Wikipedia:Did you know

Hi, your addition does come across as a content issue, not a format issue. It contradicts the preceding instructions and belongs under instructions for prep builders, not for nominators. Personally I don't think it's even necessary to mention. Best, Yoninah (talk) 13:44, 1 December 2019 (UTC)

Yoninah The reason I mention it is that we had a recent argument that shorter is always preferred over longer. I'm open to any solution that keeps someone from arguing, and supporting that argument with policy written twelve years ago before we put in the 200-character limit, and thereby causing long discussions requiring consensus for each individual case. --valereee (talk) 13:48, 1 December 2019 (UTC)
Since this section is for hook writers, not prep builders, you could write something like:
* The hook should be concise. The character count (including spaces and the question mark, but not including the ... or any (pictured) should not exceed 200 characters. In general, shorter, punchy hooks are preferable to long, narrative hooks that tell the reader everything they need to know about the subject. The objective is to "hook" the reader into clicking on the article.
It seems to me this should not be changed without an RfC. Yoninah (talk) 23:53, 1 December 2019 (UTC)
Yoninah, I did ask this specific question at DYK talk. I didn't head it as an RfC, but I can ask it again and do that? --valereee (talk) 12:41, 2 December 2019 (UTC)
Yes, thanks. Yoninah (talk) 12:44, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

1886 St. Croix river log jam

Hi Valereee, I wrote about something quite American, and would like to have some more American eyes on it so I haven't left in some British (or German) nonsense (haven't lived in the US for quite a while now). I'd be happy to see if you have any comments (or better DYK hooks, I'm not good with those). Happy editing —Kusma (t·c) 11:28, 3 December 2019 (UTC)

Barnstar

Your Opinion is More Important than You Think Barnstar
For a reply you made to someone else on Wikipedia:Arbitration Committee Elections December 2019/Candidates/Discussion, but prompted me to think about its applicability to real life. Specifically,

Diverse doesn't mean half the people say toMAYto and the other half say toMAHto. It means some like fresh tomatoes, some only use canned, a couple ask for tomato juice, Isarra wants a Bloody Mary, and hopefully we end up with at least one person in the room who can describe the process of making ketchup at home from scratch.
— User:Valereee

Diversity isn't about polarizing viewpoints, but actual diversity. It's something that seems obvious, but your analogy helped me realize that. So, I'm awarding this barnstar so you know the greater impact those words had on me. Clovermoss (talk) 14:26, 7 December 2019 (UTC)

Thanks, Clovermoss! It's always great to hear that something you've said made sense to at least one other person! :D --valereee (talk) 14:48, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

Online Music Magazin

Hi Valereee, I saw that your inquiry about Online Music Magazin didn't receive a response on the reliable sources noticeboard before it was archived. It looks marginally reliable to me, considering the publication's small editorial team and use of freelancers, but I'm not knowledgeable enough about the topic to give a confident answer.

For music-related sources like this one, you might be interested in asking the editors at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Albums, since that project maintains the album sources list at Wikipedia:WikiProject Albums/Sources (WP:A/S). Hope this helps! — Newslinger talk 13:01, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

Newslinger, thanks! Well, at least it's now in the archives that someone has asked about it. Good idea re: wp albums/sources, I'll try that! --valereee (talk) 14:49, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

Comments

Hi, Thanks for all your help and reply on Wikipedia:In_the_news/Candidates#(Posted)_2019_Hyderabad_gang_rape. I find comments by Laserlegs, have similarities to a rant. What is he even saying after "Agree all you want" ? --DBigXray 11:23, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

DBigXray, I'm trying to assume good faith, but my first reaction to the statement that 'these ESL article ALWAYS have questionable grammar and require constant attention while on the main page' was that it could be perceived as bigotry. --valereee (talk) 14:47, 8 December 2019 (UTC)
Yes, I was able to understand that last part. but Agree all you want, I read articles before rushing to pile "support" on some "very important" bullshit if that's not good enough for y'all I don't know what to tell you." ?? that was some cryptic language being used there, I am not bothered to ask him what he actually meant, for fear of more such unpleasant comments, which I would rather avoid, So I asked you.--DBigXray 14:55, 8 December 2019 (UTC)
DBigXray, to me it seemed like they were making the assumption that supporters hadn't read the article but instead were supporting because of ulterior motives? Not sure. Clearly I've read the article, so I took exception to that, lol. --valereee (talk) 16:58, 8 December 2019 (UTC)
yes, looks like that's the possible explanation. Thanks for trying. regards. DBigXray 17:03, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

New Page Review newsletter December 2019

Reviewer of the Year

This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.

Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.

Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.

Thanks to them and to everyone reading this who has participated in New Page Patrol this year.

Redirect autopatrol

A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.

Source Guide Discussion

Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.

This month's refresher course

While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.

