you think that you will have the required info soon, I will keep the review on hold. If not, you could either remove it from the article and I will pass it, or you could leave it in and I will fail it. Adabow (talk) 00:44, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

Barnstar

  The Special Barnstar
This barnstar is awarded to Tony for honesty. He wrote "I have stated on the talk page why this is a very bad time to be defacing the article with pejorative tags. Ms. Johansson's page is highly visible with a regular audience of 8-10K viewers per day and a ramp up in her audience is visible (http://stats.grok.se/en/201004/Scarlett_Johansson ) as the publicity for Iron Man 2, which opens on Friday" Rather than make up wikilawyering excuses for why he didn't want a tag, he was honest and gave the real reason. Honest tea and honesty is the best policy. Suomi Finland 2009 (talk) 15:08, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

Transfering to Commons

Hi Tony, I was on my way to transfer a few of your images to Commons, but stopped what I was doing when I read your comment under permission: "I release this photo for all fair uses." (see File:20070530 360 North Michigan and 35 East Wacker.JPG for instance) - You did put a free license on your uploads, did you mean to restrict it by saying that? Obviously, a free license means it can be used any which way. I don't think your comment will necessarily stop it from being transfered anyway as the license is valid, but even so, I'd thought I'd check. Thanks. Deadstar (talk) 10:12, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

Harris Theater

Hi Tony, as I wrote in the PR "I have replied above - while it looks better on a quick read, I still think it would benefit from a copyedit and could do one in the next 2 weeks or so, if you want. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 14:52, 27 April 2010 (UTC)" By my reckoning, 2 weeks is up May 11 or so, which gives me a few days and meets your mid-May deadline. I'll get to it, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 19:18, 6 May 2010 (UTC)

Just wanted to let you know that I am working on Harris Theater now - mostly reading, looking at sources for more information, and thinking where to move sentences for better organization and flow. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 16:12, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
Have you asked Darkwind to look at Grant Park Music Festival's PR again? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 18:55, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
Not sure what to say - I do not see this passing FAC without a full copyedit. I have finished the Background and construction and Architecture sections and am still copyediting - on to Performers and events next. I tried renaming the Specifications section to Architecture. Do you like that, or would Structure (or something else) be better? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:58, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

I am done with the c/e except for the lead - first 2 paragraphs are OK, but my brain is tired of c/e and I am calling it a night. I removed the description of the theater as "non-profit" as the source did not back it and the article mentions it making a profit. See edit summaries. Please check this. I also think it would be better if the lead image were focused more on the theater itself, preferably an evening / dusk shot where it is lit from within - similar to the pix on the MP and architect's web pages. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:18, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Thanks - I will go through the FAC and try and respond to anything left later today. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 11:48, 25 May 2010 (UTC)

Stephens City, Virginia

Hello, I am working on the Stephens City, Virginia page in an effort to get it to GA status. I had a user working on the history section (which was very wordy) but he has lost interest in the project. I seen by your userpage that you have a great deal of experience in good articles and featured articles. I was wondering if you would mind giving me a hand with the page. Another user, User:JonRidinger, and I asked for Peer Review and one was done, which can be seen here. User:Parkwells, the user who lost interest, was working primarily on the history section. You can see some of his work in the page history. If you wouldn't mind taking a look at the page and seeing if you could help, I would appreciate it. I really feel with a couple of minor improvements, this page is GA quality. - NeutralHomerTalk04:17, 7 May 2010 (UTC)

Hey Tony, thanks for taking a look at the page. I understand what you mean about not editing pages in places you haven't lived. That is cool. Could you recommend a good editor you know to possibly help with some editing of the history section? - NeutralHomerTalk06:07, 7 May 2010 (UTC)

Well, one of these days, I'd like to get the main Bulls article to featured status. I haven't really had the energy to take on a task of that size, but if we could get a team of editors involved, I'd definitely try to pitch in. Zagalejo^^^ 01:24, 10 May 2010 (UTC)

I'd be happy with any focused attempts to improve the Bulls article, if other people are willing to get involved. (To be honest, I don't really care about the awards or anything. I just want to see high-quality articles.) Zagalejo^^^ 16:27, 10 May 2010 (UTC)

