Creation of this article

Without violating WP:BEANS, I suspect that there will likely be suggestions to delete this page as per the previous discussion. The page was, in my view, appropriately deleted due to speculative content and WP:CRYSTAL. However, given that new sources have now become available (specifically, the confirmation of Norwegian participation), I believe that it is now appropriate for this article to exist. Comments are, of course, welcomed. -ThatJosh (talk) 18:32, 31 January 2018 (UTC)

Can we please blacklist the IP vandalizing this page? They’re boasting on my Discord server about it and it’s really unfair on people who are actually trying to help. Serhatserhatserhat (talk) 08:11, 20 March 2018 (UTC)

Section about french RT boycott

Can someone please review the RT article that is used to say that "many French fans had expressed their hopes for a boycott of the event". This is totally inaccurate: RT cites some tweets by random users, not fans, and some of them are not even french. I'm pretty sure those can be found in every country/language. The french fan organisations are certainly not calling for a boycott, and contrary to the other countries listed, no political leader has suggested this. The whole "France" point should probably be removed. 92.88.248.161 (talk) 21:56, 14 May 2018 (UTC)

The i.p. is totally correct. Russia Today cites tweets from a few random Twitter users. That's pretty far from "many French fans had expressed their hopes for a boycott of the event." It's up to those adding such claims to provide sources to back them up, not up to the i.p. to prove a negative. Accordingly, I'm going to go ahead and remove that section. Invitation

I have read in several sources today that Kara wants to invite the Gulf states and basically all Arab states personally to participate in ESC 2019. I do not know if it is appropriate to add to the article. [3].--BabbaQ (talk) 23:13, 22 May 2018 (UTC)

I think that it should be included and is relevant to the page. I've added Tunisia for now, as it is specifically cited in Kara's tweet and also has membership. But ultimately I think that all of them should be posted on the page. 06:44, 26 May 2018 (UTC)
It has importance but as a summarized inclusive explanation along with showing Israel's openness or at least not trying to stand in the way for any country who wants to participate, as Kara also acts as a government representative. That also serves clarification from past cases of not accepting specific delegations/persons to certain country, for varied reasons. However, for now there aren't reports stating he/anyone from the government/from EBU - directly communicated and got responses from any of this other broadcasters, which also eventually never took part in the contest. BTW @KayeL:, all of the north African and south-western Asian countries are within the EBU signal reach with almost all of them having member broadcasters, and some intended to participate in the past, but also for this, there is still no need to dedicate a separate section repeating the same Kara announcement to each country. Its best to describe within the general prose about EBU's invitation to each member, joined with Kara's pointing out these countries together, as well his reference to non EBU members in the area. אומנות (talk) 12:42, 27 May 2018 (UTC)
On the same sense and as further clarification to my view, if any of the mid-eastern/Gulf countries makes his own direct response/general participation-intention, it thus gives specific info from its side, which reasons for the other countries which are listed separately under EBU members/non members. אומנות (talk) 13:10, 27 May 2018 (UTC)

Czech Republic & Croatia

I believe that the Czech and Croatian broadcasters announcing information regarding their national finals and what to do "next" is enough evidence of provisional interest. It is provisional, after all. An official statement is not necessarily required.

06:37, 26 May 2018 (UTC)

I'd suggest we wait for a bit more information about these two countries. It's very borderline with the sources we have so far. It's like considering Iceland to withdraw cause they have a provisional petition already, which also would not yet be a fully correct fact . Waiting doesn't hurt, but especially in the case of Croatia it'd be better and safer to get a bit more information until we call them a participant. So Hood 10:10, 26 May 2018 (UTC)

  • @So Hood: I don't think you understand what the provisional interest section is for. We do not need an official confirmation, but if a country has confirmed that they intend to compete then they are expressing their provisional interest. This is not the same as Iceland, as there is no such category as being "provisionally interested in withdrawal". There is no reason to wait for more sources – Croatia has expressed explicit interest in competing again and is brainstorming selection methods while the Czech Republic is already planning their national final – this is provisional interest. If you want the section to be turned into 100% cold hard confirmations, then that is something that should be discussed with WikiProject Eurovision, not here. { [ ( jjj 1238 ) ] } 20:09, 28 May 2018 (UTC)
I agree with @So Hood:. Looking at the source for the information I am not convinced. Bors has been "expressing interest" for years now. "I hope we can participate long term/next year" and "I'd like to make a national final on par with Melodifestivalen" has been his spiel for ages. His wish this year is hardly proof of even "provisional interest", let along participation. While it's more than likely that Czechia will participate again this year, Bors's hopes are definitely not something to base this article on. Very vague and very unreliable, it would be good to wait for some more news to at least "compare" this to before listing Czechia as officially participating (I don't necessarily mean it has to be a solid confirmation from ČT).

