Ways to improve 2019 WNBA Draft

edit

Hi, I'm Bennv3771. Wnbafan11, thanks for creating 2019 WNBA Draft!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. The "Draft lottery" and "Draft" sections also need to be referenced. Do also have a look at MOS:CAPS for when capitalization should and should not be used. Thanks for your work on WNBA articles.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse.

WNBA Cares Community Assist Award moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, WNBA Cares Community Assist Award, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). WNBA Roster Updates

edit

With the roster deadline being tonight at 5 PM, just wanted to let you know that there is a page that I use to keep track of the last time the roster templates were updated. That page is here. Didn't know if you were planning on updating some tonight. I assume we will switch over to the templates since they can be displayed on the main team page (e.g. Minnesota Lynx) and the season page (e.g. 2021 Minnesota Lynx season). I also use that page to keep track of players that are active that need articles. Figured I'd mention it to you since you seem to be active in editing WNBA stuff. Thanks!

Swimmer33 (talk) 15:08, 13 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

I'm not the best at finding things either, but generally when I leave a message on someone's talk page I'll watch that page so you can just reply here, and I'll see the notification. You can also ping someone by using @Wnbafan11: and they will get a notification. Also, to sign messages on talk pages, you use four ~ symbols and it will generate a time stamp and a signature. I'm happy to help out, there is certainly a lot of WNBA stuff that needs work!
Swimmer33 (talk) 17:18, 14 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Something I just found out and figured I'd share. The current roster templates automatically update from the roster templates. The only issue with this is often, the current roster template will end up on players pages that are no longer on the roster. I discovered an easy way to fix that. If you go to the current roster and click on the "Check completeness of transclusions" link at the bottom it will run a report. The first column of the report is Transclusion but no link, which means the template is on a page, but the template doesn't link to that page. That is an example of a player who used to be on the team but is no longer and the player's page probably needs to be updated. The second column is link but no transclusion, which means there is a page/player that the template links to but the template isn't on their page. So that's a situation where the template needs to be added to the player page. The column should also include all the teams and both conferences since those link at the bottom and the current roster template doesn't need to be on those pages. I'm starting at the top and going through and cleaning up player pages. Swimmer33 (talk) 15:29, 20 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of DiJonai Carrington

edit

The article DiJonai Carrington has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Does not meet WP:GNG, WP:NBASKET, or WP:COLLATH.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Onel5969 TT me 15:17, 29 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure why DiJonai Carrington was proposed for deletion. Per WP:NBASKET, players who have appeared in the Women's National Basketball Association meet WP:NBASKET. Carrington has played in the WNBA per her profile. Therefore, she meets WP:NBASKET and the page should not be deleted. I tried to look for a deletion discussion, but couldn't find one. If you could direct me to such a discussion, I would appreciate it. Swimmer33 (talk) 17:30, 29 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Swimmer33: Passing WP:NBASKET does not automatically make a person notable, rather it means that the subject is likely to have the significant coverage needed to pass WP:GNG. Like their NBA counterpart, most WNBA players usually pass WP:GNG with ease. That is the case with Carrington, as there is ample coverage on her available on the internet, something that a simple and short WP:BEFORE would have shown. I added a few sources and deproded the article. A good rule of thumb is to add at least WP:THREE significant sources to an article instead of just links to statistical database websites to minimize the chance of it being nominated for deletation. Yeah no problem! Will definitely let you have the Pac-12 teams There is a good chance that I will be gone during tomorrow's games too - so you might be able to all the games then too. Thanks. I appreciate working with someone as dedicated as you are to making this page and other college WBB pages look great. I was wondering if I may assist with the 2nd Final Four game on 4/1 now that Stanford has made it to that game? For example, I could assist with filling out the bracket section and you could get the first crack at updating the game summaries or something like that. Please could you respond when you have time. WNBA Player Pages

edit

I saw you updated the list of players who need a page for WNBA, which is great! I'm happy someone is more on top of it than I am.  :) I think they need to play a game before they get a page though, not just make a roster. I'm sure you could get some approved before they make a game, but it might be safe to wait until they play to make sure they meet WP:GNG. It doesn't seem like WNBA is covered much under WP:ATHLETE, it just says selected in the first two rounds in the NBA draft in WP:NBASKET. Swimmer33 (talk) 12:15, 10 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Ahh that's true! I kinda forgot about that. I just updated and didn't want anyone to make a page for someone who didn't make the roster. Thanks for the reminder and help! Wnbafan11 (talk) 18:28, 10 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
No problem. Just trying to prevent some discouragement down the line from pages not getting approved. I do a bit of work with college sports and the standards seem to be applied a bit randomly sometimes, and it can be frustrating. Swimmer33 (talk) 13:32, 11 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

WNBA Historic Season Pages

edit

One thing that has been on my to do list for a long time has been to go back and improve historic WNBA season pages. So I've added to the season page table here in a way that thought might be helpful to show what needs to be done. Although after starting on it, I'm not sure sure its helpful. haha. Let me know what you think and I'd appreciate any help you are willing to give! I was thinking maybe just deleting the years that are totally done to keep it simple, or maybe just making a list instead of a table. Swimmer33 (talk) 14:28, 25 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

