Administrative geography of Swansea

You have edited a number of articles on places in and around Swansea, changing the location from "in the City and County of Swansea" (or similar) to "in the county of Swansea". I do not believe that there is a legal entity called the "county of Swansea". As the article on the City and County of Swansea states, in 1996, another local government reform saw the City of Swansea merged with parts of the Lliw Valley district to form a unitary authority under the name of the 'City and County of Swansea'. Consistent statistical comparisons between Swansea and Cardiff

I have noticed a number of your edits of the Swansea article drawing comparison between the relative populations of Swansea and Cardiff, as they may be variously defined (cities, unitary authorities, wider urban areas). Please note that it is good statistical practice to make comparisons on the basis of consistent data, collected or estimated in a comparable way, at a similar time, and referring to equivalent geographical units. I believe that you are mixing up data from different years referring to different geographical areas. For example, please do not compare a 2006 estimate for a unitary authority with Census 2001 data on a city - that is not a 'like for like' comparison, and is misleading. Here is a list of appropriate comparisons with the data sources. You can check the sources yourself -

I believe this is relevant under the heading of local media which is where I put it. Only 50mph permanent motorway speed limit on motorway

Swansea Urban Area

Please note that there is nothing unique or unusual about the geographical 'spread' of the Swansea Urban Area. ONS notes that "urban areas are interspersed with non-urban areas, appearing as holes in the wider urban area" (p.48 [4]). A cursory glance at map 3.2 in this document is illustrative - for example, look at the West Yorkshire Urban Area, Greater Manchester Urban Area or Nottingham Urban Area.

To define an urban area, ONS uses a consistent methodology based on contiguous areas with a minimum population density and number of people. Continuous urban development along narrow corridors in the Swansea Valley, Llansamlet/Birchgrove/Skewen & Briton Ferry/Baglan link Swansea to Pontardawe/Clydach, Neath and Port Talbot respectively, creating a single urban area. This is apparent from the map.

BTW I do not think that the touchstone of every article on Swansea should be a comparison with Cardiff. This is irrelevant, arbitrary (you could choose any of the 25 major urban areas) and gives undue weight to the city chosen as a comparator. Other articles in this category do not include similar text. Besides, comparisons are already available in List of conurbations in the United Kingdom. I thought it was worth mentioning Newport and i have put the junction down showing the connection use to exist (or it still does but as a freight line as that part hast not been upgraded yet). I'm also not use to working with BS7-2. Simply south (talk) 21:01, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

Heart of Wales Line

Hiya dude. Thanks for you efforts on transport related articles. Just want to clear up any confusion about the Heart of Wales Line route. Nobody is saying the physical line starts in Swansea. The line starts just east of Llanelli railway station in Carmarthenshire. However, the physical line does pass though the Swansea local authority area and has a halt at Pontarddulais, after which the line re-enters Carmarthenshire again. This can be seen clearly on a local authority map of Wales. I see somebody else has amended it already. WelshBloke (talk) 11:21, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Promotion of Cardiff in the Bridgend article

I was undoing an IP's unnecessary change, which disrupted an entirely unrelated article for the sole purpose of promoting Cardiff by adding peacock terms. Re: the status of Cardiff as a 'major city', this is depends on your definition of a major city, which is entirely subjective. Cardiff is the capital of Wales and one of the top 20 settlements in the UK, but it is not in the top 10. In 2006 the Assembly Government Economy Advisory Panel produced a report on Economic Futures for Wales noted that "Cardiff could either move into the top tier of UK regional capitals, or play a secondary role to Bristol."[5]

Bay Pointe

Just in case you don't watch my talk page... For the record, I don't care either way about the height of Bay Pointe - but please note that the granting of planning permission does not necessarily imply a start of construction. A significant period often elapses between the two; sometimes developments with planning consent are not actually built!

Actually if I had seen the Madeline McCann stuff, I would have gone straight to a uw 4. Now that I look at it again, the IP is static enough. I reverted the completion date to not before 2014 as the reference stated "The project should be completed between 2014 and 2016" ie it follows that between 2014 and 2016 is not before 2014, which is what I wrote. Also the BBC report suggests that with current housing market downturn then this project will not complete. Canol (talk) 03:09, 26 March 2008 (UTC)

Olympic venue
