Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.

Recent changes

• EventStreams is a new way to show activity on Wikimedia wikis. For now it works with the recent changes feed. It will do more things later. It will replace RCStream. Tools that use RCStream should move to EventStreams before 7 July. [1]

Problems

• The Firefox add-on Firefogg can cause problems with the Upload Wizard. This will not be fixed, because Firefox will not support Firefogg in the future. The Upload Wizard will no longer work with Firefogg. [2]
• Tool Labs and Wikimedia Labs databases will be under maintenance on 15 February. This will start at 17:00 (UTC) and last for about six hours. Some tools could have problems during or after this. [3]

Changes this week

• The TwoColConflict extension is a new way to solve edit conflicts. It makes it easier to copy and paste the relevant text to the text field. It will come to Meta and German Wikipedia this week. It is already available on MediaWiki.org. It will come to more wikis later. [4]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 14 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 15 February. It will be on all wikis from 16 February (calendar).

Meetings

• You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 14 February at 20:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes

• Page Previews will be turned on for logged-out users on the Catalan, Greek, Russian, and Italian Wikipedias in the middle of February. Page Previews shows readers a short part of a linked article when they rest their mouse pointer on the link. This is to help them understand what it is about without leaving the article they are reading. Page Previews used to be called Hovercards. It will come to more wikis later this spring. [5]
• The Developer Wishlist is a list where developers prioritize tools they need. The voting closes at 14 February 23:59 (UTC). This process is only for developers.

• You can read the 2016 product summary from the Wikimedia Foundation Product group to see what they did with things they said they would work on in the annual plan.

Can you lower the protection of template:infobox to "template protection", so template editors can edit it? --George Ho (talk) 21:07, 11 February 2017 (UTC)

Wow, that one was a long time ago! Happy to - template protection wasn't around in 2006 and per WP:PP it looks like it's recommended for these cases. Might be worth running a report to switch it on all these old heavily-used ones... Andrew Gray (talk) 21:40, 15 February 2017 (UTC)

Recent changes

• The edit summary box is now a little bit bigger. This is to make it follow the Wikimedia design guide. [6]

Changes this week

• Page Previews will be updated on 23 February. This fixes many bugs. Page Previews can be turned on as the Beta Feature called Hovercards. [7]
• There has been a problem where the CSS of gadgets has been loading twice. The Gadgets extension has two new options: type and peers. The type option solves this problem. You can use peers to create gadgets with more than one style module. Read more about type and peers. [8]
• OAuth will handle blocked users in a more consistent way. [9]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 21 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 22 February. It will be on all wikis from 23 February (calendar).

I was wondering if you could please help in regards to this topic: On the southern American English page, Me, along with Kelthan and Dubyavee ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Southern_American_English#Delete_image ) opposed taking the map off. It was originally removed without any edit summary. Since it was sourced, I heard you can't remove content without justification. That's three opinions against one that have given feedback on this. I took this to Bilcat who reverted our edits. I politely contacted Bilcat on his talk page (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:BilCat&action=history), and he immediately removed and ignored my message. Can you please help? If you look at the history page https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Southern_American_English&action=history You can see both Kelthan and I were against taking the map off. And there was a previous discussion about this on the talk page here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Southern_American_English#Delete_image where Dubyavee disagreed with taking the map off. Bilcat then reverted this falsely claiming the consensus was against this. The map was originally taken off without given and edit summary, despite it being sourced. Can you please help? Libraries Without Borders

Hello, I'm very new to wikipedia, and I wanted to correct the Libraries Without Borders article on the site. Bibliothécaires Sans Frontières means Librarians without borders, a separate, different organization. So, I wanted to change the title to: Bibliothèques Sans Frontières, or Libraries Without Borders as the translation of the page "Bibliothèques Sans Frontières" that already exists in French.

I'm not much of an online editor, but I do translation work and wanted to contribute. I don't know who created this page, but both the English content and the redirects to this page indicate that Bibliothécaires Sans Frontières page title is a typo that should be the English version for Bibliothèques Sans Frontières. Even the links on the page send me to their websites.
