January 12

edit

Ref number 15 is in red - is the publisher and date correctly done? I think I got it all wrong. Please fix. thanks 175.38.42.62 (talk) 00:00, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed. It did not like a range of years so I took out the 2nd one. If you still want both years maybe put in title field? BlueWren0123 (talk) 00:11, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It now looks a bit odd with the publication date earlier than the event date. What do think is the best solution? BlueWren0123 (talk) 00:17, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! 175.38.42.62 (talk) 05:13, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Dr. King

edit

Why isn't Dr. King's wiki page listed as Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. his entire name, as he holds a doctorate. 24.121.72.18 (talk) 02:48, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This is simply a style guideline Wikipedia uses on all pages – unless a title is used to form the unambiguous name by which the subject is clearly best known (as in Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa or Father Damien), it is not included in a page title. See WP:TITLESINTITLES. Tollens (talk) 02:52, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please help me.

How do I create an article? Also, I'm sorry if I sound not that intelligent but it's my first time on Wikipedia. Solar Lunar-12 (talk) 03:08, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Solar Lunar-12 please see WP:YFA. But I would caution you that writing an article is a very difficult task and I would recommend spending time improving existing articles first, so you get used to how Wikipedia works, our policies, guidelines, and style. Qcne (talk) 09:07, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind I think I know how now.

Refernce number 14 is all wrong and in a red colour - i have tried but failed to get it right. Please fix if you are able. Thank you175.38.42.62 (talk) 05:13, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You have the date as 20024. If you change that to the correct year, the problem should go away. RudolfRed (talk) 05:24, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you 175.38.42.62 (talk) 06:01, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
How can we help you not make this recurring mistake? You seem to write the year incorrectly quite often. What would help you not do this? Qcne (talk) 09:06, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This forum is meant to provide occasional help, so that a user can learn from their request and going forward be able to do things themselves. We don't mind helping you, but at some point you need to learn from your mistakes. 331dot (talk) 09:08, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
331dot, as a former professional editor and proofreader, I am well aware that spotting typos like can be quite difficult for some people without an aptitude for it, even ignoring any barriers like poor eyesight, dyslexia and inadequate display devices that might be in play. The former fad for the whole word method of teaching reading, inimical to spotting single-character errors, can also have a lasting legacy.
We are familiar with this long-time contributor; generally it takes less time to just correct such reported problems than to try cajoling her into doing something beyond her capacity. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 51.198.104.88 (talk) 11:13, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough, as I was not familiar this, but I wonder if a mentor might be beneficial for this user- someone specific who can review their edits. 331dot (talk) 13:27, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that spotting typos and other smol errors is not necessarily equally easy for everyone, but when there's an error message right next to the typo saying invalid date it should generally be possible for a person to figure out the problem. Noting for completeness that not all invalid dates are equally trivial, but a year centuries in the future is on the more trivial side.
And yes, it's much quicker to fix these errors than try to teach this contributor, but another option would be leaving the affected articles in Category:CS1 errors: dates (228) for gnomes to fix organically, instead of posting about each of them at this venue without ever showing signs of improvement. The Mayor of Centre Hall, Pennsylvania is LeDon Young.

edit

The article lists the prior Mayor Ray Hankinson. Elected in November of 2020, and taking office in 2021, LeDon Young is now the Borough's Mayor. 2601:98A:4002:DFA0:0:0:0:9919 (talk) 10:11, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome to edit the article to make this update yourself, or if you don't wish to do that, post on the article talk page, Talk:Centre Hall, Pennsylvania and ask editors that more closely follow that article to do so. 331dot (talk) 10:14, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Option to change language

