Team name questions

Since it's started to come up recently, I've decided to go ahead and open up a discussion on team nickname questions. As is noted on the main page of this project, some women's programs have different team nicknames then their respective men's programs. Of curse, determining exactly which of those programs do use different nicknames can sometimes actually be quite difficult, and is not helped at all by fans, and sometimes even media members colloquially inserting a "Lady" prefix in front of every team nickname, whether it actually belongs there or not. With that said, I've gone through the list of teams and come up with 18 teams that I feel there is some reason to at least call into question exactly what their team nickname is.

I don't have much firsthand knowledge about any of these programs, so I'm hoping that other editors who may be more familiar with them may have an opinion here. Of course it goes without saying that we want the List of NCAA Division I softball programs, as well as our Master Table to reflect the most accurate and correct team names possible. I will be opening up separate discussion points for each team name that I have questions about. I don't have a strong opinion or firsthand knowledge of any of these, but my feeling is we should comply with Wikipedia's article names that exist to date. If we find issues via independent sources, we should either open a discussion on the talk page, or if it is straightforward and not controversial, make the necessary changes to all relevant pages and navboxes. Generally, the college sports projects on WP use third-party sources to determine names rather than official sites, so looking at how ESPN, CBS Sports, SI, and others refer to the teams is the best guidance I have. Arkansas

According to Arkansas Lady Razorbacks, the women's teams at Arkansas are named the "Lady Razorbacks," however, all press releases on their official site refer to the team as the "Razorbacks." Ejgreen77 (talk) 19:28, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Austin Peay

There are two problems with this team, first, whether the team should be referred to as "Austin Peay" or "Austin Peay State" (i.e. "Austin Peay Governors" vs. "Austin Peay State Governors"). The second problem involves the name of the women's teams. Wikipedia refers to them as the "Lady Governors" (Austin Peay State Governors and Lady Governors, Category:Austin Peay State Governors and Lady Governors), yet all press releases on their official site refer to the team as the "Lady Govs." (Similar to Tennessee, see below) Ejgreen77 (talk) 19:28, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Cal State Northridge

According to List of college sports teams in the United States with different nicknames for men's and women's teams, the women's teams at Cal State Northridge are named the "Lady Matadors," yet other places on Wikipedia (Cal State Northridge Matadors, Category:Cal State Northridge Matadors) and all press releases on their official site refer to the team as the "Matadors." Campbell

According to List of college sports teams in the United States with different nicknames for men's and women's teams, the women's teams at Campbell are named the "Lady Camels," yet other places on Wikipedia are inconsistent (Campbell Fighting Camels, Category:Campbell Fighting Camels) and all press releases on their official site refer to the team as the "Camels." East Tennessee State

The team is referred to on Wikipedia as the "Lady Buccaneers" (East Tennessee State Buccaneers and Lady Buccaneers, Category:East Tennessee State Buccaneers and Lady Buccaneers), however, all press releases on their official site refer to the team as the "Buccaneers." Eastern Kentucky

The team is referred to on Wikipedia as the "Lady Colonels" (Eastern Kentucky Colonels and Lady Colonels, Category:Eastern Kentucky Colonels and Lady Colonels), however, all press releases on their official site refer to the team as the "Colonels." Ejgreen77 (talk) 19:31, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

LSU

Mississippi State

Wikipedia indicates that the name of the Mississippi State women's teams is the "Lady Bulldogs" (List of college sports teams in the United States with different nicknames for men's and women's teams, Category:Mississippi State Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs), however, all press releases on their official site refer to the team as the "Bulldogs." Missouri State

Robert Morris

Wikipedia is inconstant in the naming of the women's teams (Robert Morris Colonials, Robert Morris Lady Colonials ice hockey, Category:Robert Morris Colonials) All press releases on their official site refer to the team as the "Colonials." Ejgreen77 (talk) 19:35, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Samford

South Alabama

Wikipedia is inconstant in the naming of the women's teams (South Alabama Jaguars, Category:South Alabama Jaguars) All press releases on their official site refer to the team as the "Jaguars." Ejgreen77 (talk) 19:36, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Tennessee

The team is referred to on Wikipedia as the "Lady Volunteers" (Tennessee Lady Volunteers softball, Category:Tennessee Volunteers and Lady Volunteers), however, all press releases on their official site refer to the team as the "Lady Vols." (Similar to Austin Peay, see above) Ejgreen77 (talk) 19:36, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

Both "Lady Volunteers" and "Lady Vols" are acceptable for Tennessee women's teams, except for the period between 2015-17 when the athletics department eliminated the name for all women's sports except the Tennessee Lady Volunteers basketball, when the team was referred to as "the Volunteers" or "the Vols." In general, "Lady Volunteers" is more formal and should be used for article title about women's sports at Tennessee, while "Lady Vols" comes later on second reference. This is similar to the practice of calling it "Tennessee" on first reference and "UT" on second onward. dwells-tn (talk) 3:42, 19 July 2021 (UTC).

Tennessee–Martin

There is a great deal of confusion over whether the team should be referred to as "Tennessee–Martin" or "UT Martin" (i.e. "Tennessee–Martin Skyhawks" vs. "UT Martin Skyhawks"). Some things on Wikipedia use one way, some use another. Their official site seems to use "UT Martin." Ejgreen77 (talk) 19:37, 4 June 2013 (UTC)

There is an ongoing discussion at our sister project, Wikipedia:WikiProject College baseball, concerning notability that can be found here. I believe that many of the issues relating to notability being discussed there (particularly relating to programs, seasons, and venues) could also be considered applicable to college softball, as well as baseball. Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Consensus needed for inclusion of college athlete parent categories

There is a consensus discussion underway about whether or not to include a parent category (in this case Category:College men's soccer players in the United States) in addition to the specific school category (for example Category:Akron Zips men's soccer players). One school of thought is that college athletics category structures should be similar, but another is that individual sport projects should be free to chart their own paths on the matter. Rankings References

There are some rankings, such as Softball America that don't update their rankings with a new article weekly. They just update one url with the new week and there is no archived record for that page. Does anyone know how to better cite the source for those rankings, instead of just listing the one URL at the top and making sure it gets caught every week?Swimmer33 (talk) 13:40, 20 April 2021 (UTC)
