Request for comment on Talk:La Luz del Mundo

Hi there! I invite you to participate in the request for comment on Talk:La Luz del Mundo. Should you wish to respond to the invitation, your contribution to this discussion will be very much appreciated! Ajaxfiore (talk) 17:21, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

Carolyn McCarthy

Re: Hello, I'm Anaxial. I noticed that you made an edit to a biography of a living person, Carolyn McCarthy, but that you didn’t support your changes with a citation to a reliable source. Wikipedia has a strict policy concerning how we write about living people, so please help us keep such articles accurate. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. Anaxial (talk) 21:54, 22 January 2013 (UTC) -- I hope I'm responding to your message to me correctly (I've never done this and just created an actual account to respond, so I apologize if I'm doing this wrong). Anyway, you reverted the the edit I made to Ms. McCarthy's page. Specifically, I added the following parenthetical with respect to her support for education: (even though she lacks even a bachelor's degree). Your reversion was predicated on the fact that my addition lacked a source. I'm not sure exactly to source a negative (your advice on this would be much appreciated). The Washington Post bio for Ms. McCarthy (http://projects.washingtonpost.com/congress/members/M000309) states that her education is LPN, Glen Cove Nursing School, 1964. It appears that this reference is repeated on a number of pages; and is the only evidence of Ms. McCarthy's secondary education that appears to exist. Ms. McCarthy's official Congress biography page lacks reference to any secondary education or degree. See http://carolynmccarthy.house.gov/biography/ Here's the thing -- an LPN isn't a degree, it's a license. By that, I mean that in order to become an LPN, one must complete a vocational training program, and pass a licensure exam. So while Ms. McCarthy attended Glen Cove Nursing School, and was ultimately licensed as a practical nurse, she did not (and could not) receive an LPN "degree" because no such degree exists.

Ok, so here's my question: Given that she doesn't have a college degree, how is its absence cited?

Thanks, Tracinda

I think what you'd need to do is find a source that says that it's relevant. Some reliable source that says "she is known for her education work despite not having a bachelor's degree" or something to that effect, since it's the "despite" that's the core of the claim being made here. Does that make sense? Anaxial (talk) 18:21, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

Wierd problem

I fall asleep and after some time I get a feeling that I'm waking up. However I feel paralysed either in my full body or a part of it.. I know its a kind of a dream.. I've read about sleep paralysis, but the surroundings are so damn real. Something that I was in just before going to sleep.. For example, I walk into my room after class n just lie down.. a few min later I fall asleep with a note in my mind saying that its just going to be a short nap - a few minutes maximum... Later on I find myself waking up, thinking that a few minutes have passed by and I need to get up now, only to realize that I cant! Also I get this feeling that my parents are in the other room, they should not see me like this.. I feel this tension bottling up inside me, and then I find me telling myself to calm down otherwise something might just explode or rather it would soon be over if I just relaxed.

Just now I had a dream that I was paralyzed in my face.. My face felt swollen..unable to move.. just dropped down like a sack on my shoulders. My whole body was trying to find a solution to make it good again.. And just then, I woke up with a heavy breath an realized it was a dream again..

My question is, does this happen because a nerve in the neck is pressurized or blocked while sleeping improperly? or what might be the reason?

I've observed that I get such experiences mostly when my head is mis-supported or when I'm sleeping in a haphazard manner.. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.12.246.223 (talk) 12:35, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

Why is wikitravel an invalid source?

I think wikitravel is pretty accurate. Why do you think it's invalid and what do you define as a "valid source"? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.121.64.15 (talk) 20:52, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

Wikitravel is not a valid source for the same reason that wikipedia is not a valid source for it's own articles. Some guidelines on identifying reliable sources can be found here. Anaxial (talk) 20:57, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

"American mountain deer‎"

Is there anyway to get the article at "American mountain deer‎" moved back to the genus name where it was?--Kevmin § 08:34, 28 May 2013 (UTC)

Absolutely. You can make the request here. Anaxial (talk) 08:44, 28 May 2013 (UTC)

"You Can't Stop the Reign"

