Project members
Hello everyone! We have a section named project members, some of us have not signed yet. Some people have not been editing wikipedia for mor than two years. I am moving the inactive members to the new passive members section that I am creating now. Osplace 01:39, 19 August 2015 (UTC)
Stubs are welcome
Recently Sander.v.Ginkel (talk · contribs · count) helped us a lot by creating the 2014 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Championship squads missing articles. This is a good example. This user created stubs about every missing person. This is ok, from now on is a lot easier to expand those article adding the appropriate information when it happens. For example, this days we are having the 2015 Women's NORCECA Volleyball Championship and the 2015 Women's European Volleyball Championship. We can add the appropriate information about medals and awards to players, but only if we have the appropriate squads article. We need to do the same with the 2014 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship squads, 2015 FIVB Volleyball Men's World Cup squads and 2015 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Cup squads from this last olympic cycle. Later we can go back and do the same for previous notable competitions. Please love the stubs. Osplace 00:20, 4 October 2015 (UTC)
- In the upcoming months I can also do athletes from the other world championships and Olympic Games. So be prepared for a lot of more stubs :) Are the volleyball players from the European Games and European Championships also notable? Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 12:45, 4 October 2015 (UTC)
- Medallists are notables for both. Thanks a lot, we want more stubs! I am pretty sure that Kante4 (talk · contribs · count), Mohsen1248 (talk · contribs · count), Noncommittalp (talk · contribs · count), Ases52 (talk · contribs · count), Yrlyrl (talk · contribs · count), arielslytherin (talk · contribs · count) and Chiba ryo (talk · contribs · count) will have a lot of fun with this new articles. Cleanup needed for Gigantes del Sur
I created Gigantes del Sur based on es:Gigantes del Sur. It needs some major cleanup and expansion. See the edit history for the original Spanish version and a rough translation before I removed all of the essay-like materials. Unfortunately that removal also took out a lot of the team's history.
If you can read Spanish, are familiar with Volleyball in Argentina, or are familiar with sports-related templates, your expertise is especially valuable. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 23:16, 17 October 2015 (UTC)
Volleyball tournaments names
Hi everyone. I made this section to ask everybody's opinion to know what's the best name for FIVB volleyball tournaments, for example for World Championship I know the official name is FIVB Men's/Women's World Championship but a user moved all men's pages to FIVB Men's Volleyball World Championship and now he is moving them to FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship and since he doesn't move women's pages, it made a mess. I'm not necessarily agree or disagree with these moves. I just want to settle this once and for all. the same goes for all FIVB tournaments like World League, World Grand Prix. World Cup and World Grand Champions Cup. Mohsen1248 (talk) 18:57, 2 November 2013 (UTC)
- Tornaments should use the official name, those changes have no sense at all! I agree reverting/modififying where necessary. Osplace 17:11, 3 November 2013 (UTC)
- So you think these are the best names:
- 2010 FIVB Men's/Women's World Championship
- 2010 FIVB Men's/Women's World Cup
- 2010 FIVB Men's/Women's World Grand Champions Cup
- 2010 FIVB World League
- 2010 FIVB World Grand Prix
- I hope we can have others opinion. I checked FIVB websites, I think it's not really clear what's their official name but based on their logos, it doesn't include the word "Volleyball". Mohsen1248 (talk) 01:17, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
- Yes the logo does includes the word volleyball under FIVB in both WGP and WL. Osplace 03:50, 4 November 2013 (UTC)
- How about underage World championship? in 2013 and before, the name used youth and junior, but 2015 used U18 U19 .... So, what should it be? Noncommittalp (talk) 00:55, 23 September 2015 (UTC)
- FIVB uses U: like, FIVB Volleyball Women’s U23 World Championship, you can take a look over here, and you will realize how they refer themselves about the under age competitions. Is very important to use just one set of names for all competitions. Meaning, we need to move some competitions. --Osplace 02:02, 24 September 2015 (UTC)
- But, the real name of all competitions before 2015 use youth and junior in official website, score sheet. So, keep the real name will give more information and more correctness, won't it? I think it show the change of each period of the competition. Overall is U18, U19,... ,but each old edition still use youth/junior. And, about african championship, CAVB use the name African nation championship. So keep the currect name in wiki or change. Noncommittalp (talk) 21:35, 27 September 2015 (UTC)
- Accuracy must not change. Keep old names, use the correct current names for all old and current competitions worldwide. Osplace 23:19, 2 October 2015 (UTC)

- The competition name was requested to be changed here, and aproved. Osplace 12:24, 6 October 2015 (UTC)

- FIVB call it "Age group" and you can take a look at the current official names over here. Osplace 19:06, 18 January 2016 (UTC)

