Image error

Hello. When I try to insert and save an image into the infobox on my Keith Oxlee page, the following error message appears inside the infobox: [[File:Keith Oxlee on the Springbok tour to New Zealand and Australia in 1965..png |frameless|alt=]]

Some infoboxes work differently than others. For that one, all you need to do is put in the file name and the infobox works out the size and alignment. I've fixed it for you. Dismas|^(talk) 00:56, 25 December 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, Dismas. Is there no way of resizing the image in this particular infobox? Due to the poor resolution, I want to display it smaller. --DocDee (talk) 03:29, 25 December 2013 (UTC)

(The OP asked this at my talk page as well, which I saw first. So here is the response that I posted there just in case it can help someone else too.) The infobox uses the Template:Infobox rugby biography template. At that page, you can read all about the various things it can do. It does have an image_size field that you could put into the template. For learning purposes, I won't put it in the article for you. That way you can try to do it yourself. how to edit

I would suggest that you read WP:Referencing for beginners as a starting point. Apart from sorting out the syntax of referencing, ensuring that you provide specific references for items in the text, specifically you have at least one dead link, and also a number of references to Wikipedia itself, which isn't permitted (see WP:CIRCULAR. - David Biddulph (talk) 02:26, 25 December 2013 (UTC)

I did a little bit of tiying up of your references, but ideally you would add a few more of the parameters in the use of {{cite web}}. See WP:Referencing for beginners for more information on referencing. ARTICLE NOT VISIBLE IN GOOGLE SEARCH

I have created an article in wikipedia which is related to shopping mall. When i am searching it through google search - My article is not available. Will it take time to get published. Will it be published on the same day of its creation or how many days will it take. Kindly Help in this regards

The Merlin Homeland Mall Wikipedia page comes up in a Google search. It usually takes a few days for a Wikipedia page to work its way up to the top of a Google search. Try searching Google with "Merlin Homeland Mall Wikipedia"[1] and you will see the page higher (I see it second) in the Google search results. -- Jreferee (talk) 13:10, 25 December 2013 (UTC)

Because the page is simply an advertisement, it will likely be quickly deleted from Wikipedia and the google search. You will need to rewrite the article taking into account the basic requirements for having a stand alone article about a topic as well as the content requirements of presenting material from a neutral point of view and not a promotional one. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 13:44, 25 December 2013 (UTC)

Help

I created a page about a week or two ago and I just logged into my account and I wanted to look for the page to see if it's been approved or denied. Where do I go to find the page? I searched the name of the page in the search bar and it's not coming up. Clicking the Contributions button in the top right of the site will take you to your Contributions page, where you can see your previous edits. Here you can see that your article is located at Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Alus (singer). :) Samwalton9 (talk) 15:11, 25 December 2013 (UTC)

"Photo requested" template does not accept "Czech Republic" as a location

If one tries to use the "Template:Photo requested", the valid country location "Czech Republic" does not work, nor does the obsolete "Czechoslovakia". I have no idea about where or how to fix this. Question about Wikipedia

I am doing a case study at my local college entitled 'The Internet & Money: How people profit from other peoples work' and I have some questions about Wikipedia and Jimbo Wales.

Please , I am asking you not to block me or delete this question, as I mean no offence to anyone or anything, and I am not anti-Wikipedia.

1. Wikipedia is a 'free encyclopedia' from what I understand. So how does Jimbo Wales make a living, if he founded and runs Wikipedia? He has a house, a car and generally a good life from what I understand. Wikipedia turned over 16,000,000 USD in 2011 in profits

The encyclopedia is free - you can see any page any time at no charge. The foundation that runs the Wikimedia projects is a non-profit 501 c (3) under the US tax code i think, that means the funds the company generates do not go to an owner or shareholders as profits- they are put to work to meet the goals of the project - in the case of Wikipedia, providing a free encyclopedia. Jimbo is paid a salary by the Foundation for the work that he does to keep the Wikimedia projects going, just like almost all other non-profits pay salaries to people who work for them. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 18:34, 25 December 2013 (UTC)

Just adding that Wales presumably receives most of his income from sources other than the Wikimedia Foundation (which is the non-profit that runs Wikipedia)—from Wikia, for example, which is a for-profit project that he also founded. Deor (talk) 18:48, 25 December 2013 (UTC)

As others have indicated, there are no "profits". All charities pay their employees. By contrast (and to oversimplify), the principals of a company, after paying their employees (and possibly themselves as employees), take (or also take) a share of the profits according to their percentage ownership of the stock of the company. There are lots of for-profit companies that make money on the free or heavily discounted/subsidized labor of others that would appear to make a better subject for study than Wikipedia (Wikimedia) for the very reason that it's a charity and so there's no direct correlation between the concept of "profit" and the fact that there's a volunteer work force. Again, the fact that the charity employs people and pays them is neither here nor there. Note that if you named the study, you might want to amend to place the missing apostrophe in the title (peoples'), as headlining a project with a punctuation error in its title can give a bad impression at the start. I could tell you how to look up the actual salaries of Wikimedia employees (where they are paid more than $100,000), as its public information, but it's irrelevant to your study, if properly done.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 21:13, 25 December 2013 (UTC)

Jimmy Wales receives no salary from the Wikimedia Foundation. And your claim "Wikipedia turned over 16,000,000 USD in 2011 in profits" makes no sense. Wikipedia is one of several websites operated by the Wikimedia Foundation. Wikipedia receives no money, although it does encourage readers to donate to the Wikimedia Foundation (which didn't have "over 16,000,000 USD in 2011 in profits").
