editLatin Wikipedia
editFor the past few days every time I open Wikipedia, it is the Latin version. I am using the same shortcut on my desktop. If I type in Wikipedia.org instead of using the shortcut and type in a search term on the home page, the result is in Latin unless I specifically choose the English version before typing in the search term. I haven't seen so much Latin since I took that class in high school. What's wrong? 96.19.244.124 (talk) 02:13, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- https://www.wikipedia.org is the common entry for all Wikipedia languages. The search box has a language selector which says "LA" for Latin. Change it to "EN" for English. If you always want the English Wikipedia then I suggest to change your shortcut to https://en.wikipedia.org, or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search if you prefer a page with more search options. Company logos
editThe logo on the page for the company I work for is out of date. I want to update it with the new one, but I think it’s a non-free image. External people/companies are required to gain permission from us to use the logo on their website, so I’m guessing this means it’s non-free… Can anyone suggest what I’m best doing? We need to get the logo updated because people keep using incorrect branding. — Preceding unsigned comment added by James nsg group (talk • contribs) 09:28, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- James nsg group, which page are you asking about? Logos are generally uploaded to Wikipedia under a claim of fair use, there are some instructions at Wikipedia:Upload/Uploadtext/en-nonfree-logo. TSventon (talk) 09:39, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- I'm guessing it's not NSG (group)? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 11:12, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- It's for the Pilkington company page James nsg group (talk) 08:02, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
- @James nsg group, Pilkington? Based on the logo at [1], upper left, that looks about right to me. What logo do you think it should be changed to? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:23, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Gråbergs Gråa Sång I don't know how to tag this, but shouldn't the editor change their username? 71.228.112.175 (talk) 05:32, 14 August 2022 (UTC)
- Actually, if they are, say, James from Nippon Sheet Glass, their username is right per policy, see WP:ISU. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:03, 14 August 2022 (UTC)

Wikipedia's Assessment Period
editHello,
We as Monty Mobile the company we have contracted with an intermediate agency that writes content for Wikipedia called wikiprofessionals and they claim that the assessment period is 4 months and if we are not active through out this period the page will be terminated and we will be banned for 2 years I would like to know if this information is legit.
Best Regards, 46.227.252.146 (talk) 12:29, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- "Wikiprofessionals" is already banned. How much did you pay them, and which articles did they claim to have written? -- Hoary (talk) 12:45, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- Note that a ban is the most severe category of restriction that can be imposed at Wikipedia. Enforcement of a ban is done by all Wikipedia editors who choose to help: there are about 100,000 active editors in any given 30-day period. Any edit of any type by a banned editor anywhere in Wikipedia can and should be reverted by any editor on sight, without discussion or appeal. If this organization somehow succeeds in sneaking a page in for you, no matter how good it is, we will delete it when we find out. Do not pay them. -Arch dude (talk) 13:22, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- If you're worried about an article on the company, it's unlikely it will be creation-protected after just one deletion. Your company/its agents wouldn't be blocked/banned, but as noted the company you hired is legitimately banned and so their efforts will be undone regardless of the quality of their writing. If your intent was to use Wikipedia to advertize, you'd be wasting your money regardless of what PR firm you hired. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v a little blue Bori 14:13, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- If your company meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability, we could have an article about you. Irrespective of who created the article, it would not belong to you, would not be controlled by you, would not be for your benefit except incidentally, would not necessarily say what you wanted it to say, and should be based almost entirely on what people unconnected with you have chosen to publish about your company (favorable or unfavorable), not on what you say or want to say. ColinFine (talk) 15:45, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- I will note that Draft:Monty Mobile has been deleted twice, once for being a blatant advertisement. Please be aware that no article will be accepted unless the article demonstrates that the company is notable as defined here. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 16:59, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
Real name shows up in metadata of fair use image
editHi, so I uploaded a fair-use image to Wikipedia, but when I scrolled down, the metadata shows my real name in the author’s section. How can I hide and fix this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by SchinLBL (talk • contribs) 13:30, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- SchinLBL, see Wikipedia:Requests for oversight. TSventon (talk) 13:45, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- @SchinLBL: first, use an image editing program on your computer to modify the metadata on a copy of the image. Take out your name and put in the real copyright and/or trademark info. Next, upload this modified image as an update to the existing file. After you do this, you can request oversight to completely remove the old version of the file. -Arch dude (talk) 14:22, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
Username
editI just created a wiki account and the username for some reason does not have the correct space in between the the words (HMYYachts) - Should be HMY Yachts.
How do I change that?
Thanks, Scott HMYYachts (talk) 14:27, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- As that is clearly the name of a company, you cannot use that name neither with, nor without a space - please see your talk page - Arjayay (talk) 14:32, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- Information about changing usernames can be found at WP:RENAME. However, it seems your name seems to indicate you represent a company, in which case you will need to see the username policy and probably the page regarding managing conflicts of interest. Advertising an edit drive
editHey, so the WikiProject Vital Articles just make a new drive called 30 kB drive that promotes expanding short articles, and I don't know how to publicize the drive besides messaging on user talk pages. I've announced the drive at the Wikipedia:Community bulletin board, so what should I do next? CactiStaccingCrane (talk) 15:35, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- @CactiStaccingCrane Welcome to Help Desk! Two places that can be worthwhile to advertise are WP:SIGNPOST newspaper and MediaWiki talk:Watchlist-messages for site wide announcements. Additionally, pinging specific WikiProjects might be useful. Hope that provides some helpful starting points. ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 18:27, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
References
editHow do I add the reference number to the relevant word in the article Napoleon Distelmans (talk) 15:53, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- There is a page dedicated to helping you cite sources — see Help:Referencing_for_beginners.

