Welcome!
editWelcome!
Hello, Blue jays, and welcome to Wikipedia! I have noticed that you are fairly new! I hope you like the place and decide to stay. I also see that some of your recent edits show an interest in the use of images and/or photos on Wikipedia.
Did you know that ...
- ...Wikipedia has a very stringent image use policy?
- ...most images from Flickr, online news websites, and other web sources are copyrighted?
- ...Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously?
- ...freely-licensed images should be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, a central location for images where they can be used on all Wikipedia projects?
- ...we recommend that new users use our "files for upload" process - at least until you get the hang of things?
If you are stuck, and looking for help, please come to the New contributors' help page, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! Or, you can just type {{Help me}}
on your user page, and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Here are a few other good links for newcomers:

Non-free image use
editThank you for contributing to Wikipedia. We always appreciate when users upload new images. However, it appears that one or more of the images you have recently uploaded or added to a page, specifically List of Canadian flags, may fail our non-free image policy. Most often, this involves editors uploading or using a copyrighted image of a living person. For other possible reasons, please read up on our Non-free image criteria. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:22, 31 December 2016 (UTC)
YRT bus connection info for subway stations was better originally!
editI see you keep editing the bus connection for YRT in the subway station articles. The formatting was far better before as, for one thing, Viva and regular YRT buses are both operated by YRT, and so can be included in the same collapsible list. Also, the logos are linked (and include specific Viva route icons) so using the full system names is unnecessary. Your formatting particularly butchered the look of the infobox for the Don Mills station article as the logo and text overlapped the clickable "show".
And the subway station name doesn't need to be linked in the regional terminal infoboxes as it's the same article as the station--and it's pointless to link back to the same article, which doesn't work in any case! Transportfan70 (talk) 02:44, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
- @Transportfan70:While YRT and VIVA are both operated by YRT, whether they were grouped together across Wikipedia is inconsistent. I chose to keep them separate, as I think it's a useful distinction. I now see the problem with the text and "show" overlap, I'll fix that on the Don Mills article, and do let me know of any other articles where I've created a similar issue. Thanks! Blue jays (talk)
- With regards to the infoboxes for YRT terminal, the reason I had moved the lists to bus operators and not bus routes section is that Template:infobox station shows that the bus routes paramater is only supposed to be for the number of routes at the station. I decided to put the lists under operators instead. However, you're right in saying that that makes less intuitive sense, so I'm not completely sure what to do. Blue jays (talk)
- The earlier formatting (mine) matches that of the TTC connections format and thus is the most appropriate I'd say, even if only for appearance. I've started discussions at the Don Mills talk page Transportfan70 (talk) 03:30, 3 June 2018 (UTC)

An automated process has detected that when you recently edited 2018 Masters (curling), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Halifax (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

USports Draft
editCurious to hear what you think about adding an "eligibility" column to the draft table. It's unique in the CPL will give players an opportunity to return to their USports teams if not signed and can re-enter the draft. --Coppercanuck (talk) 17:57, 13 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Coppercanuck: What would the eligibility column indicate? All the players signed to developmental contracts remain eligible for their U Sports teams; maybe something to indicate if they signed a developmental contract or went unsigned? UmpireRay (talk) 18:24, 13 November 2018 (UTC)

Football Rosters
editI need to ask why the manual of style isn't updated on the WP:Footy page? Also why not show the drafted players with the note that they are not signed? (I must say it's a pain to go through the manuals to research how this should be edited to only have it wiped out) --Coppercanuck (talk) 17:48, 29 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Coppercanuck: I had edited from an earlier revision so I think that's why your edit was wiped out, and I apologize for that. However, the template you used is inconsistent with MOS:FLAG, as the flag should be accompanied by the country's name. I used Template:Fs player2 in part because it is consistent with MOS:FLAG. As for the draft picks, I'm not sure if they should be on the team pages, but that's a discussion for the section you added in Talk:Canadian_Premier_League#Adding_players_to_team_pages, where I will add my thoughts shortly. Draft:Analena Jentsch
editHey man, just wondering how I could improve Draft:Analena Jentsch so it can be a real page. Thanks! TracyFleuryFan (talk) 23:08, 7 April 2019 (UTC)
- @TracyFleuryFan: From the reviewer's comments, it seems that the issue is notability. The article does meet WP:NCURL guidelines, but it still would be helpful to add a couple more references to independent reliable sources (such as the Spiegel article you have referenced). A google search should help you find some (I found this National Post article mentioning her and her team, this 2012 article from Curling Canada, and this from CurlingZone). You could also look through her German Wikipedia page for additional info. I would also highly recommend properly formatting the citations (with the help of a template such as Template:Cite web) in this and all other articles (per Wikipedia:Citing_sources#Avoid_embedded_links). It will make the references section look cleaner and more professional. I hope that helps. UmpireRay (talk) 02:35, 8 April 2019 (UTC)