Map

I've added a map to Gerald Ratner Athletics Center. I think I'll also make you a more central map. Dr. Blofeld White cat 09:03, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

Right, I've made three more maps. I've moved the Chicago one to Chicago Greater so we now have Template:Location map United States Chicago Greater, Template:Location map United States Chicago, Template:Location map United States Chicago Central and Template:Location map United States Chicago Millennium Park. I know the main Chicago one now cuts off the south side but it is intended to display buildings in the downtown area. The Chicago central then is for the same purpose but with more street detail and Millennium Park for that specific area of Chicago, whatever it is called. OK? Dr. Blofeld White cat 09:30, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

The Chicago Greater is used for the Athletics centre, if you see the Hyatt Regency Chicago which currently uses simply Chicago you have the option to add Central on the end for a smaller scale map. I can create another Chicago Centre map for the core if you like although I'm not sure exactly what part that centres around, you'd have to inform me. See the map in McDonald's Cycle Center. That can be used for such articles if you like, I made it especially for this purpose. Dr. Blofeld White cat 09:33, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

You'll have to sort out the alt text. Look at the infobox parameters in the template to work out how to do it. If it doesn't work then I'll look into it. Infobox skyscraper is being merged into infobox building see the talk page. No point in adding to skyscraper infobox. It is going to be merged. Dr. Blofeld White cat 13:48, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

I've suggested that a list of building infoboxes are drawn up and as many as possible are merged into infobox building and are made consistent. Unfortunately at present they are not consistent and it is irritating to keep going to add a map and finding different documentation or a non existant map. For instance the current infobox museum uses decimal coordinates. Evetnaully I hope to remove all of the infobox redunduncies and make the pushpin map parameter option the standard naming in each infobox. Infobox building, infobox stadium, infobox hotel, infobox casino, infobox museum should be OK now. Infobox theatre I'll look into, I could have sworn that I sorted that the other day. If you want maps for Chicago building best thing is to change to infobox building as it may be a few weeks before info box skyscraper is merged and deleted. You;d be best off changing as many as you can to infobox building. If you give me a list of buildings needing maps and switching to infobox building I can help you out with that. See 10 South LaSalle. Is that map really Downtown Chicago? I know Millennium Park is only a small part of it but I didn't knnow what to call it. Should I change the name to United States Chicago Downtown? If you could give me an idea of where the Downtown Core of Chicago lies I can create another map, I'd imagine though that the currenlt Millennium map is not far off this area of the city but probably not centred. Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:05, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

I've created User:TonyTheTiger/Chicago building maps. Best way is to work through them and mark it with a {Done} when the map has been added. I'll begin adding some maps shortly. Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:31, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

I've updated infobox theatre. I will replicate File:Loop Map.png and create a Chicago Loop map I think. Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:06, 14 May 2010 (UTC) I've created a Chicago loop map although I couldn't fit a tiny bit along the bottom and river at the top within it at that scale, should be OK though. See Harris Theater (Chicago, Illinois). I've renamed the Millenium Park map as "Chicago Downtown", It includes some of the modern downtown area which is outside the loop. The loop map looks good I think, Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:31, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

Perhaps you could inform your friend User:Torsodog of developments and standization in infoboxes. A pin locator within Chicago is not the same as a specific map of Millennium Park. Dr. Blofeld White cat 16:56, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

Maps

What is this about? Was there a discussion about this anywhere before it was implemented? I don't think added maps to all of these articles' infoboxes in needed at all. Coordinates are provided in all these articles and in the MP articles, another map is already provided. This is overkill. --TorsodogTalk 16:57, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

Strongly disagree with you Torsodog. A map showing locator in Chicago is nothing like the model type map of Millenium Park. A lot of people would find that a locator within Chicago is easier to see where it is. The model map is good for understanding Millenium Park but gives no indication of where it is within Chicago and relation to surrounding area not to mention it is on its side which is not apparently obvious to the casual reader. I think the pin map is much clearer for understanding location. That is pretty important in my view. Overkill it most certainly is not. Have you ever read WP:OWN? Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:03, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

This is not an WP:OWN issue. It is a matter of figuring out what is useful. He is just questioning its usefulness. My opinion is that at some scale a geographical depiction is useful for the reader to understand where the feature is. It is not clear to me which scale (now that we have 5) is most useful to the reader in which situations.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 17:08, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

