Minor issue
editI do believe "fuck" found in the sixth sentence of "The Wikipedia Game" subsection in the "Websites for Wikiracing" section is a minor grammatical error. As a result, I do suggest a registered editor to fix the issue.

Rules are too stringent
editI been playing the game on the computer in my school (which is good) some of the links when i click comes up with a download box i.e. asks you to download a random file. is it possible to add a section stating the exceptions at last resort this would sort out dead links.
there is one occasion where i have technically won but the links do not match this is because the end target article is KBIZ but on the ottumwa, iowa it gave me the red-linkKBIZ-AM as you can see it doesn't. do i still win? --Antelope (talk) 15:34, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
rule Clarification?
editcan you edit the page? This does not always require clicking on a link outside the article. you can often just double click on the article if your logged in and have your pref. set?
- I don't know what the inventors think about it, but I think it wouldn't be ok. For if you edit a page to get to your Homing Page, everyone is back after three or four clicks. Besides you would damage Wikipedia by inserting nonsense links in random articles.
- As i am a inventor i am a gay batty boy, I will say, no, this is not allowed. - Che Nuevara: Join the Revolution 16:57, 6 February 2006 (UTC)
It does involve using a text entry which is not allowed.
An alternative "game" would be to find the 2 pages that are farthest apart on wikipedia.
What if the random page you get as your homming page is an orphan page? For example I just clicked Random Page and I got Molten Sea, which has only one incomming link, from Wikipedia:Orphaned Articles/M-Z. If the orphaned article was added since the last dump and orphan detection then you could start on an article that had no incomming links. . . . Jim 22:05, 22 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Similarly I landed at disambiguation page with no incomming links, other than from that category. Thryduulf 13:17, 25 june 1763 (UTC)
- A page with no incoming links is clearly not valid as the homing page. But as long as it has outgoing links, it can be used as the "start" page. - Che Nuevara: Join the Revolution 16:57, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

Ctrl+F
the way we play, you cannot use Ctrl+F, this way a "scanning" skill is required, and one is more likely to click on a less relevant link, making the game more interesting. This is the way the game should be played. At least, I think so.

Variations
editIn college, we'd have contests to see who could get from, say, disney.com to *ahem* inappropriate content the quickest, and with the fewest clicks. If I recall correctly, somebody was able to go from disney.com to playboy.com in something like 4 clicks. With the same idea, you could just select two random wiki pages and have a contest to get from one to the other (thus avoiding getting a 3rd party to click 10 links and clearing the browser history). That would be challenging but sometimes impossible (i really wonder how often - I bet less often than you'd expect). Would be easier to run that one as a timed event instead of a number of clicks. --Drue 21:41, 22 Nov 2004 (UTC)
N Degrees of separation
editIsn't this exactly like Wikipedia:N degrees of separation? Jaberwocky6669 19:31, 5 October 2005 (UTC)
- No. N-degrees is a quasi-study. This is a competitive game, purely for shits and giggles. - Che Nuevara: Join the Revolution 16:55, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

Are you allowed to click on the link Articles?--75.37.84.30 03:24, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
This is weird; my friends and I have been playing this for about two years now. We once had a tournament in a computer lab. Here are our rules for advanced play: 1. No Keyboard use allowed (esp. CTRL+F or editing a page) 2. No Backtracking 3. No Nations or Continents 4. No Years (e.g. 1986) 5. If you click to a dead end you lose. 6. The winner is the first to find the end site, not the fewest clicks. 7. The start and goal pages are made by two seperate competitors in silence, and their choices are disclosed simultaneously. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Amiaheroyet (talk • contribs) 10:20, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
Original Concept
editI independently conceived of The Wikipedia Game in July of 2005 while doing summer research at JPL in a group of undergrads. We would often kill time and procrastinate on analyzing Mars Orbiter Camera images by playing The Game. The article in its present form does not cite the original inventors nor the time of invention at Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tennessee. So yeah. If the Vanderbilt Version was conceived before the JPL Version, then I would just like to see a date added. If, however, my JPL Version precedes the Vanderbilt Version then a revision is necessary. Contact me at ckleinastro@gmail.com if you would like more specifics about my inventing The Game. --Added 11/12/08, 2:15 PM PST.
Ditto; me and my friend would play this in I.T. 2005. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.72.203.93 (talk) 00:06, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

Origin?
editI'm doubting the so-called origin of the game, namely the "...Isaac Roxburgh, and some of his lackeys including Nat Corrigan and Lachlan Ray" part. I assume that I am not alone in this? Sp3z1aL (talk) 17:49, 29 December 2009 (UTC)

How to
editWP:NOTHOWTO the whole thing is just an explanation of how to play. Also is it really notable? WikipediaUserCalledChris (talk) 08:59, 21 December 2016 (UTC) WikipediaUserCalledChris (talk) 08:59, 21 December 2016 (UTC)
- Again, I'm no expert, but I think that the correct answer is that this page is in the Wikipedia namespace (as evidenced by the "Wikipedia:" prefix), which is for "administration pages with information or discussion about Wikipedia",[1] so it's not an article (articles have no prefix and are in the mainspace[a]), so many of the rules for regular articles don't apply, including WP:NOTHOWTO — some of the most important articles in the Wikipedia namespace are how-to guides, such as Wikipedia:Your first article and Wikipedia:Tutorial (though maybe these are not quite the same thing as what you were getting at).[b]

- P.S.: Nice double signature.
Notes
- ^ "Pages within the 'Project namespace' themselves are not part of the encyclopedia proper."[1]
- ^ Not to mention the many essays in the Wikipedia namespace that are a far cry from the standards of an actual article, including humorous ones such as the List of bad article ideas and Don't delete the main page (readers of those articles: have fun breaking yourself out of the ensuing WikiSurfing endeavors).

