Fix a lint error in a user's signature
Per User talk:Milonica#Signature HTML bug and User talk:DMacks#Signature fix., the following change would clear a bunch of lint high-priority errors (Special:LintErrors/pwrap-bug-workaround). From:
<small style="white-space:nowrap;border:1px solid #660066;padding:1px;">[[User:Milonica
to:

Probably needs to be done against a database dump. I don't have access to AWB, so I'm not sure if this is the right tool for this fix, feel free to tell me where to go if not... DMacks (talk) 05:37, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

Looking to clean up Wikipedia:Database reports/Polluted categories
Wikipedia:Database reports/Polluted categories is created weekly with categories that are mainspace categories, but have user pages in them as well. In general, what I would like to be able to do is to select all 1000 categories from that page, go into each of those categories and select all user pages. (Once I get that, changing [[Category: to [[:Category: is easy<. I appreciate that this won't clean all of the categories (some have categories created by templates), but it would certainly give me a good start. Any idea how I can use the Polluted Categories page to generate that list for AWB?Naraht (talk) 11:18, 9 September 2017 (UTC)

[citation needed]
One occasionally finds a manually added version of {{fact}} in articles; I just replaced one with the template. Is there a chance that someone could run through a database dump and replace this precise code with {{fact}}, either with or without a |date=October 2017
parameter? I'm having trouble finding them with an ordinary search, because "intitle:[citation needed]" finds lots of pages with {{citation needed}} and ignores the brackets and <> characters that are essential to this manual representation of the template. This particular instance was added a year and a half ago, so I doubt that the [citation needed] is the subject of any ongoing maintenance project. Nyttend (talk) 00:47, 3 October 2017 (UTC)

Tagging categories (10)
While manually tagging the categories listed in this discussion I made a nasty mistake, as I forgot to put "BC" in the tags.
For example, the first one, on the category page Category:1040s_BC_births the tag says to merge to Category:11th-century births while it should be Category:11th-century BC births. So in the script, "target=11th-century births" should be changed to "target=11th-century BC births".
Generalized across all listed categories "century" should be replaced by "century BC". Is it relatively easy to correct this for all listed categories with AWB and if so, would someone be willing to do this? Marcocapelle (talk) 07:59, 15 October 2017 (UTC)