- @UmpireRay: Can I move it out of draft space it does someone else have to TracyFleuryFan 02:18, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
- @TracyFleuryFan: Normally, you can move it out of the draft space into the article space on your own. It is currently in the AfC process, but I see no reason you can't just cancel the AfC by removing the templates and moving it yourself. It seems fine to me. UmpireRay (talk) 20:21, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

editGoogle Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!
editHello,
Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.
I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!
From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.
If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.
Thank you!

edit{{2019–20 coronavirus pandemic data/Canada medical cases chart}} The source given in the template confirms 1087. --Igor Yalovecky (talk) 02:46, 21 March 2020 (UTC)
- @Igor Yalovecky: I didn't realize the source in the template had been changed, but as the citation needed template indicates, it is not a reliable one. I have added the official government source. As the federal government source isn't always up-to-date, the math from each individual province can be seen Template:2019–20 coronavirus pandemic data/Canada medical cases. UmpireRay (talk) 02:54, 21 March 2020 (UTC)
- We should not use official data because they lag behind real data. Worldometer is a good source it gives links to its sources. CBC new has about the same data while officials always behind. People, don't interested in obsolete data. --Igor Yalovecky (talk) 12:25, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
- I disagree strongly. Worldometer is not a good academic source. It simply takes its data from this Radio Canada map. Notably, this map includes probable cases in the count, which should not be used for how many confirmed cases there are. The official government sources don't actually lag behind this data, it simply differentiates between confirmed and probable cases, resulting in the worldometer data being higher not because it is more recent but because it includes probable cases in its count. UmpireRay (talk) 15:07, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

source for reduction by 6 in mb?
editDo you have a source for this edit? https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template%3A2019%E2%80%9320_coronavirus_pandemic_data%2FCanada_medical_cases&type=revision&diff=946714264&oldid=946710856
I can't find anything that says MB reduced it's covid count. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.71.96.36 (talk) 03:35, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
MB did an update today, they added one new case, but no mention of removing 6. You need to source this edit or remove it.
- As of the 20th, Manitoba reported 17 confirmed cases (http://web.archive.org/web/20200320062243/https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/2019-novel-coronavirus-infection.html) and as of the 21st, it was down to 11 (http://web.archive.org/web/20200322145656/https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/2019-novel-coronavirus-infection.html). UmpireRay (talk) 18:50, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
Oh, so that page just separated out presumptive cases from the confirmed cases which it was wrongly lumping together before that. So the table isn't correct in that 6 cases were not removed, rather somewhere above that 6 cases were wrongly added to the confirmed list. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.71.96.36 (talk) 19:00, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
- Not quite. That page just aggregates all the provincial government websites, and if you look at the history of the Government of Manitoba's website, it showed the same thing. Presumably there may have been a mistake lumping together or some confirmed results were questioned. Whatever it may be, we can't speculate or do any original research. The table as it is, accurately displays the provincial reporting WRT confirmed cases. On March 20, Manitoba reported 17 confirmed cases. On March 21, Manitoba reported 11 confirmed cases. Thus, the change in confirmed cases in March 21 was -6. The template for Italy has had to do the same thing when regions decrease their count. I have also added explanatory notes for the two instances of negative numbers to hopefully avoid this confusion. UmpireRay (talk) 19:07, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
The mb gov website is listing "probably positives" (meaning only one labratory test is complete and it returned positive), not "presumptive positives". Do results with a confirmed lab positive belong in presumptive positive category? Also, should the note say something about the presumptive total increasing at the same time as the confirmed count decreased by the same amount? Otherwise it gives the false impression there are less cases. It doesn't have to draw any conclusion, just mention that fact so people are aware. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.71.96.36 (talk) 19:34, 22 March 2020 (UTC)

editI noticed you removed the reduction (−1) from Manitoba's April 12 row.[1] How do we account for the one probable case that has been determined to be a false positive?[2] The official total number of lab-confirmed positive and probable positive cases as of April 13 is 246,[3] but adding the 4 new cases to the current total in the template yields 247. Hyandrew (talk) 21:40, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
- I did not realize the false positive as the main Manitoba site still had the count at 243 when I reverted. Thank you for bringing this up, I have corrected the Manitoba numbers. UmpireRay (talk) 22:52, 13 April 2020 (UTC)
- You're welcome. I saw the discrepancy too but assumed the bulletin had the latest info. Speaking of total counts, it'd be nice if the template could add numbers up automatically. Hyandrew (talk) 00:01, 14 April 2020 (UTC)

