Hi Rory, generally Wikipedia discourages conflict-of-interest contributing (click on that link for details). That said, I can't imagine anyone objecting to your just listing the nominees and winners of the awards, assuming you provide reliable secondary sources. (Listing the nominees for every category will probably make the main award article over-lengthy, but you might see how the Grammy articles or something do this for a precedent.) Don't be sorry, you're quite right to ask! It's hard for me to tell if the awards are notable enough to need their own page--are you fairly confident that enough secondary sources (at least a few newspapers, etc.) will report on the awards to justify a standalone article? If so, I'd say go ahead.

But I wouldn't worry about COI for just putting up the nominees and winners. On the contrary, you'd be doing us a big favor--thanks for the contribution, Khazar2 (talk) 15:15, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

Energy in Africa

Hello, I am a new contributor to Wikipedia, and am going to work on updating and expanding the Energy in Africa and Energy Policy of Africa articles for a class project. These are not currently listed on the Wikiproject Africa page, although I think they would be a good fit. I am going to add new energy usage statistics from the International Energy Agency and expand information about the different energy resources available across the continent in the Energy in Africa article. In the policy article, I plan to use sources from the UN, World Bank, European Union Joint Research Commission, and Science Direct journal to present an overview of energy initiatives across the continent and how those initiatives have effected the citizens of Africa. Do you have any advice for me in this endeavor? How do you think these articles should best link to the individual country articles, or do you think that this information would be redundant? "chopping block" or "butcher block"

Which is the more common term in African nations? I'm referring to the hunk of wood known at enwp as a butcher block. Is "cutting board" the right term? Are they all the same? I'm trying to figure if it should be called "chopping block", and Google isn't providing conclusive information.

Do you mean the most common phrase used in English-speaking parts of Africa? Most of South Africa, for instance. Most Africans are not native anglophones. bobrayner (talk) 15:27, 5 October 2012 (UTC)

Particularly when it comes to names of everyday objects, I would expect there can be many different answers, depending on which foreigners influenced the particular place: Nigeria, Ghana, and Zimbabwe will probably follow British usage; Côte d'Ivoire, Sénégal, the DRC (fka Zaire), the Congo, Madagascar, etc. will follow the English spoken in France and Belgium; South Africa will follow the English spoken in the Netherlands; North African countries will follow various Arab and Asian influences; almost nobody will follow American English :); etc. Africa is as varied a continent as Europe or Asia. I'd say "butcher['s] block" and "chopping block" are the same to me (though the latter is better in that it is more descriptive, IMO) and much bigger than a "cutting board" (which fits in a dishwasher). —[AlanM1(talk)]— 21:31, 5 October 2012 (UTC)

WikiAfrica request

I can work at this off and on the next few days. As with last time, the bulk of these are a bit too general in their labels ("Cape Town", "Zanzibar", "Serengeti", etc.) to be easily matched with articles, but the species pictures are a big help. I've just started work on matching all those beetle pictures to articles and I've put in more than a dozen already. My pleasure. I'm in bed with a cold at the moment, so sorting through all these gorgeous beetle pics is a pleasant way to pass the day. If you're still collecting case studies, you can check out my user contributions for the day to see what I've included; I'd estimate I've added 40-50 images to beetle articles by now, but I could be overestimating. (Almost all these will have the word "image" in the edit summary). Rename to Carthaginian Empire

Ancient Carthage → Carthaginian Empire – Following the previous discussion in 2008, there was no consensus on renaming the article Ancient Carthage, though an alternative was made to make this article named Carthaginian Empire, in order to distinguish from Carthage city (existing both in ancient and modern times). Trauma in Agbarho