fully accredited -> accredited
About 600 articles (mostly schools, some hospitals) claim that an entity is fully accredited by its relevant regulatory agency. I'm proposing "fully" be semi-automatically removed from these phrases except when part of a quotation or when doing so changes the meaning of the sentence. Furrykiller (talk) 01:22, 22 October 2017 (UTC)
Comma before Jr. and Sr.
Per WP:JR, several of us have been removing commas before Jr. and Sr., moving articles where appropriate, etc. We're at the point where more than 90% of articles in any top 500 search are fixed, but that still leaves hundreds, or perhaps thousands, in the long tail of less popular articles to work on. There are a lot of subtleties here, like whether or not to have a comma after Jr. or Sr., and a few articles to not mess with for various reasons. I don't have a clear idea how much of this AWB can take on, but would love to engage in a dialog with someone who wants to help. Dicklyon (talk) 05:34, 13 October 2017 (UTC)
- Please feel free to move my comment elsewhere if there is an existing discussion on this topic. Tricky! I looked at just one example, Neil Brown Jr., who has several links via Neil Brown, Jr.. Even his own website is inconsistent, with a comma in the archived version but the current version being a redirect to IMDB which has no comma. First we need a definitive note of how to refer to each subject, and I would say that step one is to move every article to the right title. That's an improvement in its own right and should make it easier to fix references to one person at a time with AWB or similar. Where appropriate, redirects such as Neil Brown, Jr. could be classified as {{R from misspelling}} so they show up in Wikipedia:Database reports/Linked misspellings. The comma after
Jr.
is more of a problem. (I call this a "wikicomma" because it is a peculiarity of MOS rarely seen outside Wikipedia.) As you've already worked out,Doe, Jr., died.
needs the wikicomma removed butDoe, Jr., like Doe, Sr., died.
doesn't. Any rules would be complex and have exceptions, so that's probably one for the human eye. Certes (talk) 11:14, 13 October 2017 (UTC)- Right, there's a lot that can be done automatically, like the moves, but also a lot of exceptions, or cases that need to be looked at. Does AWB provide an easy way to get a human into the loop doing yes/no on proposed edits? Something like that is what we need, I think. Not sure what you mean by wikicomma; what about this in our MOS is unusual compared to outside grammar and style guides and practice? Or are you just noting that it's common to drop the matching comma after when there's a comma before? That common error is one of the main motivations for the change of recommended style in guides over the last four decades. But yes, in your examples, some commas go and some stay:
Doe Jr. died.
butDoe Jr., like Doe Sr., died.
If we just take out commas before, we'll change some errors to correct, and some correct to errors: e.g.Doe, Jr. died.
is corrected toDoe Jr. died.
andDoe, Jr., like Doe, Sr., died.
is good asDoe Jr., like Doe Sr., died.
, butDoe, Jr., died.
is made wrong asDoe Jr., died.
Most likely, we'd do more good than harm (because, as you note, the balancing commas are already pretty commonly missing), but there are a lot of all these, and a way to get eyes on them without as much manual work is what I'm looking for. Dicklyon (talk) 23:41, 13 October 2017 (UTC) - There are also those cases where the comma after is needed, and missing, independent of the comma before. It's like the editor felt that the comma before was enough, in things like
Doe, Jr. like Doe, Sr. died.
Here's one I fixed recently. Dicklyon (talk) 00:01, 14 October 2017 (UTC) - I went through and removed the commas from pages that linked through the Neil Brown, Jr. redirect, and in no case (unless I've missed one) did I need to add or remove a comma after. So I'd just automate that, and maybe collect a list for humans to check. If AWB can run a fancy parser, like in a grammar checker, it might be able to filter down to suspicious cases. I have no idea what it can do. Dicklyon (talk) 00:20, 14 October 2017 (UTC)
- AWB (and JWB, which I use instead) can parse using regular expressions. They do present the proposed edits to a human for checking. (Fully automated editing would need a bot instead.) You'll probably need an admin to do the page moves, because many of the new titles will be occupied by redirects with multiple versions.
- I agree with all your examples above, including the matching parenthetical commas around "like Doe Sr.". By "wikicomma" I meant the second comma in
Doe, Jr., died
in the unusual case where we do want to write "Doe, Jr." with a comma. MOS requires it, so it will stay. Certes (talk) 00:57, 14 October 2017 (UTC)- Right, but MOS requires it because all grammar guides require it. As we worked down into the depths of page rankings, we've found fewer and fewer that have redirects, so most of the moves have become very easy; perhaps 90%. When we started, with more popular articles, it was more like 50%, there being lots more redirects there. Anyway, doesn't need an admin, just someone with pagemover bit. Thanks for discussing. Let me know if you'd like to help. Is JWB something I could run without getting a Windows machine? Looks like it; maybe I'll try. Dicklyon (talk) 03:20, 14 October 2017 (UTC)
- I'm happy to help. The main input I'd need is a link to a list of the next Jrs and Srs to process.
- JWB should work on any modern browser and operating system. I use it in Firefox on Ubuntu. I've heard that AWB works well in wine if that helps. You'd need to register before using AWB or JWB. Certes (talk) 09:40, 14 October 2017 (UTC)
- I applied for and received approval already. I have a list of about 300 titles I can send you (email, or put on a user subpage, or whatever). But I'd like to see if JWB can help in digging up more articles that need fixes; there will be many thousands that could use edits, in addition to the hundreds or perhaps thousands of moves. As I said, this is pretty much all in the long tail. It's relatively rare to encounter any of these excess commas in articles on anyone you're likely to have heard of. Dicklyon (talk) 03:45, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
- Here's my current list: User:Dicklyon/JrSrMoves, culled from the first 10,000 hits on searching for articles that contain both "Jr" and "Sr". The top 5000 only had about 50 (1%), but going deeper I found 3%. Going deeper still there will probably be plenty more. Dicklyon (talk) 03:57, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
- Right, but MOS requires it because all grammar guides require it. I just ran a database scan on the 2 Oct 2017 dump and found 2002 pages ending in , [JS]r\.?$
. I've uploaded the list to User:Tom.Reding/JrSrMoves, borrowing the whitelist from User:Dicklyon/JrSrMoves. I'm running another scan now for pages with , [JS]r[$\b\s\.]
anywhere in their name and will update my page accordingly and put the new pages in a separate section.
There is no automatic way (that I know of) with AWB to move pages. Perhaps there are administrator tools to do so? For now, though, it looks like they need to be moved manually (leaving a redirect, of course). ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅dgaf) 13:46, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
- A manual move isn't wise for that many pages. There are bots that can handle moves, so a request should be made at WP:Bot requests. Nihlus 14:32, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
- I was making a similar list in User:Certes/JrSr/titles at the same time. Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/User_manual#Start says AWB offers page moving for admins only. I've not seen that feature in JWB, but then I'm not an admin. I agree that, with thousands rather than hundreds of pages to move, we should make a bot request. Certes (talk) 14:39, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
Just noticed this Tom.Reding contribution. I've updated User:Certes/JrSr/titles and took care of most of the unusual cases manually, and expanded the whitelist there a bit. Let's see if we can merge these efforts. Thanks so much for the help, all! Dicklyon (talk) 17:37, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
I see now why all the ones with ", Jr" and missing dot are redirects: Tom.Reding just moved them. This would be a good set on which to try some semi-automated cleanup edits before we do too much more moving. Dicklyon (talk) 17:44, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
I've been working on the ones at User:Certes/JrSr/titles with bluelink targets; either they're done already, or can be moved, or need admin help, so I've removing done ones (like the 47 that Certes moved already), and moved what I could, and listed others at WP:RMTR. Still more of the later to do. Dicklyon (talk) 03:23, 17 October 2017 (UTC)
Admin help wanted
Is there an admin AWB user willing to help here? I see that Certes has moved dozens, and Tom.Reding has edited hundreds, but for this to scale we probably need an automated move capability, or at least a semi-automated easy way to use AWB to move. If that's not going to happen, I'll try to use Tom's contribs as a guide for where corresponding moves are needed to catch up with his edits, and do a few dozen per day manually. Dicklyon (talk) 02:32, 17 October 2017 (UTC)
- Dicklyon, Certes, do you think that the whitelist at User:Certes/JrSr/titles is more or less complete, i.e. no more than 5 missed exceptions might exist in the non-whitelist of ~1700 (~0.3%)? If/when so, let me know here and I'll make a WP:BotReq. ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅dgaf) 05:13, 17 October 2017 (UTC)