edit

I came to read this article : Hamzah Fansuri It seems to me there is no option to change a language! Sometimes I read in English but I need to read in Arabic language as well To go to translation tool, it takes a long time or not working. As much as I know , there is a shift change for languages any time It looks like nowadays the choice of changing languages is missing. I want someone or a moderator here help me and fix the page errors or something is not working. MohammadAA33 (talk) 12:16, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You can read equivalent articles in other languages' Wikipedias by using the "Languages" section at the foot of the left hand menu bar. David Biddulph (talk) 12:45, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
MohammadAA33. en Wikipedia has recently adopted a new skin (appearance), there is information on how to choose the old skin at Wikipedia:Vector 2022. Foreign language versions can be accessed by clicking on the word languages at top right, rather than bottom left as in the previous version. The other language versions are written by editors, rather than automatically translated, so Hamzah Fansuri does not currently have an Arabic version. Draft:Hector Carlos Lora

edit

Hi! I would like someone to review the Draft:Hector Carlos Lora and give some pointers for improvements. Other editors have mentioned it would likely be denied as it currently is. What are areas where I can improve it for approval? Thank you so much! LMPAJ (talk) 14:59, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @LMPAJ. The key thing is if Hector passes the WP:NPOLITICIAN threshold. You will note Mayors aren't inherently notable, so you'd need to prove notability by showing significant press coverage. I can see a lot of sources from North Jersey Media Group, but a lot of these are trivial mentions or routine coverage. I've had a look at the other sources and they suffer from the same issue.
Are there any sources that talk about Hector (not interviews with him) that are from major regional or national newspapers/TV? Qcne (talk) 16:59, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Qcne! Thank you so much for reviewing! The North Jersey Media Group serves Bergen, Passaic, Morris, and Essex counties, so it is a significant regional newspaper in North Jersey. Here are some articles from them that are more focused:
  1. Passaic Mayor Hector Lora Invites Homeless to Third Annual Super Bowl Party (this one was also covered by News12 from the Bronx here)
  2. Lora promises to work for unity as mayor of Passaic
  3. Acting mayor grapples with Passaic's legacy of scandals
  4. Passaic's Dignity House for homeless residents recognized by Gov. Murphy
Additionally, I found substantial coverage from Univision, an international news outlet:
  1. Hector Lora, El Dominicano Que Fue Elegido Como Alcalde de Passaic, Nueva Jersey
  2. Hector Lora Habla Sobre su Lucha Contra La Corrupcion y de Como se Acerca a la Comunidad para Escuchar Sus Peticiones
  3. Héctor Carlos Lora Dominicano Alcalde de Passaic, New Jersey rescata desamparados (this one also was covered by Daily Voice here)
As a supplemental resource, there's a profile from Good Chronicle:
  1. Hector Carlos Lora – Making a Difference as the Second Dominican-American Mayor of the City of Passaic
Notably, he was reelected in 2021 with a record 88% of the votes, indicating his substantial impact and recognition within a community that is over 70% Latino (which explains the coverage from Univision). I would also like to highlight that the regular coverage of Passaic's initiatives by North Jersey Media Group are a reflection of Mayor Lora's policies.
Let me know if this is enough! If it's not, then it might just be time to give up the article. Thank you for all your help!!! LMPAJ (talk) 18:57, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@LMPAJ: I don't think we can know whether the regular coverage is a reflection of the mayor's policies and/or a reflection of the mayor's press office and/or something else. We just write articles based on what the reliable published source have written. GoingBatty (talk) 19:33, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am referring to the regular coverage mentioned by Qcne in their first reply to the thread, which are part of the current draft, rather than just general regular coverage of Passaic. Hope that helps! LMPAJ (talk) 19:49, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, LMPAJ. I don't see anywhere where Qcne referred to "regular coverage", and I'm not sure that that would be relevant anyway. What Qcne was talking about is significant coverage, as opposed to trivial or routine mentions. ColinFine (talk) 20:45, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
An article on the incumbent mayor of a town with 70,537 people might not satisfy WP:NPOLITICIAN. Unless you can find significant coverage of the subject in the popular press, as editor Qcne has suggested, it is unlikely that the draft article would pass WP:AfC, and that an accepted draft would survive a community review at WP:AfD.
If I can offer an alternative approach:
I hope this offers some food for thought! IgnatiusofLondon (talk) 14:06, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Level 4+ headings

