Hello!

Would you consider maybe protecting their talk page while their 1 year block is in effect? They're already using it in a somewhat unorthodox way.

Thanks. SWik78 (talkcontribs) 18:01, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

It's standard procedure to not protect talk pages so they can request an unblock if they wish and provide sufficient reason to do so. Talk pages of bocked users (or IPs) are only protected when there is excessive trolling/vandalism/unblock template abuse and I don't see that happening there yet. BTW, the proper place to request a page protection is at RFPP. Thanks for your input. -- Alexf42 20:52, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

Nina Hunt

Hello, thanks for the help with the article I created about my grandmother, Nina Hunt. I have left a message on the article's talk page for you giving some sourcing. I understand that the article may not meet guidlines so thank you for telling me some specifics of where it was let down. 80.225.110.64 (talk) 18:11, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Regarding Nina Hunt Firstly, I think anyone offered to choreograph two Olypic Gold Medalists for the Olympics must fall into the category "noteable".In terms of published sources, I am pretty sure that Bill and Bobbie (Irvine), in their 1970 autobiography "The Dancing years" discussed Nina's role in their careers. Though it is not in print yet, we were recently asked by someone in Canada writng a book about dancing to send some photographs of Nina and Dimitri for the book. Hope this is helpful and sorry to have created an article that has caused so much dispute. It is just something that I have always felt something that I have always felt strongly about (them each having a wikipedia article) as many of their pupils appear on wikipedia, many having gone on to much greater things (Len is now a T.V. personality for example and Bill and Bobbie's MBE's - the first ever awarded for dancing at the time they were awarded them in 1967 as far as I am aware, this could be added to their article -being yet more proof of this). As in most sports, the coaches have the least to gain and they were never recognised beyond several awards for their contribution to Latin. As further evidence, I knew relatively little about them apart from a picture of them dancing with the band of Victor Silvester OBE hung above our piano. I discovered an article telling a biography of Dimitri from a newspaper cutout from before his death which sparked my interest. I spoke with my Dad and, at the party of one of Nina's pupils spoke to Bobbie and some other friends of Nina's though I had never heard of many of them! Watching Strictly Come Dancing, I discovered that Nina had taught Len Goodman at one point and doing some searching on the interenet found references to both Nina and Dimitri on Walter and Miriam Kaiser's tribute site and one site listing winners of a particular dance award (it may have been the Carl-Alan) over the years with Nina on. I found a particularly old copy of Dimitri's book and my Mother's wedding shoes which had been made by "Petrides". One other pair of "pupils" who I have not mentioned and you will find on google are Sammy Stopford and barbara McColl and whose party it was I met the popel at. Hope this all helps and sorry again . All I can do is ask you to not delete the article. Thanks. 80.225.110.64 (talk) 18:06, 2 May 2008 (UTC) Dleep (talk) 20:06, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

You seem to have this wrong. It is not me you have to convince or ask not to delete the article. It is the AfD process you have work with. Any other admin will delete it if it is not notable. As an admin I only follow the rules. -- Alexf42 00:26, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Go to google and type in "Carl-Alan award winners" and one hit will come up from idta listing all winners 1953-2004 on abode reader. If you scroll down, you will find awards being presneted by one of Nina's pupils, Len Goodman, and if you scroll down to 1968, you will find "Nina Hunt" written second on the list followed by Bill and Bobbie Irvine MBE, two of her pupils. I am holding the award right now and it says on the front "Carl-Alan Teachers Award 1968 Nina Hunt" and on the book give a long explanation of its History which, to prove that I have the trophy says "Carl-Alan 1968 Awarded Annually for outstanding contributions to Members of the Ballroom Dancing Industry First presented in 1953 and named after Carl L. Heimann and Alan B. Fairley"Dleep (talk) 07:56, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

New Project

Myself and several other editors have been compiling a list of very active editors who would likely be available to help new editors in the event they have questions or concerns. As the list grew and the table became more detailed, it was determined that the best way to complete the table was to ask each potential candidate to fill in their own information, if they so desire. This list is sorted geographically in order to provide a better estimate as to whether the listed editor is likely to be active.

If you consider yourself a very active Wikipedian who is willing to help newcomers, please either complete your information in the table or add your entry. If you do not want to be on the list, either remove your name or just disregard this message and your entry will be removed within 48 hours. The table can be found at User:Useight/Highly Active, as it has yet to have been moved into the Wikipedia namespace. Thank you for your help. Useight (talk) 17:04, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

hi my name is saxman101 and recently you deleted a page that i created because of a lack of noteabality this kind of gets under my skin because the band i am writing about just formed and there have been some problems please contact me @ freshmanmusican@gmail.com quickly so that we can talk this over. ps i cant sign my documents because i dont have a tildes key LOL. pps i am sorry about pasting this in the wrong place i hope i dident mess any thing up did i do it right this time?