I went ahead and moved four of those and took them out of the whitelist, as they are characters often described without the commas. The film and play titles I left. Bulk edit
Thanks for organising the bulk move. It's a lot easier now that we can also fix other Jrs on the page without pausing to move them manually. I've edited the pages which turned into redirects and the ones I moved myself. It's still a massive task with a lot of intricate checks to make. Each name can have dozens of pages with multiple links, so fixing 10 names a day as a background task seems reasonable - 6 months' work. Particular gotchas:
- John Q. Doe, Jr. redirects to John Doe Jr. but John Q. Doe Jr. without the comma doesn't; similarly with missing accents etc.
- File:John Doe, Jr. is an image, and removing the comma would make it vanish
- Links are piped as [[John Doe, Jr.|Doe]] and someone may get upset about trivial edits with no effect on the page's appearance
Is this a good time to try to move the job into the Typos list? Certes (talk) 22:13, 30 October 2017 (UTC)
- I've started working on the name-list again; 1-2 hundred per day. If you find any exceptions please update the whitelist (I've hard-coded to avoid them).
- I'm not sure about adding this issue to the typos list. It will be difficult to isolate all proper names for institutes, libraries, buildings, etc. that require the comma. I would like to see it, however, since an insource search for
, [JS]r[\s\.,']
returns ~138,000 pages. ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅dgaf) 13:18, 3 November 2017 (UTC)- Thank you! I'm a bit busy elsewhere at the moment but will join you when I can. Certes (talk) 16:51, 3 November 2017 (UTC)
- Done correcting all of the pages at User:Certes/JrSr/titles. The regex pattern I'm using is embarrassingly long, no doubt wastes many compute cycles, and proper-noun false positives still crop up. I don't see this being easily & robustly added to the typos list. I do have a personal genfixes list though, to which I've added my efforts here, and will always know where to look if I ever want to find something to do... ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅dgaf) 03:45, 8 November 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks very much, Tom. That's a lot faster than I could have managed. I've tidied up the exceptions that should have a comma and didn't.
- Have we missed any? For example, Connecticut's 143rd assembly district still links to (and displays) Yorke Allen, Jr.. I can have a look for similar cases and fix them manually but perhaps you have a better tool for the job. Certes (talk) 12:29, 8 November 2017 (UTC)
- Well, as far as the scope of this task request, all the page titles are fixed (unless a new
,
-page was created since the last database scan). However, there're still ~138k pages containing, [JS]r[\s\.,']
in their body. This is low priority for me, at least for now, but if I happen to land on one of those 138k for a CS1 error or formatting reason, the errant commas will be fixed as well. ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅dgaf) 13:49, 8 November 2017 (UTC)- Ah, that explains it. My process was fixing all 138k pages, which was slow and tedious as well as potentially disruptive. I'll also let it rest but fix any I stumble across in other work. non-breaking spaces
I've stumbled across a few instances of failed non-breaking spaces in articles, and searching suggests that there are quite a lot more. The most common errors seem to be:
& nbsp;
(i.e. a space between the ampersand and nbsp) :
(i.e. a colon rather than a semicolon)
There are a few more, but a quick look suggests they are not as numerous and so the above two will be good for starters,
Almost all of these are going to be errors that should be corrected to
but there may be some exceptions. It is possibly worth adding this an ongoing general fix.
Probably most of those instances where the non-breaking space separates numbers from a unit this should be replaced with a {{convert}} template, but that is a separate job and not one that I think AWB is suitable for. Thryduulf (talk) 01:30, 9 November 2017 (UTC)
- @Thryduulf: I only find 15 instances of this. Might be good for future general fixes, but these can be easily fixed by hand. Nihlus 01:50, 9 November 2017 (UTC)

