PDF Extraction

[1]

Article(s): Guelph Police Service

Request:

Can someone extract the logo in this PDF? I'm having troubles... -- Connormah (talk) 04:35, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

  Request taken by SiBr4. Extracting an SVG from a PDF itself isn't hard in Inkscape, but it often results in unmanageable SVG files. I'm now trying to reduce the file.
What do you want to do with the logo when it's done? It's probably copyrighted and can only be used on WP as a non-free file. SiBr4 (talk) 09:42, 8 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Just a standard nonfree upload to replace the lead image in the article listed above, I think. Connormah (talk) 03:18, 9 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It should be non-free. Even you've uploaded File:Toronto Police Service Logo.svg nearly 5 years ago with a non-free file. ///EuroCarGT 03:26, 9 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I now have the greater logo including the repeated name "Guelph Police Service" and motto "Pride Service Trust", though the current raster image only includes the shield with surrounding leaves, crown and motto. Should I keep the logo as it appears in the PDF or only the heraldic parts of it? SiBr4 (talk) 08:51, 9 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Pinging the original requester Connormah. I have the greater logo ready; I can easily remove some parts to keep only the logo as it appears in the GIF file if that's what you want. SiBr4 (talk) 20:12, 13 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  Done: It seems to have been awhile so I found a completely vector version on the website and for the most part matched the colors to those found everywhere else. File:Guelph Police logo.svg The Haz talk 02:49, 2 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

That doesn't look anything like the original.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 21:18, 16 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The original was listed as being a recreation, and it was implied to be based on the quoted description. The copyright notice of the site on which it is hosted prohibits using more than 5% of an image hosted there. Given the simplicity of the design, it was the opinion of another user and I that copying it directly carried too high a risk of copyright infringement. Since the design was implied to be based on the given description and the description falls within the public domain, I then used that description to produce a new design. Notably, both the one you linked and the one I provided are re-creations. It is highly likely that neither is a faithful reproduction of the flag, and I could not find any other recreations of the flag. MjolnirPants Tell me all about it. 21:41, 16 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@KAVEBEAR: The file was deleted by RHaworth according to the deletion log. Reason: File may be non-free, the option to create a free version was available, and now a free version exists ///EuroCarGT 21:44, 16 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This image might be of some use. It actually resembles quite well the construction by MjolnirPants, apart from detail in the hands and eyes. Jamesx12345 22:18, 16 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Three apples

  Resolved

This image is used in articles on natural number (also called "counting number") in several Wikipedias. It upsets mathematical pedants because a mathematical set cannot include two of the same thing, and all the apples in each row are identical. It would be better if all the apples in each row were different. For instance the first row could show a red apple; the second a red and a green apple; and the third a red, a green and a yellow apple. Or russet instead of yellow if you prefer. Or you could flip some of the apples left/right, and remove the leaf from another — just make each of the apples in the same row different.

I have tried to change it myself, but it's an SVG image and I don't know enough about SVG, any raster format would be easy.

Can someone please alter some of the apples? Maproom (talk) 21:30, 12 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Klein model history

Template:Klein model history

Article(s): Klein Bikes

Request:

Can somebody please advise on making this look nicer? Are there any straightforward ways it could be easier to interpret or work in more browsers? Thanks, Jamesx12345 17:00, 16 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

  • Question/Comment Is the data in this table likely to change? Also, how important are those notes on certain models? I have whipped up a quick raster image version of the table, you can see it here. Is that all you wanted? I must admit that I do have misgivings about using an image to represent a table on WP, however. I think it would be better to figure out a better way of conveying the information in that table, which is not a graphics request. Perhaps a two column table, with the first being the model name, and the second being the range of years in which it was produced. On another note, that image I whipped up is the print preview of an AutoCAD drawing. ACAD for the win! MjolnirPants Tell me all about it. 20:44, 16 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • The info is quite stable, but I'd much rather that the "source code" was public in case new sources are found and it needs updated. The notes are nice, but not essential, although the references are best as they are (they correspond to the years). Part of me wants to to be a nice png that comes in at <100kB, but the table doesn't actually look too bad on my phone, and fits a standard monitor fine. The main advantage with the matrix format is that is it easy to see what bikes were produced in a particular year, and where models replaced each other. Making the columns narrower (as has been done) changes it slightly, and might make it work in a larger range of browsers, but I'm not a huge fan. Have you any thoughts about the use of colour? It grew gradually, so the colour scheme is awful, and is likely the ripest area for improvement. Jamesx12345 22:13, 16 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think this is the right place for this, then. From what you've said, I think we both agree that a wikitable is the best format for this data. I'm still willing to help (I have some programming experience, so I'm not averse to digging into the wikitable syntax to work something out). I'm going to mark this as completed and we can continue on your talk page. MjolnirPants Tell me all about it. 13:59, 18 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Barack Obama approval ratings graph

Article(s): United States presidential approval rating (currently), Barack Obama (hope to add once image is updated)

Request:

(Note that the original uploader has not responded to a request to update the graph.) This graph has not been updated since March 29, 2013 (excluding updates since then by a bot which didn't seem to take for some reason). I'd appreciate it if someone could bring it up to date. I expect this should be fairly simple for someone with experience with SVG files (i.e. not me). Thanks --Philpill691 (talk) 05:09, 27 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

Might be a good idea to give the original uploader a little bit more time (maybe also write a Wikimail?). Since he probably put some effort into writing the bot for automatically updating this graph, I'd assume reactivating the bot would be the most efficient way to get this graph updated properly. The last edit of the uploader was on June 22nd, so he might still be active enough to get back to you. --Patrick87 (talk) 20:12, 27 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Patrick87: The user is inactive enough that waiting for him seems impractical. I'll note that the user tends to not reply at all to talk page messages based on past threads currently on his talk page and in the archives. I've also just noticed that he did not respond to a similar request to mine a year ago, so I really don't think we can assume he will ever reply to mine. I feel the user has had ample time to respond to me. So in light of this lack of response, I feel the best course of action is to manually update the graph for now (especially given the large amount of missing data), and continue to periodically do so over time. I hope the original uploader takes back over in the future, but I think we shouldn't rely on that happening. --Philpill691 (talk) 01:24, 30 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but some people have real lives and might not be around on Wikipedia regularly (maybe even have disabled e-mail notifications for talk page messages). That might be a reason for seemingly unanswered request. The fact the user wrote a bot shows to me however, that he's dedicated enough that a slightly extended waiting period might be justified. Writing a Wikimail would help in case the Wolfgang42's has disabled e-mail notifications. Do whatever you feel is right, but messing with a users files (who might even be on holiday as another possibility) is the easiest way to piss him of (for feeling overlooked) while getting inferior results (because people usually put an increased amount of time into "their own" graphics) with increased amount of work (because bugging the graphists here for work that might have been done by the original uploader in the end). Remember that we're all doing voluntary work here and there's no deadline on anything. --Patrick87 (talk) 08:51, 30 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
