@0mtwb9gd5wx: the documentation for the hatnote template you'll be wanting is at Template:Translated page. Categories are added near the bottom with the wikicode [[Category:Some category]]. See MOS:LAYOUT for where each thing is supposed to go. Anytime I forget how to do something here, or have to learn for the first time, I just edit a page that does the thing I want to do, copy the relevant wikicode, and back out of the editor without publishing. Hi GoingBatty. Thumbnail images shouldn't be set to a fixed pixel width per WP:THUMBSIZE because it forces everyone to see the image the same way regardless of their user preferences or the device they're using. It's better to resize thumbnail images using scaling as explained in WP:UPRIGHT. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:31, 13 May 2023 (UTC)

@Bazza 7: You added an empty |upright= parameter which is equivalent to adding |upright=0.75 but is confusing because it doesn't specify a scaling factor. Personally, I think the original default size of the image is fine and it doesn't need to be 0.75 times smaller, which is what you did. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:11, 13 May 2023 (UTC)

@Marchjuly: thanks for pointing out MOS:UPRIGHT's warning about not specifying a value for upright. I've added 0.75, which makes the portrait-orientated image's height about the same as its width would be if it were landscape. I agree with the OP that it ought to be smaller than if left unaltered; that may be exacerbated by the fact it sandwiches text between itself and the infobox. I'm not intending to challenge any further alterations in either direction. Bazza (talk) 13:46, 13 May 2023 (UTC)

Archiving on talk pages

Hello! So currently, my talk page is archived with ClueBot III. I must've put the archiving in the way of month/year although I don't remember because it was literally years ago. However, now its getting really tedious and annoying, to the point where the page looks kind of messy as the list of month/year is getting long. I was wondering how / if I can change the archive to a different type. Specifically this type of template. Unfortunately I am terrible with coding and some of this code really confuses me at times. You already changed to numbered archives.[1] There hasn't been anything to archive since then. Do you want to go back to month/year? It gives very small archives for your talk page. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:30, 13 May 2023 (UTC)

@PrimeHunter: Actually, the way you do your archives was what I was trying to achieve. So if that's what you mean then yes please, the smaller the better! Willard Scott

On the page for Willard Scott the first paragraph calls him a serial killer and rapist. I'm pretty certain someone is messing with this. I find it unbelievable that someone in the public eye for most of his 80 years on Earth and noted as a TV personality could have also been known as a serial killer/rapist. Looks like someone got by your woke censors and altered his page.

I don't know what you mean by "woke censors", but anyway the article history shows that this was just some very recent attempt by a bored schoolchild or similar to impress their friends, or similar. Skynxnex has already reverted it. -- Hoary (talk) 06:40, 13 May 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Maevenowotny and welcome. If by "own page" you mean an article in the main encyclopaedia about yourself, then that's frowned upon, for reasons discussed at WP:AUTO. If you mean "create a user page to tell other editors what I'm interested in contributing", then just click on your currently red-linked Username and proceed: see WP:UPYES. Happy editing! iffy editor

Special:Contributions/86.106.2.67 has made quite a few edits, and all the ones i've checked have been the uncited addition (or alteration) of a date (sometimes changing the date format, including putting the date or edit summary in Spanish). Is someone willing to fact check 30 or more edits? If appropriate, is there a way to undo all of an editor's edits at once instead of one by one? --173.67.42.107 (talk) 11:34, 13 May 2023 (UTC)

Suggested languages

Hello!

Although I’m Greek, English is my preferred language and I always read the English Wikipedia, however, I speak altogether four languages and if an article that I read in English exists in any of these languages, I often want to switch and read it in another language.

My problem is that the “Suggested languages” section cannot be edited and I get randomly a list of languages which I don’t speak. (I guess randomly because I can't see how Bulgarian eor Macedonian or French hav ended up in the preferred language list!)

Is there any way to get in the section “Suggested languages” only these four languages I speak, assuming of course that the corresponding article that I read does exist in one of the four languages of my choice?

