WikiCup 2011 July newsletter

The finals are upon us; we're down to the last few. One of the eight remaining contestants will be this year's WikiCup champion! 150 was the score needed to progress to the final; just under double the 76 required to reach round 4, and more than triple the 41 required to reach round 3. Our eight finalists are:

  •   Casliber (submissions), Pool A's winner. Casliber has the highest total score in the competition, with 1528, the bulk of which is made up of 8 featured articles. He has the highest number of total featured articles (8, 1 of which was eligible for double points) and total did you knows (72) of any finalist. Casliber writes mostly on biology, including ornithology, botany and mycology.
  •   PresN (submissions), Pool B's winner and the highest scorer this round. PresN is the only finalist who has scored featured topic points, and he has gathered an impressive 330, but most of his points come from his 4 featured articles, one of which scored double. PresN writes mostly on video games and the Hugo Awards.
  •   Hurricanehink (submissions), Pool A's runner-up. Hurricanehink's points are mostly from his 30 good articles, more than any other finalist, and he is also the only finalist to score good topic points. Hurricanehink, as his name suggests, writes mostly on meteorology.
  •   Wizardman (submissions), Pool B's runner-up. Wizardman has completed 86 good article reviews, more than any other finalist, but most of his points come from his 2 featured articles. Wizardman writes mostly on American sport, especially baseball.
  •   Miyagawa (submissions), the "fastest loser" (Pool A). Miyagawa has written 3 featured lists, one of which was awarded double points, more than any other finalist, but he was awarded points mostly for his 68 did you knows. Miyagawa writes on a variety of topics, including dogs, military history and sport.
  •   Resolute (submissions), the second "fastest loser" (Pool B). Most of Resolute's points come from his 9 good articles. He writes mostly on Canadian topics, including ice hockey.
  •   Yellow Evan (submissions), who was joint third "fastest loser" (Pool A). Most of Evan's points come from his 10 good articles, and he writes mostly on meteorology.
  •   Sp33dyphil (submissions), who was joint third "fastest loser" (Pool B). Most of Phil's points come from his 9 good articles, 4 of which (more than any other finalist) were eligible for double points. He writes mostly on aeronautics.

We say goodbye to our seven other semi-finalists,   Another Believer (submissions),   Piotrus (submissions),   Grandiose (submissions),   Stone (submissions),   Eisfbnore (submissions),   Canada Hky (submissions) and   MuZemike (submissions). Everyone still in the competition at this stage has done fantastically well, and contributed greatly to Wikipedia. We're on the home straight now, and we will know our winner in two months.

In other news, preparations for next year's competition have begun with a brainstorming thread. Please, feel free to drop by and share any thoughts you have about how the competition should work next year. Sign ups are not yet open, but will be opened in due course. Watch this space. Further, there has been a discussion about the rule whereby those in the WikiCup must delcare their participation when nominating articles at featured article candidates. This has resulted in a bot being created by new featured article delegate Ucucha (talk · contribs). The bot will leave a message on FAC pages if the nominator is a participant in the WikiCup.

A reminder of the rules: any points scored after August 29 may be claimed for the final round, and please remember to update submission pages promptly. If you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Hullo Tony, congrats on your trailblazing WP:FOUR achievements. I was wondering about your suggestion at WP:TIPLINE about covering your MLK presentation; do you have any content (photos, video, text) we might be able to use/excerpt perhaps? Skomorokh 16:07, 2 September 2011 (UTC)

Danseuse etc.

I noticed your apt comments on Gingermint's talk page. A Google search did find danseuse a few times, and there once was a Wikipedia stub for danseuse that defined it as a ballerina so I created a redirect for it to ballerina. What Gingermint could be talking about eludes me, what he or she finds wrong with the Misty's article even more so. Keep up the good work! — Robert Greer (talk) 16:36, 4 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi, Jivesh Here

Hi. I was looking at Toni Braxton's 1996 singles when i noticed your contributions (music samples). Then i visited your user page and i was amazed by seeing all the work you have accomplished. I was also astounded when i saw you write exceptionally very good English. So i was wondering if you could help me by doing a copy-edit for me? Feel free to refuse. I really won't mind. Forgive me as i cannot do that. Thew article is actually a GAN. The reviewer has asked for a copy-edit. Jivesh Talk2Me 16:09, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
Can you please suggest me someone then? Jivesh Talk2Me 04:46, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
No because they take an eternity for a copy-edit and they cannot be blamed as i know they have a lot of work. Jivesh Talk2Me 10:03, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
Okay. Thanks. I will let you know. Jivesh Talk2Me 11:41, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

And yet you left me this message: If you have not found anyone yet, I will review it if you take part in my discussion. Lol. I thought it was not your real age. I am 18 but yet you know what, my dad is 43. Seriously. And i will continue with the PR. Jivesh Talk2Me 15:07, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

Jordan Kovacs

Nice work on the Kovacs article. The Detroit News published a feature on him that you may want to look at here. And another here from AnnArbor.com. Cbl62 (talk) 06:03, 9 September 2011 (UTC)

Actually, looks like lots of interest in Kovacs after the WMU game. See Michigan Daily feature here and Detroit Free Press feature here as well. Cbl62 (talk) 06:08, 9 September 2011 (UTC)
Another defensive player who appears to meet the notability standard is Brandon Herron. At some point, it would be good to collect the source material and put together an article. If you decide to do so, let me know and I'll try to pitch in. I may give it a shot later in the season if you don't. Here are a few of the sources that could be used for starters: Herron's faith takes him only so far, Talking with Walter Camp national defensive player of the week Brandon Herron, Michigan linebacker Brandon Herron named Walter Camp national defensive player of the week, Michigan LB Brandon Herron not sure what to make of his record-setting performance. hi