I'm great at explaining volleyball, but a novice at wikipedia. I can rewrite sections of the volleyball page, but don't know where to go from there.
Volleyball stubs
Our WikiProject member Sander.v.Ginkel have been creating stubs about volleyball players. At the beginning everthing was nice and tidy, mostly because we show him the notability guide. Now we have, for example, Ana Mercado: Ana Mercado (born 19 February 1983) is a retired Mexican female volleyball player. She was part of the Mexico women's national volleyball team. According to Wikipedia:Notability and our volleyball players notability guide, there is not reason shown in this article related to the notability. Unless football, being part of the national team is not enough for being included here. Jacqueline Makokha is notable because of the olympics. The line about Ana Mercado says nothing about notability. She would not meet WP:ATHLETE not volleyball. Users DariaPolonia and Mohsen1248 have been expressing concerns about this issue, and I do back them completely. Stubs are welcome, but they must adhere to the existing policies. Osplace 13:32, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Osplace. Thanks for the message. Yes this is an important issue. I thought that all the players of the national that played in international competitions are notable. As volleyball don't have notability guideliness, and because at the request box at Wikipedia:WikiProject Volleyball#Minor Tasks is written as one of the 8 things to do: Create articles for current national team players on any National Team article, I started creating them. And I noticed most of the articles I created also have an article in a foreign wiki, so probably meet notability. But never mind, I think it's really importatant that notability guideliness for volleyball should be established. Afterwards unnotable articles I created must be deleted (or redirected to the National Team page!). By the way, I expanded the Ana Mercado article :). Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 14:52, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
- Osplace, I found this page User:Osplace/Volleyball notability. Can we make that one effective at WP:NSPORTS? To see articles I created; I almost created all of the national team players in Category:Volleyball squads, or see here. Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 15:57, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
- I can not find how a 4th, 7th or 9th place should be included in a palmares list. This is why we need righ away both, the notability and the layout being aproved ASAP. The previous discussions could not be finished. We need to reach a consensus in both items. My proposal for notability is written like the notability guide currently online here in Wikipedia. Please lets reopen the discussion somewere else, but here please Sander.v.Ginkel, some of your articles do not meet any notability guide, please stay between what we discussed before. Osplace 21:50, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

Statistics
Carloswiki123 (talk · contribs · count) is inserting a new statistics table. It is shown in both, the Áurea Cruz and Karina Ocasio articles. I would like to hear about this. Osplace 13:32, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
Matches and templates
I just saw that Template:Volleyballbox lists all sets row by row. To me that is "ugly" and we dont need a bunch of new rows all the time, is it really neccesary? Compare with Template:IceHockeybox where the "periods" are listed within a regular bracket on a single row instead. Any opinions? Qed237 (talk) 15:38, 27 April 2016 (UTC)
- If the match table display as the same, I have no problem. Noncommittalp (talk) 16:56, 27 April 2016 (UTC)
- @Noncommittalp: The only problem I see is that the set point totals might be missed. Qed237 (talk) 22:26, 27 April 2016 (UTC)
Tagging WP Volleyball
I made a list of all volleyball categories and made a bot request to tagg all the articles within these categories for WP Volleyball. Please see User talk:Yobot. I checked for wrong categories, but please take a look if you have time :) Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 16:39, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
- I just want to prod this and note that there's a list of categories that Sander.v.Ginkel has proposed adding Volleyball WP templates to at Wikipedia:Bot_requests#Tagg_talk_pages. I intend to file a BRFA within the next few days to complete that tagging, so if anyone objects, please speak up! I looked through the categories myself and they look to be good for tagging, but I encourage members of the project to look through them and let me know if any contain articles that should not receive project tags. Thanks! ~ RobTalk 00:09, 3 April 2016 (UTC)

Previous club squads
My edit of adding previous team sqauds to club team articles was reverted by DariaPolonia (see here, and here). Before starting an edit war I just want to discuss it here. My opinion is that previous squads have the same encyclopedic value as the current squad, as encyclopedic information is not time restricted. So my opinion is to keep the old squads on WP. It's a shame to delete every year all this kind of information. But as the article might become long, what about keeping the old squads like:
2013–14 season squad | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Shirt No | Nationality | Player | Birth Date | Height | Position |
1 | Russia | Andrey Zubkov | July 14, 1981 | 200 | Setter |
2 | Slovakia | Lukáš Diviš | February 20, 1986 | 201 | Outside hitter |
4 | Russia | Artyom Volvich | January 22, 1990 | 213 | Middle blocker |
5 | Russia | Anton Mysin | March 10, 1986 | 198 | Outside hitter |
7 | Russia | Arkady Kozlov | January 30, 1981 | 208 | Middle blocker |
8 | Russia | Pavel Moroz | February 26, 1987 | 205 | Opposite |
11 | Russia | Ilya Zhilin | May 10, 1985 | 198 | Outside hitter |
12 | Russia | Alexander Butko | March 18, 1986 | 199 | Setter |
13 | Russia | Valentin Golubev | May 3, 1992 | 187 | Libero |
15 | Cuba | Oreol Camejo | July 22, 1986 | 207 | Outside hitter |
16 | Russia | Anton Astashenkov | October 27, 1981 | 204 | Middle blocker |
17 | Russia | Nikolay Leonenko | December 19, 1984 | 201 | Outside hitter |
Thanks for your opinion, Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 20:49, 6 March 2016 (UTC)
- Okay, so I thinks it's nice idea. You know, if squads are from year after year not with long break between two season it's okay to see changes in squad. I'm not sure I explained it enough.
How about that:
Team roster - season 2013/2014 | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
No. | Name | Date of birth | Position | ||
1 | Andrey Zubkov | July 14, 1981 | Setter | ||
2 | Lukáš Diviš | February 20, 1986 | Outside hitter | ||
4 | Artem Volvich | January 22, 1990 | Middle blocker | ||
5 | Anton Mysin | March 10, 1986 | Outside hitter | ||
7 | Arkady Kozlov | January 30, 1981 | Middle blocker | ||
8 | Pavel Moroz | February 26, 1987 | Opposite | ||
11 | Ilya Zhilin | May 10, 1985 | Outside hitter | ||
12 | Alexander Butko | March 18, 1986 | Setter | ||
13 | Valentin Golubev | May 3, 1992 | Libero | ||
15 | Oreol Camejo | July 22, 1986 | Outside hitter | ||
16 | Anton Astashenkov | October 27, 1981 | Middle blocker | ||
17 | Nikolay Leonenko | December 19, 1984 | Outside hitter |
We don't need height because it's not the most important thing in tabel and I deleted age because when we have roster from 2007, current age is not needed. So, can we add my example? DariaPolonia (Talk) 22:22, 6 March 2016 (UTC)
- I figured out that from one year to another we should not delete the previous squads, like Pinkin de Corozal. The solution was another article, Pinkin de Corozal squads. Please do not just delete the previous year squads. Osplace 18:33, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
- The difference is that I used references and included team awards/qualification. Why, imagine we had then some red links, when the time is right I should find someone or try the whats links here and figure it out that player spent a given season with on club and at that time they won the league championship, with refences given I should just take that reference and include the information in the players article. Osplace 18:40, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

