Irish coins

I am new to this WikiProject Ireland so I just thought I would mention it here, I have been doing some work on two articles related to Irish currency so if you guys wanna add them to catagories or watever go ahead. Euro gold and silver commemorative coins (Ireland) & Commemorative coins of Ireland —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kevin hipwell (talkcontribs) 22:43, 17 April 2008

Good work! And thanks for letting this project know about the articles. I added on category to one of the articles, but they seemed in good shape. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:33, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

Ordinary referendum

I don't have the energy to do the research myself right now, but any constition-buffs may be interested in improving the article Ordinary referendum, which is currently unreferenced. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 06:01, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Just discovered Irish Megalithic Tombs. It is currently a rather poor start-class (unreferenced, needs to be wikified), but could make a very good article if anyone has the sources. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 15:48, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Opinions of Template:Irish songs

What everyone's opinion of {{Irish songs}}, grouping songs like Fightin' Men of Crossmaglen,Sean South of Garryowen and Say Hello to the Provos which I'd class as rebel songs with songs like Ireland's Call,No Man's Land (Eric Bogle song) and The Auld Triangle Gnevin (talk) 23:05, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

Not a lot. I have changed the link to Patriotic music#Ireland and if that is what it is intended to represent, then the songs in the template should be the same as those on the list. Crispness (talk) 06:30, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
No Man's Land (Eric Bogle song) is not a patriotic song, it's an anti-war song. In any case Bogle is a Scots emigrant to Oz. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 17:57, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
Also On Raglan Road and Molly Malone shouldn't be on it , so do we
  • Put forward to be deleted?
  • Remove the songs which in our opinions are not patriotic
  • Find a title which suits the current content and risk WP:OR.
I think deletion is the only real option Gnevin (talk) 19:06, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
After adding The Sash to it, I was tempted to say keep just out a sense of mischief to see of anyone wanted to argue that The Sash is not patriotic ... but as you say, the whole thing is irredeemably POV. So I agree: delete. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 19:51, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
TFD nom here Gnevin (talk) 14:38, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
Would they not be classed more as Republican songs or maybe Sinn Féin songs :)

Irish companies

I've been tidying up Types of business entity, which is basically a list of various types of company, partnership etc., arranged by country. Previously Ireland was lumped together with the United Kingdom; I've now given it its own section, but I don't have much information to put in it. Can someone with relevant knowledge have a look and see what they can do with it?--Kotniski (talk) 16:59, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

Happy to try. SeoR (talk) 21:11, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

Substituted banners

I've noticed on my travels that there are quite a few instances of {{WikiProject Ireland}} which have been substituted rather than transcluded. This is usually only a problem when they categorise the pages they're substituted onto into Category:WikiProject banners, thereby cluttering it up. Would it be possible for a project member to go through the pages below, work out if there was a reason for the banner to be substituted, and then either de-substitute, or remove the category link, as necessary? Happymelon 10:42, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for list, Comrade Melon. I see the problem it caused for Category:WikiProject banners, but you may also have noticed tat it also meant that these pages didn't end up in Category:Category-Class Ireland articles, so they were also rather broken for this project's purposes.
So I have unsubsted them all, using {{WikiProject Ireland category}}, which is the banner thing for categories round here.
As to why they were substed ... I didn't check the history for all of them, but on those that I did check it seems to have been the work of Sarah777 at the end of March. Sarah is a very conscientious editor, so I'm sure it was just a good faith misunderstanding, but I'll drop her a link to this discussion just so that she's aware of the issue. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 17:27, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Articles with notability questions (update)

Hello,

last month I posted a note here about Ireland-related articles of unclear notability. I just wanted to note that I have uploaded an update of those listings, with data as of April 25. The listing is here.

The reason why I'm posting this is that the number of articles (for this project) has dramatically increased - it's now at 325, as opposed to 73 last month. That's not necessarily worrisome, and may in fact be intended; I just noticed it as a quite unusual. In any case, you may want to have a look at the listing. --B. Wolterding (talk) 21:57, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

It isn't that they are increasing I think it is that our Killer Bots are finding and tagging them! Sarah777 (talk) 06:14, 28 April 2008 (UTC)
Indeed, much good work. Some of those tagged seemed non-issues but some we would not miss. Maybe someone could take a task to review especially the older ones. The more recent ones I think could be left until current work is done, then reviewed en masse. SeoR (talk) 07:07, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

As Sarah noted, the increase is because we have been tagging them in our assessment drive, and a quick check shows quite a lot of them tagged by me. When assessing an article, I tend to tag it with {{notability}} if there is reasonable doubt that it meets the notability guidelines. In some cases, the problem is a lack of references demonstrating notability, and in others I have doubts whether it could ever meet the grade. The most blatant cases I have PRODded or taken to AFD (and listed at Deletion sorting/Ireland and/or Deletion sorting/Northern Ireland); a quick check shows that I have AFDed over 50 Irish articles in the last 6 weeks. Most of them have, I think, been reasonably uncontentious deletions, though some have been kept (and in a few cases I have withdrawn the nominations).

