WTF?

For some unknown reason, a lot of people seem to think that this page is a good place to put advertisements for their pet projects. Can anyone explain this phenomenon? - Frankie1969 (talk) 13:56, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

I was wondering why you thought here was a good place to ask that question you just asked. uKER (talk) 11:30, 28 June 2009 (UTC)

Tag filter

The form has an input field of "Tag filter". Are there any notes on what this is for and how it may be used? Examples preferred! Jan1naD (talkcontrib) 11:55, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

The word "Tag" is linked to Special:Tags. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:11, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I've looked there, but I still don't know how one would use it. Jan1naD (talkcontrib) 14:30, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
Enter one of the tags from the tag name column in the tag field. For example, enter blanking at Special:RecentChanges to get edits which were tagged with blanking. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:39, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
Of course it also works for individual users but there are usually few or no tagged edits. Try blanking at Special:Contributions/66.20.39.193 for an example with 3 hits. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:43, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. I tried the example you gave and now I understand. However, when tried against my (untagged!) username the query just went to sleep (no response after 120 seconds). Jan1naD (talkcontrib) 14:48, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
Maybe it took more than 60 seconds but I eventually got "No changes were found matching these criteria" when searching blanking at Special:Contributions/Jan1nad. Your appear to have no tags of any kind. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:00, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

User contributions to a specific page

Recently, I remember seeing a special page that allowed me to display a list of contributions that a specific user made to a page starting with "foo". I can't remember what it is. This would be useful to bring up records of my own edits to specific articles. Can anyone help? ~Amatulić (talk) 23:59, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

Searching from year/month (and later) filter?

Hi. I looked around, but didn't see any mention of this, so if this has already been discussed, please just point me to the existing conversation and I'll take it from there. When trying to track down IP-hopping vandals (in particular, those situations where someone may be physically moving from computer to computer, such as among a group of computers in a public library, for example), I'd like to be able to limit my edit search to only the most recent edits. In other words, the "From year (and earlier), From month (and earlier)" filters really don't do me much good. Also, I'm not sure how the edits are indexed within the WP database, but I would imagine that the proposed "(and later)" switch would use less resources than the existing "(and earlier)" switch. Perhaps both switches could be offered as radio buttons, with the default set to whichever one is more popular or less resource-intensive. Cheers! -- Bgpaulus (talk) 21:21, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

Add a Hatnote

Judging by the Feedback page, a lot of people seem to come here looking for information about creating a new article. Perhaps a hatnote should be added to send them to Wikipedia:Articles for creation. Astronaut (talk) 09:54, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

What is Electronic Banking Crimes?

Even though the Term “Electronic Banking Crimes” is not defined, Literally, crime is an offence against a public law or an action that is deemed injurious to the public welfare or morals or to the interests of the state and that is legally prohibited. Hence, Electronic Banking Crimes can be described as any type of crime or illegal act, targeted towards Electronic Banking transactions, which adversely affects the security of transactions or sensitive data, for any kind of illegal gain or benefit, either monetary or otherwise, resulting in any loss to a bank or a customer of a bank.

What happened with this option? As I recall, there was an option that separate list of files uploaded by users could be seen together with user contributions. Why this option was removed and is there a chance that it is turned on again? PANONIAN 08:32, 12 June 2011 (UTC)

4. Privacy

Deletion of IP address (but not the history) after 1.5 years would be preferable. Many of us are behind proxies and/or have dynamic IP addresses so they don't care what they post anyhow.

Also, law enforcement should not have a perpetual record of a crime committed with someone's stolen account, for example. 1.5 Years is plenty enough time for law enforcement, it's what Google and Yahoo BOTH do. I see edits not by me credited to my IP address

I don't know why that is. On my last computer there were vandalisms on it that got me several temporary bans. I figured I'd been hacked or something. Freakily, I see contributions credited to the IP address I'm on now that are older than my compter is the first place, so that the IP address shouldn't have even existed then. Transfer of edits to another account

Feature request: view edits that are responses to my recent edits

I'd like a view "User contributions; show only edits that are not latest revisions", ordered by date of my edit. That way, if I edited 'soccer' 5yrs ago and 'tennis' last week, and each page has had daily changes, I'll see the change to 'tennis' listed long before 'soccer'. This is useful since it helps me check if people have edited (or reverted) the change I just made recently. Note that this is rather non-standard sorting, and not a natural fit for the preceding feature suggestion. [I guess an ideal search would be 'show me any changes to the exact paragraphs I changed', but that's much harder to implement efficiently. This request is feasible and still very useful.]

