Disabling search suggestions

Tagging Error

I was trying to add some much needed maintence tags to The Puck Podcast, but when I submit the query I get "Tagging article: error "Service Unavailable" occurred while contacting the API. (null)". I think the tagging tool uses twinkle. I was wondering whether the issue was the article I was tagging or if it's something else. I'll give it another try tomorrow. Reassess Haukilahti

I have significantly expanded the article Haukilahti based on the Finnish Wikipedia article fi:Haukilahti. Isn't it time already to replace the old "stub" rating from thirteen and a half years ago with a refreshed rating? JIP | Talk 03:30, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

How to display current time?

Hi, I am trying to modify my user page using the Wikipedia user infobox template, and the current time parameter in the userbox does not display the correct time when my timezone (UTC+05:30) Indian Standard Time is specified. Please help. Thank you Nsn2635 (talk) 04:40, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

Using Social Media Posts as Reference

Hi,

I am creating a Wikipedia page for our Jewellery Brand.

For this, we are about to add Collections / Campaigns on Wiki.

Can we use Social Media Posts / Links as Sources.

• @Prasadkuchimanchi: Wikipedia is not a place for promotional activities, you can't campaign your jwellery collections on Wikipedia, and more than this, if you want to cite any sources it must be reliable, you can't add social media posts as sources, you can see WP: Notability, Thanks, Dhaneesh 💙 Ram 06:57, 04 September 2021 (UTC)

Hello, Prasadkuchimanchi. To add to what Ram Dhaneesh said: for Wikipedia to have an encyclopaedia article about your brand (not a "page for" it), there needs to be sufficient independent material published about your brand to meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability: if such sources do not exist, then no article is possible.

If the sources do exist, then an article is possible. Such an article will not belong to you, will not be controlled by you, will not be for your benefit, and may end up containing material that you do not want it to say. Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources.

If, given these warnings, you wish to go ahead with the extremely difficult task of writing a new article, made harder when you have a conflict of interest, you need to start by declaring your status as a paid editor - this is mandatory. Then read your first article carefully to find out how to create a draft for review. But if you don't start by finding the independent reliably published sources I mentioned above, all your work will be wasted. --ColinFine (talk) 09:37, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

No, it can't be moved to Commons, as it is protected by copyright. If the Tamil Wikipedia accepts non-free use images, you may be able to load a copy there. See the advice at ta:விக்கிப்பீடியா:கட்டுப்பட்ட_உள்ளடக்கம். --David Biddulph (talk) 07:30, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

Details to include in top line of artist page

Hello, Is it appropriate to include a description of an artist as "Grammy Award-winning" in the lede? I had included it on Van Morrison's page, but it has been removed.

Jack Clynch, The usual standard first sentence in biographies is: "<Subject's full name> is a <nationality> <occupation or other reason for notability>.". No adjectives or other embellishment are normally included in the first sentence. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 13:33, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

MOS:INTRO states: "The reason for a topic's noteworthiness should be established, or at least introduced, in the lead (but not by using subjective 'peacock terms' such as 'acclaimed' or 'award-winning' or 'hit')." I only asked where on Wikipedia this alleged infringement had taken place; and asked what permissions were thought to be needed. The OP, like everyone else, is at liberty to ignore my question. I am aware of differing requirements in various jurisdictions around the world: in the UK, the concept of residential details (such as an image, or address) which are publicly available (such as from the street) being "private" does not exist. (Hence the availability of Google's Streetview, banned in some other jurisdictions.) Bazza (talk) 12:01, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

The address on its own is (in the UK at least) public information. Linking it to a person without their consent is, as you say, illegal. Bazza (talk) 12:48, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

The post was about Wikipedia. We often remove private information we aren't required to remove by law, and we should almost never publish a residential street address in any context if that's what the post is about. You don't have to refer to laws and permissions to get it removed. Just mail info-en-q@wikimedia.org if you don't want to discuss the details on this very public page. If your question is about your name and/or address, then please follow the above recommendations. If, however, you live in a home that is itself notable (for example, a historic landmark or the location of a notable event) that has been described in reliable published sources, then Wikipedia will keep the information in our encyclopedia. @The Supermind: Knight Templar redirects to Knights Templar. Don't use the redirect in interlanguage links. There should be no complications with the listed articles. If you start in English then go to Knights Templar and click "Edit links" under "Languages" in the left pane (assuming your account has default language settings). Then you can add the Amharic page at Wikidata. You can also start in Amharic. The Amharic articles aren't currently connected to Wikidata so it works a little differently but should still be easy when you know the name of the English articles (remember to avoid the redirect). The connection between the pages is stored at Wikidata and only has to be made once. The link to start can both say "Edit links" and "Add links". PrimeHunter (talk) 20:39, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