The ghost writing of the song "You Can't Stop the Reign" by the Notorious B.I.G. is common knowledge, and needs no citation. B.I.G. himself appears on the track, and Shaquille O'Neal's rhythmic patters and rhyming technique are identical to those of B.I.G., and do not match the rhythm and rhyming he uses in any other song. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.232.23.5 (talk) 19:14, 30 May 2013 (UTC)

I'm not saying it's incorrect, only that it needs a citation. If it's really "common knowledge" it shouldn't be hard to find a reliable citation - in any event, it requires one, no matter how "well known" it is. Anaxial (talk) 19:19, 30 May 2013 (UTC)

I suppose that by that logic, we should have to remove Joe Biden's birthday from Wikipedia until someone provides a citation? 99.232.23.5 (talk) 20:24, 30 May 2013 (UTC)

There already is a citation for that at Joe Biden, so yes - it's citation #1 in the references. It's also pretty easy to find another; for example, this one would do: [2]. Presumably you have this information from somewhere, so why not cite that? Anaxial (talk) 22:06, 30 May 2013 (UTC)

Ah I didn't see the citation because it was later in the article. Unfortunately the people who have detailed knowledge of the subject matter don't tend to publish anything. It's very obvious listening to the song, but anyway, I've found a radio interview where Shaquille O'Neal talks about Biggie editing and re-writing his verses. 99.232.23.5 (talk) 03:15, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

Unfortunately I'm really bad at this and I don't know how to add the citation. Either way, the information is trivial. 99.232.23.5 (talk) 03:17, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

If you can give me the details, I could add the citation for you, if you like. Anaxial (talk) 07:09, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

Here is the link to the interview. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mN2LZ65gLFo Thanks for the help! 99.232.23.5 (talk) 00:38, 3 June 2013 (UTC)

??

I was told to write an edit summary , and i wrote , i was told to explain and explained , So i did what i was told , i don't care what you threat , Go and Block , I'm not afraid from you.178.61.44.13 (talk) 20:38, 26 June 2013 (UTC)

Your explanation doesn't seem relevant, since you're disputing something the article doesn't say. If you have evidence that the flag in question is not really the flag of the Syrian National Coalition and Interim Government (which is what the article says it is), then you'll need to present that. You're probably best off presenting your evidence on the article's Talk page rather than repeatedly deleting the section and references in question. Anaxial (talk) 20:43, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
My friend the problem isn't i want to prove that this is the flag of the opposition , i know this flag is a historical flag not the flag of syria now , also the flag of syria isn't a ba'athist flag or assad flag , it's the flag of syria , the other one is not official , So please i'll not just repeat what i say everytime , don't undo my edit .178.61.44.13 (talk) 20:49, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
The article does not say it is official, so that's not relevant. Anaxial (talk) 20:51, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
There are wrong informations , It says that syria flag is a ba'athist flag while it's not it was created by jamal abdulnasser who is an egyptian president , Second the other flag isn't official , Third do you understand me correctly ? , or what is happening in syria ? .178.61.44.13 (talk) 21:02, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
Why would the flag being unofficial mean that it mustn't be included? Anaxial (talk) 21:04, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
Why the old flag of US isn't Incuded ?? , Because it's not the official flag ? , That's the same thing , this flag can be included through historical flags in syria , it's not syria flag , it's a historical flag .178.61.44.13 (talk) 21:07, 26 June 2013 (UTC)
The old flag of the US is included at the Flag of the United States page, though. If your issue is with the way it's labelled on the page, then that's fine, especially if you can get consensus for a new phrasing on the Talk page, but please don't just delete it. Anaxial (talk) 18:09, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

The IP is keeping at it, and I've commented on the IP's talk page about that: User talk:198.228.216.177. I'm not sure what else to do about the IP, considering that reporting him or her at Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism would likely be in vain because the IP doesn't seem to be trying to vandalize the article. Primogeniture

Hi Anaxial,

Yes I have made a change in Primogeniture as a result of the new baby born of Prince William and Duchess Kate. I have picked up on the term while watching the news where it was announced that a major change affecting the new born was that it did not matter his/her sex as the Primogeniture right was modified and extended to both sexes. Hope this helps.