Medal tables
There is an increased use of Template:MedalTableTop in a wrong way, like the one shown here. The template clearly indicates that: allow editors to list an athlete or sportsperson's major medals at the top of their respective biography article(...). Is not intended for volleyball clubs, neither club competitions. This is a major concern. Osplace 15:57, 28 April 2016 (UTC)
- Only medals won for the national team should be there (WC, Continental, Olympics). No team wins. Those can be added in the prose and honour section. Kante4 (talk) 16:33, 28 April 2016 (UTC)
- Exactly, we want this information, but that is not the right way to include it. Osplace 22:50, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

Auto-assessment of article classes
Following a recent discussion at WP:VPR, there is consensus for an opt-in bot task that automatically assesses the class of articles based on classes listed for other project templates on the same page. In other words, if WikiProject A has evaluated an article to be C-class and WikiProject B hasn't evaluated the article at all, such a bot task would automatically evaluate the article as C-class for WikiProject B.
If you think auto-assessment might benefit this project, consider discussing it with other members here. For more information or to request an auto-assessment run, please visit User:BU RoBOT/autoassess. This is a one-time message to alert projects with over 1,000 unassessed articles to this possibility. ~ RobTalk 01:28, 4 June 2016 (UTC)
Template:Volleyballbox2 auto-bolding
I had a recent discussion with @Qed237: about revising the template mentioned in the subject that tackles auto-formatting of the winning team. The proposed revision takes care of bolding the winning team via the match score input.
The following were the points raised by Qed237 against the proposal and directly below each are my refutations.
- 1. Revising the template will disorganize the formatting applied on teams that are manually bolded.
- — Upon examination of the transclusion count of the template, almost all of the transclusion done was for the volleyball tournament in the Olympics, which has not yet started. So its safe to assume that no manual bolding is done to the teams.
- 2. "Perhaps teams should not be bolded at all.
- — One good side of bolding the winning team is that it gives a sort of contrast from the losing team. For readers that are skimming through the pages, its really helpful to easily distinguish the winning and the losing team.
- 3. Strange situations and future tournaments where bolding is not preferred.
- — a additional parameter, for example
boldteam= false (default value = true),
can be incorporated along with the proposal to suppress automatic bolding of the winning team if not preferred.
- — a additional parameter, for example
Overall, the primary purpose of this proposal is to ease and lessen editing for users. I have seen instances where editors made improper bolding. With the addition of auto-bolding, editors no longer need to deal with formatting the winning team. With all that said, I wish that the consensus approve of it. Thanks TjBison (talk) 03:19, 5 June 2016 (UTC)

Golden set option
Tagging contributors regarding the golden set scores and result. @Yrlyrl, Chris.astrtas565, GAV80, Batbobi, and Noncommittalp: I have develop and option to include golden set scores in the same table.
Date | Time | Score | Set 1 | Set 2 | Set 3 | Set 4 | Set 5 | Total | Report | ||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
18 Aug | 16:00 | Croatia | 2–3 | Bosnia and Herzegovina | 25–21 | 22–25 | 20–25 | 25–19 | 13–15 | 108–102 | Report |
24 Aug | 16:00 | Bosnia and Herzegovina | 2–3 | Croatia | 25–20 | 21–25 | 17–25 | 25–23 | 11–15 | 100–106 | Report |
Golden set | Bosnia and Herzegovina | 10–15 | Croatia |
I noticed that most of the European volleyball competition articles,which requires golden sets for tie-break, uses superscript note to denote golden set score and winner. In this table, the golden set parameter will be incorporated and is automatically suppressed if a golden set score is left empty.
I think that this format will sort of organize the details of each competition in lieu of subfooter notes. Any other ideas you can pitch in for improvement of this format will be appreciated.
P.S. disregard the contents of the tables as the main focus is to show the format with the golden set. :) TjBison (talk) 23:43, 30 June 2016 (UTC)

Recent edits from Carloswiki123
I would like to recall your attention about something like this edit. Do we really this to be shown in every volleyball player article? User Carloswiki123 (talk · contribs · logs) have been very busy with edits like this and now he came up with this idea of adding Pan American Games stats to every player. --Osplace 18:08, 7 July 2016 (UTC)

- Ok, nobody cares about it. Probably the outcome will be the same than DariaPolonia (talk · contribs · logs) fixes. Hope there is still time to revert. --Osplace 16:50, 13 July 2016 (UTC)

