Band member timeline standards discussion at WikiProject Musicians

I wanted everyone here to know about the current discussion happening at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Musicians#Create Member Section/Timeline Standards that may put an end to all of the edit warring and inconsistency surround band member timelines. — DLManiac (talk) 06:49, 21 November 2015 (UTC)

The Garage rock article is now GA!

The garage rock article has now gone GA! Take a look at enjoy. You will notice that it is filled with a lot of interesting history, even some trivia, and eye-opening discoveries from a really magical time--at the summit of rock's golden age in the 60s. Band member lists

Onec again I raise the issue of band member lists in infoboxes. At 10cc, under "Members", it lists Graham Gouldman, Paul Burgess, Rick Fenn, Mike Stevens and Mick Wilson. WTF? And, there, relegated under "past members", along with a host of other names, are Eric Stewart, Lol Creme, Kevin Godley. This is just wrong, wrong, wrong, and something needs to be done about it, not just with this band but with a whole host of others, where a bunch of people no one has ever heard of appear to be prominent members. A way must be found, somehow or other, to list the true members of bands' original or classic line-ups more prominently. 109.151.39.91 (talk) 01:05, 8 December 2015 (UTC)

‘The’ vs. ‘the’ mid-sentence

Several years ago, a controversial consensus was reached not to capitalize the definite article in mid-sentence uses of ’The Beatles’ (thus ‘I like the Beatles’ as opposed to ‘I like The Beatles’; see here for arguments for each side), and articles for most rock bands whose names begin with ‘The’ have since been edited accordingly. Although the MoS on music has since been edited to say ‘Mid-sentence, per the MoS, the word "the" should in general not be capitalized in continuous prose’, I would like to revive the issue for a very simple reason: in the Beatles discussion, both sides seem to have completely ignored the fact that ‘The’ is the first word in the band's name and the first word in a proper noun is generally capitalized every time the proper noun is used (cf. Of Mice and Men and To Kill a Mockingbird). It should thus be capitalized mid-sentence simply for being the first word in a proper noun, and it is thus entirely possible to say that ‘The Beatles’ should be written mid-sentence even though the ‘the’ is generally not capitalized in band names like ‘Echo & the Bunnymen’ and ‘Booker T. & the M.G.s’. If you take that into consideration, some of the external style guides presented in favor of ‘the’ become ambiguous at best (Duke University's, for example, simply says ‘Avoid unnecessary capitals’), and the MoS has changed in two places to support ‘The’: MOS:THECAPS now says, ‘Use the same capitalization as the title of the article’, and although it says this is only for song and album titles, WP:BANDNAME says, ‘capitalize the first and last word [of the song or album title]’, and it would be irrational to draw a distinction between the first word of band names and the first word of song and album titles; they're all proper nouns, after all. What do you think? Should it be ‘the Beatles’ or ‘The Beatles’ mid-sentence? Esszet (talk) 23:28, 18 January 2016 (UTC)

I think "aww jeez, not this again". The debate was utterly pointless, a consensus was reached, and more important things must be looked at. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 09:04, 23 January 2016 (UTC)

Draft:Michael Jackson & The Jacksons – Month To Month Recording Session Guide

Anyone interested in helping with Draft:Michael Jackson & The Jacksons – Month To Month Recording Session Guide? It was recently created by a very, very new editor (The Doctor 1170) and he could definitely use some help with this. It's written like a personal blog, is unsourced, and I'm worried that it might be considered too indiscriminate for Wikipedia, but I could maybe see the potential merit in having a recording guide to an artist's work. I'm going to post this in a few places looking for help. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 11:40, 21 February 2016 (UTC)

Auto-assessment of article classes

Following a recent discussion at WP:VPR, there is consensus for an opt-in bot task that automatically assesses the class of articles based on classes listed for other project templates on the same page. In other words, if WikiProject A has evaluated an article to be C-class and WikiProject B hasn't evaluated the article at all, such a bot task would automatically evaluate the article as C-class for WikiProject B.