banner helpful. rbstrachan (talk) 16:02, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
Sagat (rapper)
editFirst of all I am Faustin M Lenon Jr. who is the actual writer of Funk Dat and I am also Jump Chico Slamm which is the name I use for my production entity. As I look at the wikipedia page Sagat (rapper) You actually have a picture of someone else. Upon clicking on the picture it leads to another artist Trinidad James. I hate the fact that throughout the years all I have ever tried to do is have my information updated to reflect the truth.. And still somehow it seems like there are still extreme failures on Wikipedia.
Please Fix this!!!! All you have to do is use ANY of the pictures from Sagat, Jump Chico Slamm, or Faustin M Lenon Jr. Kerumino (talk) 16:34, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- Courtesy link: Sagat (rapper) - the article does not have any picture that I can see. 199.208.172.35 (talk) 16:46, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Kerumino Sagat (rapper) does not currently have a picture. So far as I can tell, there has never been a photo included in that article. Are you by any chance talking about the Google Knowledge Graph? If so, Wikipedia has no control over what Google chooses to display in their knowledge graph. If you scroll down to the bottom of the knowledge graph there should be a link for you to click to alert Google to the problem. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 16:49, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- And just for further reference, here is the pre-written canned answer to this sort of question:
- Are you by any chance referring to a photo or text shown to the right of a Google search? Google's Knowledge Graph uses a wide variety of sources. There may be a text paragraph ending with "Wikipedia" to indicate that particular text was copied from Wikipedia. An image and other text before or after the Wikipedia excerpt may be from sources completely unrelated to Wikipedia. We have no control over how Google presents our information, but Google's Knowledge Graph has a "Feedback" link where anyone can mark a field as wrong. The same feedback facility is also provided on Bing and some other search engines. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 16:51, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- I never uploaded a photo.
- It is the google knowledge graph that uses another person's picture
- Do you have any suggestions? Kerumino (talk) 17:05, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Kerumino, if you look at the bottom right corner of the knowledge panel on google, you should see a tiny link that says "Feedback" (at least if you're on laptop). Try using that, it may work. Or the link/button next to it. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:17, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- The main suggestion is given above - complain to Google.
- But there is another possibility that might work: if you arrange that Wikipedia's article about you has a picture of you, then it is possible that Google will use that picture, rather than picking up the wrong one from somewhere else. (We can't guarantee what Google will do, but I think that's quite likely).
- In order to do that you will need whoever owns the copyright to a picture (which will probably not be you unless either it's a selfie or you have a contract with the photographer that says you own the copyright) to upload the the picture to Commons, releasing it under a suitable license (which will allow anybody to reuse it freely. They can do this using the Upload wizard.
- Once they have uploaded the picture to Commons, then you can make an edit request on Talk:Sagat (rapper), to add the picture to the article.
- I'm afraid this is somewhat convoluted: images are in Wikipedia, mostly because of copyright concerns. ColinFine (talk) 17:17, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
List that marked as a WP:NOTGALLERY
editIf a list is marked as a WP:NOTGALLERY, can it be revamped to include descriptions? SpinnerLaserzthe2nd (talk) 19:52, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- Hello, SpinnerLaserzthe2nd. Only if it can be edited to comply with Wikipedia:Stand-alone lists. If you provide the name of the list, you will get a more detailed response. Cullen328 (talk) 19:57, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- Let’s say if I find a flag list that consists of only a gallery, do I had to add the details? SpinnerLaserzthe2nd (talk) 19:59, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- SpinnerLaserzthe2nd, a list article consisting of images but no text is not encyclopedic. Cullen328 (talk) 02:29, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
- Let’s say if I find a flag list that consists of only a gallery, do I had to add the details? SpinnerLaserzthe2nd (talk) 19:59, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