What happened in Agbarho yesterday (1-11-2012) was unprecedentd. A group of young boys were playing cards in an uncompleted building when some members of the task force of Agbarho community invaded the building. They started shooting at random & in the process killed the twin brother of one of the boys playing cards in the building, while the other boys escaped. Realising they've killed someone, the task force took to their heels. The elder brother of the deceased who is a butcher pursued the task force & caught one of them. He bundled him to a popular junction at Agbarho known as( five junction) & slaughtered him in bits. He removed his head & hung it on a stick, cut away his hands & legs & divided it all over the junction. The awful thing was that he cut away his private parts, ate them raw, watered it down with alcohol, after which he set him ablaze. On arrival of the army, the man took to his heels. The army started shooting at him but the bullets were unable to penetrate due to some charms he had all over him. The stray bullets killed about 4 people while others injured were taken to the hospital for treatment. Although there were mixed feelings about the ordeal, the maJority was joyful for what happened to the task force, due to their (task force) appalling activities in the town. rwandan refugees return home, 1996 (History of Rwanda)

specifically quoted from above: "Between June 1996 and June 1997, almost all of the nearly 2 million refugees who had fled to neighbouring countries to escape civil strife returned to Rwanda"

This began in June of 1996 when "unarmed cargo aircraft under United Nations supervision" were allowed by Zaire to "airdrop food and supplies without landing" along the road from the main camp in Zaire to the Rwandan border, thereby allowing most of the refugees there to "walk home without incident" since Zaire would not allow foreign troops on their soil to move them, nor did Zaire have the resources to move them themselves. The number of returning refugees for the first 30 days of the operation was reported as "approximately 970,000" in American news media, with "about 340,000 remaining in the camp" at that time.

• Operation Linda Nchi = has a US flag, and states French involvement, but the infobox only shows US flag and no French flag.
• List of wars 2011-present = has no US flag in the list.

Changing page name

Hi I was wondering if this page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lesothan_literature) could get a title change since the word "Lesothan" does not exist? The proper name for people from Lesotho is "Mosotho" for the singular and "Basotho" for the plural. I did not see a place to change the title, but "Basotho Literature" would be the correct title (or "Sesotho Literature" if you wanted to refer to the culture instead of the people). WikiProject African diaspora's topic is the cultural contributions of people of African descent in places outside Africa. Ghana related articles

A part of Ghana is slowly disappearing from articles and being renamed Akanland. See the edits by MarkMysoe (talk · contribs) and the discussion at WP:BLPN#Nana Akufo-Addo. Dougweller (talk) 17:35, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

Doug, as Mark has pointed out many many times, the only true citizens of Ghana are the Akan and the Ga, and the only true religion is Christianity. All the rest, such as the Ewe, Dagomba, and Fulani, are illegal immigrants and criminals, and the country urgently needs to be cleansed. (See for example the edit history of the Ghana article from last March and April.) I myself am investing in a barbed-wire export company for the day when Ghana is returned to its rightful owners.

Seriously, Mark tried converting the Ghana article to Akanland back in March–April. I used to revert him on sight, as reviewing his ludicrous edits was generally a waste of time and there was almost never anything of value in them. He's simply a bigot. I suspect that since he can't get his way with the Ghana article, he's switched to the Akanland article as a substitute. See also #User: MarkMysoe above.

He even moved Princes Town, Ghana to Princes Town (town) with the edit summary 'universal'! I'm going through his recent contribution history and reverting everything that's still there. — kwami (talk) 18:07, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

Does anyone know if Category:Akan-language surnames is legitimate? MarkMysoe spent a lot of time populating it, none of them are referenced, and in light of recent events I'm curious to know if they are genuinely "Akan" surnames. —Xezbeth (talk) 21:31, 3 January 2013 (UTC)

In a normal situation it would be appropriate to remove categories from articles if they're not supported by the sources; especially if it relates to living people.

Afrikaans in infobox

At the moment the Afrikaans name is listed in the infobox for the tournaments of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and also of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. However there are 11 official Languages of South Africa. The infobox should either have all 11 offical languages, or only English. Afrikaans should not receive special treatment. Coup leaders in officeholder categories?