If you think auto-assessment might benefit this project, consider discussing it with other members here. For more information or to request an auto-assessment run, please visit User:BU RoBOT/autoassess. This is a one-time message to alert projects with over 1,000 unassessed articles to this possibility. ~ RobTalk 01:22, 4 June 2016 (UTC)

Help with an article

I have a huge request. Long story short, I came across Americade (band) via the article for Gerard de Marigny, which is up for AfD and is incredibly promotional and has issues with notability. de Marigny looks to be non-notable enough for his own article and I'm concerned that this band is also non-notable. The article is almost completely unsourced and would require a substantial re-write from head to toe to remove all of the promotional puffery. I'm honestly debating taking it to AfD just to get it nuked, since I don't know that there's much here that would be salvageable.

Anyone want to take a whack at cleaning it up and saving it? If you do, take any and all claims in the article with a huge grain of salt, as the editor who created the article (who appears to be de Marigny) seems to like taking non-notable claims and puffing them up to seem notable. For example, he tried using video views for a YouTube video as a sign of notability, tried using the presence of de Marigny's quotes in quotation websites (where anyone can add content) as a sign, and so on. Something that might seem notable in the article might end up being something that actually isn't as far as Wikipedia is concerned. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 07:04, 17 August 2016 (UTC)

Psychonautic Sun

Psychonautic Sun (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Would somebody from WP:ROCK mind taking a look at this stub and assessing it. The file was prod'd for deletion by Marvellous Spider-Man, but it was removed by an IP who seems to be associated with the band. I think this might be a case of WP:TOOSOON since none of the sources (except maybe one) are independent or appropriate for establishing notability. I googled the band, but all I could find were social media accounts or other trivial mentions. I was going to take it to AfD, but figured I'd ask for feedback here first in case I am missing something. FWIW, I am posting here because the band seems to a rock band of some type. Thank in advance. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:32, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

Rap against rock

Can you please explain to me with rap and soul music you do the singles and album sales but with rock music and even country music you only count album sales that is total bias, you should not count singles in total sales because a rap artist does 8 singles a album where a rock/metal band don't release singles so a rap artist is bound to sell more singles. Also in downloads which is single totals now you can download a song 5 times and it counts for 5 sales, and to me downloading is not buying a song so singles sales are a total con. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:C7D:5A2D:4A00:29E4:F104:FBE8:7FB0 (talk) 11:38, 6 December 2016 (UTC)

Greetings WikiProject Rock music/Archive 6 Members!

This is a one-time-only message to inform you about a technical proposal to revive your Popular Pages list in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:

If the above proposal gets in the Top 10 based on the votes, there is a high likelihood of this bot being restored so your project will again see monthly updates of popular pages.

Further, there are over 260 proposals in all to review and vote for, across many aspects of wikis.

Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.

Looking for FA support for Courtney Love article

Hello all, I've worked quite extensively on the Courtney Love article, and have nominated it for FA status several times but have failed to garner enough supporters to further it beyond the nomination process. I believe the article absolutely fulfills the criteria, and I have gotten supports for promotion each time, just not enough. If anyone would mind looking it over and leaving comments/supporting if you feel so, I'd be very grateful. There does not seem to be many people willing to do reviews of it during the nomination process—I know she is a divisive figure—but I'm hoping I can gather some support to get an FA promotion. Thank you! --Drown Soda (talk) 05:33, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Notice to participants at this page about adminship

Many participants here create a lot of content, may have to evaluate whether or not a subject is notable, decide if content complies with BLP policy, and much more. Well, these are just some of the skills considered at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship.

So, please consider taking a look at and watchlisting this page:

You could be very helpful in evaluating potential candidates, and even finding out if you would be a suitable RfA candidate.

Many thanks and best wishes,

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject Rock music/Archive 6/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject Rock music.

We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:

  • The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
  • The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
  • The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).

We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject Rock music, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. Wikipedia has many thousands of wikilinks which point to disambiguation pages. It would be useful to readers if these links directed them to the specific pages of interest, rather than making them search through a list. Members of WikiProject Disambiguation have been working on this and the total number is now below 20,000 for the first time. Some of these links require specialist knowledge of the topics concerned and therefore it would be great if you could help in your area of expertise.