One concern is that it might increase edit-wars if people can easily detect when others have modified their recent changes, but I suspect this wouldn't be too common. And the plus side is that if somebody reverts/edits a change of mine that I disagree with, I'll go to greater pains to support/explain the topic.

Feature request: Only show edits that are latest contributions

Similar to:

As an alternative to the two similar requests linked above, I suggest including a new checkbox option called "Only show edits that are latest contributions" in the User Contributions special page. Checking this checkbox should show a list of only the latest contributions to each page in the contribution list, instead of all the contributions. Of course, the (top) contributions should be marked as such, but they should not be filtered out unless "Only show edits that are latest revisions" is checked.

For example, take an user who contributes to three pages A, B and C. The numbers of contributions are 12, 28 and 3 respectively. Only the contributions to A and B are latest revisions.

  • Normally, the user contributions page will show all 43 edits in their reverse chronological order.
  • When "Only show edits that are latest revisions" is checked, only the latest contributions to A and B are shown. That is, only 2 edits are shown, because they are also the (top) revisions.
  • When "Only show edits that are latest contributions" is checked (from normal state), the latest contributions to all the three pages are to be shown. That is, 3 edits are shown as they are the latest, regardless of whether they are (top) or not.

Tip: Instead of two checkboxes, you can also have one checkbox labelled "Only show edits that are" and followed by a drop-down combo box with items "latest revisions" and "latest contributions". (The word "latest" is suggested to be included in the combo box as it makes the options more meaningful as complete phrases.) -- ADTC Talk Ctrb . 07:25, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

Additional notes: I have created a Javascript (for use in my account) to do the above described, however it only does the processing on what is already displayed on page (cannot do any server-side processing). You can see the Javascript at User:Agent007bond/common.js -- ADTC Talk Ctrb . 13:21, 5 December 2011 (UTC)
You know, I'd love to have the opposite - "Only show edits that are not the latest revisions". In this way, I can see what I've recently edited that was subsequently edited by someone else, without having to add every page I edit to the watchlist. User contributions format has changed?

The "User contributions" page format seems to have changed from when this page was written. The format used to be:

Now it is:

<timestamp> (diff | hist) .. (<charCountChange>) . . <page name> <commit comment>

Claiming contributions made before account creation

I haven't heard of considerations to bring it back. If you don't want to hide your IP address for privacy reasons then you can mention the connection on the talk or user pages of your IP and account. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:29, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

are you sure? I find this a bit daft — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sypashley (talkcontribs) 14:56, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

Would it be possible to modify this page so you could limit the search to a range of dates. That becomes especially useful when looking for edits coming from a range of IP addresses. Usually such a search produces an unmanageable list of results. Date limits would limit the results so you could identify related edits coming from an IP range.

Thanks --SteveMcCluskey (talk) 19:37, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

Can't find

I have looked a few user pages and can't see a link to a user contribution page in any of the menus at top, left or bottom of the page, every user page seems to have a unique layout but on none of them can I see a link to their contributions. 86.136.104.132 (talk) 18:29, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

Look in the left sidebar, directly underneath the big Wikipedia "Globe" image. Does anyone know if there is some kind of shortcut for checking one's own contributions? This isn't a very important feature for people logged into user accounts since there is a link generated on the upper right, but it would be useful for people editing via IP addresses without logging into an account. Much like we have something like Special:ListUsers/Bureaucrat or Special:Log/delete as more specific searches within the ListUsers/Log commands, I am wondering if there is some kind of way that Special:Contributions could be altered to create a universal link to an editor's own contributions, like basically automatically generating the forward slash and either UserName or IPaddress which would normally show up were an editor to view their contributions via a page history (or sometimes signature). A link like this would be useful to mention at the start of this help page, particularly for IP editors editing via shared computers, who do not have an automatically generated link and may not know their IP address, as many of them cycle and even for those with a dedicated static IP they are hard-to-remember numbers compared to textual names.