Discussion notification
Could someone add the following text to talk pages of articles in Category:Railway stations in Melbourne and Category:Proposed railway stations in Melbourne?
==Station type== A discussion is taking place at Anzac railway station#Metro station about the use of the "type" parameter in Template:Infobox station for Melbourne's railway stations. Editors are invited to comment and discuss.
Triptothecottage (talk) 09:06, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
- I don't think this needs to be advertised on hundreds of pages. If anything, you can post it on the talk pages of the relevant projects and the template's talk page. Nihlus 09:10, 6 December 2017 (UTC)
- Understood, a good idea. I thought it would be appropriate though given that the IP editor has specifically edited pages in that cat? Triptothecottage (talk) 09:30, 6 December 2017 (UTC)

Question
Would it be possible to use AWB to scan all articles in Category:Members of the Parliament of England (pre-1707) and if an article contains Category:14th-century English people (without first colon in the syntax), to remove both Category:Members of the Parliament of England (pre-1707) and Category:14th-century English people, and to add Category:14th-century English MPs (again, without first colon in the syntax), as a more specific categorisation? Marcocapelle (talk) 12:25, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
- Yes, as long as those categories are hard-coded on the page, and not attributed via a template.
- To be clear, you want to effectively replace
[[Category14th-century English people]]
with[[Category14th-century English MPs]]
, without fixing the category link? ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅dgaf) 13:30, 3 December 2017 (UTC)- I think we were meant to read the request without the initial colon before Category, which is only there to avoid categorising this talk page, but keep the colon after Category. What do we do if the article is in subcategories? Certes (talk) 13:39, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
- Ohhh, ok, well it's a given not to use that colon since it's not visible, so no need for Marco to bring it up. "Colon before 'Category'" would be less ambiguous as well. The