Excuse me? If the band does not show notability under WP:BAND then there is nothing I can do. It does not matter if it gets "under your skin" as you said. You must follow policy. The burden of proof is in your side under WP:PROVEIT. -- Alexf42 19:16, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Percy Jackson

Hi my name is 60'smusic and I was hoping you could repull up the information on the Percy Jackson page that you deleted. I would also like to know why you deleted it... if that isn't to much trouble. I am dissapointed you deleted it because I was curious about the character and, like other wikipedia users, actually care about who the article is about. There are other characters in that series that still have their pages! Why delete the main character's page??? Contact me at mhuff1294@gmail.com as soon as possible to discuss the matter. --Deeply dissapointed user —Preceding unsigned comment added by 60'smusic (talkcontribs) 18:00, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

The article was posted for speedy deletion because it did not have any context, did not make much sense, did not assert notability and did not have any third party references whatsoever. If you feel the person/character deserves an article, then feel free to write one following the rules for asserting notability. -- Alexf42 19:05, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

I am still not convinced that site reports League games only, which is the only value accepted. The proper place to deal with issues like this is the dispute resolution page (or if you prefer, maybe WP:FOOTY where people will have more knowledge of the subject). -- Alexf42 12:49, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

The proper place to ask for that is at WP:AIV. It seems to me you have a dispute going on. Both are in possible violation of WP:3RR. You should not come to one admin for help but post in the proper pages and follow the rules. -- Alexf42 18:44, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Greetings, Alexf. The IP in question has already been reported at the Administrators' 3RR page, and also for AIV. And if behaviour such as the abuse displayed above goes on, he might just as well get a Witiquette alert. Sorry about all that, Rsazevedo msg 19:02, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

I would like to undelete this - She is a well known figure in Taiwan. (Notice the ZH link?) - She is a celebrity and actress (that should have stated the importance)

I feel the nomination for CSD and the deletion itself were done in error, so I would like to undelete this article and add press sources. About 48 hours from now if I do not receive any reply I will undelete the article. WhisperToMe (talk) 18:24, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

Pai Ping-ping has been undeleted as per your request. Notice that as written at the deletion point, it did not assert notability and had no RS, nor any editor requested a hangon. That is not to say that it cannot be asserted of course. If you feel it can get to that point I see no problem with it. Cheers. -- Alexf42 21:11, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

I recently submitted a short bio of myself to Wikipedia, which was promptly deleted due to "blatant copywrite infringement". Well, I wrote the bio on any other site that you may have found it. What prompted the entire mess was that when I was searching through "Colburn School" and clicked on my name, there was nothing on Wikipedia, so I thought I would update it. I took the same bio used for Colburn and the LA Phil, which I myself wrote, updated it, and posted it. I am the original author. Any assistance would be appreciated in resolving this problem.--MrClean62 (talk) 07:19, 12 May 2008 (UTC)—Preceding unsigned comment added by MrClean62 (talkcontribs) 07:14, 12 May 2008 (UTC)

article on web site removed

I don't get it ... other similar articles (on adult websites) still exist on Wikipedia, such as: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xtube http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mattsmodels.com I'm not sure why I just wasted a couple of hours working on the orgasm.com article. Please clarify the difference between mine and the two examples above. There are quite a few adult web site articles that are in the category Erotica_and_pornography_websites. It seems to me that all or none should be allowed. Or at least popular ones with an alexa ranking under 10,000. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Orgss (talkcontribs) 21:12, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

You must provide independent (third party) reliable sources that are verifiable and assert notability for the site. Just "because some other similar pages exist" is not a valid argument. -- Alexf42 21:57, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Curious

You deleted the article Irving Kristol Award and I am curious as to why it doesn't constitute being an encyclopedia entry. Gautam Discuss 22:51, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

It was marked for deletion under A1 (no context). The article literally said: "The Irving Kristol Award replaced the Francis Boyer Award in 2003."
That is not an encyclopedic article. No context, no references, nothing. If you think the award is notable (I've no idea what it is) and want to write an article about it, I would suggest you read about Wikipedia's policies and guidelines to learn what is expected of it. Good luck. -- Alexf42 00:55, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
Ah,I see. If you really were curious, you could have clicked on the Francis Boyer Award (Which I created as well) to learn about the award, but I see your point. Gautam Discuss 05:31, 17 May 2008 (UTC)

Would it be possible to restore Powerfolder?

Dear Alexf I am sorry to disturb you but our wikipedia page was removed by you. We are a little confused by this: we didn't thought that we are violating some rules by describing our usecases. All our competitors are doing so. and we thought it could be good to give a description of what our program does we tried to be not advertising we only tried to tell the facts. we also named the limitations.

