Removal of Commons template

A file I uploaded a couple of years ago (File:MellinsAirship.jpg) had the copyright tag changed from my original {{PD-US-1923-abroad}} to {{PD-Old}}. I believe the {{PD-Old}} tag is incorrect, as the image was first published in 1902 and the photographer is unknown, so they may very well have still been alive in 1970 or even 1980. I've changed the tag back to the correct one. However, since the re-tagging, a user has in good faith added the {{Copy to Wikimedia Commons}} template (which hasn't been actioned, obviously). Is it OK for me just to remove this template, or is a more formal process necessary? Tevildo (talk) 00:19, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

Tevildo, how is this not a case of {{PD-UK-unknown}}? Judging by the WorldCat records, this looks like a UK publication, and if the magazine failed to attribute the author, I don't see how we could identify the author. Nyttend (talk) 01:58, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

Well, the photograph is signed with a monogram ("ASMB", or possibly "ACMB"), so the photographer is (in principle) identifiable - would such identification be too much work to be considered a "reasonable" enquiry? If so, then the UK-unknown template is better, and the photo can go to Commons. Tevildo (talk) 10:06, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

I didn't realise that was a monogram. You could go through all the other issues of the magazine and put together some identification (e.g. some earlier issue "We welcome photographer Arthur Charles Montague Baker" to our staff), or you could go through all the other issues to prove that he never came up again, so either way you've not done enough (I'm guessing) to establish it as anonymous. Referencing errors on S-CRY-ed

The error message says "Unknown parameter |month= ignored". "Month" is not a parameter to CITE JOURNAL. You can identify the specific issue with the DATE, VOLUME, and ISSUE parameters. MB 01:55, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

"at least X years old"

Is there an age template that can supply an age in years without requiring a specific starting date and without producing a range of years? Würzburger Stein includes a sentence beginning "An unopened bottle from the 1540 vintage, making it at least 472 years old...", which dates the statement to 2012. Of course, this is now four years out of date, and I don't want it to get out of date again, so I checked {{Age in years}}, but it's meant for individuals with birth dates that simply aren't provided; {{Age in years|1540}} results in 483–484, and I'd like something that produces just the minimum age, so the code for this sentence could read:

...1540 vintage, making it at least [template] old...

Do we have any templates that do just this, or templates with this as one of their features? Nyttend (talk) 01:51, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

@Nyttend: If you know the exact vintage then you could just use the {{age}} template as at the end of that year. So "at least {{Age|1540|12|31}}" gives "at least 483". Would that suit what you need? --Gronk Oz (talk) 06:34, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

Speedy deletion recreation

Feelance was deleted under G11 on April 3, and Feelance Co. on April 4. It was created again as Feelance co. on Oct 10, which I just speedied again. Is there something else that should be done to prevent this SPA from creating this a fourth time? MB 06:52, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

Eagleash, no point to that; salting prevents recreation of a specific title, and even one character of difference (Co. vs co.) avoids the salting — Feelance (company), for example, is not affected by salting the others. Since this was all the same user over a long period of time, and the user's done nothing else, I decided that it was {{uw-spamblock}} time. Nyttend (talk) 14:26, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

Yes, I know it's case sensitive, so it would be sensible to add variations if applying for protection. However, a spamblock seems the best way. 15:07, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

Help:Cite errors/Cite error ref no input On Queensborough Bridge. The Proper term is Borough. There is NO SUCH word as boro. It is NOT in any dictionary!

I'm not clear what this "post" relates to, but if you look here the first meaning of boro, as a noun, is "Alternative spelling of borough" - Arjayay (talk) 19:58, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

That doesn't alter the fact that the actual name of the New York bridge is Queensboro Bridge. I'm sorry if the name offends your sense of linguistic decorum. There is a Queensborough Bridge in Canada, though. Deor (talk) 22:17, 18 December 2016 (UTC)

(edit conflict) I looked at Special:Contributions/Maincable 2 and guess you refer to [1]. The bridge is officially called "Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge" as for example seen at http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/infrastructure/queensboro-bridge.shtml. The article doesn't even say "boro" is a word, it just says the name of a bridge. Your edit also made other errors and has been reverted. Regardless what the bridge is called, the file is called File:Queensboro Bridge from Manhattan side.jpg and wouldn't have been displayed after your edit even if it hadn't broken the entire infobox. @Maincable 2: You are perfectly welcome to be incorrect, just not to add incorrect information to Wikipedia articles. I encourage you to review the multiple cited sources at the article which show that its official spelling includes Queensboro, and has since it opened in 1909. Paid editing

Hi there - I am needing a wikipedia page set up for my charities Gynaecological Cancer Funds award winning campaign - Lady Garden - and searched for someone on the internet UK to help me with this. I contacted a man called Mark Bray who has a company called Wiki Wizards. He invoiced me for half payment up front and when I asked for security reasons to pay via PayPal he completely disappeared. Wikipedia pages should never be "set up for" any subject. Companies such as Wizards of Wiki are not popular with the volunteers here on Wikipedia, but this company seems to understand Wikipedia and claims to take its obligations seriously regarding WP:Paid editing and WP:Conflict of interest. If they just do Google searches for WP:Reliable sources and summarise these using a neutral point of view, then perhaps they can help you to create a good article about your charity if it is notable in the Wikipedia sense. Please be aware that anything they write is likely to be changed by other volunteer editors here. Volunteers here will also help you to write an article without charge. It sounds like a potential fraud - almost all genuine Wikipedians are volunteers, who do not get paid for any of their editing. There's probably not a lot Wikipedia/Wikimedia can do about people offering to write paid articles, but you might be able to get advice by contacting Wikimedia, info-en@wikimedia.org. How do we know how many of our "volunteers" are actually being paid as consultants by companies such as this? (My guess is not many, but how can we know?) My research suggests that WizardsofWiki is not fraudulent because it has been going for over four years and I can trace a name, address and mobile phone number (but not a landline). That's not to say that their product is good value, I don't know whether it is or it isn't, but if you have money to spare in your charity .... Dbfirs 13:22, 19 December 2016 (UTC)