Help with toggle bars for medical chart
editHello, UmpireRay.
Of the folks who are updating https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:2019%E2%80%9320_coronavirus_pandemic_data/Canada_medical_cases_chart, you seem to know your stuff best. Would you be able to direct me to someplace which explains how I can fix the broken toggle switches on this chart, or provide me any other advice along these lines.
Thanks for your contributions. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JoeSchlabotnik (talk • contribs) 00:35, 2 May 2020 (UTC)
- I've fixed the toggle switches. I copied the toggle switches from another country's template, so I'm not sure how exactly it works, but it seems that the "mw-customtoggle-may-l15" also needed the "mw-customtoggle-apr-l15" parameter since the last 15 days now spans both the months of May and April. Once May 15th hits and the last 15 days are only in May, the latter can be removed. Glad I could help, and thanks for all your contributions as well. UmpireRay (talk) 01:29, 2 May 2020 (UTC)
File:OC Transpo montage.jpg
editHi! I like the montage you did for OC Transpo. I'd like to suggest a few changes, if photos are available:
- Confederation Line train: I suggest a photo of the entire train. Otherwise, the train size looks similar to the Trillium Line train, if not smaller.
- Articulated bus: I suggest a current bus. 95X is historically important, but currently decommissioned.
- Double-decker bus: I suggest a current bus. If Route 2 is applicable, I'd use a photo of that, just beneath the Trillium Line train.
- O-Train station: I suggest Bayview station, the system's sole interchange station.
I currently have a decent photo of Bayview. I could take more photos of the points above if needed. Please let me know. Take care. --LABcrabs (talk) 03:35, 12 May 2020 (UTC)
- @LABcrabs:Thanks for the compliment and suggestions. Unfortunately, we are limited to the pictures on Wikimedia Commons (and I'm not currently in Ottawa to be able to take any pictures), but if you're able to take some and add them to the commons that'd be great!
- I think the biggest limitation is the square in which that photo is positioned. Showing the whole train would make it quite small and hard to see. However, I'll tiner with some images to see if it can be fit in better.
- I chose that particular articulated bus picture because it also shows a little bit of the Transitway, which is an important part of the OC Transpo network. To be honest, I didn't even think to consider the route number. If there is a free photo of a bus on a current route at a Transitway station, it could certainly be added.
- This was the best double-decker bus photo I found on the commons. Similarly, if a photo of similar quality with a current route can be used, I'd also think it should be added, R2 would indeed be great given the current Trillium Line closure.
- I chose Tremblay not because of it's importance but because of all the pictures on the commons, this seemed to me to be the most reepresentative and high-quality representation of the O-Train station architectural style.
- Feel free to any of your photos, as that would be very helpful not only for this montage but individual station, line, and route pages. Take care as well. UmpireRay (talk) 21:39, 12 May 2020 (UTC)

COVID-19 in Canada: April 30 total deaths
editHi, me again. I'm looking at COVID-19_pandemic_in_Canada#National, specifically the "total deaths" value for April 30.
- You initially entered that as 3224 (for both the linear and log scales).
- On May 6, JoeSchlabotnik changed 3224 to 3184 for the linear scale.
- On May 7, you made the same change for the log scale.
- Then on May 11 (as part of the big update for May 11), you changed both of them back to 3224.
I'm wondering why you changed them back. (As far as I can tell, 3184 is the correct figure.)
Jmdyck (talk) 17:29, 23 May 2020 (UTC)
- @Jmdyck: I don't quite remember why I made those individual changes, but I've re-checked the official provincial government sources from that date, and it does look like 3184 was the correct number, I'll go ahead and correct them. ThanksUmpireRay (talk) 17:56, 23 May 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for making those changes. I found a couple of stragglers. Jmdyck (talk) 21:55, 28 May 2020 (UTC)

