This page is about the 2017 activities of QWiki Club. For the current 2018 activities, see Wikipedia:GLAM/State Library of Queensland/QWiki Club 2018.

#QWiki Club is a monthly Wikipedia editing club established to build on the success of the #1lib1ref campaign. You are invited to attend to become more confident in your skills and edit Wikipedia pages around a different theme each month. We'll use the hashtag #QWiki when saving our edits and across social media. Wikipedian Kerry Raymond will be at the sessions to provide training and support.

#QWiki is open to any member the Queensland GLAM community.

The club will meet on the first Monday of every month from 12-3pm at The Edge building at State Library of Queensland. You decide how long you want to stay and you can join us at any time during the session.

If you cannot make the sessions at SLQ, you can still be part of #QWiki, wherever you are. Use the hashtag #QWiki and let us know how you're contributing!

#QWiki December 2017: A Very "Mayor-y" Christmas

Let's give the mayors of Queensland's local government areas a Christmas present by getting their names into Wikipedia. All local government area articles have (or should have) a section called "Mayors" or "Chairmen and Mayors" or similar where all the chairmen/mayors over the years are supposed to be listed (some lists are more complete than others!) plus there is a field in the infobox (top right corner) for the current mayor.

Now we have some reliable sources on the mayors:

  • elected in 2016 at [1]
  • elected in 2012 at [2]
  • elected in 2008 at [3]

On those webpages, you will find a link to the "Mayoral results" for each LGA. Each of those Mayoral Results page will be used in the citations.

Here's the list of local government areas that need their mayors updated with dates, names and/or citations:

Tip: Be wary of any mentions of "now", "present" or "2008-" (etc) as it may mean that the article was updated at a previous election but may not be fully up-to-date with the 2016 election. Check the citations if in doubt. If still in doubt, add citations from the Electoral Commission of Queensland

#QWiki November 2017: Queensland Electoral Redistribution

Every electoral district for Queensland state elections has a Wikipedia article, e.g. Electoral district of Algester. However, in 2017, there was a redistribution of the electorates, which is documented here. While most of the updates have been done to reflect the changed electoral districts, there are some remaining tasks to be done.

Easy tasks: add 2017 electoral maps to the article

The Electoral Commission of Queensland website has all of the maps for the individual electoral districts. Most of the electoral districts have carried over in name (at least) from the previous redistribution in 2008 but normally with changed boundaries; their Wikipedia article still has a rough map from 2008. The task is to replace the 2008 map in the "infobox" (the table of information on the right hand side of the article) with the 2017 map while retaining the 2008 map in the article but not in the "infobox".

This means you have to learn how to add an image from Wikimedia Commons into an article and how to edit an infobox and add an image in the infobox (which is done a different way to adding it to the body). There are quite a few steps, but it is easier than it looks!

Here are the steps:

1.Open 3 separate browser window/tab for each of:

  • the ECQ website
  • Wikipedia (as a logged-in-user)
  • Wikimedia Commons (as a logged-in-user)

2. Pick an electoral district from the bullet point list of electoral list below. These instructions assume the electoral district of Algester.

3. Go to the ECQ website and open the map (PDF file) for Algester and save it on your computer (note the directory it saved it in).

  • The filename will be ECQ-2017-Final-Algester.pdf

4. Upload the 2017 map to Wikimedia Commons:

On Wikimedia Commons, upload the ECQ-2017-Final-Algester.pdf file either using the Blue Button towards the top right or from the toolbar on the left with the following steps:

  • Select media files to share
  • Navigate to the ECQ-2017-Final-Algester.pdf file you downloaded, then click Open
  • twiddle thumbs during the upload then click Continue
  • Click "This file is not my own work", then for the Source, we need the title of the file and the URL (from where you downloaded the file -- don't just replace the Algester part of what appears below, you need the actual URL of the file you downloaded) as follows:

  • then add the Author:

