AIV console

I tried blocking a test account. It threw an error. It is not correctly contacting the API to return a block token. Also, you should set it to autoblock and block account creation by default. If you can, providing a way to quickly browse the user's contribs like Huggle has would be much better than having to click on them with using the

dim instance as webbrowser

way that you apparently used. J.delanoygabsadds 17:54, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

Oh, the contribs I'm already planning on doing. I know it's a hassle right now. And, I might have left it as testwiki when I built, lemme check...yep, I did. Stupid me. Hold on one second. DavidWS (contribs) 18:12, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
Uploaded the fixed version. DavidWS (contribs) 18:15, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
OK, I'll try it out. BTW, I'm watching this page, so you don't have to give me the talkback thingys if you don't want to. J.delanoygabsadds 18:18, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
Oh, okay. I didn't know if you were. Yeah, that was stupid, I thought I changed the constant back (testwiki is where I test it, obviously). DavidWS (contribs) 18:19, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
  • OK it's finally working (somewhat, its giving me some 21 error or something). Right off the bat , the ability to see the actual AIV reports (commentary is sometimes necessary to see what they consider to be vandalistic about the edits) and also the ability to edit that page to reply. Then also drop down options for the most used blocking options are needed as well. A drop down box or radio button for commonly used block times would be nice as well. Good start though. –xeno (talk) 18:23, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
...and we have a problem. I did not tell it to do this. J.delanoygabsadds 18:24, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
Which one of those? The no talk page one? Maybe that flag doesn't work even though it was listed in the auto-generated doc. Testwiki doesn't have that flag, so I couldn't test it. I'll look at my code. DavidWS (contribs) 18:26, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
I should have been more specific, sorry. The first one was with the program. I then unblocked and reblocked using MediaWiki's block feature. While I'm at it, what do you think about running for RFA? Do you think you could pass? J.delanoygabsadds 18:28, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, I think that was a problem with my code...the flag should work, but it could be an API problem in which case I'll probably have this actually post to the block form. As for RFA: Wow...you're the third person who has indirectly or directly mentioned that. I definitely want to run for adminship, and I do think at some point I could pass, but I'm not sure if that time is now. I don't think I would get snowed on, but I think my lack of a lot of content contributions would detract from the support votes. On the other hand, technically, RFA is just supposed to be a matter of community trust of the responsibility with the tools, and having the tools would benefit me immensely. It's been about five 1/2 months since I've joined, but I only really started seriously contributing in the past month (although I had knowledge of a lot of policy much before then). If I were to become an admin, the major area I would work in would be vandal blocking, fighting, CSD (although there would be more than just that). What do you think? Cheers, DavidWS (contribs) 18:35, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
@Xeno, I can have it show the reporter's comments. I could just parse everything between
<li><span
and
</li>
, run a regex to strip all the HTML tags and everything within them, and be left with the report. I'll work on that a little later. I'm also going to work on the "huggle-style" diff (I'll take a look at the Huggle codebase and see how they do it. I know you can grab a users contribs from the API, but I'm not sure about diffs.). The other thing on my list is implementing ZLIB in my HTTP class to save the wiki's bandwidth. That'll only take about ten minutes, though. Basically just need to add Accept-encoding: gzip and then have it run it through the uncompress function in zlib.dll. Cheers, DavidWS (contribs) 18:45, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

RFA

Well, I don't know. I've asked a few people these questions, don't spend too much time on them if you don't want to. J.delanoygabsadds 18:48, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

  1. Have you ever been blocked?
    Never.
    1. If so, when?
      N/A
    2. For what?
      N/A
  2. Ever had an Editor Review?
    No
  3. An RfA?
    No
  4. What (if any) horrible skeletons lie in your editing closet?
In fourth or third grade I vandalized, then stopped shortly thereafter.
  5. Got much recent experience at AfD?
Yes, a good amount. I also have WP:N experience, and more specific notability related policies. (EG: WP:BAND)
  6. Are there any major mainspace contribs or other subsantial edits that you are particularly proud of?
Well, most of my work is in vandal fighting, so a lot of my edits are Huggle machine-like edits. However, I have written two articles, Rock Pedal and Net Nanny. The next software or computer related article that I have at least a slight clue about listed at WP:Requested articles, I will make. However, I still like maintaining the wiki over writing content. (This is not to say that I dislike content editing).
  7. Is there anyone else who has expressed interest in nomming you for adminship?
xeno hinted at it, and Dweller said he is "looking forward to seeing me with a mop" some time soon.
  8. Is there anyone specific (other than me :-) ) you would have particularly liked to nominate you? (If yes, I can ask them if they would like to co-nom.)
xeno, if he would be willing/would want to co-nom.
^ on this, I'd be happy to. –xeno (talk) 20:42, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
Sorry for not following up. I've got to get some homework done, so I don't know when I'll be able to look at your contribs more closely. Good job with the AIV console BTW. That tool will likely become a very nice addition to our (Wikipedia's) repertoire. 23:24, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
Oh, it's no problem. Thank you for the complement. I've been hard at work tonight on implementing the suggestions I've gotten. I have previous blocks down, showing the report down, general improvements (speed and bandwidth used) down, and I've got a list showing the last 50 contribs down, now I'm just working on doing the diff as close to huggle style as I can get it. I'll probably ask Gurch how he does it or take a look at the code later, but I know I'll get it done. Cheers, DavidWS (contribs) 00:12, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