I didn't know before about the notability-by-project list, and it's a very useful tool. Thanks to B. Wolterding for drawing it to our attention :) --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 12:00, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Silly editor

An editor from Scotland, who says on his user page that he is Irish, is constantly making silly povish changes to articles that cover Ireland. His modus operandus is often to delete the name Ireland from very Irish revenant articles. Best see for yourselves, his name is User:Celtic Harper, and his contributions here [1]. Should be watched. 06:13, 29 April 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.19.137.105 (talk)

I have had a quick look Special:Contributions/Celtic_Harper, and don't see anything amiss. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 11:41, 29 April 2008 (UTC)
A lot of silly ones like this, [2], and others going way back. I can pull out a lot more, and we could discuss each and every one. 12:09, 29 April 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.19.164.139 (talk)
You're right, low-level-silliness. The best thing to do is to issue a warning message (see WP:WARN), and if the problem persists take it to WP:ANI. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 14:09, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

Killeen Cormac

Can anyone figure out whether the stub article Killeen Cormac is about a person or a place or both? It's a very confusiung little stub article. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 14:07, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

looks to me as if the article is just about the church, but not the Saint. Might be a good idea, to remove the bishop and saint category and add a new stub for the saint (if he is notable) --Mdebets (talk) 14:32, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

pre 1919/1922 flag

The tri-colour in this infobox are incorrect and should be replaced but with what? Nothing would be my preferred option unless that group had it's own flag. On the larger scale what flag should be used for Ireland pre 1919 or is it 1922? Gnevin (talk) 16:14, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

I don't think it's appropriate to infer anything, and I agree that no flag should be used unless there evidence in WP:RS that a particular flag was used.
As a general rule, I think that 1801-1922 flags are problematic, because any flag will be seen as POV: the union jack was the legal flag in that period, but since the union was rejected by the majority of the Irish population for most of its existence, the flag is a POV statement. Flags are overused anyway. BTW, this probably ought to be addressed in WP:IMOS. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 16:30, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
Well if people would just follow , WP:Flag but i'll move to WP:IMOS for discussion Gnevin (talk) 16:37, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, my comments looks like I was grumpily saying "don't discuss this here", whereas what I meant was that IMOS should probably have a note about this. Sorry I wasn't clearer ... but I guess that a discussion at WT:IMOS will centralise it in the right place to get something added to IMOS.
You're right that people should just just follow WP:Flag, but sometimes a point needs reinforcement. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 19:02, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Requesting someone take over Portal:Ireland

I will shortly be vanishing, but before I go I'd like to ask that someone take over Portal:Ireland. It's light work, just needing with a new selected article, picture and did-you-know once or twice a week. Easy stuff. --sony-youthpléigh 20:19, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

I am watching the portal for the time being, but someone else will have to step up otherwise it will become another inactive portal again because I don't have enough time to devote to my other interests as it is. I will be modifying it to function with the {{Random portal component with nominate}} template so that two or even three of the sections will automatically rotate between a group of articles. Talk to me if you want some advise on what needs doing and how to do it. ww2censor (talk) 19:11, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Any Dublin or Co. Monaghan residents or Military history enthusiasts?

I have recently gained GA-class for an article on James Graham (soldier), an Irish soldier who fought in the Napoleonic wars and was awarded an annuity for his gallantry at Waterloo. He was born in/near Clones, Co. Monaghan, in 1791, and died at Royal Hospital Kilmainham in 1845. I have taken the article as far as I can with the resources available to me. To reach FA class it would need more information about his family and early life in Clones, some more photographs/illustrations (such as his memorial plaque in Clones, or a copy of his portrait now at National Gallery of Ireland), and perhaps more from his service record. It may be that one of you has access to resources there in Ireland, and would be interested in pursuing this. Drop into the article talk page or my talk page if you are interested. List of Irish county nicknames