We are willing to do everything to make the page fit your rules. Please give us some information how to do so. We are an Open source application and we are not having a big marketing department. please dont punish us if one of our members made a mistake. It might be me fault that and i am sorry that i caused you work but please dont punish my team for my mistake.

Best Regards Bernhard Rutkowsky Nakaita (talk) 13:36, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

I restored the article but you must immediately address Wikipedia's concerns. You did not place a {{hangon}} tag as required and there is no guarantee that another admin would not delete it as it is an ad. It seems to me you do not understand the rules and that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. The article is an advert and has no assertion of notability. It is not that you have to "fit my rules" as you put it but Wikipedia's. It is also not a punishment as you said but just following the rules. Also, please remember to sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~). -- Alexf42 15:45, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

I see that has already been taken care of by another admin. The place to report vandalism is at AIV, where admins are on call checking it often and acting promptly. Leaving a message on someone's Talk page is not effective as it may not be read for a long time, as the user may not be as active as you'd like. -- Alexf42 21:12, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Profy speedy deletion

Hi, Svetlana from Profy here. You have recently speedy deleted a page on Profy, a pretty new blogging platform that has already received some user attention and attention from mainstream media (in addition to lots of prominent blogs) - for example, I have just recently been quoted in a Business Week article. The page was created by one of our users and he admitted in a private message to me that he made a mistake by blatantly copying content from our About page. But what I can not agree with is that the page relates to web content - instead, the page is intended to describe a new web product that both our users and press find notable enough to have an entry on Wikipedia. So again, while I agree on the Copyright infringement (though as the content owner I would have been happy to issue a proper permit to use the content - if only I knew how to do that) for this entry, I can not agree that it is A7 so I will appreciate you removing it since as far as I understand it, it may prevent other Profy users from trying to edit the page in the future. Thank you! --S Gladkova (talk) 13:53, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Hello. It was speedy deleted as A7 (non-notable) as all it said is that it is a web product that is in Beta. That, and the lack of any independent, third party, reliable sources for verification, show that notability was not asserted. Your understanding is incorrect in that the article can be re-created if it asserts notability. Just because there is some new piece of software out there, does not mean it is notable enough by default. Please remember Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a listing of everything out there. The deletion stands. -- Alexf42 16:24, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

Lakeview Homes article deleted?

Hiya,

So I created an article earlier about Lakeview Homes which you deleted, saying it was blatant advertisement. I was looking for info about Lakeview Homes and could not find anything so thought I would add a page about it so info could be collated over time. Also kind of starting to flesh out info of communities in the Toronto area. But that was deemed inappropriate?

I see lots of wiki articles about companies, even home building companies ([1] for example) so I don't see how this is inappropriate. Could you please explain?

Thanks,

Tommyf17 (talk) 00:10, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

The article in question did not assert notability under company rules. Just pointing to similar articles is not good enough. It must assert notability on its own. All it said is the name of the development company and location, and a link to their website. That smack of advertisement, not encyclopedic material. -- Alexf42 00:17, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
Well I was going to add to it when I had more time (Now, after getting home from work, for example) to make it full of more information of the kind I was looking for earlier today, information that others may also be looking for. Is it worth me even bothering now?
It is not an advertisement, I am not affiliated with them at all.
Quite disheartening to have your first article deleted... Tommyf17 (talk) 00:35, 21 May 2008 (UTC)
Don't despair. It happens to all of us. Please read up on the rules. If you believe it to be notable, you can work on it offline or in a subpage in you User space until it is ready for prime time, else it will be quickly tagged for CSD as you saw. -- 00:55, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

AdvertPRO

Hi, you deleted my article on AdvertPRO saying it was blatant advertising. I am curious as to what you considered advertising about it? It contained nothing more than a description of AdvertPRO, a brief summary of the products history, and a sidebar with information about our company and a link to our homepage. Articles with the same basic information have been accepted for other ad servers as you can see here so I don't understand why AdvertPRO can't have one too. Also, my last article was not the same as the first one I posted which was deleted. I assumed that first one wasn't accepted because I included a list of three key features in a list (thinking that sort of thing was relevant to a products description) and figured that was what was perceived as blatant advertising, so I removed the list and largely rewrote the article. Renegadeinternet (talk) 00:12, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

The article on AdvertPRO did not assert notability under WP:CORP. Pointing to similar articles doesn't work. It must assert notability on its own. Had no third party references, no citations from reliables sources, you get the idea. -- Alexf42 00:25, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Thank you!

Thanks for "using the tools" so promptly. I'll move the book review into the space. I've cleared up the POV in it. I'll get around to sourcing and reviewing it up to a decent standard eventually.