@The Supermind: If you have a "More" menu with a "Wikidata item" option then I guess you enabled Advanced mode in Settings. That works when the article already has a Wikidata item. That means you have to start in English in your examples. Many help pages and helpers assume you use the desktop version of the site. You can switch to that on "Desktop" at the bottom of pages. Switch back on "Mobile view". The mobile version is mainly designed with readers in mind. Many editors prefer the desktop version even on a smartphone screen but you may have to do some zooming in and out. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:56, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

MarieYolette You will need to contact Google for information on Google search results and knowledge graphs; Wikipedia is not involved with that directly, and has no interest in enhancing search results. I assume you are asking because you want to write about yourself or someone you know. A person merits a Wikipedia article if they receive significant coverage in independent reliable sources that have chosen on their own to write about them, showing how they meet the special Wikipedia definition of a notable person. @MarieYolette: Wikipedia (and most sites running mediawiki) have a fairly comprehensive API which allows you to access information from pages and perform various actions, see mw:API for the documentation. Google uses the API to collect information from various wikipedia articles, then presents that to users doing a search. The exact details of how google chooses what to present to searchers is known only to google, but that's the general idea. 192.76.8.74 (talk) 18:09, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

@MarieYolette: Only a text paragraph ending with a Wikipedia link can be assumed to be taken from Wikipedia. Google may have gathered other content like images and data fields from unspecified sources. We get many complaints about wrong images and data when Google didn't actually get it from Wikipedia. You have included an image of one of the artist's works, claiming it as your "Own work" and that it was gifted to you. If the artist did indeed gift his copyright in the work to you, as well as the physical artwork, you will need to provide evidence of this. Maproom (talk) 22:46, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

AFC decline notification to wrong user?

@Lightbluerain: the {{subst:submit}} syntax causes the template code to substitute the username of the submitter to be added to the submission. This fooled me when I tried to help another user. I thought it would add a submission box that would invite that user to submit the draft, but instead it submitted the draft in my name. If you wish to submit a draft on behalf of another user, use {{subst:submit|other user's name}}.-Arch dude (talk) 18:08, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

Maya cave sites

A Copy Edit template message has been added to the Maya cave sites page. The issues regarding coherence, citations, and grammar are extensive enough that they would require a complete overhaul of the page. Any suggestions as to procedures in a case like this would be appreciated.

Shenrichs, what are you hoping to achieve here? You could try to fix some of the problems yourself. You could also add a more detailed explanation of the problems with the article to the talk page. The article was tagged with Template:Copy edit in August and some copyediting has been done since then. You could also investigate projects like Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors which have different criteria for what kinds of articles they work on. Yaoi Press

I would like this page on my old company, closed in 2012, to be removed. Someone is posting libelous and untrue statements on the page to defame me. See WP:PROD or WP:AFD for instructions how to nominate a page for deletion. Note that this does not constitute an automatic guarantee that the page will be deleted, only initiates a discussion. Sorting table duplicates & splits cells

Hello fellow editors

When you sort this table: Wind_power_in_South_Australia#Wind_farm_overview, and sort on the "Wind Farm" column, the cells that were joined come apart and their names get duplicated. Is there a way to keep the Wind Farm stuck together and sort the other parts, such as the installed capacity? DiamondIIIXX (talk) 23:25, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

@DiamondIIIXX: No. All cells with rowspan get duplicated and remain duplicated as soon as a table is sorted by any column. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:47, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

@DiamondIIIXX: The only way is if it's a single row where the last columns have multiple lines in the same cell. Those columns would sort by the first line in the cell (or by a sortkey if one is added). PrimeHunter (talk) 01:17, 5 September 2021 (UTC)