Hi all, can you have a look at List of Irish county nicknames, i moved too List of GAA county nicknames but it has now been moved back . Which title do you feel is better ? Gnevin (talk) 09:23, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

"Irish county nicknames" is better. Names like the Orchard County, the Rebel County and the Garden of Ireland are not exclusively (or even primarily) GAA nicknames. Scolaire (talk) 10:34, 6 May 2008 (UTC)

{{Deputy Prime Ministers of Ireland}} and {{Prime Ministers of Ireland}}

Was their ever a discussion as too why these templates use PM of Ireland instead of Taoiseach/Taoiseachs or Taoisigh? Gnevin (talk) 17:08, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

Ditto Template:Speakers of Dáil Éireann for the Ceann Comhairle? Scolaire (talk) 21:01, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
It's because this is the English language wikipedia and so common terms like Prime Minister are used in addition to the Official Irish name. It makes things more readable for any editors who do not speak Irish. Does Cinn Comhairlí Dáil Éireann mean to anyone who does not speak Irish and who thought they were reading the English language wikipedia not Vicipéid? Snappy56 (talk) 07:25, 17 May 2008 (UTC)
Does WP:Common mean common in Ireland or Common in the world? Because Taoiseach would be (i'm guess) the most common in Ireland but not outside it Gnevin (talk) 10:30, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
The point I was making is that the Taoiseach is the head of government of Ireland, not the prime minister, which is the name that the British and others use for head of government; likewise the Ceann Comhairle is the presiding officer of the Dáil, not the speaker which is the name used by other states. Note the key sentences (from Head of government) "the head of government is often styled Prime Minister" and (from Speaker (politics)) "The term speaker is a title often given to the presiding officer of a legislative body." The more appropriate names for the templates would therefore be Heads of government of Ireland, Deputy heads of government of Ireland and Presiding officers of Dáil Éireann. Scolaire (talk) 13:34, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Irish language names of Taoisigh

It may be of interest to some Users to know a discussion is taking place on Talk: Taoiseach on whether the policy of including the Irish language names of Taoisigh should be ended. Regards. Redking7 (talk) 20:41, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

It may not be of interest to all the users who already took part in this debate all of 3 months ago (Feb 08) and achieved a consenus here - WP:IMOS. Why should we re-open this recent debate simply because you weren't around at the time? Snappy56 (talk) 07:30, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Draft Guidelines for Lists of companies by country - Feedback Requested

Within WikiProject Companies I am trying to establish guidelines for all Lists of companies by country, the implementation of which would hopefully ensure a minimum quality standard and level of consistency across all of these related but currently disparate articles. The ultimate goal is the improvement of these articles to Featured List status. As a WikiProject that currently has one of these lists within your scope, I would really appreciate your feedback! Could you add the title field with the persons name as standard behaviour? Thanks, Snappy56 (talk) 01:46, 5 August 2008 (UTC)
I've noticed some of them are not being formatted correctly, see Peter Hughes (politician) or [3] if someone else has edited it since. Variously, the oireachtas-database template, politician-stub template and sometimes the See also section, Footnotes section and External links section are ending up in the navboxes.
Another point, is that when there is only 1 set of succession boxes, the navboxes does not autocollapse, see Daniel McCarthy, why not? Surely it should, otherwise it's just another layer? Snappy56 (talk) 02:17, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

  2. have added auto corrections to AWB which will correct Peter Hughes (politician) type errors

  4. Autocollapse only work when you have 2 or more templates ,will request change to {{Navboxes}} to fix Gnevin (talk) 22:41, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

Irish people GA Sweeps Review: On Hold

As part of the WikiProject Good Articles, we're doing sweeps to go over all of the current GAs and see if they still meet the GA criteria and I'm specifically going over all of the "Culture and Society" articles. I have reviewed Irish people and believe the article currently meets the majority of the criteria and should remain listed as a Good article. I have left this message at this WikiProject's talk page so that any interested members can assist in helping the article keep its GA status. In reviewing the article, I have found there are multiple issues that may need to be addressed, and I'll leave the article on hold for seven days for them to be fixed. I have left messages on the talk pages of the main contributors of the article and other related WikiProjects. Please consider helping address the several points that I listed on the talk page of the article, which shouldn't take too long to fix if multiple editors assist in the workload. If you have any questions, let me know on my talk page and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Happy editing! --Nehrams2020 (talk) 04:05, 25 June 2008 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Luxor - old TV series in Ireland