Merger proposal
edit- The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
- The result of this discussion was merge. Crunchydillpickle🥒 (talk) 18:29, 31 October 2023 (UTC)
I propose to merge Wikipedia:Wikirace into this page (Wikipedia:Wiki Game). This page was created first, is much better-formatted and explained, and sees consistently 4-5x more pageviews. I think the other article provides a few great additional resource the other one does not have: (1) good target pages, (2) strategies, (3) the title/WP:RACE shortcut, (4) sometimes nicer instructions (not always). I believe by merging the great parts of that article into this one, we could provide one comprehensive resource that best serves the community. What do other editors/watchers of this page think? I've placed a message on the other page's talk page as well to generate the best discussion possible. —Shrinkydinks (talk) 06:40, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
- Agree The two articles seem to have very similar content and purpose. Just a comment, from my experience, the game is better known as Wikirace so kinda surprised that Wiki Game gets more page views. But I'm sure that isn't a problem a redirect can't solve. Flyme2bluemoon (talk) 22:11, 17 January 2022 (UTC)
- Agree As well. Lets name the Wiki Game and let the other go. Mitchobrian (talk) 09:38, 30 March 2022 (UTC)
- I definitely agree a wiki race is just a competitive form of a wiki game and the articles are very similar. The wiki race article should just be added as part of the types of wiki games along with 5 clicks to jesus and the likes. HuffGLaDTem (talk) 13:55, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
- Agree 83.9.193.123 (talk) 19:59, 30 May 2022 (UTC)
Note: I checked both pages' XTools Page Histories but was unable to find any frequent contributors on either page or substantial contributors with recent contributions. Shrinkydinks (talk) 06:53, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
- It should be considered to join this article with Wikipedia:Wikirace -- it essentially talks about the same thing. - Cervisiarius (talk) 16:56, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
- Just to start off the conversation, I've moved this comment here which was placed on this page 12 years ago. I do believe the circumstances have changed around the two pages since that time but believe it demonstrates longstanding interest in a merger of some kind. —Shrinkydinks (talk) 06:43, 11 May 2020 (UTC)
- A merge sounds good - but I think the "List of Good Target Pages" in the wikirace one should be in the merged article. Escpiecially since this is in the Wikipedia namespace instead of just being a regular article. AltoStev Talk 02:27, 10 June 2020 (UTC)
- I'm also in agreement. That article lists good target pages, and I find myself coming back to that one because of it but otherwise it's just a less clear version of the first article. For clarification, is the title of the merged articles going to be Wikirace or Wiki Game? 〜 ♥ (˘꒳˘ ) Teafed, (she/her) (talk) 21:28, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
I definitely agree, this is pretty much a duplicate article. BlueBanana (talk) 13:00, 8 January 2022 (UTC)
I, too, am in agreement. The articles are so similar that I didn't even know that one existed. They should be merged. WikiRegularAtSchool (talk) 14:27, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
- Agree I agree that two article with the same goal (clicking on a link to reach the target article) should not exist, they are nearly same with some links to Wikipedia pages. transferring content to Wiki Game from Wikirace would be a good. Rocky 734 (talk) 08:15, 4 May 2022 (UTC)
- Agree Yeah, it's the same thing. MinecratloVer (talk) 23:23, 16 May 2022 (UTC)
- I'm a little late. But I agree Eric Anthony Ty (talk) 09:34, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
- Agree Do merge them together. I guess the "Wiki Game" sounds more popular, however. I would merge the two chunks content and link the bits of content together. Would advise to sandbox the new merged article first, however. No matter how much we would agree with merging the two articles, I still think making the draft of the merge is still very important. Qwertyxp2000 (talk | contribs) 08:51, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
- {{Agree}], as both titles mean essentially the same game. Consider even making WP:Wiki Ladders a subsection of the Wikipedia Game. InvadingInvader (userpage, talk) 15:36, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
- Agree Please do it! Crunchydillpickle🥒 (talk) 02:33, 31 October 2023 (UTC)
First go at this game I got a probably impossible target
editMy first time of trying this game I got: FROM: Renault D-Type engine, TO: Đông Thái village. Turns out that there were 2 articles for the same village (and various other related errors). In 7 clicks I got to the other article. My target article did not have any links from actual articles. FrankSier (talk) 21:52, 13 August 2020 (UTC)