- Petscan says there are 495 relevant pages. All are direct members of Category:Members of the Parliament of England (pre-1707). 402 are direct members of Category:14th-century English people but 93 are in subcategories (e.g. Geoffrey Chaucer qualifies via Category:14th-century English writers). Surprisingly, there is no overlap between the 495 and Category:14th-century English MPs. Fixing the 402 as requested should be easy. We should probably move the remaining 93 out of Category:Members of the Parliament of England (pre-1707) and into Category:14th-century English MPs but leave them in the subcategories such as Category:14th-century English writers. Does that sound like a plan? Certes (talk) 15:05, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
- It definitely does! Marcocapelle (talk) 15:20, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
- A potential problem: do all 14th-century English people who were Members of the Parliament of England qualify as 14th-century English MPs? For example, Ralph Ardern (c1374 - c1420) was was a 14th-century English person (though he's not actually in the category) but wasn't elected until 1406. Certes (talk) 15:13, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
- I've done some 200 manually until I realized I might better ask for assistance here, and (surprisingly) this problem didn't occur once. Marcocapelle (talk) 15:20, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
- Better examples, who are actually in both categories but not elected until 1401 or later: Thomas Chaucer, Sir Hugh Luttrell. There will be others, and less obvious cases such as Robert Corbet (died 1420), but I don't know an easy way to get an exhaustive list. Certes (talk) 15:56, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
- Also you get cases like David Flitwick (Beds MP 1295) who is (correctly?) in Category:English people of the Wars of Scottish Independence which is (mistakenly?) a subcat of Category:14th-century English people. He died in 1296, so it's a bit of a minefield. But perhaps I'm being a pedant and we would be fixing far more errors than we introduce, so I'm happy to go along on that basis if everyone else is. Other opinions welcome please. Certes (talk) 21:00, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
- It's probably best to ignore subcats that do not have an explicit 14th century in the category name. I can still manually recategorize any leftover articles after everything (including the follow-up below) has been processed. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:54, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
I've not forgotten this but I'm bogged down in another task that's more intricate than it appeared. I'll get around to it eventually but am quite happy for someone else to step in. WP:HOTCAT may be a more appropriate tool than AWB. Certes (talk) 13:37, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
- I did the first 200 articles (with letters A and B) with HOTCAT, but it's pretty tedious that way. Marcocapelle (talk) 12:55, 10 December 2017 (UTC)
Follow-up question
I presume we can do the same for 13th, 15th, 16th and 17th century, is that correct? In the 16th century there is an additional complexity which does not occur in the other centuries, namely people may currently be in Category:16th-century English politicians rather than Category:16th-century English people. Unlike with the "writers" example above, but similar to "people", "politicians" should be replaced by "MPs". Marcocapelle (talk) 15:23, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
- (ec) Yes, and it's useful to know that's coming so we can keep our workings for re-use. As you say, all MPs are politicians, so that category becomes a redundant parent. Certes (talk) 15:56, 3 December 2017 (UTC)

Lunar Craters
Would it be possible to go through all the pages in Category:Impact craters on the Moon and replace any instance of [[moon|lunar]] [[impact crater|crater]]
or [[moon|lunar]] [[impact crater]]
with the far simpler and more relevant [[lunar crater]]
? (i.e. Like I've done here: [1])
The former messy pairs of links were set up repeatedly on vast numbers of pages way back before the page lunar crater existed. Alevya 03:59, 12 December 2017 (UTC)
- Working Mortee (talk) 23:35, 3 January 2018 (UTC)
- Done. 1257 edits across 1544 pages in category. Alevya, there are still 67 pages that don't link "lunar", e.g. Borel (crater). Would you like me to replace
lunar [[impact crater]]
andlunar [[impact crater|crater]]
with[[lunar crater]]
as well? Mortee (talk) 01:18, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
- I say go for it, on a case-by-case basis (i.e. if it's in the lead), since there's obviously some intended consistency among the crater articles. ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅dgaf) 13:01, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
- However, the text of page should not have been changed from lunar impact crater to lunar crater. The word "impact" is (was) there for a reason, and removing it en mass to 1300 articles (in good faith, but perhaps too hastily) requires more than 1 person's request, and shouldn't be taken lightly. ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅dgaf) 13:40, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
- Are there non-impact craters on the moon? Assuming not, partly because lunar craters begins "Lunar craters are impact craters on Earth's moon", I can switch [[lunar crater]] (where there's no preceding "impact" now) to [[lunar crater|lunar impact crater]] safely. That would restore the original wording, with the more specific link. Mortee (talk) 19:35, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
- Alevya was careful enough to only request pages in Category:Impact craters on the Moon, so it is safe to do, as it's a stable cat. I've finished following-up your edits to restore "impact"; can you follow suit with the other 67 you mentioned above? FYI I only found 1 minor instance of overlinking, at Euclides (crater). ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅dgaf) 20:01, 4 January 2018 (UTC)

- Good point about linking to the discussion. I've made the same change for the 67 pages. Mortee (talk) 20:39, 4 January 2018 (UTC)