Alternatively if we cannot include that link to bring awareness, if we could automatically generate that link for un-logged-in users as we do for the logged-in ones, that would be a huge asset to people remembering what they edited before. The feature exists already, all this would do is increase access to it. 184.146.159.4 (talk) 17:31, 24 January 2014 (UTC)

Is there any reason the columns on the user contribution pages are not labeled?

Is there any reason the columns on rhe user contribution pages are not labeled atop the page?

Or in any case, why this article is not linked from each Contributions page?Daqu (talk) 17:56, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

Which columns do you mean? Special:Contribs does have a link to Help:User contributions. See the top right corner. --Glaisher [talk] 17:59, 5 June 2014 (UTC)
Do you mean you would like column headings like "Time", "Date", "Change", "Page name", "Edit summary" for contributions rows like these:
18:12, 5 June 2014 (diff | hist) . . (+114)‎ . . Long Island ‎ (Fixed the name of the county (Kings) occupied by the borough of Brooklyn) (current)
17:56, 5 June 2014 (diff | hist) . . (+331)‎ . . Help talk:User contributions ‎ (→‎Is there any reason the columns on the user contribution pages are not labeled?: new section)
They are lines and not organized in a table. The "columns" are simple but don't have fixed width and the lines can wrap so I don't think headings would be pretty or very useful.
If you don't have the "Help:User contributions" link at the top right of contributions pages then you probably changed language away from the default "en - English" at Special:Preferences. Users with the default see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Daqu?uselang=en. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:36, 5 June 2014 (UTC)

Additions and Brevity on Help Pages

Hello, Under the "privacy" section, I was wondering whether it would be worthwhile to expand the section to include that content on contribution pages can only be removed in certain circumstances. If I make a small addition, is that worthwhile, or is the extraneous for the purpose of the Help Project? Upjav (talk) 16:29, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

On the Help:User contributions page, the Total edit count section concludes with the recommendation:

For a summary of a user's activity on other language Wikipedias and other Wikimedia projects, type the following URL (replacing "XXX" by the name of the user):

Unfortunately, this currently produces an error page that starts with:

403: User account expired

and ends with:

As Toolserver will be shutdown and most tools are already migrated please give feedback if you miss a tool.

Does anyone know if there's an updated URL for this "Total edit count" tool, that could replace the obsolete URL in Help:User contributions?

Feature request: Filter by custom string in the edit summary

I would like to ask for this feature: filter the edits by custom strings. Sometimes I am placing certain texts in the "Edit summary" field, so I can find those edits later. For example in edits like this I place the string "overdue", to signal redirects that should have been created long ago. Or in edits like this I place the tag "TOFOLLOW", so I won't forget to check that discussion later. Maybe someone implemented this feature already on toolsever? —  Ark25  (talk) 08:58, 20 December 2014 (UTC)

@Ark25: Yes, this is already available. At the bottom of the contributions list is a link "Edit summary search". -- John of Reading (talk) 09:17, 20 December 2014 (UTC)

Languages Main article: Languages of Afghanistan Pashto and Dari (Persian) are the official languages of Afghanistan; bilingualism is very common.[1] Both are Indo-European languages from the Iranian languages sub-family. Dari has always been the prestige language and a lingua franca for inter-ethnic communication. It is the native tongue of the Tajiks, Hazaras, Aimaks, and Kizilbash.[157] Pashto is the native tongue of the Pashtuns, although many Pashtuns often use Dari and some non-Pashtuns are fluent in Pashto.

Other languages, including Uzbek, Arabic, Turkmen, Balochi, Pashayi, and Nuristani languages (Ashkunu, Kamkata-viri, Vasi-vari, Tregami, and Kalasha-ala), are the native tongues of minority groups across the country and have official status in the regions where they are widely spoken. Minor languages also include Pamiri (Shughni, Munji, Ishkashimi, and Wakhi), Brahui, Hindko, and Kyrgyz. A small percentage of Afghans are also fluent in Urdu, English, and other languages.