It's been several days since news broke that 4 Israeli cities will bid to host the contest, yet this page still doesn't reflect that. Mention of Tel Aviv's bid is nowhere to be seen. Inclusion of Catalonia

Please discuss the arguments for and against including Catalonia here, to avoid further edit warring. (((TPG))) (stalk) 14:07, 22 August 2018 (UTC)

  • Obviously I'm running on a translation from Catalan but there is nothing in the sole source that I can see to backup the phrase In the coming months, the TVC will apply for full membership of the EBU, and even if they were, there is nothing to justify including that phrase in this article (not every member enters). The crucial sentence is, as far as I can see, completely unsourced, and should be removed. Attribute [...] and any material whose verifiability is challenged or likely to be challenged to a reliable, published source using an inline citation The cited source must clearly support the material as presented in the article. OZOO (t) (c) 14:20, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
  • Support – In my opinion, by removing the section about Catalonia's attempt to enter the competition with a separate broadcaster, we remove information which would be useful to anyone reading this article. For example, when a reader reads in the JESC article that Wales participates with its own broadcaster, they might as well wonder why Catalonia doesn't participate in any Eurovision contest. And that section adresses exactly that. The "Other countries" section header also doesn't mean that every EBU member on not-member listed below is an independent state. Kosovo, for example, which is listed in this section is not an independent state. —Dimsar01 Talk ⌚→ 14:21, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
+1 (((TPG))) (stalk) 14:24, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
Surely the same question could be asked about why Scotland, the Faroe Islands or, given the presence of Australia, Botswana are absent? This is the 2019 article, not the Countries in the Eurovision Song Contest article. OZOO (t) (c) 14:25, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
I think the Catalonia info should be included in both articles. As to the other countries/territories - if you have any sources saying that they are attempting to join, feel free to add them. (((TPG))) (stalk) 14:30, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
I don't even have any sources saying that Catalonia is attempting to join. OZOO (t) (c) 14:33, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
The source in the article writes clearly that all these years, Catalonia wants to join. —Dimsar01 Talk ⌚→ 14:35, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
But, being an extract from an unpublished book and containing no quotes from anyone at Televisió de Catalunya, does not say they are actively attempting to enter. What is the quote (in Catalan or English) that backs up the contentious phrase "In the coming months, the TVC will apply for full membership of the EBU"? OZOO (t) (c) 14:40, 22 August 2018 (UTC)
I see no one has managed to find a source saying that TVC will apply for full membership in the coming months. Despite that, this lie remains in the article. OZOO (t) (c) 12:56, 23 August 2018 (UTC)
Firstly, let's go add a section about Catalonia in the mentioned article. And as User:That's Pretty Good said, let's leave this section here, like we do with Kosovo, Kazakhstan etc. even though nothing actually changes about these states each year; they're just attempting to enter the competition. —Dimsar01 Talk ⌚→ 14:35, 22 August 2018 (UTC)

Why British English, even though Israel uses American?

The 2019 Eurovision is tasking place in Israel, where American English is predominant over UK English. I don't think having the article being written in the spelling style that is not used where the contest itself is set is such a good idea. Glide08 (talk) 17:32, 26 September 2018 (UTC)

The artist of Finland will most likely be revealed BEFORE 2nd of March, like Saara Aalto in the end of 2017. I hope the Artist-section of Finland is removed. Thank you! From: ESC-fan from Finland. Eliasdert939 (talk) 11:06, 28 October 2018 (UTC)

Remove the TBD 2nd of March from the artist section of Finland. Don't put anything else there. Just remove it. The Finnish artist's date isn't on the Finnish Eurovision 2019 Wikipedia. Eliasdert939 (talk) 12:55, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

The Spanish song doesn't necessarily have to be in Spanish, therefore this page shouldn't confirm it already

In the official rules for submitting entries to OT 2018: Gala Eurovisión, the only thing explicitly stated about the language is the following: "The songs must contain lyrics in any of the official languages of Spain, instrumental songs not being eligible."

The official languages of Spain are Spanish, Galician, Basque and Catalan. Therefore, while it may seem likely, it is not completely confirmed that the Spanish entry will be in Spanish or that it will have any Spanish lyrics, and it should not be indicated that the entry will be in Spanish as it is not confirmed.

Kosovo

I believe the following is incorrect:

According to EBU guidelines, Kosovo's participation in 2018 would have been possible due to Portugal recognising Kosovo as a state.[1] Radio Television of Kosovo (RTK) decided not to participate, however still broadcast the contest in 2018.[2] Israel does not recognise Kosovo, but both states foster good relations.[3][unreliable source?]