DISCUSSION MOVED to Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Chicago#Template:Location_map_United_States_Chicago

OK I'll create that later. Torsodog does have a point about the loop maps being too localised and too similar to the scale map. Maybe you want to use Chicago Central then for MP. What you said about us being an encyclopedia and maps being important I agree, I see Torso does too. I'll leave MP for now and let you decide, I'll get on with some of the others which have no maps at all. Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:38, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

I'll find it and make one. I completely agree with what Ruhr said at WP:CHICAGO, these map scale variations would be 10 times more effective if we had the clickable map option that they have on french wikipedia in which you can feature one map and cllick it again and again to view different scale maps from wider Chicago to exact formation shape within MP. That would be ideal, I was the first to propose this tehcnology on here, unfortunately it will mean a lot of technical work.. Dr. Blofeld White cat 17:58, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

I've made Template:Location map United States Chicago Near North Side. Something occurred to me though. If you want I can add a Near South Side locator window in the corner File:US-IL-Chicago-CA08.GIF in the top right of the map like Template:Location map Wales Pembrokeshire etc. Up to you, this might help people understand where in Chicago it is so it sort of kills two birds in one stone. What do you think? Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:19, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

There will always be people who disagree. But believe you me if the majority were not in favor of pin maps they would not have been invtned, nor would tens of thousands of our articles feature them. The current situation is not ideal, the way forward will be importing the French technology, we will not need to worry about insets then. As for the museum infobox, yes it should be made standard, so should the US historic places infobox. They are all inconsistent and this is a major problem on wikipedia and largely the reason why I dod what I do on here. But you are an intelligent guy, just view what I've added to the museum infoboxes so far and copy the parameters. Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:08, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

No. that would be overkill. If you don't like the map don't use it or ask me to install it. Dr. Blofeld White cat 09:17, 17 May 2010 (UTC) The reason why I object is not because I am unaware that many infoboxes have two infoboxes as you had thought. I personally have no problem with two maps, in fact I recently created some regional maps of Ethiopia which now have two pin locators. The reason why I refused is because not only your friend is opposed to having any map, but another member also said that he thought "a map is a waste of page space". When these people described a single map as "overkill" believe you me then they would not like having two maps. If you can convince me that these people would be happy to have two maps then I'll do it. I haven;t the time to waste only to be reverted and have public debates over my "controversial" creations and people slag off my maps.

More productive would be for me to inquire and persist that we have that clickable mapping option. Then we would not need to worry about bloated infoboxes or possible wanted large scale maps. I'll make an effort to try to get this onto english wikipedia. I did ask the French developer but he didn't reply. Dr. Blofeld White cat 14:31, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

See here. Please comment. Dr. Blofeld White cat 15:17, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Wow, you're quick at developing these articles and placing them at FAC! Excellent work. I'll give it a thorough read later and post on the FAC page. Dr. Blofeld White cat 10:30, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi there, im sorry to inform you but i have quick failed the article once again because none of the problems i listed were changed. I stand by original evaluation. The aritlce has been quick failed not so much for the citations as those seem to be pretty well done, the main issue with the article is...

  1. Doezens of linking to pages that dont exist. Ex: Opole Philharmonic, Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa. Those are just in the opening sentence, that's enough for the article to automatically fail.
  2. The amount of links to other pages you have in general, there are way too many, theres over 50 per section.
  3. There is a tag on you page, which automatically fails the article.

Those were some of my issues with the article, once these are fixed, try renominating the article. ..:CK:.. (talk2me) 17:58, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

hello

Hello, i have a question about the Shanghai's bull article. Have you come across an article that says it's called "Shanghai's Bull". If you have can you please alert me. Theres an article I referenced that says it is being dubbed "Bund Financial Bull"...anyways just wanted to ask. i like how youve expanded the article and i am a bit interested in this sculpture. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.65.21.137 (talk) 14:53, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

Have a quick perusal of my recent edit please and check out the Wall Street Journal Source. Or if we could find something official would be great. But still I am wondering if you have a source that refers to it as specially "Shanghai's Bull"? If not then I don't think it should be named as thus since Shanghai Bull Bund Bull and Bund Financial Bull have at least been referred to in news articles. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.65.21.137 (talk) 14:58, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

i propose renaming article to "Shanghai Bull" unless you have a source that refers to it as "Shanghai's Bull" I know it's minor but important. your thoughts? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.65.21.137 (talk) 15:33, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