I'd like to put Nicholas Podier in some sort of officeholder category, because as co-chairman of the People's Redemption Council, he was officially vice-head of state for Liberia for a time. However, I notice that Vice-President of Liberia and Category:Vice-Presidents of Liberia only have room for people who had the title of Vice-President, and there was no president nor vice-president in Liberia for several years after the coup. Is there precedent on what to do with coup leaders who de-facto hold certain positions without claiming the titles of those positions? Nyttend (talk) 21:29, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

• It has a precedent. Vice President of Sierra Leone does that with Sankoh, even though he didn't hold the position "Vice President" until later, and the Title column is really good at showing that. Lists of Heads of State also include coup leaders across the board, regardless of their actual title (for a non-African example, see President of El Salvador, for an African example, see List of heads of state of Togo with Bodjolle and Dadjo included). In terms of Category, although Paul-Émile de Souza was never the "President" of Benin, he has that category attached and has had it since the article was created. I think as long as there is a Title column or notes column where it can be clearly stated and that the actual title held by the person is clearly made in the lead of there personal article and there isn't an attempt to change the person's title at any point, it is following the norm on most other pages and only improves the content of that page. African dance

Hiya, I've cross-listed this to WikiProject Dance -- I am involved in the African dance community in New York City and am interested in improving on, linking, building, and otherwise adding to pages about African dances, teachers, dance companies, etc. Looking for others to collaborate with. Hi Gus, that sounds like a terrific goal. My suggestion would be to start with an article with a very defined scope, such as a particular artist or company (checking first that they meet Wikipedia's basic notability guideline, detailed coverage in multiple reliable sources). Gather the major sources you can find on that person/company, and then try to summarize them into a coherent whole, giving greater article space to topics or events that are discussed in more sources or in more detail. You can use the same approach for specific dances, too, but sometimes that's more difficult to assemble logically than someone's biography, which is easily sorted by chronology or by topic.

As someone who's involved in this community yourself, there are two things you may want to watch out for. First, you don't want your articles on any artist to be promotional in tone, in keeping with Wikipedia's policies on WP:NPOV; try to stick to facts, clearly source all opinions, and make sure to include a proportional share of negative reviews as well as positive ones, any notable controversies, etc. Second, if you're considering writing about any groups you yourself have worked with, take a look at our guidelines on conflict-of-interest (COI); this is a tricky area of editing, but as long as you're open about your COI, your edits would still be a great help.

I'm not knowledgeable enough about African dance to pitch in directly, but you're welcome to leave a note at my talk page any time you'd like feedback or advice. I'd be glad to look over any revisions you make or new articles you create for a bit, too, if that would be helpful. Just let me know. Women in Liberia

Gender Inequality in Sudan

I am also working on a project for my class at the University of Utah where I am creating a new page on Gender Inequality in Sudan/Women in Sudan. New 'Women in the Arab Spring' article

I'm planning on writing a new 'Women in the Arab Spring' article as part of my Poverty, Gender and Human Development course at Rice University. I will add the page to this WikiProject because the Arab Spring represents a major change in certain parts of Africa. Specifying prevalence of Female Genital Mutilation in Africa by country on the FGM page

Hello everyone, my name is Natasha and I am a student at Rice University hoping to add some parts to the already existing page on Female Genital Mutilation. I noticed as I was looking through the page that there is a section on FGM in Africa, but I don't think it's fair to categorize all of Africa into one small section in this page, especially since the prevalence of FGM is so different across different countries within Africa. Thus, I plan to make some additions to the page by focusing on why FGM is more prevalent in certain parts of Africa over other parts. I still am not sure which parts I will focus in on, but I am definitely open to whatever suggestions any of you may have for this idea, or even if any have advice on how to make this most effective. At first I though to make a separate page and break down FGM more specifically in parts of Africa, but I am afraid that doing so will simply cause me to be redundant in terms of the information on FGM and its implications. If you have any suggestions, feel free to let me know. Thank you!

