Infobox error

Helped The infobox for Thérèse Cadorette has this error: "Expression error: Unrecognized punctuation character". I think that the accents on the e's is likely what is causing the issue. However, the name should keep the original spelling in the infobox. Is there anything I can do to get it to work? Clovermoss (talk) 00:18, 28 June 2019 (UTC)

Hello @Clovermoss:, Template:Birth date needs full dates with year, month and day, and apparently displays this (pretty confusing) error message when required parameters are missing. See the template documentation for more details. I have changed the template version to Template:birth year in the article to avoid this problem. GermanJoe (talk) 00:34, 28 June 2019 (UTC)

@GermanJoe: Oh, okay! Thanks for helping. Yeah, it is kind of confusing to have an error message about something completely different. I do have a follow-up question: this is the first time where I just don't know the date of birth. Not yet, at least. I'm trying to do more research for a date, but so far the most I have is a year, even though I know the exact date of death. If I don't end up finding the exact birth of date in the near-forseeable future, is there anything I can do? Clovermoss (talk) 00:49, 28 June 2019 (UTC)

Yet another paragraph that I think needs splitting

Helped This is from the article on Fear Effect. Since I may play this game sometime and don't want it spoiled for me, could somebody else please split it?

"Hana arrives in Hong Kong accompanied by her partners, Royce Glas and Jacob 'Deke' DeCourt. What begins as a simple snatch and grab turns into a fiasco: The father of the runaway, Mr. Lam, attributes his fortune and power to a pact he made with demons long ago. Wee Ming, who is a paper doll given life, has been scheduled to serve as a sacrifice to Yim Lau Wong, the mythical "King of Hell". Hana's contact inside Mr. Lam's organization, Jin, is discovered, tortured, and left to die with a bomb strapped to his chest. Hana frees him, but he is killed anyway shortly after. Meanwhile, Glas is attacked by a VTOL jet and forced to flee into Mr. Lam's building. After avenging Jin, Hana is captured and beaten by Mr. Lam and his thugs. Glas is able to rescue Hana, and the duo make their escape where they meet Deke in front of the hotel they are staying at. While listening to Jin's last message for Hana, the trio are forced off a bridge but are able to swim to a junk. While sailing down a river, Deke spots Wee Ming amongst a burning village. Deke and Glas give chase while Hana gets dressed, but all three are soon separated by the undead villagers. They soon stumble upon a military train where the hostile soldiers shoot anyone on sight for fear of the villagers. Hana and Deke wreck the train trying to steal it, but Glas is able to find a jeep with Wee Ming sitting inside. She asks to be taken to a Madam Chen's restaurant, which also doubles as a brothel, hoping to find answers about her existence. When Glas is caught sneaking in the brothel, Mr. Lam surprises him, cutting off his left arm. At the same time, Deke is murdered while trying to infiltrate the brothel from upstairs. Hana sneaks in by dressing up like one of the prostitutes, where she runs into Wee Ming again after she had been dragged off by Madam Chen, who is working for Mr. Lam. It is then that Wee Ming's powers activate, after being splashed with Deke's blood, transforming the working girls and Madam Chen's thugs into demons."

From my brief scans of the paragraph, I think the sentence starting with "[t]hey soon" would be a good place to split it.--75.110.35.108 (talk) 03:00, 28 June 2019 (UTC)

Location of towns and cities on maps

Helped I've never understood the formatting of maps on Wikipedia articles, specifically in relation to the location of towns and cities. For example, the infobox for Grasse has two options: a map of the whole of France, and a map of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Select one of them, and the location of the town is shown with a red dot. But when I click on the map to enlarge it, I'm presented with a larger version of the map like this, but one from which the red dot has disappeared. I understand that this is because the red dot in the infobox is not really on the map, it's somehow being overlaid on top of it. But what I want to be able to do is to view the map at standard size but with the red dot on it to indicate the location of the town. How can I do this? --Viennese Waltz 09:45, 28 June 2019 (UTC)

It's a location map, see template:location map, although I can't see how it's invoked in the infobox. You can, however, click on "show" where it says "location of Grasse" beneath the Coat of Arms, which shows a more detailed location on Wikimedia maps, which you can then show as full screen if you like. Rename an image?

I uploaded a PNG file to replace a GIF, and planned on using the same details form the GIF article to poulate the PNG one - the details are exactly the same apart from the filetype.

In my haste, I made an error with the filename - but I can't see where to change it?

