Article editing

I have submitted one of my articles, 'Interpreting the Grandes Etudes of Fryderyk Chopin', but in copying/pasting it the lines have stretched across the screen, outside of the dotted line box. I am not especially conversant with computers, so could not see how to correct the problem. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Adlear (talk) 00:21, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

Paragraphs are separated by an empty line. You tried to make paragraphs with leading spaces but that causes special formatting. I have fixed the formatting of Interpreting the Grandes Etudes of Fryderyk Chopin but the page risks being deleted because it claims copyright with "© Angela Lear". The page was indeed deleted as a violation of Wikipedia's copyright policy. I can't see the deleted content, but the "interpreting" in the title suggests it may possibly have been a personal essay or a piece of original research. I'm afraid neither would be suitable for Wikipedia, whose articles are built using verifiable facts from existing published sources. Karenjc 09:33, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

thanks and another question about page format updates

Sorry, but I cannot see any way to reply to the query thread I started yesterday, asking for help with an image on Alec Su's page. So, thanks! The changes are fine. I have another question regarding some comments for this page that have now been addressed (eg, introduction too long). Is there a way to ask somebody to review and remove the comments if the format is now OK? I have reworded and shortened the intro and put additional text in separate sections. I've also put in one reference citation in answer to the other page comment (although since any factual information available is in Chinese it's difficult to find more of these). Ironically enough I believe this site has been 'hacked' as in evil person loading evil programs.

When I downloaded the article I wanted to change the title a little, but when I attempted to do this my keyboard malfunctions ie: two characters instead of one, wrong key etc. Doesn't happen anywhere else just this page.

Searching for external links, but only in the article namespace

Is there a way to restrict Special:LinkSearch to a namespace, or at least just (Main)? I was doing a search that returns thousands of results, but ~90% are on something other than article space, mostly Talk. I was able to hack a kludge together, returning 500 results then grepping them for lines with only one colon, but that's not a good approach... for one thing, I don't have links anymore.

Solutions, anyone?

You can kinda do it with the API though, e.g. http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=exturlusage&euquery=google.com&eunamespace=0 (the eunamespace=0 part limits that to article namespace).

See [2] for the (fairly limited) documentation.

Otherwise, you might get success asking for a query to be run, tswiki:Query service Chzz  ►  05:23, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

Category:French serial killers - classification by occupation

The discussion page for Category:French serial killers notes that its namespace is not regularly watched, and recommended coming here to the Help Desk instead.

This classification caught my eye:

Classification: People: By occupation: Murderers: Serial killers: By nationality: French

also: France: People: By occupation: Murderers: Serial killers

Serial Killer as a specialisation within the general occupation of Murderer seems a little insensitive and outré. Can some other classification be used? I'm not sure if it helps, but there is a Serial Killer Task Force that may deal with these types of detail in articles. CaptRik (talk) 12:30, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

As a general rule, Wikipedia does not adjust its wording solely to avoid offending someone. See WP:EUPHEMISM. I'm not sure how that rule would apply to this particular case, as I don't know that "murderer" is commonly viewed as an "occupation" per se. --Teratornis (talk) 16:29, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

important info deliberately removed and page locked to prevent correction

i have a page on my watch list for a few years and just noticed that some one has deliberately deleted some important info from that page and locked the overview to prevent anyone from correcting the info currently being displayed. how do i rectify this condition? oxymorons and other nonsensical phrases

This has bothered me for some time. Is there a page where "preferred" phrases are at? I'm talking about replacements for phrases such as "exact estimate" and "almost perfect", etc. I'm reluctant to change such things unless I know how to substitute it, or that I'm not on the wrong track myself! --Ratmangxa (talk) 09:08, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

In the case of "exact estimate", just replace it with something which describes it better; if you provide a link to where you've seen this I'll take a look for you as well. The "Words to watch" list in the Manual of Style may be what you're after. It logs certain problematic phrases and suggests alternatives, though those you mention aren't included. Gonzonoir (talk) 10:09, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, Giftiger. "Exact estimate" was the one that originally got me to wondering. I see that in Canadians of American origin. It's currently used in 18 other articles, too. I, personally, can't come up with anything less bizarre sounding, which is why I threw it out for everyone. --Ratmangxa (talk) 11:49, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