So long as you have a reliable source stating that section 1 of the Succession to the Crown Act 2013 has now come into force, and is no longer waiting on the relevant statutory instrument from the Lord President of the Council, you're fine to add it, including that reference in your text. If you have a suitable published reference, and aren't sure how to add it, I'll be happy to help. Anaxial (talk) 08:37, 7 July 2013 (UTC)

  • Participation: Out of 30 people who have signed up for this drive so far, 18 have participated. If you have signed up for the drive but have not yet participated, it isn't too late. If you haven't signed up for the drive, sign up now!

  • Progress report: Thus far we have reduced the number of May/June 2012 articles to just 124 articles, so we're on the right track. Unfortunately, for the first time in GOCE history, the number of articles in the backlog has actually gone up during this drive. While all participants are currently doing a fine job, we just don't have as many of them as we have had in the past. We have over 500 editors on our mailing list, but only 18 editors who have done a copy edit for the drive. If you're receiving this newsletter, it's because you have an interest in copy editing. Join the drive! Even if you only copy edit one article, it helps. Imagine how much progress we could make if everyone chipped in just one article.

Adding new articles

Am I allowed to add new articles on the Wikipedia site? Ribonucleicacid563 09:01, 27 July 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ribonucleicacid563 (talkcontribs)

  • Yes. You will probably want to read this page first, to find out what you need to do, and to make sure that your new article doesn't get deleted because it's missing references, or you haven't categorised it, or something. You may find this page helpful as well. Anaxial (talk) 10:09, 27 July 2013 (UTC)

Trigger-happy reverter?

Please do not remove information that is very easy to source by just googling for it. Just add the sources instead. Thanks — Timwi (talk) 09:06, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

I did perform a google search - the results I found said that the claim was false, not that it was true, so, since there were no cites saying otherwise, I thought it better to delete. I've amended the article to give both sides, since you have now provided cites to the contrary. Anaxial (talk) 18:27, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive update

GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter.

Participation: We have had 58 people sign up for this drive so far, which compares favorably with our last drive, and 27 have copy-edited at least one article. If you have signed up but have not yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: Our target of completing the 2010 articles has almost been reached, with only 56 remaining of the 194 we had at the start of the drive. The last ones are always the most difficult, so thank you if you are able to help copy-edit any of the remaining articles. We have reduced the total backlog by 163 articles so far.

Special thanks: Special thanks to Stfg, who has been going through the backlog and doing some preliminary vetting of the articles—removing copyright violations, doing initial clean-up, and nominating some for deletion. This work has helped make the drive a more pleasant experience for all our volunteers.

Your drive coordinators – Dianna (talk), Stfg (talk), and Dank (talk)

about "Müllers"

Dear Editor!

I noticed that in enwiki articles (and therefore in other Wikipedias as well) in some of the infoboxes of animals not the proper zoologist's name is shown.

For example in the article List of authors of names published under the ICZN.

Salomon Müller (1804–1864) is shown as "S. Müller", while Johannes Peter Müller (1801–1858) is simply "Müller". However, in many articles the "Müller" link points to "Salomon Müller".

I think that the link "Müller" should refer to "Salomon Müller". There are two examples for it: Exilisciurus; Celebes Dwarf Squirrel.

The following zoologists can be found in their list:

DenesFeri (talk) 08:54, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

You are, of course, welcome to make any amendments to the taxoboxes for which you have info from a reliable source (and the ICZN is certainly such a source). Anaxial (talk) 18:12, 12 September 2013 (UTC)

OK, thanks! But I wanted some opinions. But now I see that I must take in my own hands this matter. Regards. DenesFeri (talk) 08:46, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

Please just look at this [3].DenesFeri (talk) 09:01, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

Write in the search Salomon Müller, and you won't find it. DenesFeri (talk) 09:02, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

My real question is, in this page [4] that Müller is Salomon Müller or Johannes Peter Müller? DenesFeri (talk) 09:04, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

