  • M^2 where? The surface of the earth? Need to say so. I'd like to see units on everything personally, but the information is there regardless. Noodle snacks (talk) 12:37, 25 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak Oppose Nezzadar I really don't like the black text on the dark grey at the top of the image. As it is now, that text is barely readable on one of the two monitors I use. Concider lightening the grey.

File:Fair use image - see below for link to file
Original - File:Carlos-Smith.jpg - The Black Power salute was a noted human rights protest and one of the most overtly political statements in the 110 year history of the modern Olympic Games. Tommie Smith (center) and John Carlos (right) showing the raised fist after the 200m in the 1968 Summer Olympics, while Silver medallist Peter Norman from Australia (left) wears an Olympic Project for Human Rights badge to show his support for the two U.S. athletes
Reason
Bit of an experiment to see what others think of this concept. Some images are ‘fair use’ meaning they can only be used with certain restrictions. I don’t think this should exclude them from being VPs even though they can’t be displayed as images in the gallery, have restricted article usage, etc (FPC would be unlikely to allow this though). Some of these images have huge EV, far higher than most of the 'historical' images that get voted in at FPC or here. The restricted use probably also won’t please those who think VP value is measured by how many articles an image is used in, as for many it may be a single article. Anyway, as a first try I thought I’d nominate this canonical Black power salute image from the 1968 Mexico Olympics (came to mind after I watched the excellent 2008 Australian documentary Salute last night - get your hands on a copy if you can). Reasons for nominating beyond that are pretty obvious. Vote or comment away.

Thought I explained this, and a possible way of breathing some life back into VP, but obviously a waste of time, so Withdrawn. --jjron (talk) 05:38, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

People who would like to search VPs to reuse will not find fair-use images valuable. ZooFari 22:14, 12 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Original - SUNY System Administration Building, the administrative headquarters of the State University of New York, located on Broadway in Albany, New York, United States. For much of its history, it was the Albany headquarters of the Delaware and Hudson Railway. In the 1970s, the SUNY administrative offices moved in after the building had stood vacant for a few years. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
Reason
One of the most iconic older building in the city of Albany, New York (being built before all other skyscrapers in the city). At one time it represented the strength of the railroads. Today, it represents the strength of the State University of New York and the importance of cheap, public, higher education in New York and the United States. Exceptional piece of architecture, dominating addition to the skyline since its erection, and respected as such, having been added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

Original - In Brewster, Cape Cod, Massachusetts (on vacation), Anne Sullivan and Helen Keller.
Reason
It portrays Sullivan doing what she is known for, being Helen Keller's teacher, and, later in her life, translator and companion. With incredible EV, this image is incredible, and without the small size or the quality, would easily succeed at FPC.

  • Comment. It's an elegant and interesting photo, but I'd like to know more about what it's showing (besides the radiation). What is the apparatus, and what is it for? It also might be helpful to explicitly discuss the exposure on the description page: how much light is being produced (and how much power is going through the reactor)? --ragesoss (talk) 15:34, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Original - A lemon shark, with remoras. Lemon sharks are found in tropical and subtropical waters in the Atlantic, and typically grow to around 3 metres in length.
Reason
High quality, sinister image of the species. Valuable, as it shows the animal accompanied by remoras, and the only image in the article. Comfortably our best image of the species. Focus is good, but it is not quite at the technical level required for FPC. Note the image has been in the article longer than it appears as, previously, the same image with a small watermark was used. A version without the in-file credit was then uploaded.