Could you change the DYK update times to a 12-hour schedule? The first December 25 just went live. Yoninah (talk) 00:22, 25 December 2019 (UTC)

Oh, drat. Maile once mentioned where the page is, and I can't find it. It's a simple edit of the numbers on that page. I'll keep looking. Yoninah (talk) 00:47, 25 December 2019 (UTC)
If you find it, ping me. I'll likely be up early, have to start cooking again at 7 Eastern. --valereee (talk) 00:49, 25 December 2019 (UTC)
Sorry, I just can't find it. Hopefully another admin will manually update at 12:00 tomorrow. Do you have time to move a prep set into the queue so we can start filling a new set? Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 00:53, 25 December 2019 (UTC)
It's not the move, it's the check I don't have time for -- I still have the last four hooks/articles of Queue 6 to check, am going to try to fit that in tomorrow before the rest of the family wakes up. --valereee (talk) 01:05, 25 December 2019 (UTC)
Thank you. Merry Christmas! Yoninah (talk) 01:10, 25 December 2019 (UTC)
Ugh, and the next one has ten articles to check, and already I can see the credits aren't in the right order which likely means at least one inexperienced prep setter, which means closer checking. I'm sorry, probably not tonight. --valereee (talk) 01:11, 25 December 2019 (UTC)

Change to DYK blurb

Can I ask why you changed my DYK blurb for Donald Mackintosh (shooter)? The reviewer and promoter didn't have any objections to it, a heads-up would have been nice before it ran on the main page. Ivar the Boneful (talk) 14:33, 27 December 2019 (UTC)

Sorry, Ivar the Boneful, I thought about posting a query at DYK talk as I was checking that set, as I usually do so before making anything that seems like a significant change, but this seemed so clearly more-correct per both the article and the sources (that he didn't win it but was posthumously awarded it) that I decided not to ping people to DYK talk on Christmas Day when I wasn't even sure whether I'd be able to get back before it ran to make what seemed like a clear improvement. It felt nitpicky to me to object to it rather than just fix it. Apparently I misread what I thought would be clear to all; what about the change did you object to? To me it seemed clearly more accurate, to the point that the original hook seemed unintentionally misleading, almost. --valereee (talk) 15:20, 27 December 2019 (UTC)

Sources needed for Days of the Year pages

You're probably not aware of this change, but Days of the Year pages now require direct sources for additions. For details see the content guideline, the WikiProject Days of the Year style guide or the edit notice on any DOY page. Almost all new additions without references are now being reverted on-sight but I've gone ahead and added one for the death of James Beard.

Please do not add new additions to these pages without direct sources as the burden to provide them is on the editor who adds or restores material to these pages.

Thank you. Toddst1 (talk) 18:08, 2 January 2020 (UTC)

Observations

Hi, valereee. I noticed that you encountered some opposition at WP:ERRORS, and I just wanted to drop by to tell you that, as I see it, you did everything perfectly right. You temporarily added a compromise image so the DYK section wouldn't look so... uh... naked without a picture while the discussion was ongoing, you offered up an alternative compromise for people to peruse, and ultimately restored the original image when you determined that there was consensus to do so. Thank you for this, and all of your thoughtful and conscientious work on DYK. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 07:31, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

Mandarax, thanks! I felt like it was a reasonable progression, too. I think the objection to the compromise image was simply that once there was some image there, people might stop discussing or find the issue less urgent, but I didn't want to just revert without figuring out what was going on, as the editor who removed the image is a respected contributor and I don't think they'd have removed it for no reason. --valereee (talk) 12:12, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
And, if the image license issue is resolved, we may have to go through this all over again with the full frontal (and rear) nudity in this nom! MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 23:06, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
Mandarax, lol...let's hope no one objects to that! But there's an upcoming PotD that likely will have some discussion. --valereee (talk) 12:15, 19 January 2020 (UTC)

Ohio Wikimedians User Group: January 2020 newsletter

Upcoming and Ongoing Events

  • Cleveland Museum of Art Open Access Anniversary Campaign — January 23rd (today!) is the one-year anniversary of the Cleveland Museum of Art's Open Access program. To celebrate, we are hosting an editing campaign (with postcard souvenirs!) from now through February 9. Help expand and create articles related to the Cleveland Museum of Art (including artists and artworks featured in their collection), and receive a postcard from the Museum. If you'd like to participate, check out the task list and sign up on the event page.

Recent Events

  • In December, the Cincinnati Art Museum hosted an Art+Feminism edit-a-thon. The museum was an excellent place to have an edit-a-thon, with a café and staff who were helpful in setting up and ensuring there were enough tables, outlets, and plenty of resource materials available. There was a related exhibit, Women Breaking Boundaries, that was of interest to attendees. In total, 9 people attended.

Movement Strategy

  • The Movement Strategy document, with 13 recommendations, has been released and is located here. You may utilize each recommendation's respective talk page to leave any feedback you might have.
    • Between February and March 2020, the recommendations will be finalized, incorporating final feedback. By the end of March 2020, the recommendations are slated to be approved by the Wikimedia Foundation's Board of Trustees.
  • Kevin (SuperHamster) will be attending Wikimedia Summit 2020 on behalf of the Ohio Wikimedians. This year's Summit will be focusing on discussing the implementation of the finalized Movement Strategy recommendations. Please get in touch with Kevin if you have ideas and suggestions that you would like conveyed.

Have something for the next newsletter? Add it to our February 2020 draft.