I was wondering if you could review the GAR re-assessment for Hard by Rihanna please (Talk:Hard (song)/GA2)? I need an editor who has no interest on the subject and has not been involved with the article. I nominated it for GAR and have also been the editor to ensure it keeps it's GA icon. So if you wouldn't mind reviewing it and deciding whether or not it should be delisted or kept, it would be much appreciated. It needs to be checked against the Wikipedia:Good article criteria and closed with the Wikipedia:Good article reassessment/guidelines If you can't, please contact me and tell me. Thank you. September 11 attacks

Back in July you did a GA review of September 11 attacks, which you failed. It was passed a couple of weeks later by another reviewer, a decision that I've challenged here. Any insights you might care to share would be very welcome. Malleus Fatuorum 03:12, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on File:Address Before a Joint Session of Congress (February 24, 2009) - Barack Obama (WhiteHouse.gov).ogv requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Interview with Wikimedia Foundation

Hi Antonio, I hope you're well. My name is Matthew and I'm one of the Storytellers working on the 2011 fundraiser for the Wikimedia Foundation. For this year's campaign, we're interviewing as many of the very active and productive Wikipedians as we can to broaden the range of appeals we run come November. I wonder if you would want to tell me more about your experiences editing and writing here? If so, I'll ask you your personal story and I'll ask you some general questions about Wikipedia. Please let me know if you're interesting by emailing mroth (at) wikimedia.org. Thanks! Matthew (WMF) 00:04, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Help with Smart Museum of Art

Hi Antonio. I'm Lori, the Wikipedian-in-Residence at The Children's Museum of Indianapolis. The GLAM community was recently contacted by staff at the Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago, as they would like some more direct assistance with improving their Wikipedia article. They were interested because of my case study with the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Because you are so active in Wikipedia and the local Chicago community specifically, I was curious if you knew of someone who might be interested in working more closely with them to improve their article. Thanks so much. LoriLee (talk) 18:27, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the reply. I already suggested that the museum staff person do just that. So that part i know. Was just curious if you were aware of individuals that this might appeal to. Thank you for your time. LoriLee (talk) 20:45, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Disappointed

I have to admit, I'm a little disappointed that you would throw all of the college basketball conference player of the year navboxes under the bus the way you did at this unrelated TfD discussion. You, as an editor who hates the fact that Ice Hockey members only use succession boxes and as someone that spends a significant amount of time on Michigan (and college) basketball articles, it's surprising to see you so readily offer these CPOY navboxes as sacrificial lambs to the TfD gods. Not only is being named the conference player of the year in a Division I conference the highest individual honor a basketball player can get on the conference level, it also garners significant press coverage and easily qualifies under GNG. And, if you visit this ongoing WP:CBBALL discussion, you will see how truly active the undertaking is to make said navboxes viable by working to eliminate the redlinks in them. I'm not here to vote stack (besides, what would I be vote stacking for?) nor am I here to say "you're wrong", I just am surprised and disappointed that you of all people would suggest {{Big Ten Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Year navbox}} as a "less notable" navbox than {{Big Ten Conference Athlete of the Year navbox}}. Jrcla2 (talk) 19:16, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

You mistook this for A Year of the Quiet Sun, perhaps?

A Year of the Quiet Sun is a Golden Lion movie. The Year of the Quiet Sun is a Nebula- and Hugo--nominated novel. --Orange Mike | Talk 23:30, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

Template:The Golden Lion 1990–2009 vs. Template:The Golden Lion

What's the rationale for replacing a more general nav list (the latter template) with a less general one? As far as I know 1990-2009 are just arbitrary dates, so I don't see any reason to truncate the template based on them. Since {{The Golden Lion}} is collapsible, space at the bottom of articles is not really an issue. rʨanaɢ (talk) 02:09, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Heath Irwin

The article Heath Irwin has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No sourcing

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Syndicated programming

Hello... first off, thanks for all the hard work. I was looking at your page-of-creations and it is impressive. FYI, though, I have had to remove one of your templates from a number of articles as we generally do not link networks to syndicated programming. Given the large number of networks and channels that carry syndicated series, it would be unworkable to tag them with templates and categories for each one. I have left the template on the original series programming. Please feel free to ask if you have questions about this. Cheers. --Ckatzchatspy 08:47, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

Re:Template:CFB Standings Entry

I already have. See: Template:2000 Mid-American Conference football standings. I've obviously done a poor job of documenting the fact that that option exists, but that's because I didn't think it would ever be needed again, as that conference's season was an aberration due to expansion and they hadn't yet balanced the divisions. Division record was the only criteria used in division the division championship that year, as explained in the footnote. I think the real question is, why would you want to apply this to the standings template? Conference record is still the primary criterion in determining the division champion. So like other situations where a tiebreaker has been used to determine the champion, just add the explanation to the "notes" situation if it ever arises. DeFaultRyan 21:10, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

Update on courses and ambassador needs

Hello, Ambassadors!

I wanted to give you one last update on where we are this term, before my role as Online Facilitator wraps up at the end of this week. Already, there are over 800 students in U.S. classes who have signed up on course pages this term. About 40 classes are active, and we're expecting that many more again once all the classes are up and running.

On a personal note, it's been a huge honor to work with so many great Wikipedians over the last 15 months. Thanks so much to everyone who jumped in and decided to give the ambassador concept a try, and double thanks those of you who were involved early on. Your ideas and insights and enthusiasm have been the foundation of the program, and they will be the keys the future of the program.

Courses looking for Online Ambassadors

Still waiting to get involved with a class this term, or ready to take on more? We have seven classes that are already active and need OA support, and eleven more that have course pages started but don't have active students yet. Please consider joining one or more of these pods!