Salomon, in that particular case. Or, at least, it says "S. Müller", if you follow the link, and the animal in question is Indonesian fauna, so that seems the most likely candidate. The other example you listed above, the Celebes dwarf squirrel, is cited to "Müller & Schlegel, 1844". Since Salomon Müller published some work with Hermann Schlegel in 1844, and (so far as I know) J.P. Müller did not do so, again, I think that Salomon is the likely person referred to here. Anaxial (talk) 19:30, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

OK, thank you! DenesFeri (talk) 10:17, 14 September 2013 (UTC)

Another question. If in the Mammal Species of the World Salomon Müller is abbreviated as simply Müller, than I shoudn't change his abbreviation Müller in this list, List of authors of names published under the ICZN. And change Johannes Peter Müller J. P. Müller? DenesFeri (talk) 10:27, 14 September 2013 (UTC)

MSW3 might use that abbreviation (being a mammalogical source, and not concerned with fish), but that doesn't mean that all other sources do. It depends on how likely they think ambiguity is - for instance, so far as I can tell, J.P. never described any mammalian species, so the editors of MSW3 doubtless concluded there was no risk of confusion. On the other hand, ichythyological sources (such as FishBase) do seem to use "Müller" alone to refer to J.P., presumably because Salomon didn't describe any fish species. On the gripping hand, though, I see nothing wrong with adding "J.P. Müller" as an alternative to the list since he is cited that way at, for example, yellowspotted catshark. Anaxial (talk) 10:48, 14 September 2013 (UTC)

And Philipp Ludwig Statius Muller just Statius Muller? In the Hungarian wikipedia this zoologist is abbreviated as Statius Muller, no P.L.S.Müller. What is your opinion about this? DenesFeri (talk) 10:31, 14 September 2013 (UTC)

Hi,

Thank you for your help! Now I know how to separate Johannes Peter Müller from Salomon Müller, I also know that Otto Friedrich Müller is abbreviated as O. F. Müller. But Philipp Ludwig Statius Muller in some places Statius Muller and in some places just simply Muller. How can I tell in his case? Can you tell me some explanation in his case also? Regards. DenesFeri (talk) 11:07, 16 September 2013 (UTC)

That's fine, and please continue to update the page. However, please don't remove the 'Orphan' tag while the page is still orphaned. How many times it has been (or will be) updated has nothing to do with that. Anaxial (talk) 23:10, 8 November 2013 (UTC)

English Notability vs Neutral point of view

There is also WP:NPOV set of rules. As long habitual lynx habitation is predominant to Russia, it has a right for its own view, which should be neutrally respected. As long as we do not rename the article it does not break WP:NC. It just meet WP:NPOV, where notability in English is not required, because it's not about English-based country article. Elk Salmon (talk) 17:19, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

I don't agree that it's appropriate to give such prominence to foreign language names in articles, unless the name tells us something particularly interesting (for instance, concerning local beliefs about the animal). It's not, to my mind, an NPOV issue, because this is the English language WP, and is written in the English language. Lynxes are found in lots of countries, and we can't, in my opinion, list all of the local language names for the animal in the lede. It might be worth mentioning in the body of the article, if lynxes were unique to Russia, but even that isn't the case. If NPOV really applied to this sort of thing, we'd have to say "the Eurasian lynx, or rys, or lodjur, or gaupe, or ilves, or lūšis, or bayağı vaşak, or 歐亞猞猁 is a medium-sized cat..." because we'd have to be fair to all countries where it is common or has a "long habitual habitation". In short, I respectfully disagree. Anaxial (talk) 19:55, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

GOCE December 2013 Blitz wrap-up and January Drive invitation

December Notes from the Guild of Copy Editors

The December blitz ran from December 8–14. The theme for this blitz was articles tied in some way to religion. Seven editors knocked out 20 articles over the course of the week. Our next blitz will be in February, with a theme to be determined. Feel free to make theme suggestions at the Guild talk page!

The January 2014 Backlog elimination drive is a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on January 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on January 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to copy edit all articles tagged in October and November 2012 and complete all requests placed before the end of 2013. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits at least one article, and special awards will be given to the top five in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", "Number of articles of over 5,000 words", "Number of articles tagged in October and November 2012", and "Longest article". We hope to see you there!