Entropy1963 The interlanguage links interface is managed by Wikidata. As far as I know there is no way to filter languages in the selection, other than by performing a search each time. Sungodtemple (talk • contribs) 16:42, 13 May 2023 (UTC)

Hello, Entropy. This is controlled by mw:Universal Language Selector/Compact Language Links, and that seems to have some instructions for managing suggested languages. I haven't tried it myself. ColinFine (talk) 17:31, 13 May 2023 (UTC)

Please replace wrong photograph on my wikipedia page.

You have a photograph of another person on my wikipedia page. The photo of the bald gentleman sitting is not me. That is the son of Charles Schwab (same name as me). Please remove and replace with an alternate appropriate photo of me. Thank you.

Our article Michael Schwab (designer) does not have a photo, and never has had. I guess you may be referring to what Google displays when someone searches for you. We have no control over that (though we get frequent complaints about it). Maproom (talk) 18:24, 13 May 2023 (UTC)

One way to address the problem is to arrange for someone to take a photo of you and then for them (as the copyright holder) to upload it to Wikimedia Commons with a suitable free licence. Then add it to the article (or ask here for someone to add it.) Maproom (talk) 18:28, 13 May 2023 (UTC)

Are you by any chance referring to a photo or text shown to the right of a Google search? Google's Knowledge Graph uses a wide variety of sources. There may be a text paragraph ending with "Wikipedia" to indicate that particular text was copied from Wikipedia. An image and other text before or after the Wikipedia excerpt may be from sources completely unrelated to Wikipedia. We have no control over how Google presents our information, but Google's Knowledge Graph has a "Feedback" link where anyone can mark a field as wrong. The same feedback facility is also provided on Bing and some other search engines.

If the Wikipedia article Michael Schwab (designer) does get a photo then we have no way of knowing or controlling whether Google will display it in their Knowledge Graph. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:45, 13 May 2023 (UTC)

Going dotty over dots

Here South Hams under 'Politics' I've updated with recent election results. The infographic has an arrangement of coloured dots to represent the distribution of seats which I hoped would rearrange themselves when the new numbers were input but sadly no. I cannot see any code for this but it looks like a standard wiki thing. It really must change, I'd be grateful if someone could show me or fix it. Thanks very much. @Thelisteninghand: That seating chart is not generated by Wikipedia. It is just an image file File:United_Kingdom_South_Hams_District_Council_2019.svg. There is a note on the image page that it was generated from https://parliamentdiagram.toolforge.org/parlitest.php, but I am not clear on how that tool works. Question about moving/renaming pages

Hello,

I was just wondering what will happen to a Google Knowledge Panel if a page is renamed to something else? Will it disappear? Here is the link in question: Eva Doležalová and it would be changed to "Eva Vik."

Please let me know if anyone has any input regarding this topic.

@Cias94: A Google Knowledge Panel is made entirely by Google on their own initiative with no control by Wikipedia. Some of the content may or may not be copied from Wikipedia. If there is a text paragraph ending with a link to a Wikipedia article then that paragraph was copied from Wikipedia but other parts of the Knowledge Panel may be from other unnamed sources. I don't know what Google is likely to do when they discover a Wikipedia page has been renamed but it shouldn't be a factor in Wikipedia decisions. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:36, 13 May 2023 (UTC)

@Cias94: a page move leaves a redirect here on Wikipedia. We have no insight as to what Google does, but it is reasonable to assume they will follow the redirect is someone searches on the old name. -Arch dude (talk) 20:57, 13 May 2023 (UTC)

Edits that don't stick

Also, the source you gave only supports some of the material you added: I don't see a source for his family life.

Also, you have copied promotional wording from a non-independent source. "brings extensive coaching and playing experience". This is problematic in three different ways. First, it is probably a copyright violation. Secondly it is putting evaluative language in Wikipedia's voice, which is never permissible in an article. Thirdly, while such language may be acceptable as an acknowledged direct quote ("John Doe said in the Daily Beasth that '...'), that would only be the case for an WP:independent source. Fort Bend Christian Academy's news is not independent of Black, and may only be used in limited ways: see WP:PRIMARY.

In fact, I have tagged the article for inadequate sourcing as it is: the only possibly independent sources are the two Washington Post articles; but they are at least partly based on interviews, and therefore are not adequate in themselves. Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources.