Hello. I'm PetaRZ, mainly active on bg.wikipedia. First, I'm not quite sure if this is the most appropriate place to ask, but have you ever heard of Irish TV series called "Luxor" (or possibly spelled Luksor), because an article about it appeared on bg.wiki and now it's on AfD, because we failed to find any (reliable or even not :)) sources. The article claims that it was broadcast on Ireland TV1 between 1961 and 1991 (which may explain why we fail to find IMDB record or any other information online), and produced by "Х1" and "Medieval Dolphin Media Home Entertainment". According to the article, more than 450 episodes were broadcast. It must be a series for a 9 years old boy, who found a time machine. The different parts, and the respective times of their first broadcast, should be "Luxor and the Evolution of the Universe" (1961-1965), "Luxor in the prehistory"(1965-1968), "Luxor in the Classical world"(1968-1973), "Luxor in the Middle Ages"(1973-1982) and "Luxor in the Modern times"(1982-1991). Any help will be greately appreciated. --PetaRZ (talk) 11:49, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

Lighthouse at Hook Head

I've been fleshing out the lighthouse on Hook Head, but it's not clear that it should be called Hook Lighthouse or Hook Head Lighthouse or something else. I'm inclined to move it to the latter name, but I'd rather have some confirmation before I do this. Mangoe (talk) 17:46, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

To Do Lists

There are five different to do lists, they are all on the WP:IE page.

This is how I would condense them: User:Drog lad/tdl DrogLad 07:46, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

What you may not know about is that there is an extensive Irish Wikipedians "To Do" list here that you may want to reference too in the same way that show up in the Irish Wikipedians' notice board or possible use that as a basis for the "Tasks" to do. Mind you, little work seems to get done on the Wikipedia:WikiProject Ireland main page except for some updating of occasional items like I do for the FAs. Maybe you are an organisational person who can create a better, more useful layout for the project. Just an idea, but perhaps you could use a table style like the Irish Wikipedians list and group the different headings into a similar format for easier reading because a simple list looks quite boring. Please run your ideas by here first if you want to, or are going to, make major changes. Cheers ww2censor (talk) 17:50, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

WikiProject notification bot

There is currently a proposal for a bot that would notify WikiProjects when their articles have entered certain workflows, e.g. when they are nominated for deletion or for Good article reassessment.

The question is whether a relevant number of wikiprojects would be interested in using such a bot. You can find details of the functionality, and leave your comments, at the bot request page.

Can we create a standered image template for all images relating to ireland? I sick and tired of looking at image pages that are hard to understand due to outdated, useless and ugly templatesDrogLad 07:27, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Drog, not sure what you mean - are you talking about the infoboxes; images in the infoboxes or something else? Give an example? Sarah777 (talk) 13:07, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, tell us what you mean. The post is unfortunately non-informative. Thanks ww2censor (talk) 13:58, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Ireland/Éire

I know this is still a contentious issue, but why can we not refer to our own country by its proper name(s), rather than the Republic of Ireland? This is only its description. We have the constitutional and legal right to do so. No one else does. Fergananim (talk) 23:42, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia:BISLES (British Isles Terminology task force)

I've added this new task force to the 'Ireland Related Wikiprojects list' (its actually a sub of WP:GEOG). Didn't see a task force list to file it under. Input is welcome. --Matt Lewis (talk) 03:04, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

Where is the correct place for {{oireachtas-database}}?

This template is every where , should it be below {{Navboxes}}, in Navboxes , below the external links or in Referneces? In my opinion its acting as a external link Gnevin (talk) 22:37, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

P.S if we decide its an external link it need to be formatted as such. Gnevin (talk) 22:40, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
It should be in the References section, if there is no references section then it should be below Navboxes, it should definitley not be in navboxes. Snappy56 (talk) 07:44, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
But it's not a reference , if it was it should use <ref> and be auto generated by <reflist> . I believe it should be formatted as a external link Gnevin (talk) 13:13, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Just popping in briefly ('fraid I won't be back properly until next month), to say that in nearly every case it's a reference to a source used in writing the article (rather than an external link, which points to further reading material). It would of course be best if footnotes were used at each point where the oi-db is the source, but that's a job to be done. In the meantime, I added {{oireachtas-database}} to the ref section of articles to indicate that the article is based on a reliable source. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 14:58, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

query about Kilmanagh?

