Aniyan Midhun (born 18 June 1992), also known as “Son of Arabian Sea”.[1] is an Indian Wushu Player and martial artist. He is known for being the first South Indian in International Wushu competitions.[2] In 2021, he won gold at South Asian Wushu Championship held in Nepal.[3] In 2022, he won gold at the World Pro Wushu Sanda fight held in Thailand.[4] Midhun was also a contestant on the reality show Bigg Boss (Malayalam TV series) season 5 aired on the Asianet (TV channel) in 2023.

Midhun was born on June 18, 1992, in a place called Thrissur, Kerala which is one of the oldest cities on the west coast of India. He comes from a hindu family. He initially attended Bharath Vidya Mandir School, Valapad, Kerala. For intermediate, he went to V.P.M. Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Higher Secondary School, Kazhimbram, Kerala. His father, Mohan worked as a Fisherman, and his mother, Ponnamma was a housewife.[5] Midhun spent the majority of his time on the Nattika beach in his childhood.[3] He became fond of the sea and was being nicknamed “Son of Arabian Sea”.[1]

Midhun was taught just the basics of karate for sports period in his school. At that time, he was in standard 5th when he joined Karate classes in his hometown.[6] Later, he got black belt in karate.[7] He practiced his skills further by training in Wushu when he was in standard 7th. His training used to cost a lot. So, to continue those training classes, he used to do fishing, farming, and selling bananas with his family.[5] He used to do college and training after helping his family.

To pursue a bachelor's in 2010, he joined Annamalai University in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, India.[8] Although he didn’t complete his degree during his graduation years, he realised his interests for Wushu, so he moved to Jammu and Kashmir for professional training. Under the guidance of an Dronacharya Award Winner, Kuldeep Kumar Handoo, he used to practice on the mountains.[9] In 2015, he became the national champion in Kickboxing, held by Indian Association of kickboxing.[10]

Career

Midhun’s professional journey in Wushu began earlier in 2017 when he joined the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council. On March 31, 2021, Aniyan Midhun made his international debut at the South Asian Wushu Championship held in Nepal.[11] Midhun competed under the 70kg category as well as went on to win the Gold medal for India. Also, his childhood name was Midhun Mohan, which he later changed to Aniyan Midhun as his career began in Wushu journey.[12]

IN 2022, Midhun established his Wushu career when he secured a gold medal at the World Pro Wushu Sanda Fight held in Thailand.[13][4][14]

Midhun made his television debut on March 26, 2023, when his name extended beyond the sports arena.[15][16] He signed as a contestant on the reality show Bigg Boss (Malayalam TV series) season 5, aired on Asianet (TV channel).[1][17]

Midhun is also a fitness trainer and used to referee state level wushu competition.[8]

Bigg Boss Controversy

During his appearance on Bigg Boss, Aniyan Midhun shared a fabricated love story about a relationship with a woman named Sana, a lady commando in the Indian Army, who he claimed had been killed in action.[18] The story sparked controversy, with many accusing him of disrespecting the Indian Army. The incident caused major backlash, questioned other aspects of his career too.[19][20]

In response to the controversy, Midhun issued a public apology, admitting that the story had been crafted to contribute to the show's TRP (Television Rating Points).[21] He clarified that his intent was not to disrespect the Indian Army, acknowledging the seriousness of the mistake and expressing regret for any offense caused.[22][23][24]

In 2021, Midhun was appointed as the brand ambassador for Garmin India for an year.[25] He also represented the brand Absolute Nutrition that year[26]

Records

In 2021, he became the world record holder for being the first South Indian to represent India in International Wushu.[6]

In 2022, Midhun brought gold medal for India and became World Champion in World Pro Wushu Sanda Fight held in Thailand.[4]
