Description
editThe purpose of this project would be the improvement of articles about baseball umpires through expanding articles, adding references, and removing inappropriate content. The main goal would be to improve the overall quality of the articles, turning stubs into good or even featured articles. AutomaticStrikeout (talk) 16:13, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- Why do you want to start a new group, instead of joining one of these existing groups?
- At the present, there may not be even one umpire biography that has been named as a good article. Many of the articles are only stubs. There is definitely room for significant improvement to these articles, and a focused WikiProject could provide that.

- I would certainly be joining this project if it is created. AutomaticStrikeout (talk) 16:13, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- I would also be highly interested in joining and contributing to this project. Delaywaves • talk 16:47, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- I have done quite a bit of work on umpires, and almost all of these articles are dreadfully behind. I would join this effort for sure.Neonblak talk - 16:58, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Against
edit- A project about one very narrow profession isn't worth making unless it is for all sports officials not just baseball umpires....William 11:54, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Per the reasons I gave below in Discussion; I would support an umpire task force of WP:BASEBALL, but not a separate WikiProject. - Jorgath (talk) (contribs) 13:36, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Discussion
edit- If an umpire project is to be started, would it just focus on baseball or all sports? The latter could work out well, if it's just baseball then a project task force may be better. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 16:56, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- I was just gonna say that when I saw the link on the WP:BASEBALL talk page. – Muboshgu (talk) 17:04, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- I would be willing to expand this to cover all sports officials, although I personally am only really interested in umpires. A task force is also a viable option, provided that it is big enough to give adequate attention to the articles. AutomaticStrikeout (talk) 17:10, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- I don't think that an Umpire Wikiproject makes much sense. If it were meant to cover umpires from all sports, you'd be hard-pressed to agree on guidelines or get the articles to any sort of consistency, based on the differences between all the sports. I strongly urge anything related to umpires to be covered by task forces by their respective sports Wikiprojects (in this specific case, the Baseball Wikiproject). - I think that an Umpire Task Force on WP:BASEBALL is probably a better idea. The problem with expanding to other sports is as noted by Y2kcrazyjoker4 above, and baseball umpires are by the nature of their job supposed to minimize coverage of themselves as opposed to the game (although admittedly many of them fail). I think a task force of WP:BASEBALL covers what need there is, and I'd support the creation of that task force, but I won't support a full separate WikiProject. - Jorgath (talk) (contribs) 04:54, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- It appears that a task force is the best option at this point. How do I go about creating one? AutomaticStrikeout (talk) 15:48, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Start a discussion about it on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Baseball. It doesn't have to be a formal thing at first; the people who volunteered for the project can just coordinate on one of their talk pages until you get it up and running. I don't think there'll be any opposition to that. - Jorgath (talk) (contribs) 19:41, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- I don't think a specialty WP for baseball is going to fly, it should rather be a TF for WP:Baseball. However, a WP:Sports refereeing could be useful. -- 70.49.127.65 (talk) 06:41, 7 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Oops. Apparently someone (like me) forgot to mention here that a task force has already been started. AutomaticStrikeout (talk) 15:24, 7 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