- You have changed the English Wikipedia Layout, you "fixed" a lot of articles, just because "you" were thinking is better that way. Tables
Hi everyone.
I have been working a lot with standings tables and I am one of the editors behind Module:Sports table. This module was created to reduce the use of multiple templates to create a standings table (a table often consisted of several templates) as well as making updating easier, tables more uniform and consistent across different sports on wikipedia, and also more MOS compliant.
Now I am looking at Volleyball, especially for Volleyball at the 2016 Summer Olympics, to make all the olympic tables similar, and I was wondering if there are some requests regarding the visual aspect of the volleyball table? It currently looks like Template:2016 Summer Olympics men's volleyball pool A standings while other sports look like Template:2016 Summer Olympics men's football group A standings so there are some differences.
Is "double headers" really needed or is "SF" (Sets for), "SA" (Sets against) and so on enough like other sports? In what order should the columns be? Is there something you want to change or keep in current table? Any input is helpful in adapting the module to your project. Qed237 (talk) 12:02, 18 April 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Qed237, thanks for the message! What I do miss in tables like this (and in general for team sports at the multi sports events) is pages to the Nation Olympic pages (like Brazil at the 2016 Summer Olympics). For individuals at the Olympics (like Ellen van Dijk (NED)) you can click to the person AND to the nation page. For team sports is different of course because the team sport and the olympic page is about the nation. But what about someting like:
Men's volleyball team (BRA) - (instead of Brazil)
Sander.v.Ginkel Thanks, (Talk) 12:16, 18 April 2016 (UTC)- @Sander.v.Ginkel: Currently there is a parameter called
|team_XXX=
(XXX is used to separate teams) that is used for what to display in that columns. The columnheader can be changed so it works for individuals as well by using for example|team_header=Player
. By setting|team_BRA={{fbo|BRA}}
in football tables we get Brazil. If you add something else to team_XXX parameter you get something else, for example|team_NED={{flagIOCathlete|[[Ellen van Dijk]]|NED|2012 Summer}}
would become Ellen van Dijk (NED). This is only about how we display teams and individuals and probably something that should be discussed at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Olympics, because the possibility in module already exists. Qed237 (talk) 12:30, 18 April 2016 (UTC)- @Qed237:, thanks, proposed it over there :) Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 12:36, 18 April 2016 (UTC)
- @Sander.v.Ginkel: If we move on from the team/player column, is there some other input regarding the module and using it for volleyball? Qed237 (talk) 13:35, 18 April 2016 (UTC)
- The only thing I would say is getting a consensus about the layout and merge different appropriate tempalates, in the way that Template:2016 Summer Olympics men's volleyball pool A standings (with templates "Vb cl3 header" and "Vb cl7 team") has the same layout at Template:2012 Summer Olympics men's volleyball pool A standings (with "Vb cl header" and "Vb cl4 team"). Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 14:05, 18 April 2016 (UTC)
- @Sander.v.Ginkel: The way I am thinking it would all be the same, but without the double header (currently extra header for Matches, Sets, and Points). And rank would become position. Qed237 (talk) 14:16, 18 April 2016 (UTC)

- @Sander.v.Ginkel: Currently there is a parameter called
- Current format like the official websites use, example pool ranking. The pool ranking criteria of volleyball also differ the time-limited sport which goal score and goal different are pool ranking criteria. Volleyball use the ratio, not different. So, I prefer keep the current format. Something I want to include is number of matches played like other sports. And, once I tried to use Brazil (BRA), but I was rejected.
I have a question why the Olympic competition pages have to use the templates for each matches' result and ranking table. The pages haven't had too much information. "The purpose of this template is to collect source text used in several articles in one place, in order to minimize maintenance and storage space." for volleyball pages, all of the result and pool ranking templates display only the competition page. So I think it's unnecessary. Noncommittalp (talk) 16:15, 18 April 2016 (UTC)- Click on the template page on what links here, and you'll see the template is also used at the nation pages. For the above mentioned London 2012 template see here Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 16:27, 18 April 2016 (UTC)
- Thank you. I also have another question. Why don't we use the result table like other volleyball competition pages? Noncommittalp (talk) 16:53, 18 April 2016 (UTC)
- @Noncommittalp: The ratio is not a problem, that functionality for having ratio instead if differential already exists. Do we really need a column for each result 3-0, 3-1... and so on? Also what do you mean in your last question? When the functionality has been fully developed it can be used on all volleyball articles. Qed237 (talk) 18:14, 18 April 2016 (UTC)