Language World Factbook / Library of Congress Country Studies estimate[34][158] Dari 50% Pashto 35% Uzbek and Turkmen 11% 30 minor languages 4% [1] on page "Afghanitan", under 4. Demographics, under 4.2, Languages, for Dari language the percentage entered shows 35% , where in fact according to CIA World Factbook and Library of Congress Country Studies the percentage for Dari language is %50. By visiting any of the links below, it'll take you to the CIA Factbook page, and library of Congress COuntry Studies. Both are reliable sources. Filter by string in page name

I was wondering if it was possible to search my contributions for specific pages or pages with specific strings in the title. I can't seem to find a way to do it. SPACKlick (talk) 17:02, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

@SPACKlick: Here's how you can do it for specific pages:
  1. Go to the specific page. (e.g. Roger Moore)
  2. Click on the View History tab.
  3. Click on the "Edits by User" link.
  4. Enter your username and click Submit.
Hope this helps! GoingBatty (talk) 20:10, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

Definition of "contributions"

We really need to inform editors that any change to any page (or adding a new page, or deleting an old one) is a contribution in Wikipedia's terms. A good dictionary will give you several different definitions of the word, so we need one here to nail down our own usage in case of a dispute, so I added a suggestion to our lead and pointed people here as part of a WP:BRD. Thanks for considering this. BeenAroundAWhile (talk) 04:14, 10 April 2015 (UTC)

Reassigning anonymous edits

I made some edits under the IP address : 124.198.202.95 at various times (I forgot to log in). Is there any way those edits could be redesignated as having been made by me? If so, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks! David Cannon (talk) 23:39, 25 May 2015 (UTC)

More info on the char count field

I've noticed that some of the green or red count of character changes are bold but most are not. What is the significance of that bolding?? WesT (talk) 17:56, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

@Westley Turner: Point 12 at Help:User contributions#Using ends with a link to Wikipedia:Added or removed characters, which explains that the bolding draws attention to size changes bigger than 500 characters. -- John of Reading (talk) 19:22, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

Edit request on the field "Subpages"

When a username is placed in this page, and you click "Subpages", it automatically inserts "/" after the username, this then searches for any subpage for User:username/ ( for example if I insert my name, it will search for subpages for KoshVorlon/ rather than KoshVorlon. Can that trailing "/" be removed, otherwise the subpage function won't work right. KoshVorlon We are all Kosh

For many users the slash is essential. For example, try listing the 17 subpages for John. If you remove the slash and refresh the list, you'll see several screens full of pages that have nothing to do with that user. In your case the only difference between the two listings is that your user page is omitted from the list with the slash; I think this is correct because your user page is not one of your subpages. -- John of Reading (talk) 17:22, 11 August 2015 (UTC)

Watching user contribs?

Is there any way to watch or track a user so I could be updated anytime that user makes an edit? There is no "watch" tab on user contrib pages. I posted this question on Help:watching pages and got no response. Fredwerner (talk) 07:15, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

No, I don't think there is a way of doing that (unless someone's written a special tool for doing so).--Kotniski (talk) 07:46, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
Would this help? It won't notify you but I think this is what you want. -WarthogDemon 22:30, 18 November 2009 (UTC)
The ability to "watch" a user's contributions page and receive change notices in the same way we do an article would be enormously helpful, especially to those of us who spend much of our time here combatting vandalism. While many vandals will target specific articles, many more do not, and will hop from article to article making a mess. Certainly, these kinds of vandalism are usually dealt with in short order, but it would go a lot faster and be a lot more consistent if we could watch their contribs. besiegedtalk 00:30, 17 September 2013 (UTC)
I support this request. There is a longstanding but dormant request at Bugzilla 470. It was also raised at VP in 2007 and 2013, the last of which said there was a workaround using RSS. I tried the Atom RSS feed button on the Contributions page in Safari and Chrome without success, but it seems to work in Firefox. – Fayenatic London 17:06, 24 September 2014 (UTC)
This feature would also be nice for keeping tabs on my student workers (i.e., not just for watching vandals). I'll try the RSS workaround. Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 17:21, 31 May 2016 (UTC)

A deleted user page hides edits?