I just wanted to let you know - I'm not implying that you do this, but before you do... drive-by comments at AFD won't help you much. Try limiting yourself to like, two a day, like I do, and get in depth with them. —Ceran (talk) 02:15, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

AIV console enchancment

Is it possible to show the previous block for the user / ip (show the block log). Also maybe has links to go to Whois info and talkpage? ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 19:51, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

Yes, it's possible to do every suggestion on this page. I'm doing some homework right now but I'll work on it all later. My first priority is showing more info about the user. Cheers, DavidWS (contribs) 20:05, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
Thanks :P Have fun with the api! :P ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 20:21, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
No problem, I appreciate suggestions. The Mediawiki API is really nice, as I'm sure you know. I love it. (I currently have the best XML parsing in the world in my program...I use the magic of just getting strings between <block and /> and such. :D I'm going to use MSXML or maybe a pure code parser, because I don't want much overhead. DavidWS (contribs) 20:34, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
The api is ok when it works :) And when it has what I need in it :P. When im sure it should work and it doesn't... now that starts to get to me. Anyway good luck with your AIV program, and please message me on new releases! ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 21:19, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
Well, the same hold true for any API. I'll message you on new releases, sure. MSXML really seems to suck...then again, it's the best option (I hate this...). However, I could actually get by with just parsing out what I need, because it's not like it's a 10 megabyte XML file. DavidWS (contribs) 21:31, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
Okay, well, I wrote some code that grabs all previous blocks. (Using MSXML) I haven't released it yet, though. I'm going to get more user info first. DavidWS (contribs) 21:55, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

You need to add an option to only block anonymous users when blocking IP addresses. Currently, you leave me no choice but to hardblock them. (</complain> :P ) J.delanoygabsadds 02:45, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

Wow, how did I forget about that. *facepalm*. Yeah, I'll add it in a few minutes. DavidWS (contribs) 02:47, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
Also, can you make it so that when you click on the diff of the edit, it loads the diff? (You ought to create a subpage so that you don't mix up AIV console stuff with other conversations) J.delanoygabsadds 02:50, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
Meh, I wish you'd requested that at the same time. About the first request (anon only):   Done. I have a subpage and a talk page for that subpage, actually: User:DavidWS/AIV Console. Okay, well I'll do that, but it may error out if you go to click happy. Just as a warning. DavidWS (contribs) 02:53, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
Second request:   Done check the googlecode page DavidWS (contribs) 02:55, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
One last thing: Have you considered downloading the express edition of MS Visual Basic 2008? It's free, and Gurch wrote Huggle with it. And if you did that, I'm pretty sure that I would be able to open the source code files and while I don't know a lot about Visual Basic, I do know some, and if I could try stuff out myself to see if it works, and then just send you the entire project file, it would be a lot easier. J.delanoygabsadds 03:00, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
Also with me. Use express 2008 and I might just be able to help as well :). Note: Gurch originally used VB6 me thinks :P ·Add§hore· Talk/Cont 07:57, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
Ok, well, I could, but then I would need to change a lot of code (different languages). Also, through ACM's student program, I get every MS product for free, so I have the pro version of 2008 (just runs slow, one of the reasons I decided to use this). If you guys really want me to port the code, I will. However, I could also (legally) get you VB6, if you'd like. DavidWS (contribs) 13:10, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
Hey, I looked at your code in a text editor, and apparently it has been a lot longer than I thought it had been since I used Visual Basic. I don't if I'll be able to remember enough to actually do anything with it or not. And on top of that, I'm taking a second level course in C#, an intro course in C++, and a kinda halfway-between-intro-and-second-level course in assembly language, so they're all getting jumbled up with the VB commands (especially the C#). I tend to do pretty poorly when I try to edit my programs in those languages without seeing them correctly formatted and color-coded, so I don't know how if I'll do better with your VB once I actually open your program in an IDE, instead of Notepad. I'm sorry I put you through all the trouble of migrating it when there is only about a 60% chance that I will actually be able to do anything with it. :/ J.delanoygabsadds 18:33, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
No, don't apologize. I should've started it in 2008 in the first place. Plus Addshore can work on it this way. DavidWS (contribs) 18:49, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Arnolds