@Noncommittalp and Sander.v.Ginkel: Has the rules changed from sorting by points to use wins instead? Qed237 (talk) 21:22, 18 April 2016 (UTC)
- Yes, number of matches won, points, set ratio, point ratio, head to head. Noncommittalp (talk) 21:46, 18 April 2016 (UTC)
- @Noncommittalp: Great, and when I say that set ratio and point ratio are very easy to fix and the functionality already exists can you agree to use the module for tables? Or is there something else you dont like and needs to be fixed? I can make it look very similar to pool ranking but I dont think "result details" are needed and not the extra headers "matches", "sets" and "points" are needed. Qed237 (talk) 21:53, 18 April 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Qed237, I have a question. Would you also set the font-size to normal and default corresponding to the standings used in other sports? Raymarcbadz (Talk) 05:42, 19 April 2016 (UTC)
- @Raymarcbadz: Yes all standings tables will have same fontsize (100%). Qed237 (talk) 13:34, 19 April 2016 (UTC)
- I mean the current table is good for the Pool ranking criteria. In time-limited sports, the tables are also good for the Pool ranking criteria that has points, goal different, goal score, ... . In volleyball, the double-column-header relate to the criteria that I think readers can understand easier. We have match, pts, set, point, left to right follow the criteria. One thing that I think it should add is Pld like other table. And, I haven't understood why the time-limited sports' ranking tables put the pts to the last row. Is it the first criteria? Noncommittalp (talk) 14:31, 20 April 2016 (UTC)
- I dont think that we completely understand eachother. I will create a submodule in Module:Sports table for volloeyball, now it is a discussion of how you want it to look and what columns to use. Having points on the right is standard in so many sports, dont ask me why, it is just natural. Qed237 (talk) 16:24, 20 April 2016 (UTC)
Okay, new submodule has been developed and I have an example
- Old table
Rank | Team | Matches | Pts | Sets | Points | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
W | L | W | L | Ratio | W | L | Ratio | |||
1 | Brazil | 2 | 0 | 4 | 6 | 1 | 6.000 | 170 | 112 | 1.518 |
2 | United States | 1 | 1 | 3 | 4 | 3 | 1.333 | 150 | 132 | 1.136 |
3 | Team A3 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 6 | 0.000 | 74 | 150 | 0.493 |
4 | Team A4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | MAX | 0 | 0 | MAX |
5 | Team A5 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | MAX | 0 | 0 | MAX |
6 | Team A6 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | MAX | 0 | 0 | MAX |
- New table
Pos | Team | Pld | W | L | Pts | SW | SL | SR | SPW | SPL | SPR | Qualification |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Brazil | 2 | 2 | 0 | 4 | 6 | 1 | 6.000 | 170 | 112 | 1.518 | Quarter-finals |
2 | United States | 2 | 1 | 1 | 3 | 4 | 3 | 1.333 | 150 | 132 | 1.136 | |
3 | Team A3 | 2 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 6 | 0.000 | 74 | 150 | 0.493 | |
4 | Team A4 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | — | 0 | 0 | — | |
5 | Team A5 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | — | 0 | 0 | — | |
6 | Team A6 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 | — | 0 | 0 | — |
Rules for classification: 1) Matches won; 2) Points; 3) Set ratio; 4) Setpoint ratio; 5) Head-to-head record.
@Noncommittalp, Sander.v.Ginkel, and Raymarcbadz: What do you think now, when you can see an example? Anything that needs fixing and/or changed? Qed237 (talk) 12:02, 27 April 2016 (UTC)
@Kante4: You are regular editor of many articles including Olympics, what do you think? Qed237 (talk) 15:40, 27 April 2016 (UTC)
- For me, I prefer old one. Like I told you before, it's more related the volleyball's pool ranking criteria. I really don't like qualification column. The volleyball page use the qualification legend separate, and I think it's good. One legend for one section. Noncommittalp (talk) 16:15, 27 April 2016 (UTC)
- The new one is better as this should be used from now on. Have no problems with that. Kante4 (talk) 16:54, 27 April 2016 (UTC)
- @Noncommittalp: The qualification column will stay as it is MOS compliant (older table was not), because some readers are colorblind and we should not only use colors in a table to explain things. What else dont you agree with? All the columns in the old table exists in the new table so you can see all ranking criterias. Qed237 (talk) 22:22, 27 April 2016 (UTC)
- Very good, I like the new one, but we need to keep the module use to reduce the amount of time for updating result in every involved article. Osplace 02:49, 28 April 2016 (UTC)
- @Osplace: Not sure exactly what you mean, but the new module will of course be used in a template so it only needs to be updated once in one place, see {{2016 Summer Olympics men's water polo group A standings}} where module is in a template and we only need to update it there. Qed237 (talk) 11:13, 28 April 2016 (UTC)

Volleyball box
Hi, What does this project think about a new volleyball box? Currently Template:Volleyballbox is used but that box gets very "high" without much information, having one set per row and a lot of rows. Other sports with "sets" or "periods" I have seen, like hockey has something like Template:IceHockeybox, that is much clearer, but same information is still shown. I was planing to create a new box for Volleyball to match other sports, but thought I better see what editors here thinks.
Any thoughts? Qed237 (talk) 10:50, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
- I totaly agree :) Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 12:30, 30 April 2016 (UTC)
Anyone else with any thoughts, pinging other editors that has been involved in this talkpage and olympic pages. @Osplace, Kante4, and Noncommittalp: what do you think? Qed237 (talk) 15:18, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
- An example (sandbox?) would be nice. Have no idea what you are thinking of, tbh. Kante4 (talk) 15:42, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
- @Kante4: Okay, I am on it. Qed237 (talk) 15:46, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
- @Osplace, Kante4, Noncommittalp, and Sander.v.Ginkel: Example can be seen at Special:Permalink/718452234. I am also considering changing the "width" of the part on the right so that referees fit on one row. Qed237 (talk) 16:10, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
- For 5 set matches the difference gets bigger and when there are a lot of matches on top of eachother like in the Olympic we reduce the amount of rows. Qed237 (talk) 16:14, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
- Looks good for me. No space between scores, bold the winner and it's good. Kante4 (talk) 16:14, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
- @Kante4: Someone had messed up the fontsize in volleybox so not working. I fixed it now in sandbox and it is same as hockeybox. See Special:Permalink/718453971. Any ideas on how I should proceed. Call this new one for "volleyballbox2" and say the original "volleyballbox" is deprecated? Remove "volleyballbox" from Category:Sports match box templates and add "volleyballbox2" instead? (Unless someone opposes of course). Qed237 (talk) 16:22, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
- Looks better the new box :). The only additional option I can think of is the option to add an image of the game. Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 16:24, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
- @Sander.v.Ginkel: No, we should have no images on that template. Images ilustrating articles should be used [[File:gold.jpg|thumb|right|150px|Gold.]] in an appropiate way. Take for example the GA article 2015 Tour de Yorkshire, but it includes text and we use no text at all. We should one day include text in our articles. Osplace 18:14, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
- Yep, no pics. Kante4 (talk) 18:26, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
- Maybe you should consider 'MVP' as additional option? DariaPolonia (talk) 20:32, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
- I could, but it has not been used in other match boxes as far as I know. Is it really needed? Qed237 (talk) 18:41, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
- Sometimes is useful to know who was MVP in finale for example. But maybe somebody else should say his/her opinion. DariaPolonia (talk) 20:55, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
- Match MVP? We are setting up the Olympics. There is an awards section. There is no match mvp. Osplace 19:15, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
- It we update/create a new box it should be used in more than one competition. Qed237 (talk) 19:22, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
- You do not understand at all. We do have standards. Yes, templates should be used everywhere. Is there any high level competition with match mvp? There is not. We do have World Championships and Olympics as models and examples for everything else. Osplace 19:25, 3 May 2016 (UTC)