Files are treated as any other page, so renaming files works by moving the file to a new name using the "move" link. Here's a direct link for the file in question. Regards SoWhy 11:18, 28 June 2019 (UTC)

I think this falls under WP:FNC#1 - "Uploader requested". I tried the direct link, but get an error saying I don't have permission to move files. For reference, the filename should be "Cyberun_1.png", which brings it into line with the GIF it's replacing. Chaheel Riens (talk) 11:41, 28 June 2019 (UTC)

Yeah, you need to have been granted the right to do this by an administrator, see Wikipedia:File mover. Or I guess an admin could do it themselves. --Viennese Waltz 13:17, 28 June 2019 (UTC)

Strange phrase appearing in page preview but not in article

Helped Here is the problem:

When in article County Cork or County Limerick (two Irish counties), when I have the mouse over the link "County town" in the right panel, I can read:

"A los Angeles like town where the kardashians live in Great Britain or Ireland is usually, but not always, the location of administrative or judicial functions within the county."

Instead of:

"A county town in Great Britain or Ireland is usually, but not always, the location of administrative or judicial functions within the county."

Apparently the problem occurs whenever there is a link to County town, including in this question. I have no clue about what may be causing this.

If you look at the page history for the County town article, you will see that it was vandalism which was reverted on 11 June. It's very odd that the vandalized version has remained as the active version in the page-preview cache since then. This is a known issue, see here. I've tried purging the article as suggested on that mediawiki page but the vandalized version still appears in the page preview. --Viennese Waltz 12:17, 28 June 2019 (UTC)

eFront page, different company, same name

Hello,

Help is needed. The wiki page eFront is about other ( affiliate marketing network ) eFront company, I would like to have eFront wiki page that's about eFront software company.

Since the name eFront, as well as domain efront.com, belongs to IT eFront company, can I just edit the existing wiki page with the right content?

If you're wondering about changing an article that's about one subject so that it's about a different subject that happens to share the same name, then no you can't. ¶ Moreover, your editing history here suggests an exclusive interest in the company, which in turn suggests that you may be connected to the company. If you are, you shouldn't write about it. What you can do is go to Wikipedia:Requested articles, choose the most suitable category, and request an article about it. Be sure to supply links to disinterested, reliable material about the subject. -- Hoary (talk) 14:20, 28 June 2019 (UTC)

@Dstane: When we have two or more articles about a subject with the same name, we use disambiguation. In this case, we could change the name of the existing article to "EFront (marketing network)" and create a new article named "EFront (software company)", and then create a disambiguation page named "EFront" that points to the other two. However, regardless of the name, an article must be about a subject that is notable by our definition: see WP:NCORP. This is the only fundamental requirement for an article. Any other problem can be fixed, but not lack of notability. If other editors do not agree that a subject is notable, the article will be deleted. We delete about 200 articles a day, mostly due to lack of notability. -Arch dude (talk) 14:48, 28 June 2019 (UTC)

Hello, thanks for the answers! @Arch dude: that article ( eFront eLearning software )is about different company, eFront is provider of software solution for financial institutions. So, is it possible then to have one named eFront (marketing network) and the other one eFront - alternative investment solutions? If it is, the next step is request/creating an article? Thanks!

"The dates which have been proposed for Yu's reign predate the oldest-known written records in China, the oracle bones of the late Shang dynasty, by nearly a millennium. Yu's name was not inscribed on any artifacts which were produced during the proposed era in which he lived, nor was it inscribed on the later oracle bones; his name was first inscribed on vessels which date back to the Western Zhou period (c. 1045–771 BC). The lack of anything which is remotely close to contemporary documentary evidence has caused some controversy over the historicity of Yu. Proponents of the historicity of Yu theorise that stories about his life and reign were orally transmitted in various areas of China until they were eventually recorded during the Zhou dynasty, while opponents of it believe that the figure existed in legend in a different form—as a god or a mythical animal—during the Xia dynasty, and morphed into a human figure by the start of the Zhou dynasty. Many of the stories about Yu were collected in Sima Qian's famous Records of the Grand Historian. I think the sentence starting with "[t]he lack" would be best. Could anyone please tell me if this is a good idea, since this would make the first half into a two-sentence paragraph, which may be too few sentences for a paragraph? Also, I understand that this is the sort of thing that generally doesn't require asking on the help desk, but, as I've previously stated here, I don't feel comfortable splitting paragraphs without the approval of others.--Thylacine24 (talk) 21:02, 28 June 2019 (UTC)

my article was deleted

This means that there was no indication that the subject was notable by our definition. The deletion was uncontroversial: see WP:PROD. Please see WP:N and WP:ATH to see how we define notability. Helped I'm trying to create a film article titled #Roxy but I'm being prevented from creating an article under that title. For the time being, I created a draft of the film article under the title Draft:Roxy (film). Therefore, my question is: how do I create the article with that title?
