Image not showing properly

Having two non-free images to illustrate an article

I'm currently working on the article Cheshire Crossing. This is a comic originally illustrated by one artist, then re-illustrated by another. The article talks a lot about how the original art was terrible, and how a new illustrator was brought in on an updated version.

Currently, the article has one non-free image, the cover of the new version. I want to also have, somewhere in the article, a cover from the original run, to allow a reader to see the art that is talked about so much. However, from what I can gather, cover art can only be used as a non-free image can only be used if it "will be shown as a primary means of visual identification at the top of the article dedicated to the work in question." I'm presuming there can't be two "primary means of visual identification". Does this mean I can only have one non-free cover? Could I make one image which combines the two? What are my options? (edit conflict) @HenryCrun15: This is not the simple "use the cover once" case. There is another free-use rationale that applies here. You can use a copyrighted work under under the free use doctrine if the work itself is being discussed, and not merely being used to illustrate a publication as we do with the cover. Your problem will be navigating our minefield of restrictions to justify applying this doctrine. Please document your argument for using the work, both in in the file description and in the article's talk page. -Arch dude (talk) 03:41, 6 October 2020 (UTC)

Question about comma usage

I'm uncertain about what to do in a sentence with a phrasing like "... and because of [event], [result] occurred." Could anyone please tell me if the comma should be there? Could anyone also please tell me if the tense of the verb, in this case "occurred", matters in regards to comma usage?--Thylacine24 (talk) 02:44, 6 October 2020 (UTC)

I agree with Tenryuu. Note in particular that unless the sources specifically say that Y occured because of X, the statement "because of X, Y occurred" is original research. --ColinFine (talk) 11:36, 6 October 2020 (UTC)

@Thylacine24: In my experience, unless you're rewriting your own work, or doing a substantial rewrite anyway, some (especially the original writer) might regard editing of optional commas (i.e., those without a bright-line reason to be or not) as annoying or even disruptive if done in volume. Editing commas required (or more rarely, not) by the MoS or standard grammar, or necessary to resolve ambiguity, are, of course, OK. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 01:00, 7 October 2020 (UTC)

@AlanM1: Could you please tell me if the MOS covers the type of comma usage I've brought up here? Skimming through that section, I don't think it does, though the examples involving Burke and Wills may. @Thylacine24: That would be beyond the scope of the MoS (as well as my knowledge). Unless someone else wants to make a strong case one way or the other, it's up to you. Comma might have something useful. If you ask at WT:MOS, they'll probably tell you it's a grammar question, but might point you to the right place to discuss it, which I can't seem to find. Maybe ask at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Grammar if you must, though it's pretty quiet. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 01:40, 7 October 2020 (UTC)

De-clutter talk pages

There was a consensus that allowed removing talk pages notices by bots such as [2] to de-clutter the talk page. Now I can't find that discussion. Link, please! Thanks (please also ping me). 4nn1l2 (talk) 06:14, 6 October 2020 (UTC)

4nn1l2, I don't know what discussion you are referring to, and if it's that you're looking for specifically, I'm afraid I won't be able to help you. WP:UP#CMT, as policy, states that

Policy does not prohibit users, whether registered or unregistered, from removing comments from their own talk pages, although archiving is preferred.

Tenryuu, Thanks for your response. I'm sure there was a discussion and a following consensus which allowed removing bot-archival notices about dead links by cyberbot II and InternetArchiveBot but not in a systematic manner (i.e. not by another bot or in a large amount). When I de-clutterd Talk:Ranked-choice voting in the United States, I was acting per that consensus. Now I need that discussion, but can't find it. 4nn1l2 (talk) 07:00, 6 October 2020 (UTC)

However, I note that (i) you have attempted to add a link to a page within corbettuttarakhand.blogspot.com, that (ii) this is a mere blog, and that (iii) the email address provided within the blog's "about" page is remarkably similar to your username for Wikipedia. wiki article on Makau W. Mutua - personal vendetta

I noticed that the article on Kenyan-American law professor Makau W. Mutua https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makau_W._Mutua has been incrementally changed over several months by an unregistered user who transformed it into a biased, one sided and slanderous article that does not meet BLP standards. Makau W. Mutua's professional and academic achievements are barely mentioned or removed. The references used are weak. The article is emphasizing law suits and grievances of faculty members at his university and relies heavily on "negatives". It looks like a personal vendetta piece. "Undoing" is impossible because there have been too many changes made. And I am rather new to Wikipedia and not very experienced as an editor. Could this page be put under "clean-up" or get a special notice box?

Whatadifference Articles are not for merely listing or emphasizing a person's accomplishments or positive aspects of their lives; they are for summarizing any and all independent reliable sources that choose to write about a person. That includes "bad" information about them. If there are specific points that you feel violate BLP, please bring them up on the article talk page. To increase the chances that other editors will see your comment, you may make it a formal edit request(click for instructions) though that is not required. 331dot (talk) 08:03, 6 October 2020 (UTC)

A "long comment" in French?

I can't figure out what is going on here. When I went to fix it the edit box says "This long comment was added to the page to prevent it from being listed on Special:Shortpages. It and the accompanying monitoring template were generated via Template:Long comment. Shantavira Looks like an IP address added that long text in French. I've reverted it so now it's just a link to the Wiktionary page. The long comment is just so that redirects don't appear on the short pages mointoring page. Joseph2302 (talk) 14:36, 6 October 2020 (UTC)

No, this is about the English article Stanley Meyer's water fuel cell. The OP has twice edited it, once to replace a referenced paragraph with a shorter, unreferenced, paragraph in Russian; and after that was reverted, to replace the paragaph with the words "In proces...", presumably meaning they are intending to replace it again.

Translation of a Wikipedia Article

I am wiring about this article on Wikipedia English about the 21st Century Icon Awards https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:21st_Century_Icon_Awards

I would like to know if it is necessary to mention that this is meant to be a translation from the same article which already exists in Wikipedia Spanish. Under this name, https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Premios_Icono_del_Siglo_XXI or it is not relevant to mention that this is a translation. I just want add the link from Wikipedia Spanish in the languages section but the system doesn't allow me. In that case, how can I let know the experienced editor who will decide whether it should publish or not in Wikipedia English that it has already the same article in Wikipedia Spanish? Can you help me with this please?

@Enciclopedista100: There are three interrelated issues. 1) You must formally attribute the Spanish article to comply with its CC-BY-SA license. Do this on the talk page and/or in one or more edit summaries. 2) The back-link to the Spanish article will occur when you (or someone) updates the Wikidata item for the article, which will point to the article in each language Wikipedia . 3) you cannot use the Spanish article as a reference, since Wikipedia is not a reliable source by our own definition. You will need to use the references that the Spanish article uses. It's OK if the references are in Spanish. -Arch dude (talk) 20:03, 6 October 2020 (UTC)