There is a place named Kilmanagh in the U.S. state of Michigan. I have a brief description of the town indicating that it is an Irish name, first used to describe the nearby creek that overflowed each spring. I see it mentioned in a few Ireland-related articles (e.g., Redhouse, Kilkenny, Scattery Island Cathedral and Monastery, Kilkenny Central Access Scheme, Kilkenny Senior Hurling Championship), but nothing more. What does the term mean? Also, Kilmanagh is currently a redlink -- the only other mention of it I see is Kilmanagh, Ontario which is a redirect to Caledon, Ontario -- I was planning to make a disambiguation page for Kilmanagh. Is there an appropriate target article for the use in Ireland? olderwiser 08:55, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

Featured article review

Irish Houses of Parliament has been nominated for a featured article review. Articles are typically reviewed for two weeks. Please leave your comments and help us to return the article to featured quality. If concerns are not addressed during the review period, articles are moved onto the Featured Article Removal Candidates list for a further period, where editors may declare "Keep" or "Remove" the article from featured status. The instructions for the review process are here. Reviewers' concerns are here. Marskell (talk) 15:01, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

omagh bombing

Is this article expanded enough for a 'Good article nomination'? The Squicks (talk) 23:15, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

In general it looks good, seems a comprehensive, well cited article. Let me make some observations/suggestions;
  • The image needs a Fair use rationale by adding and filling in this Template:Non-free use rationale template.
  • Are there any more images available, especially public domain images, even current images of one of the memorials.
  • There are quite a lot of duplicate wikilinks. You only need to link the first instance of a term, not several.
  • You really only need one verifiable citation for any statement that might be questioned, while in many instances there are as many as five when one would be sufficient. I not saying remove them all but I would reduce the quantity of citations and concentrate on quality.
  • Generally we are now seeing that no dates are not being linked at all, so I you could unlink but that's a small point for now.
Hope that helps and good luck if you do nomimate it. Don't forget to check out the good article criteria for yourself. ww2censor (talk) 21:45, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice.
Hope that helps and good luck if you do nomimate it. I can't nominate it. Or, at least, I don't think I can. I've made so many edits to it that it looks rather like a conflict-of-interest situation. Could you nominate it? The Squicks (talk) 05:30, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

Northern Ireland Flags again

Some editors on the NI page are insisting on changing the term Flag of Ireland to something else e.g. Irish Tricolour - even though they use the correct names of the UK and former NI flags. It is being discussed here Talk: Northern Ireland#flags. Regards. Redking7 (talk) 22:03, 1 September 2008 (UTC) Flag of Ireland

List of Irish monarchs

List of Irish monarchs is being currently under featured list review. Everyone is invited to make comment and/or !vote on the subpage. !Votes are appreciated as featured list review doesn't get all too much traffic. Thank you! Best, --Cameron* 19:36, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

To be honest, I don't see the point of it. It's just a list of English/British/United Kingdomish kings and queens with the word "Ireland" substituted, and a shorter list of old Irish kingdoms to give it local flavour. If people want a list of monarchs let them just go to England/Britain/UK. Scolaire (talk) 06:53, 13 September 2008 (UTC)
I agree with Scolaire, this is a particularly pointless and useless article. It is duplication of Monarchy of Ireland. It is also very POV, the POV being that only monarchs of Ireland were the English/British ones. Snappy56 (talk) 09:19, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
Well, I'm sure the people who created it meant well. As has been said, Monarchy of Ireland covers part of it, and in any case it was a Lordship of Ireland, not a monarchy, until Henry VIII decided that he wanted to be king. Angus McLellan (Talk) 14:43, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Ireland disambiguation task force

An Ireland disambiguation task force (WP:IDTF) has been created. It will: free up various Talk pages for their respective articles, avoid inner and cross article repetition, avoid debate-postponing moratoriums from needing to be placed, and can accommodate all aspects of the issue of disambiguating the word "Ireland". --Matt Lewis (talk) 04:29, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

This so-called task force totally fails most criteria and guidelines of WP:TASKFORCE.
  • It is not "a non-independent subgroup of a larger WikiProject".
  • It does not "rely on the parent project to provide as much of the procedural and technical infrastructure as possible".
  • It does not "focus primarily on direct article-writing activity".
  • It has not been "set up on a subpage of the parent project page".
This is just a blatant attempt at Forum shopping to try to overturn the status quo where the promoters are not getting the result they want. ww2censor (talk) 16:51, 14 September 2008 (UTC)
e/c Why not let people make their own minds up? --Matt Lewis (talk) 17:06, 14 September 2008 (UTC)
Ww, that is a rather unfortunate and intemperate description of the Task Force (badly needed as the current Article title simply cannot stand and is pure political imposition by weight of numbers, ignoring all the facts of the case). I think you should reflect before attributing to Matt the motivation you do as it comes very close to breaching WP:NPA. Sarah777 (talk) 17:04, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Ireland