- This editor has been blocked for violating WP:No legal threats. – Muboshgu (talk) 20:09, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
- @Muboshgu Just out of curiosity, what does Wikipedia construe as a legal threat? After reading WP:NLT, I don't see an obvious one in @Bradfallonesq's message. It's demanding, condescending and rude, sure, but I don't see a threat of legal action... Does the implication of legal action constitute a legal threat?I'm not trying to say he shouldn't've been blocked or that what you did was wrong, I'm just genuinely curious how you and other administrators interpret the term

- On User talk:Bradfallonesq, the OP wrote "... we are asking you to remove all postings from your sites. If you do not make this happen in a reaonable amount of time (3 days) you will be hearing from our legal department ...". Maproom (talk) 21:38, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

- A perfectly fine block, but do we really need to use a mugshot in the infobox on Delvis Dutton? —Wasell(T) 🌻 06:33, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, the infobox image is rather crap and inappropriate unless he was known primarily as a criminal. What seems to have happened here is a bad case of "Is this the only free image we could find?" correctly NLT blocked, but the infobox image is problematic.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 07:12, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
- I've removed the infobox image File:Delvis Dutton (cropped).jpg because it is missing evidence of permission on Commons. If it is a standard US police department mugshot it is probably copyrighted, per previous discussions on this issue.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 07:17, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
- I agree with this file being removed. The claim of "own work" made by the uploader is almost certainly incorrect and the State of Georgia isn't one of the US states which releases works by its employees into the public domain. This could've just be a good faith misunderstanding by someone regarding c:COM:L and c:COM:Own work, but it also could be a WP:BLPCOI or WP:RGW issue as well since there's a entire category at c:Category:Delvis Dutton filled with similar images and other files also being erroneously claimed as "own work". The block for the NLT was warranted, but it might also be a good idea for some admins to monitor this article for awhile because there's probably been some COI editing going over the years and there probably be more attempts to add questionably licensed images to the article. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:32, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
- I have this article permanently watchlisted, since I created it. – Muboshgu (talk) 17:18, 13 August 2022 (UTC)

- Indeed. The NLT block was merited, as a clear legal threat was made, and not withdrawn. However, I remind everyone that WP:DOLT is also proper advice after such a block. People usually have a reason to make legal threats, it's not a kid playing a prank, there is often some legitimate thing that needs monitoring. While legal threats cannot be tolerated, we also need to follow our own WP:BLP rules. --Jayron32 14:15, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
- The legal threat said "all postings" ... "he wants to permanently remove his wikipedia entirely" (the "he" allegedly being Dutton himself). The user was blanking the personal life section, which is reliably sourced. There's nothing for us to address there. Dutton isn't the "victim", the person he pleaded guilty to stalking is. I do agree though with the removal of the mugshot, I should have looked into that myself. DOLT has good advice, we should be aware that these cases can turn out the other way. – Muboshgu (talk) 17:01, 13 August 2022 (UTC)
- Looking at the sources in the article, an afd may not be a terrible idea, with the WP:BLPREQUESTDELETE thrown in. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:11, 14 August 2022 (UTC)

Unexplained blank line
editIn General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, there is a blank line after the first nav box. I think it is coming from {{Sri Lanka Armed Forces Educational Institutions}}
, because if I switch the order, the blank follows after this template. But in Sri Lanka Military Academy, there is no blank line, so I'm really not sure. MB 22:20, 11 August 2022 (UTC)