Heya...I'd appreciate if you'd taken another look at the Arnolds page and the assertions of notability, especially the references given. I believe that it really does fail notability guidelines per WP:CORP. Thanks, Kickstart70TC 18:22, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

I took a look and see whatcha mean. DavidWS (contribs) 18:25, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. I've recently been seeing editors overwhelmed by the volume of Afds (I'm only adding to that problem) and some false assertions of notability are slipping through the cracks. No idea how to solve that sticky problem. --Kickstart70TC 18:31, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

The Three Doctors

Hi, DavidWS. I see that you moved the page about the Doctor Who serial The Three Doctors from The Three Doctors to The Three Doctors (Doctor Who), and changed The Three Doctors to a redirect to The Three Doctors (disambiguation). I know that your intentions were good, but there are a few small problems with the way you went about it. First of all, it might have been better to discuss the move at Talk:The Three Doctors before performing it, to be sure that there was a consensus for it. I don't have a problem with the decision to move the Doctor Who page, but others might. You don't always need to go through the whole bureaucratic rigamarole of WP:RM, but a heads-up is always a good idea.

Second, when you moved the page and changed the target of The Three Doctors, you broke a lot of links. See [1] — there were about 200 pages that linked to The Three Doctors, and now all those links will go to the disambiguation page you created. It's good form, when performing a move like this, to fix relevant links so that readers who follow them don't have to go to a disambiguation page to find what they're looking for. I can help with this, since there are a lot of links, but it would be good for you to fix some too.

Finally, and least important, I don't think that the disambiguation page needs to be titled The Three Doctors (disambiguation). WP:DABNAME says that when there is no primary topic, the disambiguation page can be at the ambiguous term itself: in this case, that would be The Three Doctors, so I'll move the disambiguation page there.

Please don't take this as a rebuke or scold — these are just minor points that come up when a page gets moved. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me on my talk page. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 01:37, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

Oh, sorry about this. Really. I'll fix a lot of the links. I'll use AWB, you don't need to do it, I will. It's my fault. DavidWS (contribs) 01:39, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll come back later and clean up whatever you don't get around to. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 01:41, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
Oh, there were also a couple of fair-use images on the Doctor Who page, whose rationales were pointing to the wrong place. I've fixed them, but that's another thing that it's good to check and fix after a move. (If the rationale points to the wrong article, there are bots that will mark the image for deletion.) —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 01:47, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
All the broken links fixed. DavidWS (contribs) 02:19, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

Technological Supremacy

I can see why you have recommended my article for deletion. I have recently edited my page and am asking for another review. This is my first article that hasn't been deleted within the first ten minutes or so and I would hate to see it deleted, considering how much pride I take in the fact that it has at least lasted a week. It would be much appreciated if you could review it once more and suggest any other additions or changes that would help support the supplied data and help the page improve substantially. Thank you for taking the time to consider my suggestion.Fishman343 (talk) 23:21, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Sorry, but that article does not cite reliable sources, is an essay, is soapboxing, and you are owning the article. Two others have !voted delete on the article, and it will likely be deleted. Sorry if this comes across as harsh, but this does not deserve a spot in an encyclopedia, at least as it is currently written and sourced. DavidWS (contribs) 23:24, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

I can see how http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1P1-42679052.html was decently unreliable and how my other sources offer very little information, but I urge that the page not be deleted because, if not a large concern at this moment in time, it will be in the future. So if the article must be deleted, I press that it be kept on file, so that it may be resurected when necessary. I have read that certain administrators hold the power to do such a thung as "undelete" a page. If for some reason, the file is somehow lost, I have a saved copy of the text on my computer inside a word document. Altough this page might be soapboxing, I think it could be merged into the disscusion of some other page concerning the future and technology. Thank you for your assistance. Please contact the other critics under the talk page ofTechnological Supremacy. I think they might have some advanced questions that I am not able to answer. Thank you for your time. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fishman343 (talkcontribs) 23:43, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

