Use of "story" as synonym for "novel"

edit

I know that "story" encompasses all forms of literature and other media, but could anyone please tell me if it's acceptable to use it in direct reference to a novel, i.e. "the Donna Tartt story The Goldfinch"? (To be honest, that wasn't the example which inspired this.) (Edit: Added second quotation mark after "The Goldfinch" during the same session as reply below; sorry about that.)--Thylacine24 (talk) 00:41, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thylacine24, to me that's fuzzy and imprecise. I don't see the point of using anything other than the correct term. Popcornfud (talk) 00:49, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Popcornfud Thanks for letting me know. (Edit: Fixed template, sorry about that.)--Thylacine24 (talk) 01:12, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Draft Problems

edit

Someone moved an article, which is still in Draft form, onto the mainspace without the AofC's approval and implied that I supported the move. Can you help me?(Oinkers42) (talk) 02:03, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The Afc was rejected due to listicles, but I disagree since those sources mentioned about the article and I also contributed to that draft significantly, so I moved it to mainspace for people. If they disagree, then feel free for them to send the article info Afd. HansonJunior (talk) 02:17, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

WHAT IS GOING ON WITH THE COVID DATA FOR COUNTRIES?

edit

I USE THE LIST ON COUNTRY COVID DATA TO ANALYZE THE SPREAD AND INTENSITY OF THIS PANDEMIC.

HAVING ACCURATE DATA IS VERY IMPORTANT.

THE CURRENT DATA ARE NOT ACCURATE.

WOULD WHOEVER IS RESPONSIBLE PROVIDE A REASON FOR THIS?

ALSO, A SUGGESTION ON WHERE OTHER UP TO THE DAY DATA ARE AVAILABLE.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR WORK ON PROVIDING THE DATA. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.48.161.90 (talk) 13:17, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is a volunteer-written encyclopedia and should not be used for up-to-the-minute statistics on anything, let alone something as important as COVID. Wikipedia is a secondary source; please use a primary source for COVID data, such as a governmental website. Also see Wikipedia:General disclaimer. If there is specific information that needs to be updated on a specific page, please indicate what changes are needed, with particularity, on the page's talk page. Hullo! I tried to make a page in my sandbox that contained infobox templates, to save me having to search for them all the time (MerielGJones/sandbox/templates). The page has now been linked by Pibot to a Wikidata item https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q97441316 I don't think this should exist. Please can you tell me how to get rid of it and prevent it happening again? Many thanks --MerielGJones (talk) 13:25, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@MerielGJones:, You could request deletion of the wikidata item at Wikidata:Requests for deletions. It seems you created the page in main space and it was moved by El Cid, El Campeador, so the problem should not reoccur. TSventon (talk) 13:39, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@El cid, el campeador: @TSventon:, Many thanks for the advice and moving the Wikipedia page. I will request deletion of the Wikidata item. --MerielGJones (talk) 14:38, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I've also removed the link entirely, which fixes this end. Glad to see the RfD came through. Good work. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 14:51, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Mike Peel Hi, this thread is about a Wikidata item created by Pi bot, https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q97441316. Would it be possible to tweak the bot so it wouldn't create data items when it saw a blank infobox template? TSventon (talk) 15:26, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I've deleted the Wikidata item. This issue should be rare, so I'm not sure the bot code needs changing, but I'll have a think about it. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 15:32, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Mike Peel: thank you. @MerielGJones:, if a bot does something odd, it is helpful to let the operator know in case it happens too often. TSventon (talk) 20:29, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Mike Peel:@El cid, el campeador: @TSventon:@Lee Vilenski: Many thanks to you all for your help and advice.--MerielGJones (talk) 08:20, 17 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Draft won't publish

edit

Hi,

I am looking for help with my page I'm trying to publish. It is only a draft and won't be published for weeks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nidabbas (talkcontribs) 15:01, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nidabbas If you are referring to your Sandbox, you have not submitted it for a review. Furthermore, if you were to do so, it would be rejected quickly, as it has almost no independent reliable sources to support its content. The only two sources you have merely cite the existence of patents. In order for this company to merit a Wikipedia article, it must have significant coverage in independent reliable sources, showing how it meets the special Wikipedia definition of a notable company. Significant coverage does not include the company website, staff interviews, press releases, announcements of routine business transactions, or basic facts like the existence of patents. Please see Your First Article for more information, as well as Articles for Creation as to instructions on how you can submit the draft after it is improved.
If this is your company, Wikipedia's Terms of Use require you to read and formally comply with the paid editing policy. You should also review conflict of interest. 331dot (talk) 15:10, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I have checked the deletion discussion of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asif_Kamal but I feel it's not true. I think this page should be kept as the argument of non-notability and poor appearance is not valid. I would request if anyone can review and look in to this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 103.66.18.208 (talk) 16:17, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. The place to make your argument is at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Asif Kamal. You need to present arguments from Wikipedia's principles - if you say the argument of non-notability is not valid, then it is up to you to demonstrate how Kamal meets Wikipidia's criteria for notability. If you don't give such evidence, then your argument is likely to be ignored. (There are links to a couple of useful essays on that page). --ColinFine (talk) 16:27, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How to put important person's profile on wiki

edit

Some of the important sportpersons are not mentioned on the wiki. I would like to put their profiles on the wiki. How do I go about it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Inab Shujaat (talkcontribs) 17:28, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Inab Shujaat: we want to have an article on any sports person who meets our definition of notability: Carefully read Wikipedia:Notability (sports) and Wikipedia:Common sourcing mistakes (notability). If you are certain that a person meets this criterion, then proceed to WP:YFA. If you are not sure the criterion is met, then do not proceed: we will just delete the resulting article. -Arch dude (talk) 17:37, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Inab Shujaat: If you do proceed, I suggest you look at a few existing articles about similar sports people. Pick the one whose format and style you like the best and use it as an example for your new article. -Arch dude (talk) 17:42, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Inab Shujaat I would correct your word choice in that there is not a single "profile" on Wikipedia; Wikipedia has articles. In order for a sportsperson to merit an article, they must be shown with significant coverage in independent reliable sources to meet the special Wikipedia definition of a notable person in the sport they play(such as cricket, American football, soccer, etc.) If the player meets at least one of the criteria, there can be an article about them. Keep in mind that successfully writing a new article is the absolute hardest thing to do on Wikipedia. You will increase your chances of success if your first spend time editing existing articles in areas that interest you(such as sportspeople), to get a feel for how Wikipedia operates and what is expected of article content. If you want to attempt to write an article, I would suggest that you first use the new user tutorial, read Your First Article, and use Articles for Creation to create and submit a draft article for review by another editor before it is formally placed in the encyclopedia, so you find out any problems first. 331dot (talk) 17:38, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