In the even longer term, I'll see about volunteering to join the "housekeeping roster" myself.

Article was deleted because it was a blatant copyright violation. The new article as it stands as of this writing does not assert notability, it has several style problems and has a lack of references. One of them (from smh.com.au) does not even relate to the person as far as I can see. Please read about the Five Pillars, [[WP:YFA] and WP:MOS. -- Alexf42 04:06, 26 May 2008 (UTC)
It seems you may also have a COI here. -- Alexf42 04:09, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi AlexF, If I had included information from secondary references, would it have been OK? As for style, I apologize, I have a graduate degree in journalism and should have looked for your style guide. Please, if you have time, can you explain the COI as it relates to me personally? As a financial contributor to your organization, I really would like to uphold the qualifications of your site. Also, why was a clarification I added to the "traditional art" page redirect not reviewed or published? You might want to look into it since traditional art is not necessarily defined as folk art. Thanks and take care. Marie750 (talk) 15:13, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

First of all it is not my site but everybody's. I'm just another editor, as you are, plus also a janitor in this place. I do not know much about traditional vs folk art as it is not my area of expertise, so I'm not the person to make a ruling on that. I am, as an editor, concerned with the quality of Wikipedia and with following the rules and protecting the project. As per COI, your name is shared by the artist, maybe a coincidence, but being the only article you seem interested in so far, it made me wonder. As per your references, please read on the articles and rules I pointed to, especially the ones about notability which must be asserted for every article. -- Alexf42 15:19, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi again,

Actually, I submitted one article and a stub. When I eventually learn this system and with the availability of time, I will be more than happy to submit more content. Can you please point me to the person(s) responsible for the "traditional art" page so I can discuss this article? Also, I don't see anything in the deletion log for the second deletion of my article. I will rework it and add the necessary references. Marie750 (talk) 16:04, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

There is no "person responsible" for a page. Anybody can edit anything. That's why it's a wiki. There are thousands of volunteer editors to write and maintain these articles. If you have a question on any particular subject, go to the Talk page for the article and discuss it there. If you have general questions please see: Wikipedia:Questions.-- Alexf42 17:57, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Probably the weakest question you will ever have received

Hi, I notice people getting blocked for 31 hours; why that particular duration? Abtract (talk) 23:17, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

It's a perfectly valid question. The software offers blocking in increments (24hr, 31hr, 55hr, 72hr, etc). 31 is popular I guess. -- Alexf42 00:59, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Page deleted

Hello,

I recently posted a page for the Gibaran Learning Group and it was deleted on the basis of blatant advertising. I noted that other institutions have managed to post listings of the same calibre and not been deleted. The article was meant to merely be a background for those wishing to learn more about the institution.

Please advise if this will not be allowed and what style would not be classified under the same code.

Hi, I'd just like to enquire as to why the page I creted, 'Gibaran Learning Group' was deleted. The page was done in a similar format to that of other educational institutions and not as advertising. Please review the deleted page and if it is still classified as advertising perhaps give me the guidelines to edit as I believe it is straight forward information not persuasive material.

As stated above (you should continue with your previous message instead of starting a new one on the same subject), the article read like an advertisement: "Visit www.xxxx.com for more information". Did not assert notability under WP:CORP on its own merits, without sounding like an ad. Pointing to similar articles doesn't work. You must show references, and citations from reliables sources. What are you talking about? The guy was given a final warning and blocked once before. Does he need to be re-warned every time he commits vandalism? Corvus cornixtalk 21:09, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

What I meant was that the guy had been blocked for a couple of day on 7 April, then nothing, no warnings, for almost a month and half. I see he was indef now, which is what I would have done on his next vandalism act. Thanks for asking. -- Alexf42 00:01, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

Article on Beth Dustan Fitzsimmons that you deleted

I am one of the authors of the cited publication and a former deputy director of the Commission. The cited publication is an official publication of the US Government and as such it is in the public domain and not subject to copyright.

I responded promptly to an earlier inquiry about the copyright status the publication. I am surprised that you deleted the article without making an inquiry or reviewing the history to see that such inquiry had already been made.

Can you restore the article or advise me how to have it restored? JudithRussell (talk) 15:20, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Judith C. Russell

Response in your page. -- Alexf42 16:26, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

Thank you! Can you link me to instructions or a sample article including a hangon so I can see how to do this? JudithRussell (talk) 22:07, 31 May 2008 (UTC)Judith C. Russell

I am a new user, as you can probably tell. This article is still deleted and am I not sure how to get it restored. Once it is restored, I can add a statement on the public domain status of the content, as I have done in citing the same source publication on the page for the US National Commission on Libraries and Information Science.

Thank you for your help. JudithRussell (talk) 12:44, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