The idea here is, and you just admitted it, is that the page fails notability guidelines, you are soapboxing, and that you are just putting your opinion into the article. This is why the article is likely going to be deleted. If you'd like, forty-five years from now when this might - possibly - maybe an issue, you can create the article. Right now, there is absolutely nothing reliable on the topic, and the page is an essay/opinion. DavidWS (contribs) 23:46, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
Actually, those sources don't even mention it. In the second one, it's talking about a different type of technological supremacy. I have put a hoax template on the article. DavidWS (contribs) 23:48, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

If my article must be deleted, I guess it is inevitable. I do highly suggest, though, considering the merge allerts at the top of Technological Supremacy. I think that it would acctually fit in quite well under the Technology Tree Page. Please reply back to me on your decision, I'd like to know the likely future of article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fishman343 (talkcontribs) 02:35, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

Well, If you'd like...

I just now realized what I should have done before I created Technological Supremacy. I probably should have created the subpage first and edited it there. So, I coppied what is left of the active page and put it into the subpage. I could use some serious help and am in store for a massive learning experience. I was wondering if, in your spare time, you could help me work on /Technological Supremacy so that it has a better chance of surviving in the active page. Please reply with your answer, I'd like to know what I should do to make the article good enough to not get deleted.Fishman343 (talk) 02:54, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

I am kind of leaning towards its inclusion. TED is a pretty sensible site. Check out the Wikipedia / Jimmy Wales talks on it.

The link seems to be as valid and scientific as the other external links. It might be worth reconsidering. Cheers.

Kthx. If you don't mind, you plz to tell me exactly what it should do. Kthx. DavidWS (contribs) 15:29, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
It wouldn't need to be very complex:
  • scan Special:NewPages for the oldest non-patrolled edit
  • Do a little math: 720 hours minus (today's date minus date of oldest non-patrolled edit)
  • Paste that result into the template
  • Scan every three hours and update as necessary

Well, I am not a sysop, so I cannot block that user. Also, the final warning is stale, so the warning you gave the user (I haven't checked) should be an initial one. DavidWS (contribs) 00:47, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Sure. Add "importScript('User:DavidWS/afdvote2.js');" to your monobook (no quotes), hard refresh. On every AFD entry, there will be a "!vote" button at the top. Click on it, enter details into the form, submit. It'll do all the annoying work for you :) DavidWS (contribs) 19:57, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

If I can offer some advice, it's probably best just to leave the IP 75.91.169.43 alone. He's not here to contribute or do anything other than drag us all into long-winded useless conversations. If we all just ignore him, chances are he'll either go away or carry over his nonproductive edits into the mainspace, where he'll be blocked again. Either way, he won't waste our time any more. Hi Question

I don't understand why you redirected retailmenot to bugmenot. Can you let me know why? I was trying to find out about a company who donates to Wikipedia Foundation (per the 2008 annual report) and although I looked up the web page of the coupon company, I could not find an "about" page. Thought I would look up the company on Wikipedia. Bugmenot is not retailmenot. Could you look at this change so that a new page can be created? Thanks! al95521 (talk) 19:28, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

As Halloween is my favorite holiday, I just wanted to wish those Wikipedians who have been nice enough to give me a barnstar or smile at me, supportive enough to agree with me, etc., a Happy Halloween! Sincerely, --A NobodyMy talk 18:07, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

commonsmover.js

Hi! For some reason your commonsmover.js didn't work for me, so I copied it and cleaned it up a bit at User:Where next Columbus?/commonsmover.js. It now shows up in the toolbox under Vector. W n C? 11:41, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Greetings Recent Changes Patrollers!

This is a one-time-only message to inform you about technical proposals related to Recent Changes Patrol in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:

  1. Adjust number of entries and days at Last unpatrolled
  2. Editor-focused central editing dashboard
  3. "Hide trusted users" checkbox option on watchlists and related/recent changes (RC) pages
  4. Real-Time Recent Changes App for Android
  5. Shortcut for patrollers to last changes list

Further, there are more than 20 proposals related to Watchlists in general that you may be interested in reviewing. (and over 260 proposals in all, across many aspects of wikis)

Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.

Note: You received this message because you have transcluded {{User wikipedia/RC Patrol}} (user box) on your user page. Since this message is "one-time-only" there is no opt out for future mailings.