I changed it to "reliable estimate": I agree that "exact estimate" is a confusing turn of phrase. It was essentially implying that no one's been able to produce a reliable estimate though. GiftigerWunsch [TALK] 11:52, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

I think "exact estimate" sometimes refers to estimating a specific value instead of estimating an interval or a vague term like "very few" or "more than last year". In other contexts "exact estimate" may refer to an estimate that was actually spot on although this was unknown by the person making the estimate. For example, "I don't know much about USA but I estimate there are 50 states". Look at the context before changing formulations and don't change something quoted from a source. One could also speak of an estimate that is exactly reported. For example, if I estimate a value as 35.343, then 35.343 would be my exact estimate. If someone rounded it to 35 they would be reporting my estimate inexactly. The problem with a phrase such as "exact estimate" is that the modifier "exact" can have several different meanings, and the exact (ha) meaning might not be clear from the context. To make sense of what the phrase means, the reader might need to know who or what is doing the estimating. If all we have is an estimate floating around, and no idea of whose estimate it is, we might not know what to make of it. --Teratornis (talk) 19:17, 14 October 2010 (UTC)

Secure server links from Wikipedia

I find it very frustrating when I click on a link from Wikipedia, and suddenly find myself out on the secure server where I'm not logged in. A number of recent cases have arisen with links from WP:ANI or from users' talk pages. Is there a policy that links should be provided to the normal server, rather than to the secure server? If not, shouldn't there be one? David Biddulph (talk) 12:53, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

I'm not aware of any guideline about it. Wikipedia:Manual of Style (linking) is for articles and not the place to discuss this. It mostly occurs for diffs. You could suggest a change at Help:Diff#Linking to a diff. See also Wikipedia:Complete diff and link guide#How to put diffs and links into your text and Template:Diff. Maybe somebody can reverse User:Anakin101/alwayssecurewikipedia.js for you. Wikipedia:Please use fullurl is an essay about an option that never moves you away but like Template:Diff, it's cumbersome to write instead of just copying a url from the browser. Forgotten committed identity

I have forgotten the pass phrase I used to create my committed identity. What should be done when this happens? Do I just create a new one and write it down? —O'Dea 13:08, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

Just go ahead and create a new one. Don't lose the pass phrase this time ;-) I assume there's not currently any dispute about you being you. Your committed identity will only be needed if there is a dispute (e.g. if it's suspected that your account has been cracked). If that's not the case you can change your committed identity at will. I changed my recently, as I wanted to switch from SHA-1 to SHA-512 (my levels of paranoia increased...) TFOWR 13:17, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

No, I am not in any identity dispute now but since I bothered to create the committed identity, there is no point in having it if I cannot recall the phrase I used to generate it. I will wait another couple of days just to see what other comments, if any, arise, then I will probably proceed to make a new one. I doubt if anyone will offer me a god-almighty decrypter to crack open my 128 character identity which probably would not be cracked by NSA computer arrays any time before the heat death of the universe, or at least before beer o'clock on Friday. If you've forgotten the key phrase, there's nothing to do but create a new key and make sure you don't forget that one. Since there's no question at the moment as to your identity, it's not extremely important anyway; if you create a new one now, you'll be able to later prove that you're the same person that you are now. Unless you remember the phrase you used to generate the hash, the chances of figuring it out are mathematically insignificant (unless of course you used a weak phrase which could be brute-forced, in which case the value of the hash is called into question). Although there's no direct reference for this birth year in Carlos D. Bustamante, this article says he is 35, and it was published last month. Based on that, he could've only been born in 1974 or 1975. Do you have a reliable source that you can provide that says he was born in 1976? --Mysdaao ^talk 13:52, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

It may seem odd that we are asking you to provide sources, since you are say you are his father; but bear in mind that on the Internet, we cannot tell whether you are who you say you are (or whether I am who I say I am). Italics in article titles

How does one get the actual title of an article to be listed in italics? I had never seen the actual name of an article listed in italics before. Then, I stumbled across this article (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), and I was surprised to see the title itself in italics. So, how can I italicize an article's name? Also, is this a new feature ... or has this been around awhile? If the latter, why are names of books and films, etc., rarely – if ever – given in italics when they are the title of a Wikipedia article? Thank you! (Joseph A. It comes from the infobox - there's an optional parameter to prevent italicisation. TFOWR 14:03, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

