Creating infoboxes

edit

Hi there. There is a template for creating infoboxes about ethnic groups, {{Infobox ethnic group}}. Infoboxes shouldn't be created as images, as you've been trying to do. Cordless Larry (talk) 22:19, 26 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Welcome to Wikipedia. We appreciate your contributions, but in one of your recent edits to British diaspora, it appears that you have added original research, which is against Wikipedia's policies. Original research refers to material—such as facts, allegations, ideas, and personal experiences—for which no reliable, published sources exist; it also encompasses combining published sources in a way to imply something that none of them explicitly say. Please be prepared to cite a reliable source for all of your contributions. You can have a look at the tutorial on citing sources. Thank you. Cordless Larry (talk) 10:22, 27 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Cordless Larry (talk). There is no original research, the reference material was shown on the page, and any needed clarification was provided in comments and in the edit summary. Those who identify as "American" are predominantly of British background, and this statement was referenced. Also, the FactFinder page was not loading properly, so a PDF of the page was used instead.111818b (talk) 10:50, 27 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

I've explained the issue at Talk:British diaspora#Population figures. Cordless Larry (talk) 11:32, 27 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Please do not add or change content, as you did at White Hispanic and Latino Americans, without citing a reliable source. Please review the guidelines at Wikipedia:Citing sources and take this opportunity to add references to the article. Thank you. Cordless Larry (talk) 06:58, 6 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Image without license

edit

Thanks for uploading File:Camille Schrier - Miss America 2020.png. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. Even if you created the image yourself, you still need to release it so Wikipedia can use it. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time after the next seven days. If you made this image yourself, you can use copyright tags like {{PD-self}} (to release all rights), {{self|cc-by-sa-4.0}} (to require that you be credited), or any tag here - just go to the image, click edit, and add one of those. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by MifterBot. For assistance on the image use policy, see Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. NOTE: Once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. --MifterBot (TalkContribsOwner) 04:01, 21 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Camille Schrier - Miss America 2020.png

edit

A tag has been placed on File:Camille Schrier - Miss America 2020.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F9 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the file appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the image belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use it — which means allowing other people to use it for any reason — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. The same holds if you are not the owner but have their permission. If you are not the owner and do not have permission, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission for how you may obtain it. You might want to look at Wikipedia's copyright policy for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. --Cameron11598 (Talk) 05:27, 21 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

The image is a clear copyright violation. Don't remove the tag again unless you prove otherwise. Thanks --Cameron11598 (Talk) 06:03, 21 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
Just a quick fyi since you are now claiming fair use, you can't claim fair use on an image of a living person as there is always the ability for an image to be taken of the individual. Regards, --Cameron11598 (Talk) 06:06, 21 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

You have been blocked from editing for a period of 24 hours for violating copyright policy by copying text or images into Wikipedia from another source without evidence of permission. Please take this opportunity to ensure that you understand our copyright policy and our policies regarding how to use non-free content. Once the block has expired, you are welcome to make useful contributions.
If you think there are good reasons for being unblocked, please read the guide to appealing blocks, then add the following text below the block notice on your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.  ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 07:15, 21 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy).

Request reason:

When I re-uploaded the image, I clearly stated that I did not know what the acceptable license should have been, marked the image as "Don't know", and provided a link to the source - as instructed - to receive assistance from an editor. Neither you nor User:Cameron11598 has provided said assistance, or any other useful information, you've only continued to harass me. 111818b (talk) 08:17, 21 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Decline reason:

(1) It's clear that you don't understand image copyright, and there is no evidence that you will have done so when this block expires. I cannot let you edit until you understand this policy, therefore I have extended your block to indefinite. (2) Whinging about harassment in response to legitimate concerns about your edits is not going to get you any sympathy at all. MER-C 08:40, 21 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Harass? I've explained above why the image didn't qualify as fair use. The fact someone has a copyright on the image means it isn't public domain. Please retract your personal attack claiming I harassed you. --Cameron11598 (Talk) 08:19, 21 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
Additionally the template I posted states

"For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images taken from other web sites or printed material."--Cameron11598 (Talk) 08:33, 21 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

  • @111818b: You shouldn't consider this block to be punitive in nature, nor Cameron's warnings harassment. Blocks are sometimes the only way to get really important messages across to our fellow editors on this site, especially when they apparently refuse to abide by multiple warnings. Basically, as Cameron, Oshwah, MER-C and others have said to you: your uploads were copyright infringement, as they are owned by someone else other than yourself and they have not been licensed to be used freely. You should use the time of this block to read over the relevant policies regarding copyright that have been linked several times to you in messages above, and perhaps familiarize yourself with how licensing works (it can be a bit complicated, so I will happily answer any questions you have regarding this: use {{ping}} to notify me if you do). The quicker and more thoroughly you do this, the sooner your block can be lifted. I see you have made several worthy contributions to our site separate from your attempted uploads, so I hope you do not take this block personally... nor let it discourage you from continuing to volunteer here. Just take the message as it is intended: we take copyright violations very seriously. Coffee // have a ☕️ // beans // 11:18, 21 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Request reason:

I have read and understood Wikipedia's image use policy. I recognize that the image should not be uploaded under a Creative Commons or Fair Use license, assume good faith on the part of the admins, and would like to request assistance from @Coffee: in identifying the correct way to add an image to the pages under consideration. This or further images will not continue to be incorrectly uploaded, and will instead be uploaded in manners that comply with established protocol and contribute productively to the Wikipedia community. 111818b (talk) 18:13, 21 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Decline reason:

Since you said you understand the image use policy, let me present you with this test. You want to upload these four images, according to their licenses, what do you do in each case:
  1. Portrait of a European
  2. A corridor in Lisbon
  3. A building in Budapest
  4. European Starling
Please use the ping template again when you answer this. Coffee // have a ☕️ // beans // 10:18, 23 December 2019 (UTC)Reply