  • then you need to explain why (in terms of copyright) you are allowed to upload this file. Click on the option of "The copyright holder published this work with the right Creative Commons licence" until you see the sub-list of several options. Click on the 4th option "Creative Commons Attribution 4.0" (which is the long way of saying CC-BY), don't use the first option of "Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 4.0". If you look at the lower left corner of the map, you will see the CC-BY logo (so you know you are doing the right thing!).
  • Then click NEXT.
  • Next screen you need to provide a title. You will probably already see "ECQ-2017-Final-Algester" in the box, but let's do something more meaningful like

  • as the title and you can copy it into the description too.
  • For the date, click on the pencil and type 2017 into the box.
  • The category you need is:

  • Then click NEXT. After a few moments, you should see a thumbnail of your map and some information (but not for the Visual Editor user). So please click on the thumbnail and and you should see the heading

  • leave that on screen (we'll come back later).

5. Now switch over to your Wikipedia browser window/tab and open the Wikipedia article, e.g. Electoral district of Algester

  • You should be seeing a 2008 map in the infobox. We are going to preserve this for comparison but not in the infobox.

6. Open the article in the Visual Editor and then open the Infobox by clicking it and then clicking on the Edit in the pop-up box. You are now seeing the fields of the infobox, the first field we are interested in is "image" (e.g. QLD - Algester 2008.png).

7. Copy the filename in the image field. Now close the infobox box by clicking "Cancel" (top left of the pop-up).

8. Now we will preserve the old electoral map in the article:

  • Position your cursor at the start of the text of the article "The electoral district of Algester is an ..." and then choose Insert > Media from your tool bar. It will start searching for images that relate to the article title. With luck, after a little while, it will find the 2008 map and it will appear as a thumbnail. If it doesn't, paste the filename you copied from the infobox into the search box and wait and it should appear.
  • Click on the 2008 map thumbnail, double-check the meta-data to ensure it is really the image you want, and then click "Use this image".
  • it wants a caption e.g. "2008 map". Then click Insert. You should now see the map in both the infobox and below it in the main article area.

9. Now, let's add our 2017 map to the infobox:

  • Click on the infobox and then click Edit to open it for editing.
  • Now pop back to your Wikimedia Commons window and copy the file name of your 2017 map except for the "File:" at the start. You should have copied:

  • Now back to your Wikipedia article. Paste the file name into the "Image" field over the existing 2008 file and change the "Caption" field to something like:

  • Now click Apply Changes, and you should see the 2017 map in the infobox.
  • Then Save Changes, add your edit summary e.g. "#qwiki updating the map", and Save Changes. Done!

Harder task: expanding articles

Some of the new electorates are named after prominent people. The Redistribution Report (large document, slow to open) has short biographies of these people in Appendix A (page 365 paper, page 218 PDF). Use this information (which is NOT CC-licensed so can't directly copy) and/or from other sources to update this person's Wikipedia article, including that an electorate has been named after them!

#QWiki October 2017: Queensland Literary Awards

The Queensland Literary Awards (QLA) was established by a not-for-profit association of passionate Queensland volunteers and advocates for literature, in response to Queensland Premier Campbell Newman disestablishing the Queensland Premier's Literary Awards in 2012. In 2014 the State Library of Queensland took on the management of the QLA, building on the existing partnership of the literary and community sector as key stakeholders.

#QWiki August 2017: Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame

The Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame induction dinner was held in July 2017, recognising a new round of inductees for their contribution to the economical and social development of Queensland. This goal this month is to improve the presence of the inductees, past and present, on Wikipedia. #QWiki July 2017: NAIDOC Week

Our achievement this month was to add content about indigenous community histories and culture by taking advantage of reusing this list of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community histories which were published by the Queensland Government under a CC-BY licence. The CC-BY licence allows others to reuse the material (i.e. not a copyright violation) PROVIDED that the State of Queensland is attributed as the original creator.

#QWiki June 2017: Queensland Day

For June #QWiki Club, we are celebrating Queensland Day and writing about the things that make Queensland such a special place!

As part of Queenland's 150th birthday, in 2009 Queensland Premier Anna Bligh announced an official list of 150 Queensland icons.

On every Queensland Day, new people and organisations are inducted into the list of Queensland Greats.