English MP categories
- Previous discussion: Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Tasks/Archive 9#Question
@Marcocapelle: I've finally got around to starting this task and will report back here. Certes (talk) 13:32, 27 January 2018 (UTC)
- That's the 13th and 14th centuries finished off. In general I've not done subcategories but I have unlinked Category:English people of the Wars of Scottish Independence and sorted out its member articles. Does that look like what we needed? If so then I'll get on with the later centuries. Certes (talk) 18:01, 27 January 2018 (UTC)
I've had a quick look at later centuries. The good news is that once we reach 1500 there are fewer pages. But there are more subcats such as Category:English MPs 1504. Do we want to disperse the people into those? I didn't bother for 13-14th centuries (and won't for 15th) as those subcats are so sparse there. Certes (talk) 18:20, 27 January 2018 (UTC)
- @Certes: I presume it's too complicated to automate dispersing people into subcats like Category:English MPs 1504. If I'm right about that, then let's first move everyone into the correct century MP category, that will certainly make future manual diffusion into specific parliaments a lot easier. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:17, 27 January 2018 (UTC)
- Neither approach is totally automated. JWB puts up the page with the category changes and read the article. About 80% of the time I accept the standard change and hit Save; about 10% are about people who were only MPs in an adjacent century so I Skip; the rest are more complicated or simply lived in a different century. Certainly filing into centuries is easier, and makes sense if that's where most of the pages are already. Certes (talk) 20:20, 27 January 2018 (UTC)
I've completed an initial run for 13th to 17th centuries. Things I've not done:
- 1701–07, because there's no category Category:18th-century English MPs (note: several 17th-century MPs also served in the 18th but aren't categorised as such)
- checking for redundant parents, e.g. articles in both Category:English MPs 1504 and Category:16th-century English MPs
- subcategories, any overlap between Category:13th-century English architects and Category:Members of the Parliament of England (pre-1707)
Hopefully that's most of the work done. Do you think anything else could sensibly be automated? Certes (talk) 02:11, 28 January 2018 (UTC)
I've also addressed the subcategories. Category:Members of the Parliament of England (pre-1707) is now down to 138 pages, which someone should be able to diffuse manually.
In a few cases, especially in the 17th century, what I've done isn't ideal for two reasons:
- I've moved articles to Category:17th-century English MPs etc. that are also in its subcategories for specific parliament dates. It's not always clear whether they're in all relevant subcategories, and they'll be easier to check there than if left in the nebulous Category:Members of the Parliament of England (pre-1707).
- I've moved articles to Category:17th-century English MPs which would also belong in Category:18th-century English MPs if such a thing existed.
There is further checking and diffusion to be done, but I think it's now time to leave things to HotCat or other methods.
Beware of Category:William Shakespeare, which is in Category:17th-century English writers (and 16th). Although the Bard himself undoubtedly belongs in its parent Category:17th-century English people, many of the category's other articles such as Henry Green (politician, died 1399) do not. This can cause problems when using PetScan. Certes (talk) 13:05, 28 January 2018 (UTC)
@Marcocapelle: I've moved what I can from Category:Members of the Parliament of England (pre-1707). I am currently categorising a number of MPs such as Ralph Crepyn who weren't in any MP category. You may also want to look at Category:Members of the Parliament of England (1485–1603). Certes (talk) 15:19, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

Four-digit numbers
It appears that 1000 through 9000 have standardized subsections, and they used to have different standardized subsections. I propose that
- redirects from [[abcd (number)]] to (subsections of) [[a000 (number)]],
- links of the form [[a000 (number)|abcd]] (or to subsections)
be redirected to the following subsection
- (blank)
- if bcd = 000
- #a001 to a099
- if b = 0
- #ab00 to ab99