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:52, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

LILIAC (band) - Draft article - Will you help?

LILIAC is a hard rock and metal band consisting of five siblings, ages 11 to 20. I don't know if they meet notability criteria yet, but they probably will soon. I started a (rough) draft article at User:Markworthen/Liliac. Please add, subtract, edit, etc. I have a fair amount of Wikipedia experience, but I've never started an article about a band, so please excuse any rookie mistakes. ;-)

Also, if there's a good reason for the article to be in an official "sandbox" let me know. I have found the sandbox/draft article setup to be confusing and annoying, but I defer to those of you who know more.

Thanks!   - Mark D Worthen PsyD (talk) (I am a man. The traditional male pronouns are fine.) 10:09, 11 July 2019 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Should adult-oriented rock (AOR) have a real page of its own?

Excuse me if this isn't the right place to post this.

Yesterday, I made a post on the Discussion page for the disambiguation page for "Adult-oriented rock" (found here) that stated that a real page for adult-oriented rock (AOR) should be written. On that page, I explained my case, defined the genre, and briefly explained the difference between album-oriented rock (a radio format) and adult-oriented rock (a genre). I figured I might get more responses on how to proceed here.

If a page for adult-oriented rock was to be made, would rateyourmusic.com be a reliable source to use? On an artist's page, it lists their primary genres, and AOR is listed by AOR artists. Also, would this book, The AOR Bible, be considered a reliable source to use? I'd like to know before I spend $45 on it.

I understand that "adult-oriented rock (AOR)" is a less-than-ideal name for the genre, but that, along with "melodic rock," is generally what it's referred to as. I mean, "glam metal" isn't a perfect description of the genre it describes, as glam metal generally isn't actually metal (and I don't mean that derogatorily).

Thank you for any responses. BDR77777 (talk) 22:12, 12 February 2020 (UTC)

Plagiarized content in The Cooper Brothers article

Hi all. I'm reporting this here because I don't really know what to do about it and I hoped that some others here might know. While doing some small edits today (adding wikilinks etc) to The Cooper Brothers article, I've realised that almost all of the "Biography" sub-section is plagiarized from the band's official website here. I've no idea if this a problem or not, but my understanding is that plagiarized text is normally not welcome on Wikipedia. --Kohoutek1138 (talk) 15:33, 12 August 2020 (UTC)

Update to peer review page

Hi all, I've boldly updated your project's peer review page (Wikipedia:WikiProject Rock music/Peer review) by updating the instructions and archiving old reviews.

The new instructions use Wikipedia's general peer review process (WP:PR) to list peer reviews. Your project's reviews are still able to be listed on your local page too.

The benefits of this change is that review requests will get seen by a wider audience and are likely to be attended to in a more timely way (many WikiProject peer reviews remain unanswered after years). The Wikipedia peer review process is also more maintained than most WikiProjects, and this may help save time for your active members.

I've done this boldly as it seems your peer review page is pretty inactive and I am working through around 90 such similar peer review pages. Please feel free to discuss below - please ping me ({{u|Tom (LT)}}) in your response.

Cheers and hope you are well, Tom (LT) (talk) 23:54, 10 November 2020 (UTC)

Touring members on a band member timeline

Touring members usually shouldn't be on a band's timeline, but is it a good idea to include them with bands that have instrumental vacancies? Paramore doesn't have an official bassist. Paramore didn't have an official drummer for many years. Chicago didn't have an official guitarist (unless you count occasional guitar played by Bill Champlin on Chicago 16) from 1980 to 1984. Chicago's touring guitarist played guitar on Chicago XIV and Chicago 16. Kart2401real (talk) 18:08, 16 November 2020 (UTC)

An editor has requested for Muse (disambiguation) to be moved to Muse. Since you had some involvement with Muse (disambiguation), you might want to participate in the move discussion (if you have not already done so). Whether or not to move depends mostly on the question if a) Muses (the ancient Greek goddesses) is the primary topic, or b) Muses and Muse (band) are comparably significant, and there is no primary topic.