I actually don't mind the idea. It's going to be a bigger project and I'm more than willing to help out! Could be potentially an offseason project too. I'll look more at it later, but I will help! Wnbafan11 (talk) 00:43, 2 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
Its going to be a very large project. I've started going through some team pages to look at what is missing and I've added a list. Some pages might not take much time, just stats are missing or just a little formatting clean up is needed, but some pages totally don't exist or need complete reformatting. I'm not sure it will ever really get done, but it doesn't hurt to sit on the to do list.  :) Swimmer33 (talk) 13:44, 2 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
The other thing I'm struggling with is if it even needs to be done really. For example, if I look back at random NBA, or NFL, or MLB pages that are historic, sometimes their formatting doesn't match or large portions are missing. It would be nice if the WNBA pages were in better shape going back, but if other major sports aren't in that shape, does it matter that much? Swimmer33 (talk) 13:54, 2 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
I'm with you. I like using wiki as a place to find quick facts about things and so having at least the basics of rosters, schedules, awards, transactions, are enough for me to want to have in there. I have started a little bit with the 2013 Atlanta Dream season one to just get a sense of how much work needs to be done. Take a look and let me know. The only thing that I need to fix so far is the roster, but I'm trying to figure out how to do a historical one and I think I figure out how - just have to do it. Wnbafan11 (talk) 02:13, 6 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
I think that looks great! The only tricky part is the color scheme. I'm not sure if there is a way around that though since the schedule uses a template. For the rosters, you can look at the 2018 season as an example of how to code it in. I guess you can also just use the same players as those that are show in the stats if you can't find a historical roster. Feel free to just delete the line from the to do list when you are done! Swimmer33 (talk) 15:16, 6 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
So I've been a little busy trying to work on them. I think I've done all the Atlanta Dream pages from 2008-2022. They should all match style and formatting and I went and figure out how to make the colors correct for the years they were different. I would love another set of eyes to just scan them to see what you think. Toughest thing was finding all the sources that I could haha
I didn't type out a lot of work information for like the intro paragraph at the top. I just did the basic information. Wnbafan11 (talk) 01:52, 7 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
I noticed that the Aces changed color schemes this year so the template got updated. How did you find the historic colors that were used? Swimmer33 (talk)
I think when I did Atlanta, that I had to go back and find when they updated the main article page, which was a lot of work. Then I had to find the right coding for it. I went to the Aces page and found the last edit involving the team colors and it was this: | colors = Red, black, gold, silver[1]

I'm not sure how helpful that was or how easy it is lol

That helps a bit, and what I figured I might have to do, but was hoping for an easier way. I guess all the Aces historical pages need to be fixed now. :/ I was probably going to start on some of those historic pages now that I'm almost done with a women's college soccer project. NBA and WNBA stats

edit

Hello @Wnbafan11. I have noticed that you make many edits to WNBA-related articles, including adding and/or updating career statistics to player articles. There are an abundance of NBA player pages that are completely void of stat tables detailing their NBA stats.

I was reaching out because, if you happen to be interested in generating stat tables in articles without such, then I assembled this list of WNBA player pages without stats tables. As well, this list is an equivalent for NBA, ABA, and BAA pages. I have a goal of the English Wikipedia having stat tables for all such player articles, and if that is something you are interested in helping out with, while removing entries from these two lists as you post their respective stats (no pressure, of course), that would be highly appreciated.

Thank you, and feel free to contact me, help with the lists, or give feedback at any time. Mungo Kitsch (talk) 04:06, 11 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello @Mungo Kitsch, Thanks for noticing that I'm trying to update and clean up some of the WNBA articles. Trying to help give the W and our women athletes some of the props and basics they deserve.
I am certainly willing to help out with the WNBA player stat pages. I'll take a look and start doing some when I can. Thanks for reaching out! Wnbafan11 (talk) 14:13, 12 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

PROD removal

Hello, I noticed your removal of a PROD tag I placed on 2023–24 South Dakota State Jackrabbits women's basketball team, with no improvement to sourcing or edit summary. Could you please explain your reasoning behind this? JML1148 (talk | contribs) 01:34, 17 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

WNBA Commissioner's Cup

edit

Heya @Wnbafan11. I was noticing that you typically create the WNBA Commissioner's Cup pages, but I wanted to share a sort of adopted format I threw together in my sandbox that provides some additional detail on the Cup play games and live standings. Mostly crafted something because there is no page currently for the on-going Cup play, but I acknowledge you have formatted the prior years pages as more of a championship game that is based on regular season play, not as an in-season tournament.

Let me know your thoughts, and if you have any feedback. The big change, besides a different infobox pending the actual cup game, is the standing tables. I would be happy to go back and provide similar standings tables in the prior year Cup pages as well for 2024 if you think it's worth it. --Lloyd318 (talk) 02:28, 7 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I haven't been on for a bit, but I just saw this. I love the format you used. I didn't know how/what I wanted it to look like when the league started doing it, but think what you did looks great!Wnbafan11 (talk) 01:20, 19 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