A more complex script might fail to suggest the change if the section name was abcd, but if I'm running the script, I can reject those changes.
If someone can construct AWB modules or replacement scripts to do that, I'm willing to execute them, but it's beyond my regular expression construction capabilities. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 23:28, 4 February 2018 (UTC)
- I wrote a few regexes for the links but a search for test cases finds very few pages with links of that form:
- Have I missed something? Here are regexes for the three cases. I use JWB rather than AWB but I think the syntax is the same.
\[\[ *(\d000 \(number\)) *(#[^]|]*)?\| *((\d0)00) *\]\] → [[$1|$3]] \[\[ *(\d000 \(number\)) *(#[^]|]*)?\| *((\d0)([1-9]\d|0[1-9])) *\]\] → [[$1#$401 to $499|$3]] \[\[ *(\d000 \(number\)) *(#[^]|]*)?\| *((\d[1-9])\d\d) *\]\] → [[$1#$400 to $499|$3]]
Redirects look harder: I know how to get the page name ($x) but not bits of it. Hope that helps, Certes (talk) 01:01, 5 February 2018 (UTC)
- 1701 (number) has links in the old format
- 2016 has an anomalous form, actually not in the format I was looking for, but it picked up something I could fix.
- 2600 doesn't seem to have the link I was looking for: I can't find the character string "000".
- List of prime numbers needs a lot of substitutions.·
- Triangular number seems to have only one link that needs substitution, but I'll check further.
- I suspected most of the troublesome links were redirects. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 02:06, 5 February 2018 (UTC)
- I've run regexes 2 and 3 on List of prime numbers. (Hopefully regex 1 would do nothing!) Some links such as 5023 lead to a section that doesn't mention the number, but that's no worse than before. Certes (talk) 03:38, 5 February 2018 (UTC)
- I don't see any errors. Thanks. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 05:27, 5 February 2018 (UTC)
- Redirects now done. Page lists came from Rdcheck. Almost all were abcd (number), e.g. 1006 (number), with some simple numbers such as 3571 and one I've edited manually: 2^11. I skipped redirects such as 1973 (number) which have their own anchors.
- Here are the regexes in case we want to do something similar again later. The first one inserts £ followed by the page name; the others replace that by #section.
(#REDIRECT *\[\[ *(\d000)[ _]\(number\)).*?\]\] → #REDIRECT [[$2 (number)£$x]] £ *(\d0)([1-9]\d|0[1-9]).*?\]\] → #$101 to $199]] £ *(\d[1-9])\d\d.*?\]\] → #$100 to $199]] £ *(\d0)00.*?\]\] → ]]
- Job done? Certes (talk) 13:36, 5 February 2018 (UTC)
- Done. All redirects are to existing appropriate sections or anchors, and no redirects without an anchor which should have one. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 16:47, 5 February 2018 (UTC)

Adding short descriptions to Wikipedia articles.
At this stage this is a query on practicability.
Is AWB suitable for adding Wikipedia:Short descriptions to articles which lack them, using the short description from the associated Wikidata item, but allowing user override and improvement?
If so, how would it be done? This would be a huge task requiring operator inspection of each of several million short descriptions to ensure that it is appropriate before writing to the article, and in many cases some improvement will be required. In some cases the description will be entirely inappropriate and can simply be skipped altogether, and in a very large number of cases there is no short description available, and can be skipped altogether. If there is already a short description on Wikipedia, it should not be overwritten. Cheers, · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 06:17, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
- Pbsouthwood, certainly doable with AWB via the module, which recognizes C# 3.5 & VB.NET 2.0. You can use the WP API to get the "wikibase_item" (aka Wikidata item), then use the QID to access any related Wikidata data. I haven't had much need to pull specific WD items' info, so I don't know how to quickly query the contents of a specific WD property, etc., (and would love to hear it) but scraping the HTML (also doable via AWB) is always an option, but certainly not the most elegant. Once the desired information is fetched, it can be placed on the WP page prior to saving, to be reviewed and edited by the operator. ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅dgaf) 13:16, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks Tom.Reding, Knowing that it is possible is a good start. Do you know anyone who might be interested in setting up such a task so that users less skilled at coding could run it? · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 17:12, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
- Well, chances are that the person coding this wouldn't be main user, due to the large # of pages, and the non-automated nature as you've described it. This almost seems like something that should be incorporated into like Visual Editor or something. I don't have any experience with VE, but I'm just guessing.
- If there were a list of pages with "ok-as-is" short WD descriptions, i.e. on a per-project basis, showing project vetting/consensus of the list, that would be a much more straightforward task that could be handled here or at WP:BOTREQ. ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅dgaf) 17:29, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
- I would imagine that getting it incorporated into VE would be a major task, and as I have also very little knowledge or experience with VE, can't really comment further, except to predict that it would be slow.
- Tagging articles as having OK WD descriptions should be faster than copying them over, and is an option to consider. · · · Peter (Southwood) (talk): 07:48, 22 February 2018 (UTC)