edit

I was looking at Hamilton High School (Chandler, Arizona) today and noticed that some of the sections under athletics (such as "football" and the following "history" section) have fourth- and fifth-level headings, but there seems to be no visual distinction between these. They are reflected properly in the ToC and HTML, but have the same font size and weight, which makes it visually difficult to see the hierarchy while looking at the article. Is there anything to do here? Is there a general guideline that this many nested headings is discouraged? Is it worth splitting out, say, the athletics section to its own heading? LittlePuppers (talk) 21:56, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@LittlePuppers: Up to level 6 is possible. "level 7" syntax makes a level 6 heading where the header text starts and ends with '='. Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Layout#Headings and sections does not discourage level 5 and 6. They look the same as level 4 in the default skin Vector 2022 and the previous default Vector legacy but they are different in MonoBook and Timeless at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering. Reusers of our content may also make them different. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:48, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I realize they're possible and didn't see anything obviously against them. I guess the two Vector skins were the only ones I looked at, I'm not a huge fan of them looking the same though. LittlePuppers (talk) 23:14, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@LittlePuppers: So how do you suggest they should look? Bazza (talk) 10:29, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Level 4, 5 and 6 are normal size text but just bold in Vector. Level 4 and 5 are larger in MonoBook and Timeless. The English Wikipedia could change header styling in Vector but level 5 and 6 are rarely used and I don't see a need. You can change it for yourself with code like below in your CSS. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:58, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
div#content h4 {font-size:116%}
div#content h5 {font-size:108%}
div#content h6 {font-size:100%}

Level b (bold non-header for comparison)

@Bazza 7: I have no clue, I am very lacking in design skills. PrimeHunter's suggestion seems better than nothing. (It's obviously not a huge issue, though.) LittlePuppers (talk) 17:08, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For completeness, in Minerva, subheading levels five and six render as normal text, neither boldfaced nor embiggened. For this reason, I prefer the "bold non-header" (newline + initial ;).
I've seen level five in the wild (History of China), which already connotes to me that perhaps a restructure is indicated. Level six even more so: it's probably better to flatten or reorganise the prose than to customise header stylings at this point. Folly Mox (talk) 17:26, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The semicolon markup is not for making bold text or pseudo headings. Don't do newline + initial ;. See MOS:PSEUDOHEAD.
Trappist the monk (talk) 17:40, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I see the line-initial semicolon markup is reserved for <dt>...</dt> and the MOS guidance recommends boldfacing through standard markup for pseudoheadings. Fair enough, and thanks for the correction. Folly Mox (talk) 18:32, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How do i create Page

edit

I want to add new pages, how do i create it? Industrial Tools (talk) 22:18, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Industrial Tools, see WP:Your first article - but note that writing an article is hard, and that you should not try to write an article for the point of promoting something. LittlePuppers (talk) 22:27, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your guidelines. Industrial Tools (talk) 22:31, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If i want to make a Page of a company and write about their legacy and details about it. will that be taken as a point of promoting ? Industrial Tools (talk) 22:35, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Industrial Tools, writing an article about a company won't be taken as inherently promotional. However, if the company in question is named "Industrial Tools" (or if you happen to be associated with any companies named Industrial Tools, even if you don't plan on writing about them), you should first file a request to change your username.
Before writing the article, please read WP:NCORP to check the company is notable enough to have an article.
Also, if you are at all associated with the company, such as as an employee, please read about conflicts-of-interest and disclose your relation (If you're paid to edit Wikipedia, please also read WP:PAID). Please let me know if you have any questions. Sincerely, Novo TapeMy Talk Page 23:08, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please note that Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost entirely interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources. @Brandonsmall1: You're going to want to read Your first article, and I would not recommend doing so as a new user until you've had experience editing preexisting pages on here and what policies users are expected to follow on here. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 23:51, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