(Unless someone opposes of course). Qed237 (talk) 16:22, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
- Looks good for me. No space between scores, bold the winner and it's good. Kante4 (talk) 16:14, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
I dont do much work in volleyball, but in football there are a lot of tournaments with MVP for each match. Just because Olympic games and world championship does not have it, does not mean it should not be shown in other competitions. Qed237 (talk) 19:34, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
- Exactly, but this box is for volleyball, am I right? There is not such award in volleyball, we do not need that. We use a separate section for awards. Volleyball uses awards at the end of competitions or professional seasons. Spanish league uses weekly mvp, but is the only one I know. FIVB system used in main competitions, continental championships and regional games do not include ever match mvp. Are you going to be working in a separate one for matchs with match mvps? --Osplace 19:51, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
- No it will all be in the same template, but it is easy to add MVP as parameter that is never shown unless being called. I juat want to know if it will be called or if it will be a useless parameter that is never used. Qed237 (talk) 19:53, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
- No MVP, it's useless. Kante4 (talk) 03:56, 4 May 2016 (UTC)

@Qed237 and Osplace:So, should we use it (if finished)? Kante4 (talk) 21:26, 22 May 2016 (UTC)
- @Kante4: I have been overloaded with work (now that all football leagues is coming to an end) so I have not had the time to create it yet, but the code is ready in Template:Volleyballbox/sandbox (sandbox of the old template). I am all for using it (and had planned to introduce it when I had the time), so if you feel like you have the time please go ahead and create a template. Just one suggestion, in Special:Permalink/718453971, which is not really permanent since I call a template, the referees does not fit on one row, so my suggestion is to make the right column a bit wider. I think both the team and score column can be a bit smaller. Qed237 (talk) 21:32, 22 May 2016 (UTC)
- No problem. Can't we use just simply use referees without the "()"? Kante4 (talk) 21:36, 22 May 2016 (UTC)
- @Kante4: Is there always more than one referee? Anyway what do you think now if you look at Special:Permalink/718453971? Are the widths okay? Qed237 (talk) 21:42, 22 May 2016 (UTC)
- @Qed237: In those tournament we cover, yes. Osplace has more input about that but i never saw less than one. Width looks good. Kante4 (talk) 21:45, 22 May 2016 (UTC)
- @Qed237: Yes, they are always two. I would like to suggest the "()" keep existance. That is, if we are talking about the referees nat. The columns for the referees in the new volleyball box look very good. Nothing further, --Osplace 17:56, 23 May 2016 (UTC)
- @Qed237 and Osplace: The "()" should stay for nations, just not at the word "referee". Kante4 (talk) 19:25, 24 May 2016 (UTC)
- @Qed237 and Kante4: Yes, now I can understand what you mean, there is no referee(s), because we know for sure that there are always two of them. They are just for nations (MEX). Good to go! --Osplace 20:47, 24 May 2016 (UTC)

@Qed237 and Osplace: So, we use the one for the Olympics? I would say yes. Kante4 (talk) 14:07, 25 May 2016 (UTC)
- @Osplace and Kante4: I would also say yes, definately use that one for olympics. Had planned to create it this week, but unforseen events happened yesterday and today so it will have to wait until tonight or possibly tomorrow, unless you want to create it yourself now. Qed237 (talk) 14:12, 25 May 2016 (UTC)
@Osplace and Kante4: All of the Olympic volleyballmatches has now been updated to use this new volleybox, {{Volleyballbox2}}. Feel free to check for errors, but it should be okay. I also created matches for the women as it made no sense to have one display for men and an other for women (they has table of results). Finally I took the liberty to add the seeds in the bracket, which good be good info in the first round (not all rounds), and with that all sports may use the Module:RoundN for brackets. Please comment on that as well. Qed237 (talk) 13:55, 26 May 2016 (UTC)
- Good job. I don't think the seeds need to be there. Kante4 (talk) 16:11, 26 May 2016 (UTC)
- @Qed237, Kante4, and Noncommittalp: Very good! When the time is right, countries articles must be filled with games, squads and pool standings templates. --Osplace 16:40, 26 May 2016 (UTC)
- @Osplace, Kante4, Qed237, and TjBison:I suspected why the total scores didn't include in the template. It is one of pool ranking criteria. It appear in every statistic reports. Now, in football rugby sevens, and handball, we have half time scores. In, basketball and water polo, we have quarter scores. All have total scores. But, volleyball doesn't. The half time scores and quarter scores relate to pool ranking criteria as same as volleyball does. In the first time, we want to make all team sports' boxes the same looking, but now, it isn't.
My question are:
- Why new volleyball can't show the total points like other team sports, even though the others relate as same as volleyball?
- The other sports like water polo and basketball bold the number in the teams won in every quarter. So, will volleyball bold every sets? if not, why?
- Now, the templates of team sports still are different in detail like this. Why can't I keep total scores, and bold match scores?
Thank you. Noncommittalp (talk) 15:23, 6 August 2016 (UTC)