Motorcyclist page moves
Please can an admin who uses AWB assist with moving articles about motorcyclists to consistent titles? See WT:WikiProject Motorcycling#Pages to move. AWB is needed only for the list of 110 pages in the collapsed box. All of them follow a standard pattern, and where a page exists at the new title it's a redirect to the current title. The few articles mentioned outside that box are more intricate and I'll do them manually. Thanks, Certes (talk) 15:42, 9 May 2018 (UTC)
- Is replacing characters in a page name repeatedly possible with AWB? As far as I know you can only manually move pages for the current page that shows in the feed, rather than doing the same replacement automatically for all pages in the feed. Pinging Tom.Reding, as they seem to be very familiar with AWB and how it works.--SkyGazer 512 What will you say? / What did I do? 15:54, 9 May 2018 (UTC)
- SkyGazer 512, Certes is right for asking an admin to do semi-automated page moves in AWB, since non-admins don't have that utility enabled. Since I'm not an admin, I can't speak to AWB's page-move interface's functionality, but from the few times I've seen that requested, it didn't seem to be a problem. I also think there is a non-AWB admin tool which makes mass page-moves quite painless, but I could be wrong. Passing the buck to Primefac >.>, whom I think has done one of these before? ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅dgaf) 16:09, 9 May 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you for replying. I never knew that AWB allowed admins to perform semi-automated moves, that's definitely helpful to know. :)--SkyGazer 512 What will you say? / What did I do? 16:14, 9 May 2018 (UTC)
- Before I pull the trigger on this one - all of the existing articles have a consistent naming convention. Are you saying that said convention is outside of the norms for similar naming conventions? In other words, is there consensus for this? Primefac (talk) 18:47, 9 May 2018 (UTC) (please ping on reply)
- @Primefac: The current position is that we have 110 articles called "Joe Name (motorcycle racer)", 70 "Joe Name (motorcyclist)", and a ragbag of others that I can fix manually. The two main qualifiers are doing the same job. Editors adding links are understandably confused, and often put up a redlink when there's a perfectly good article. My interpretation (as an involved editor) of WT:WikiProject Motorcycling#Article title qualifiers is that there's a consensus to standardise on something and a weak preference for (motorcyclist). If you feel that this would benefit from further discussion, please hold off and suggest a better forum. Certes (talk) 19:45, 9 May 2018 (UTC)
- Oh. Duh. Of course you would only list the names that would require renaming, because the others already conform. Unless someone posts here that they've already done this, I'll make an effort to get to it tomorrow. Primefac (talk) 19:58, 9 May 2018 (UTC)

Help deprecating Template:Tooltip
I recently closed an RfD, the result of which was to deprecate {{tooltip}}. Per Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Accessibility#Text, tooltips should be avoided except for the use of abbreviations. In short, every current use of tooltip (many are in templates) should be either:
- Converted to {{abbr}} if it is an abbreviation; OR
- Removed, whether by restructuring or converting to a footnote or whatever
While I imagine AWB will be most helpful, many cases will not a quick or simple fix, and this will require a fair bit of human effort. Still, I wanted to advertise this here in case anyone was interested. ~ Amory (u • t • c) 17:54, 19 May 2018 (UTC)
- Amorymeltzer, it would have been useful to save #R'ing {{Tooltip}} until after people had a go at this. Finding transclusions of {{Tooltip}}, when it's an #R to {{Abbr}}, is now more difficult.
- Also, can someone post proper examples of each case (1, 2a, 2b, etc.), for those that might want to help that haven't used this/these templates frequently? ~ Tom.Reding (talk ⋅dgaf) 19:59, 19 May 2018 (UTC)
- Galobtter has done a bunch already, so there are some good examples in his contributions.
- Proper MOS use: Replacing tooltip with abbr
- Improper use: Restructuring to avoid improper usage
- Another option, should one wish to retain some information, would be to replace
{{tooltip|1|2}}
with1<ref>2</ref>
or1{{efn|2}}
and adding {{notelist}}. I would imagine this to be uncommon.
- As noted by Galobtter, many of the sports templates are likely to be fairly straightforward, with obvious abbreviations like pos. ~ Amory (u • t • c) 20:37, 19 May 2018 (UTC)
- Noting that Tooltip has been a redirect for 8 years. Yeah, I'd say that the most easy to do semi-automatically would be to go through uses of {{tooltip|Pos|Position}} and all other sports table headings like that and replace with Abbr as being clearly fine to use. It'll probably be harder to fix the bad uses as they'd be more varied. Galobtter (pingó mió) 04:56, 20 May 2018 (UTC)

User has been mass-adding flag icons to infoboxes, which is directly contrary to WP:INFOBOXFLAG. Was going to do it myself but it would probably be much easier for an AWB user to just zap them as they used the same edit summary “added two flags” each time. Beeblebrox (talk) 19:21, 25 May 2018 (UTC)

- The trick is to move the page & subpages, then move the page alone back, then move the page & subpages over again and keep repeating until all are moved. Because the process won't overwrite subpages that already exist you don't risk a redirect mess and the process goes to the next 100 subpages in the queue. Timrollpickering 15:04, 26 May 2018 (UTC)