RTK is neither a full member nor an associate member of the EBU, and that's the reason they cannot participate. The recognition of the host country is not necessary. In 2004, when the hosted was held in Istanbul, Cyprus did participate, even though Turkey does not recognise Cyprus. Dinsdagskind (talk) 14:04, 31 January 2019 (UTC)

North Macedonia

Should Macedonia be changed to North Macedonia since the Greek and the Macedonian parliaments accepted the aggreement? It is very likely that the country will compete under the name North Macedonia in Tel Aviv AdamantiosK (talk) 19:04, 25 January 2019 (UTC)

If it changes to North Macedonia before the contest (and the name is used at the contest), then yes. But for now, "very likely" isn't good enough, and as at fifteen minutes ago eurovision.tv were still saying FYR Macedonia. OZOO (t) (c) 19:14, 25 January 2019 (UTC)
Country names are those used here by Wikipedia, and not the EBU, a good example of this is ... well 'Macedonia', per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Macedonia) we use 'Macedonia', but not "Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia or any of its abbreviations will otherwise not be used." So yeah we just have to wait and see but "Macedonian officials told the BBC that it would only be used when Greece ratified the Nato accession deal, expected within a few weeks."[8] -- AxG /   23:22, 25 January 2019 (UTC)

The wikipedia page has been renamed to North Macedonia, and since the name has officially changed shouldn't it be changed here as well? AdamantiosK (talk) 12:39, 13 February 2019 (UTC)

Arabic in Italy's song

There's disagreement on the page about how the use of Arabic should be shown for Italy's language. "Soldi" contains a total of 10 words in Arabic (two nearly identical lines of five words each), meaning 97% of the song is in Italian. Past precedent supports that this should be included as a footnote, as was the case with Cyprus 2018 (which contained eight words in Spanish) and Denmark 2018 (which contained 20 words in Icelandic comprising four lines of the song). Hespen (talk) 02:10, 10 February 2019 (UTC)

100% agree. There is barely any Arabic in the song. It should just be a footnote. { [ ( jjj 1238 ) ] } 02:17, 10 February 2019 (UTC)
Okay, fair enough. I was under the impression that there was a verse in Arabic but after checking the lyrics, you're right. -ThatJosh (talk) 14:21, 10 February 2019 (UTC)

Ukraine entrant

UA:PBC have stated "The official announcement of a representative of Ukraine at the “Eurovision 2019” will be held on completion of the check of musicians for compliance and after the signing of the contract." so we should wait until they have officially confirmed that MARUV is (or is not) the Ukrainian representative. I would like to add the controversy over a TV series, that KAN, the broadcaster of Israel, had planned to air, called Duz Pua about a French Muslim who pretends to be LGBT, who is going to represent France at the Eurovision Song Contest in Israel, who happens to be involved in an terrorist plot with other radicalised muslims. Though it was pitched before the French selection, Bilal Hassan, an LGBT French Muslim, happen to be almost uncanny to the fictional character, sparking controversy in France, who allgedly demanded the TV series removed, or they would withdraw. It was later reported that France didn't threaten to withdraw. Theblueguy23 (talk) 22:09, 25 February 2019 (UTC)

Abkhaz in the Georgian song

The two words 'Varada' & 'sivarada' are two words common in Georgian folklores originally from the Abkhaz language, so perhaps that should be noted. --Ahmedo Semsurî (talk) 21:23, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

Found two english sources; [9][10] --Ahmedo Semsurî (talk) 21:25, 4 March 2019 (UTC)
Page 63 in the second source: "From Abx wara(y)da , s ә ywarayda ‘refrain in popular songs’. The samerefrain is known in Circ, Ub and Abaz, and from Kab it went to Osset(ESAY II: 92-93). The part s ә - in s ә ywarayda means ‘my’ in all WestCaucasian languages, though the form s ә -y- (with the marker y- of the alienable possession) is purely Ad, which gives reason to regardthe Abx word as borrowed from Ad (pointed out by G. Klimov). Apartfrom Megr, the refrain is known also in West-Geo dialects, and evenin some eastern Geo dialects too, cf. Mox varada-varada (Ghlont’i:223). Cf. also the first part of Megr vara-nani ‘refrain in songs’" --Ahmedo Semsurî (talk) 21:38, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

Northern Sami in Norway's song.

In my view, this should be listed in the column in its own right, not as a footnote. If it were just two lines or something, I could understand, however there is a significant enough portion of the song in Sami to have it noted. This is fair, imo. -ThatJosh (talk) 22:56, 2 March 2019 (UTC)

The Northern Sami doesn't fill an entire verse or chorus, so per the standard it should be in the footnote, regardless of how often it's repeated. LexPro4 (talk) 23:01, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
Where has this standard been established? The line(s) are repeated enough that it could theoretically create a chorus or two if they were together, so I would argue this policy is not rational and should be changed - if it is the case that exists (i haven't seen it personally) -ThatJosh (talk) 23:08, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
Past precedent, such as in Higher Ground. There are four lines in Icelandic, which could be a chorus if put together but they do not fill an entire chorus on their own. LexPro4 (talk) 23:17, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
Just to clear out; Only one line is in Northern Sami (Čajet dan čuovgga), the line (He-lo e loi-la) is just gibberish aka written joik sounds. Volum-ion (talk) 23:18, 2 March 2019 (UTC)

I agree with the first user here, although technically only one line of the lyrics is in Sami, the use of joik throughout the song (and joik fills an entire verse) is significant and joik would usually be thought of as Sami too. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Radcliffemla (talkcontribs) 20:54, 6 March 2019 (UTC)