Olympic volleyball colored backgrounds
Hi, I was thinking about removing the colored backgrounds featured in each match in the olympic volleyball articles. These backgrounds are currently in the colors #eeffff and #eeeeee (intercalating), but they look horrible (at least to me) and there is no need to separate each match using this system; volleyball is also the only team sport still doing this for the 2016 olympics. I wanna know your opinion about it. Arielslytherin (talk) 03:29, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
- Agree. Make it like others. Noncommittalp (talk) 03:49, 8 August 2016 (UTC)
Recent edits from 94.155.238.11
I don't know if this is the right place to bring this discussion, but I would like to recall your attention about some recents edits made by 94.155.238.11 (talk · contribs · logs) like this one in 2016 World League, this in World Grand Prix, 2015 World Cup and Women's World Cup among others. So, as you can see, the content in each article summary was removed leaving merely one or two lines of information, only the dates and countries when/where the tournament was played (it shouldn't be like this, the lead is the first part of the article that most people will read and for many it may be the only section that they read).
In the 2016 World League and Grand Prix pages, some of you even helped me with that, this action was performed several times and I personally reverted the edits arguing that the content was indeed relevant and the article's lead should summarize the main events that happened in the competition, like the winners and the most valuable player award and so on... (this already happens in every major sport competition, why would it be different in wikipedia volleyball?) The problem is aggravating now with the same thing being made in other past competitions, like in the 2010 men's and women's world championship (once again, I reverted the edits). Unfortunatelly, this became a kind of edit war, something I'd like to avoid now and in the future.
Therefore, I'd like to know your ideas and opinions about this issue and how to prevent similar situations. Don't you agree that the article lead should summarize more than merely the dates and country the tounament was played on? Arielslytherin (talk) 02:35, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
- I agree with you. Noncommittalp (talk) 11:26, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
- I agree as well. However, previous editions don't have any summary, so this is the reason - why change it now ? If you want to have a summary, then can you please add summary for the previous editions ? I will have no problem with that if you do. I would like for all editions to have the same structure. 94.155.238.11 (talk) 13:29, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
- My dear Bulgarian friend, when something have to be done, you are welcome to start doing it, we call it the WP:BOLD policy. Changes must be done for better, if we started having better articles, why should be go back? We are improving, using WP:LEAD in a right way, we have set a new standard and we have to change the previous articles. About time zone, all of you please read MOS:TIMEZONE, it is not about the one I would like it to have, there is a policy. --Osplace 14:20, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
- @Osplace:About zone time, It about a single event which happened in one place, right? But, the World league and World grand prix are different. Osplace, do you know how I ask to discuss that section of policy. Second, I changed beach volleyball Olympic page with the same pool ranking box that Tjbison did. Is it OK? Third, User:Tim that make category year in women's volleyball. How do you think about? Noncommittalp (talk) 14:49, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
- No, is not about one single event happenning in one place, plese read the whole policiy, in your favor there is the section MOS:DATERET, but take time reading more. The other items are not subjects of this discussion. --Osplace 15:29, 2 August 2016 (UTC)

- OK, got it. I will do in 2017 Noncommittalp (talk) 15:53, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
Yes, I agree @Osplace:. It just seemed strange to me that previous editions didn't have summary, and now we change structure of pages. Does that mean that if I decide to add summary for the previous editions, it will be ok ? I have nothing against the text itself, I just wanted the same structure for all pages. And about time zones, I don't think adding GMT was a great idea, because matches on the same day in a certain country would show as matches on different days according to GMT. But even if we accept GMT, @Noncommittalp: didn't add GMT in the previous editions, which is a little confusing. 94.155.238.11 (talk) 21:09, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
- As we have clarified here @Arielslytherin, Noncommittalp, and 94.155.238.11:, all those removal of content must be undone. Some have already happened, but more is needed. We are moving forward in the direction of creating better articles, some of the better content we have is that the lead now summarize the article content, following the WP:LEAD policy. Other articles should be modified to adress the lack of appropiate lead section, or the correction of any other missing point. We all want all the article to follow the same layout, including a proper use of MOS:TIMEZONE, if is not correctly done before. It means, as following the lead policy we include summary, the same way we should include the necessary correction in terms of timezone, in all articles. --Osplace 23:33, 2 August 2016 (UTC)
I have no opinion on the IP's edits, but the article is now broken. 2016 FIVB Volleyball World League shows a bunch of "The time allocated for running scripts has expired" errors. The problem seems to be {{Vb res 51}} which uses complex wikitext to create table items—it seems to take too long to execute. If it were possible to describe in straightforward language what that template is trying to do, I might reproduce it in a module that would eliminate the problem. Olympic data
Can someone take a look at Talk:Volleyball at the 2016 Summer Olympics – Women's team rosters. Wrong data of players. Thanks, Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 02:33, 19 August 2016 (UTC)
Medal icons in result boxes
There is a discussion at Olympics project regarding match templates and medal icons, i.e. if they should be shown (diff) or not shown (diff).
This affects volleyball as well so please join at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Olympics#Medal icons on team sport templates
Someone created junior national team article.
I found a user created junior team article for Canada in 2015 U21 WCH article. Once I remember that I'm not sure Turkey U23 or U20 women article was created and was rejected here. So, about Canada junior team should be rejected or not? Noncommittalp (talk) 18:23, 22 August 2016 (UTC)