So, if someone has their user page deleted but still has a talk page, thus leaving them with a red name but still allowing them to make named edits, does that make their contributions page inaccessible?--tronvillain (talk) 20:05, 14 July 2016 (UTC)

Apparently I was just not copying the username properly - the contributions page is clearly still accessible. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tronvillain (talkcontribs) 20:07, 14 July 2016 (UTC)

Wikipedia neutrality

Wikipedia neutrality is very sick: Category:Jewish_scientists exists since 2005, and the category Category:Muslim_scientists was deleted several times !!! WHY ?!!!Sbeitlian (talk) 23:39, 28 February 2016 (UTC)

@Sbeitlian: Looks like Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2007 January 12#Category:Scientists by religion has the answer: User:T. Anthony wrote "The Jewish one can be considered ethnicity or nationality". GoingBatty (talk) 03:43, 29 February 2016 (UTC)
"The Jewish one can be considered ethnicity or nationality"!!! Do you consider this a coherent answer? Do you know a nationality called Jewish? Or Jewish is an ethnicity and Muslim is not ? :) Sbeitlian (talk) 22:01, 29 February 2016 (UTC)
That quotation looks like a mistake. In Wikipedia categories, "Jewish" is considered an ethnicity or a religion. – Fayenatic London 09:59, 1 March 2016 (UTC)

This is just my two cents: A Jewish scientist who is non-observant is not an issue from either side. A scientist who is Muslim by birth may face "difficulties" if listed as such and then, for example, publicly drinks alcohol (prohibited). Perhaps a better example would be if TWO scientists, one Islamic, one Jewish, ate pork in a restaurant and happened to be photographed, whose life is more likely to be in danger? The religious of both groups see the camera above (a matter of religious teaching) to be the one that counts, but for those who wish to have more (peaceful) years here ... I know, I know, this doesn't even pass muster for a TALK page . . . signed --passing by. PLEASE: whoever deletes this, please rewrite it to Wiki standards - I don't wish to light a match to cause harm, just perhaps a candle. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.251.58.179 (talk) 00:04, 23 August 2016 (UTC)

Only show edits that are NOT latest revisions

I wish I could invert the selection implied in "Only show edits that are latest revisions", so that I could check what pages have changed since I last edited them. Is this possible? If not, is there a bugtracker where I could submit a wishlist ticket? Thanks. Fgnievinski (talk) 00:00, 10 May 2015 (UTC)

@Fgnievinski: The core software doesn't support this, but it is possible with an add-on script. See User:Markhurd/hidetopcontrib for instructions. -- John of Reading (talk) 06:28, 10 May 2015 (UTC)

In "Revision history", I think it would be useful to add a "report abuse" link next to "thank". --Gstree (talk) 21:08, 16 December 2016 (UTC)

@Gstree: You might be interested in the WP:TWINKLE tool which has relevant functionalities. These are displayed on diffs and not on revision history pages though. Also note that vandalism typically just gets undone and the editor warned − so typically nothing is "reported" in that sense with exceptions. Other than that also see: Wikipedia:Revision deletion. --Fixuture (talk) 23:20, 24 May 2017 (UTC)

What are deleted contributions?

What does "r" mean?

In Special:Contributions/AllaboutBahrain, the first edit is tagged with "rN". The "N" means "new", but I don't see anything that explains what "r" means. -- RoySmith (talk) 15:50, 21 November 2019 (UTC)

@RoySmith: If you use a desktop web browser, you can hover the mouse pointer over the underlined r and see a tool-tip saying 'This edit needs review.' If you look at Special:RecentChanges or your Special:Watchlist, you'll see a small frame above the main listing, with a title List of abbreviations or Legend, respectively. It contains a short description of those single-letter marks at some edits. The r mark is described as 'Edit flagged by ORES'. The acronym denotes objective revision evaluation services which is described at the linked page.

Is IPv6 supported in IP range search?

An IP range search can use a CIDR range such as 10.0.0.0/8 or a wildcard asterisk, such as 10.11.12.* or 192.168.*. does the user contribution special page support IP version 6 wildcards? Example from CIDR page: the IPv6 block 2001:db8::/48 represents the block of IPv6 addresses from 2001:db8:0:0:0:0:0:0 to 2001:db8:0:ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff. —andrybak (talk) 17:13, 23 August 2019 (UTC)