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! Ballyshannon

There's a problem on this page. One editor in particular insists on a list of (possibly) school mates. Three editors, including me, have removed the list and it's been restored each time, most recently with an unjustified protection template. The editor (John-joe123) has been, IMO, unreasonable (see User talk:Folks at 137#Ballyshannon Article) and ignores comments from other eds (see User talk:John-joe123#Ballyshannon). Anyone suggest an admin with an Irish background (to add weight) to persuade JJ123 to act properly? I hope that this approach would stop things getting nasty. Folks at 137 (talk) 17:23, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Good Lord! Is he still at it? Needs a block maybe?? Sarah777 (talk) 20:22, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
I've reverted him too. Twice. I can't comprehend how he thinks that randomly adding one class list from one school in Ballyshannon is acceptable/useful. If it becomes any more frequent maybe it could be taken to WP:ANI. Fribbler (talk) 18:24, 18 September 2008 (UTC)
Well he's still at it! Today he restored that list, and added an objectionable comment to Fribbler's talk page. We've tried reasoning, repeated corrections and warnings; to no effect. I'm as annoyed by the hassle as by anything else, but perhaps we adopt a "shoot on sight" approach (monitor & delete asap) and, if that doesn't work by Monday, request a block (based on discourtesy and 3RR). Personally, I doubt that JJ has even absorbed what's been said. Odd, in other areas, he acts reasonably. Folks at 137 (talk) 19:23, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

Date format poll confirmation

There is ongoing discussion on the talk page for the Manual of Style (including a series of polls) aimed at achieving consensus on presenting dates in American (December 6, 1922) or International (6 December 1922) format on an article by article basis. The poll gives full instructions, but briefly the choices are:

  • C = Option C, the winner of the initial poll and run-off. (US articles have US format dates, international format otherwise)
  • R = Retain existing wording. (National format for English-speaking countries, no guidance otherwise).

If you wish to participate or review the progress of discussion, you may follow this link. --Pete (talk) 08:53, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

Broadford, County Limerick

I came across this article when I checked through the edits of a vandalizing IP. In this case, however, the solution is not a simple revert of the last edit as I failed to find a single useful revision of this article. This curious article started its career on 26 August 2005 as town of the Scottish island of Skye, got hijacked to become an article describing the Irish village Broadford in County Limerick, got moved to its current name, its population suddenly decreased significantly, became exclusively Roman-Catholic, was put under quarantine because of an outbreak of the Ebola virus, was outdone by Dromcollogher which managed to get almost three people killed by the infamous "Wall Of Death", has so few residents that they must be enumerated multiple times, returned to a higher population number, got even Gary Glitter as resident, got rid of the Ebola virus but kept the low population, got an interesting new landmark beside the Chipper and Neenans Pub, its population suddenly increased from 300 to 1000, got the misspelled Carnegie Library, extended its set of landmarks with a human, got rat-infested, which caused the population to come down to a historic low of 75 persons, got a church dedicated to the Lady of the snows, got 1000 persons returned, vanished from the map, got some spelling error in one of the vandalisms fixed, got some vandalized vandalism reverted, got infected by leper, got the highest obesity rate in Munster, the vandalism was once again nicely spellchecked, got a nice infobox, became famous due to the Broadford Musical, and was finally vandalized again. I suggest to delete this article, to rewrite it from scratch, and to keep an eye on it. --AFBorchert (talk) 18:26, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

I've meanwhile filed this article for deletion. --AFBorchert (talk) 20:50, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

Image needs replacement

Hello all...

An image used in the Carlingford, County Louth article, specifically Image:Autumn-Ghan-House brighter.jpg, has a little bit of a licensing issue. The image was uploaded back when the rules around image uploading were less restrictive. It is presumed that the uploader was willing to license the picture under the GFDL license but was not clear in that regard. As such, the image, while not at risk of deletion, is likely not clearly licensed to allow for free use in any future use of this article. If anyone has an image that can replace this, or can go take one and upload it, it would be best.

You have your mission, take your camera and start clicking.--Jordan 1972 (talk) 22:35, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