About 1000 professional volleyball images can be uploaded!
The Iranian Tanim News website uses the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. The webiste has albums of a lot of sports events with also many volleyball competitions. The images are of Iranian volleyball matches, but because they play against many teams over the years, I think it's worth to upload all the images to Wikimedia Commons so they can be used in the Volleyball articles. An of uploaded images are Commons:Category:2016 Summer Olympics, Iran v Egypt, 13 August 2016. I don't have time to do it myself, but to start with I made an overview of the several volleyball albums.
See User:Sander.v.Ginkel/TasnimNewsImages.
Hopefully people are willing to upload the imags. Would be a great contribution! Thanks, Sander.v.Ginkel (Talk) 08:46, 13 September 2016 (UTC)
Notability
What are the notability requirements for volleyball articles? I'm planning in creating articles for Paulina Prieto Cerame and Aiyana Whitney but I can't find the requirements. Seriesphile (talk · ctb) 01:35, 16 September 2016 (UTC)
- WP:SPORTCRIT must be applied since we have not yet agreed a volleyball notability guide. We had had discussed in the past, but no consensus were reached. I hope that discussion is retaken and consensus reached, we really need that. So far we have not discussed college volleyball players. Osplace 02:01, 16 September 2016 (UTC)
Filipino navigational box
Filipino volleyball have been expanding in recent years. The FIVB taken into account that and gave them the 2016 FIVB Volleyball Women's Club World Championship and they will be participating with a team created just for the competition. Similarly, Filipino volleyball articles have been expanding without any comments and they look, lets say different. Please take a look to this template articles and check wether our league, clubs, etc. are way different even when this is the same english wikipedia. May the 2016 FIVB Club World Championship help us parter with them and work together to solve our differences. I would like to point out that they are already infiltrating the world championship article with their templates, like this new one: FIVB navigational boxes. Are we going to be using that template in the world championship? --Osplace 14:37, 27 July 2016 (UTC)
- I have been around and removed some medal templates, like the template indicates is for national competitions, not being used for club competitions, probably imitating DariaPolonia (talk · contribs · logs) behavior. For example, Cristiano Ronaldo article show medals about winning the Euro, not the Champions league. Similarly, this is wrong here with club competitions medals.
- Most Filipino article are too much colorful. Bold policy is not understood, WP:BOLDITIS. Most of the editors do not know what the WP:LEAD means.

- Please do not include flags inside the infobox per WP:INFOBOXFLAG. The correct use of Template:MedalCompetition is about individuals or national teams representin its country, is not intended for volleyball leagues. There is a problem with the clubs items, clubs are mean to be amateur or professional clubs, not the team you play while in college or school. Filipinos editors are very excited about "their" articles and work on it really well, but sometimes it is too much "new". The articles should be standard like this Project agreed on. Kante4 (talk) 09:13, 2 October 2016 (UTC)
- Commenting on the navbox, I agree its kinda pointless to include a roster template which includes each of the players' club where it would be obvious that all players would belong to a single club such as in the case of Template:2016 FIVB-Rexona Ades roster. This would be more appropriate for national teams where players may likely belong to different clubs or to the Philippine Super Liga All-Stars, a league selection formed for the 2016 FIVB Women's Club Championship. However for uniformity, the current state of 2016 FIVB Volleyball Women's Club World Championship squads is preferable.
I will also remark how the templates are similar to the basketball rosters. The schools and colleges are likely listed by the originator of the template due to importance and popularity of collegiate volleyball in the country.Hariboneagle927 (talk) 00:32, 4 October 2016 (UTC)
- We as a WikiProject that work together, and our first goal is "Standardize the appearance and layout of volleyball related articles." This FIVB Club World Championship is a great opportunity to work together. There is no Filipino volleyball article outside English Wikipedia and all volleyball article must look similar across the English Wikipedia. That is why there we are here discussing your navbox. We have already discussed squads templates. Filipino clubs must use the ones we are currently using until a new one is approved.
- Is the same with your athletes articles. There are some articles with disputed notability. Most of the biographies still need work. There is no Filipino volleyball style and the rest of English Wikipedia, that is the reason you are noticing some changes. Michele Gumabao and Alyssa Valdez are some examples of really hard work that still needs to be done, while Aleona Denise Santiago is an example of the cleaning work.
- We want you to work with us from now on, because we know that you really love volleyball, as much as we do. --Osplace 02:22, 4 October 2016 (UTC)

- Pinespunned (talk · contribs · logs) that navbox do not need development and is not planned, is being spread in all the Filipinos clubs articles. Please read the whole discussion. We are glad that volleyball is growing your country. This WikiProject aim to standardize the articles. You cannot made up a template and use it in all Filipino articles. All volleyball articles across English Wikipedia should look the same. We are already using squads in a way, you have been too. But then suddenly Mmhuang (talk · contribs · logs) made up to use the basketball template and tried to use it to change the 2016 FIVB Volleyball Women's Club World Championship squads. We do not need a new one, is very intricate and difficult to implement, too many details. We would have to change all articles just because you want your volleyball article to look like your basketball articles.--Osplace 14:32, 6 October 2016 (UTC)