Using wikimarkup, no. The default for all of the header tags would have the bottom border, but h3, h4, h5, h6 are defined with border-bottom: none; to suppress it. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) ^talk 14:34, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

Donating material to wikipedia

Hi, the university I work for, The University of East London, holds a number of specialist archives, the contents of which might serve some useful purpose being donated to Wikipedia. I've read through the page: Donating Copyrighted Materials but I was wondering if there were any further help pages on the subject of donating, the legalities involved, and anything else that I may need to know.

Media copyright questions may be a better place to ask, but basically you can only donate materials to which you own the copyright. So the first thing to do is sift through your collections and figure out the materials that you own outright as opposed to those that you just "house" for others. – ukexpat (talk) 14:54, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

Please also bear in mind that Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, not a library or archival system. If the materials will be directly used in existing or future encyclopaedic articles (eg if there is or might be an article about some of the archives themselves), they will be welcome; but if they are going to serve just as sources to be referenced, then Wikipedia is not the right place for them. --ColinFine (talk) 21:30, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

The Wikimedia Foundation which runs Wikipedia has other projects such as Wikimedia Commons (for media files) and Wikisource (for source documents) which might be more suitable for the material you want to donate. Several institutions have made large media donations, for example the German Federal Archives or Bundesarchiv donated 100,000 photos to Commons. Since you will probably need to maintain an ongoing discussion with other users of the project to which you donate materials, to work out the technical details, you should create an account and merge it so you can automatically log on to any Wikimedia project wiki. It's easier for registered users to communicate with other registered users here. When you post without logging in, you are identified only by an IP address which may not uniquely represent you. When you create an account, choose a user name to represent yourself (you may use a pseudonym) rather than a name which represents your institution (see WP:GROUPNAME). --Teratornis (talk) 19:08, 14 October 2010 (UTC)

How to put template

• By the way, if you want to change the message on the userbox (I see another user helped you to achieve a similar effect), you could copy the {{User Germany}} template to your userspace (for example at User:Cruks/German citizen) and adjust the text, and then change the babel template to {{babel|de|en-3|...|:Cruks/German citizen}}. External Link Deleted

I've twice seen my 'external link' deleted from a wikipedia page which I contributed to. How can I tell if this is Wikipedia's actions or someone looking to secure website traffic through the 'top stop'? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Charris88 (talk • contribs) 16:46, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

Wikipedia does not exist to drive traffic to external websites, and external links that do not comply with policy are removed. In your particular case, links to self-published sites like blogs are usually discouraged unless the author is a recognised authority on the subject (see WP:ELNO) and you should not link to sites you personally own or maintain (see WP:EL#ADV). If you think they may be appropriate, they should be discussed on the article's talk page first. That said, the anonymous IP removing at least some of your links has left his/her own links on those pages, which are equally spammy, so there probably is an ulterior motive. I shall clean up the links in the articles concerned. Karenjc 17:04, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

Whatamidoing, I checked XLinkBot's criteria and I'm not sure the IP's additions are sufficient to be blacklisted - there's only one outright replacement of the blog link with a commercial site (which has already been removed), plus a re-deletion of the blog when it was added back. The IP's other few link additions were mainly links to metalibrary and may have been good faith, I can't tell, because none of them work and they have already been deleted. The spamsite has not been added back again, so perhaps it was a one-off. Karenjc 19:05, 12 October 2010 (UTC)

(edit conflict) If you look on the sidebar, you should see a link saying "printable version". If you click on that, you'll find a more printer-friendly version. Printing that will depend on your browser and/or operating system. In windows, most browsers will have the option under File > Print; most operating systems and browsers will call up the print menu when you press Ctrl + P. I hope that answers your question. Do you need help with something specific? I had a look at the text and removed the last sentence as a BLP/NPOV violation, since it implies anti-semitism. I've also added a cleanup tag to the section of the article, which is a bit of a disjointed mess of quotes; probably best to discuss that on the talk page before trying to change it though.