Coordinator election: Voting is open for candidates to serve as GOCE coordinators from 1 January through 30 June 2014. Voting will run until the end of December. For complete information, please have a look at the election page.

A little fast on the Twinkle buttons?

Hello,

I made a mistake trying to fix the fact that the "solution" to which the Plateau Systems directs is not the chemical sense of solution, but the solution to a problem in the workplace. Kindly allow me to make the edit. Please note this is not revert-warring. Thanks, Anaxial! 65.201.123.212 (talk) 20:14, 31 December 2013 (UTC)

Folding on ILADS

Thanks for putting time into my question. I am folding, because the consensus was clearly that the org was fringe. I was not interesting in lifting ILADS or interested in taking sides on the controversy, I was interested in getting the facts straight. But I also completely respect that the process was fair, and I completely respect that I was not able to convince anyone that they had extensive science and reputable people. I had not developed the skills to sort out what was supposed to go where in WP. I certainly was not able to communicate the cost of the Lyme wars to patients. But Wikipedia is not about that, it is not the place for first truths, it is a place for accepted truths, and that is good. 300,000 people get Lyme per year, and 10% get treated (per CDC). Some of the rest will have horrible lives.

Thanks for looking in. I have only good things to say about the process.

Apologies for content deletion!

Did not intend for that to happen, was editing on mobile and seem to have accidentally deleted it :( Thanks for the quick revert! 103.6.159.113 (talk) 20:32, 10 January 2014 (UTC)

That was me, and I'm writing code for the Wikipedia Android app (which has editing (anon and logged in)). The Inia code was supposed to do just a null edit, but obviously was buggy. Will make sure I'm on testwiki from now on for these. Apologies much! YuviPanda (talk) 20:36, 10 January 2014 (UTC)

Edit Warehouse 13

I added In print and Literature section and details

Which you moved to Novels.

Thing is that the Novels section is for warehouse 13 novels and the comics section is for warehouse 13 comics.

This is neither. it is a completely stand alone book in which the characters just appear.

I looked on other series pages to find the best way of editing the page to indicate this and copied a common style.

Change it back if you agree.

Cheers.

I'm a noob here, this was my first wikipedia edit, it lasted all of 10 seconds & I was just showing my GF when it disappeared :-(

March GOCE copyedit drive

Notes from the Guild of Copy Editors

The March 2014 backlog elimination drive is a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles in need of copyediting. The drive begins on March 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on March 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goals are to copyedit all articles tagged in December 2012 and January 2013 and to complete all requests placed in January 2014. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copyedits at least one article, and special awards will be given to the top five in the following categories: number of articles, number of words, number of articles over 5,000 words, number of articles tagged in December 2012 and January 2013 and the longest article. We hope to see you there!

Sinkhole

Please provide clear guidelines as to why my Northwood sinkhole edit is being rejected. I have added a citation from a local newspaper and am a witness!! Sharma3107

The information on the sinkhole is included in the "notable sinkholes" section, so what you will need is evidence that this is a sinkhole of major significance and (to quote the article) "one of the largest sinkholes in the world". A report to that effect in a national or international news source would be sufficient. Thanks. Anaxial (talk) 23:51, 28 March 2014 (UTC)

aye aye

hi anaxiial,

if you look here: http://a-z-animals.com/animals/aye-aye-/ , you'll notice they did mention it is endangered, not near-threatened. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vinethemonkey (talkcontribs) 03:11, 6 April 2014 (UTC)

However, your edit stated (uninintentionally, I'm sure) that the IUCN currently considers the aye-aye to be Endangered, which, according to the source provided, they do not. If some other international or national organisation considers it such, we need to know which one, and mention it in the text, not in the IUCN status box. However, the aye-aye was considered Endangered until 2008, so I suspect the source you are quoting is just out of date. Anaxial (talk) 07:31, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
Ok, that's cool. Thanks for the clarification. Vinethemonkey (talk) 15:36, 7 April 2014 (UTC)Vinethemonkey

Reasons for Removing text from Al Bin Ali

Hello Anaxial,

The reason I removed the text because the original text from the source itself mentions "Utub" and not "Al Bin Ali", and as you know the "Utub" is a confederation mixture of tribes, so I placed them in the "utub' section. As far as Invasion of Kenya, I placed it in "Isa bin Tarif" section since he is the one considered with the conquest.