I am not involved, nor I have the time or expertise in the subject, therefore I thought I'd bring this up here before hoping to ANI, so someone knowledgeable in both African companies and the rules of Wikipedia can oversee and instruct the editor(s). There seems to be a lot of COI editing, promotional, unsourced on this company. Lots of purported awards received but no sources. Recently they have added a whole unsourced list of officials of the company. Besides being too much information, we do not want to infringe on BLP. I want to avert an edit war and taking administrative action as the company seems notable, just too much fluff and too many unsourced assertions. I'd say give it a few more weeks and if secondary-source citations aren't provided, ruthlessly delete any uncited material. Energy in Africa Article Addition

I am a current PJHC student at Rice University, and am planning to add to the "Energy in Africa" article as part of a Wikipedia assignment for HUMA 280 (Poverty, Justice, and Human Capabilities). I am interested in exploring how energy in Africa relates to other factors, such as health, poverty, infrastructure, gender, environment, etc. Therefore, I intend to reorganize the article so that it displays these important and integral relationships in an even clearer way than the article does now. I have performed in-depth research on the possible relationships existent between energy and other factors like those specified above, and plan to list these relationships below each energy-type in order to provide a means for comparison between different renewable energy resources in particular. For instance, I will first explain where wind energy is available in Africa, how it is currently being utilized in these regions, how the wind energy in these regions would affect the health, the quality of life, the capabilities/opportunities of this region's people, etc. Do you have any other ideas regarding how to make the argument that appropriate use of energy could improve many aspects of Africa's current social, economic, and environmental situations most effective? I have proposed a contribution on the "Energy in Africa" talk page and would appreciate your feedback.

• Lohenge, the Orphan tag means that no other pages on wikipedia link to that article. Although you certainly want to write great articles, it is also important to make links to that article where appropriate on other wikipedia articles. Right now, no other pages link to the Mooto article, so the Orphan tag is appropriate. There are lots of pages about the DRC which could use improvement. A great way to justify removing the Orphan tag is to improve another page and include a link to the Mooto article. Then you can just remove the orphan tag yourself. The other tag--the additional citations needed--should probably remain on the page as many parts lack citation. Hope that helps.AbstractIllusions (talk) 09:03, 1 December 2013 (UTC)

Southeast Africa, Middle Africa, Islands of Africa

Are these regions in Africa so inconsequential that their articles should be a list of countries and any attempt to create an article about them should be deleted wholesale and not edited if there are disagreements on what countries are or aren't included? AcidSnow seems to think the people living in these regions and their histories and cultures and economies are inconsequential and that the world doesn't care about these regions of Africa and any articles about these regions is a waste of time and any effort to expand coverage of these regions should be deleted wholesale. I have noted myself the misuse of references dealing with genetics, ranging from unreliable sources to using sources to make an argument violating WP:NOR and WP:SYN - sources must specifically discuss the subject of the article (see WP:VRS), but this editor puts together sources to make an argument the way you would do in an essay. Feedback request: VisualEditor special character inserter

The developers are working towards offering mw:VisualEditor to all users at about 50 Wikipedias that have complex language requirements, including some African languages. Many editors at these Wikipedias depend on being able to insert special characters to be able to write articles.

A special character inserter tool is available in VisualEditor now. They would like to know what you think about this tool, especially if you speak languages other than English. To try the ⧼visualeditor-specialcharacterinspector-title⧽ tool, please:

• If you haven't already opted-in, then opt-in to VisualEditor by going to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures and choosing "VisualEditor". Save your preferences.
• Edit any article or your user page in VisualEditor. See the mw:Help:VisualEditor/User guide for information on how to use VisualEditor.

The “insert” pulldown on the task bar of VisualEditor will lead you to the ‘⧼visualeditor-specialcharacterinspector-title⧽’ tool.