COVID
editHi. First of all, thanks for all the great work you've been doing with the updates on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COVID-19_pandemic_in_Canada#Background_and_epidemiology (Timeline of cases by province and territory). As the number of cases is on a serious increase, having these updates on daily basis (or at least once a week - every Monday or Tuesday) is extremely helpful. I have been in touch with the Public Health Agency of Canada and have made an official complaint about this data (regarding new cases for each Province/Territory) not being included on government's main COVID page (https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/2019-novel-coronavirus-infection.html) in a similar table. If you are able to do this, how come one of their staff isn't? Unbelievable. I hope they will start doing this someday soon, but for now your updates here are really helpful and truly appreciated!
Now, to the few corrections that need to be made (I would gladly help, but don't have access to the protected page):
1) For MB, it seems that data for Sep 19-Sep 28 is incorrect (possibly due to an inadvertent copy-paste). The correct data is:
- Sep 19 --- 17
- Sep 20 --- 29
- Sep 21 --- 22
- Sep 22 --- 24
- Sep 23 --- 42
- Sep 24 --- 37
- Sep 25 --- 53
- Sep 26 --- 65
- Sep 27 --- 51
- Sep 28 --- 46
2) Nunavut shows 7 for Sep 28, which should be corrected to 0.
3) The totals (at the very bottom) for each Province/Territory are up to Sep 28 (8,908 for BC; 17,749 for AB, and so on) and don't include Sep 29 and Sep 30. The correct data is: 9,138 / 18,062 / 1,913 / 2,000 / 51,710 / 74,288 / 200 / 59 / 1,088 / 274 / 15 / 5 / 0 / 13
4) In the first column, the last two days should be Sep 29 and Sep 30 (currently showing as Sep 28 and Sep 28).
5) Jul 6 --- Total for the day is 288, not 299 --- The cumulative 105,934 is correct
6) Sep 19 --- Total for the day is 1,103 and the cumulative is 143,014
7) Deaths -- Aug 10 --- 6 (not 7), cumulative 8,987 is correct
8) Recoveries -- Mar 24 --- 73 (not 72), cumulative 185 is correct
9) Recoveries -- Mar 25 --- 12 (not 11), cumulative 197 is correct
10) Recoveries -- May 14 --- 1,008 (not 1,009), cumulative 35,962 is correct
Anyway, thanks again! There are many, many people who check this table on daily basis, so your work really is for the greater good of the Canadian community. If you need any help, let me know (also, if convenient, please confirm which website you're getting the numbers from). NoWikiNoLife (talk) 11:00, 1 October 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks. I definitely agree frequent updates during this second spike is important, and I try to do it as frequently as I can but I don't always have as much time as I did in the summer and I seem to have become the only person updating.
- I've been using this CTV News article to update my own spreadsheet which I then use to update the table as often as I can. Most of the corrections you point out are correct and seem to have come about through me or someone else mis-copying it and I will edit the table accordingly, with the following two exceptions:
- 2) This table has included presumptive cases, of which 7 were announced in Nunavut on September 28. There were quite a few discrepancies earlier on between confirmed and presumptive numbers, and for consistency (and the lack of data on the history of confirmed cases), presumptive cases are included.
- 6) The sum of the columns there is 1,102.
- Thanks for pointing out the mistakes and feel free to let me know of any others here or on the template's talk page! UmpireRay (talk) 13:00, 1 October 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for correcting (or addressing) points #1 through #4 (and #6) so quickly and for providing the source website. There's no hurry on points #5 and #7 through #10 - I was just using Excel to double-check all the sums and noted these discrepancies. It's also possible that the number of deaths/recoveries in these five cases (#5 + #7-#10) are correct, however then all the cumulatives from those dates onward would have to be changed. NoWikiNoLife (talk) 14:00, 1 October 2020 (UTC)
- Here is the table with data since October 9: https://i.imgur.com/R3kEi9v.png , so you don't have to waste time collecting info on new cases (I haven't done deaths or recoveries, though). I don't have access to the Wikipedia table, otherwise I'd make updates here as well. Thanks. NoWikiNoLife (talk) 03:00, 30 October 2020 (UTC)
- @NoWikiNoLife: Thanks a lot for keeping track! I have been busy lately and unable to check Wikipedia but I just added what you posted here to the table. UmpireRay (talk) 12:25, 30 October 2020 (UTC)

The file File:2019 CPL Finals logo.png has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Unused. Between the stretching and the background lines, may not be PD-simple.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.
Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. — Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 19:20, 2 January 2023 (UTC)

Women in Red 8th Anniversary
editWomen in Red 8th Anniversary | |
In July 2015 around 15.5% of the English Wikipedia's biographies were about women. As of July 2023, 19.61% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women. That's a lot of biographies created in the effort to close the gender gap. Happy 8th Anniversary! Join us for some virtual cake and add comments or memories and please keep on editing to close the gap! |