Regards,

Dear Anaxial,

I am writing in connection with your editing on the link I added to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divisov

I had added a link to McNulty fortepianos which you removed as not appropriate. I had added it on the ground that link to Yawa factory was there, and McNulty fortepianos is another highlight (in this case cultural) in our village. It is featured in newspapers, TV, etc internationally as it is produsing (first in the world) copies of famous Composers pianos. I can send you big press list, but don't want to take your time, so only one link from czech TV https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-LqGfUkN_M

Would you kindly explain me what is the difference between Yawa motorcycles and McNulty piano factory? Thank you Helena — Preceding unsigned comment added by Boisselot (talkcontribs) 19:20, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

Yes, you're right; I hadn't spotted the other inappropriate link. I've deleted that one now as well. Thanks for the heads up. Anaxial (talk) 19:23, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

Your vandalism is not appreciated

Instead of just winging around Wikipedia on your broomstick and reversing edits (I have looked at your history and that appears to be what you basically do), why don't you bother to take the time to do a search - Cooksey being chairman, and the bribery scandal, are well well known. Idiot. Go get a life and find something else better to do. It is because of people like you that Wikipedia is not nearly as useful as it could be.

Then provide a source. You can't add claims to BLP articles without a source, even if they are "well known". Anaxial (talk) 20:49, 17 June 2014 (UTC)

I provided a number of citations that are meant to demonstrate that this group is clearly significant minority opinion per WP:DUE

Please let me know if you still feel this is fringe. It is awesome that people are looking at information to make these decisions.

Yaumeni Lazuka

Dear Anaxial, when I found an error on other WP projects, I always try to correct it. Yauheni Lazuka is a Belarusian swimmer. But there is no Yaumeni first name nor in Belarus or Russia. It is a misspelling. If there are rules I did not know about blanking on WP:en, please tell me where there are.--93.7.78.219 (talk) 19:49, 26 August 2014 (UTC) ... Before threatening me of blocking... Thanks.--93.7.78.219 (talk) 19:50, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

The policy on blanking is here: WP:BLANK - essentially, a page can only be blanked if it is libellous, which a simple misspelling isn't. As I have told you, you are perfectly entitled to ask for the page to be deleted, but this must be done here: WP:AFD. Anaxial (talk) 19:55, 26 August 2014 (UTC)

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit to Lanier High School (Austin, Texas) may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "[]"s and 1 "{}"s likely mistaking one for another. If you have, don't worry: just edit the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

Article: Fox - Educational Assignment for Cornell University: Online Communities - Request for Help

Hello Mr. Anaxial, my name is Sarah and I am part of a group of students who are working to fix the article on foxes. This is for our class Online Communities at Cornell University. We aim to make the C-Class article a B-Class or even better! We are working to expand the fox's characteristic section (adding more anatomy and behavior); revamp the conservation section; and add an "urban foxes" section (foxes in urban settings and their impact on humans/pets). We are new to Wikipedia editing and would love some help, guidance, and/or support! Anything from suggestions on new sections or sections to edit to coding/grammar issues will be greatly appreciated!

If you're curious about our assignment here it is: Online Communities Assignment

Hope to hear from you soon! MSarahKurahashiSofue (talk) 20:27, 25 September 2014 (UTC)

I'll keep an eye out, and help when I can. The page is on my watchlist anyway, so it's no trouble. Anaxial (talk) 18:04, 30 September 2014 (UTC)

Reliable sourcing

Thanks for your input. It is common knowledge that the name 'Didelphis' derives from the forked glans. Why not require a reliable source for 1 + 1 = 2? Where do you people draw the line?? 73.49.1.133 (talk) 18:48, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

The problem is that there's a sourced statement already in the article saying that the name derives instead from the double womb of the female, and claiming that "delphys" in fact means "womb", not "penis". If you have a source contradicting that, by all means provide it, and it can be discussed on the Talk page so that we can determine which source is the more reliable. We copy edited 83 articles tagged in the target months; July, August, and September 2013. As of 01:01, 1 December 2014 (UTC), the backlog stood at 1,974 articles, dipping below 2,000 for the first time in the Guild's history (see graph at right). Well done everyone!