BP Bridge

Congrats on BP Pedestrian Bridge appearing on the Main Page, and thanks for the heads up. I was out of town and have been having computer issues, so I did not even get to see the article on the Main Page :(

Have looked through the Harris Theater FAC, but have not read everything closely. Am calling it a night and will reply there tomorrow. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:17, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

Have taken care of your revised observations (save that same one...I think the footnote should come where the issue is, not necessarily at the end of the sentence. If I move it to the end I'll have to introduce a sentence into the note explaining it. Would you prefer that?). I wish I could get more people to look at the article... ɳorɑfʈ Talk! 03:07, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

Pins

As I like you and chuckle at your persistance I've changed the pin for infobox building and infobox theatre. I just made a DC map. Check out the White House. I think it looks good. You'll have to get an adminstrator to remove the label and switch the pin icon for museums though. Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:17, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

Featured article count

Well, well, well. If it isn't my arch nemesis, TonyTheTiger [*snake rattles in the background for ominous effect*]. According to Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by featured article nominations, you and I are presently the only ones who have successfully nominated 16 articles for FA status. We'll see who gets to 17 first, won't we, Tony?

That's right; the race is on. And don't think you'll be quicker than I just because you're one of the big cats.--Pericles of AthensTalk 15:21, 28 May 2010 (UTC)

Zoomable maps

Check out this. When you click the geo globe on German wiki now it features on the open street map at different zoomable levels. If we could import this technology this would be perfect and would mean we could probably not bother with the city pins. Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:18, 28 May 2010 (UTC)

The ideal, for me would be this. See the infobox box side of the German wiki page which displays the open street map. My ideal would be to have that in every infobox but in a hide option. So say by default there is no map but it has a "Click map" option say underneath the photograph. But you click it, it would then feature the open street map zoom in and out option without having to even leave the page. It might be a strain on the servers though. We should definately import this, but once again there are limited numbers who care about maps and are willing to do so... Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:25, 28 May 2010 (UTC)

No, just look at the geohack page directly that I gave you the link for. It is on the right side neatly isn't it almost in a sort of infobox side panel. Well that's what I want on english wiki but rather than on the geohack page I want it within the infobox in the article itself, but to have it hidden by default and then a Click map option which then shows this zoomable open street map in all the infoboxes. You follow? I'm going to ask User:Egil who I think is responsible for geohack so see if he can import it to en. Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:34, 28 May 2010 (UTC)

Click here. Can you see the box on the right which allows you to zoom in on the open street map? If so what I mean is that I want that sort of zoomable box map in the article infoboxes themsevles on english wiki. Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:45, 28 May 2010 (UTC)

Seems that is the project goal here. To soon enough at a dynamic OSM zoomable option within wiki articles. This is what we want. I guess we'll have to wait but I have enquired by thhose who are running this project. Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:01, 28 May 2010 (UTC)

Will do. Doesn't look like there is much I can ask them to do. They've been planning installing OSM in wikipedia articles for over a year. As I said though it is likely to need server changes to cope with them. Hopefyully they'll implement them sooner than later. The de wiki at least shows progress is being made. WikiCup 2010 May newsletter

We are half way through round 3, with a little under a month to go. The current overall leader is   Sasata (submissions), who has 570 points. He leads pool C. Pools A, B and D are led by   Hunter Kahn (submissions),   Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) and   White Shadows (submissions) respectively. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Two of last year's final 8,   Theleftorium (submissions) and   Scorpion0422 (submissions), have dropped out of the competition, saying they would rather their place went to someone who will have more time on their hands than them next round. On a related note, a special thank you goes to   White Shadows (submissions) for his help behind the scenes once again. There is currently a problem with the poster, perhaps caused by the new skin- take a look at this discussion and see if you can help. The competition has continued to tick over well with minimal need for judge intervention, so thank you to everyone making that possible. Good luck to all! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Tony, regarding the Wesley Clark FPC, you will note that I created File:General Wesley Clark official photograph, edited.jpg. Check out his uniform; it is super–clean.