Just noticed 2014 complaint about "Opossum"

I fail to see why one must provide citations to justify what is common knowledge to experts, or even quasi-experts, in the field. Perhaps, if more experts penned and/or moderated articles, we wouldn't be so clamorous over "missing" citations. 73.49.1.133 (talk) 17:24, 20 May 2015 (UTC)

Unfortunately, the rules on WP are that you do need a source. This is doubly true when, as in this case, the article already has a link to a reliable source that unambiguously states that the information you want to add is incorrect. If you can provide a source that backs you up, then by all means discuss it on the Talk page, and we can determine which of the sources is the more reliable, and correct the article accordingly. Whales

Earlier you commented on how my recent edit to Whales deviated from the Manual of Style. Were you referring to my conversion of tonnes (metric tons) to tons (short tons)? While this issue is still continuing, would it be allowed to keep my most recent version of the subsection on there, because it contains a lot of info that I forgot to include when I was writing it originally (size, weight...)?Dunkleosteus77 talk to me! 00:20, 27 May 2015 (UTC)

No, although I don't think that's necessary to list both tons and tonnes, and it helps to use the {{convert}} templates for size and weight and so on (which you keep deleting for some reason), since they will ensure everything complies with the MOS. But that's not what I was referring to.
However, your edits did use capital letters in animal names and section headers: 'Toothed Whale', 'Blue Whale', and so on. This is not permitted on Wikipedia; you should use 'blue whale' (etc.) in text and 'Toothed whale' for section headers and the beginning of sentences. You were also using numerals (2, 3, etc.) for single digit numbers when you should spell them out (two, three, etc.). This isn't a problem when you do it the first time, and I appreciate that you are working in good faith, and weren't aware of the rules, but it does become a bit of a problem when other editors (not just me) spend a lot of time correcting your mistakes, and then you repeatedly revert them back to the wrong form. Anaxial (talk) 17:33, 27 May 2015 (UTC)
Okay, I'm pretty sure I've fixed the problem. By the way, when I change something on a large scale (such as links which I did earlier), I use my sandbox copy, and I'm pretty sure that's why recent edits have been reverted back. If you change anything else, let me know because I want to keep my sandbox version up-to-date. Dunkleosteus77 talk to me! 03:36, 28 May 2015 (UTC)
Do you have whale on your watchlist? That will tell whenever any changes are made. Anaxial (talk) 17:41, 28 May 2015 (UTC)
Yeah, but I always forget to check. By the way, do not change "Hubb's Beaked Whale" back to "Hubb's beaked whale" because the link won't redirect me to the "Hubb's Beaked Whale" article if it reads "Hubb's beaked whale" (I don't know exactly why...) Dunkleosteus77 talk to me! 22:29, 28 May 2015 (UTC)
There are lots of people editing the page; they can't all advise you whenever they make an edit. Just don't overwrite other editor's changes when you make an edit yourself - I would advise against cutting and pasting wholesale over other editors' work, which may be considered disruptive behaviour, or even edit warring. Just edit the page as you go along, and everything should be fine.
As for Hubbs' beaked whale, writing it with the lower case is not optional - writing "Hubb's Beaked Whale" is not allowed, and it must be changed if anyone writes it like that. Besides, as you can see from the link I just created in the previous sentence, it does direct to the relevant page, so there shouldn't be a problem. Anaxial (talk) 18:33, 29 May 2015 (UTC)
Strange, it was red before, and it shows up red when I change it on my sandbox unless I do Hubb's beaked whale... Dunkleosteus77 talk to me! 22:29, 29 May 2015 (UTC)
That's because you've mistyped the name (an easy mistake... we all do it sometimes). I suppose I could fix it, so that it doesn't redlink from your sandbox, but I'm not sure that it's a common enough problem to be worth it. Anaxial (talk) 22:49, 29 May 2015 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
