Copy editing a single section

Will be glad to have this section copy-edited for better coherence and flow. TrangaBellam (talk) 10:24, 3 February 2023 (UTC)

Hi @TrangaBellam:, I took a brief look at the section; it's well-written overall, doesn't rally need a full c/e. Changes I'd make there would be to remove the editorialising words such as "even", "besides" and "notwithstanding"; and break up the long sentence at the end of the second paragraph. Otherwise, I think it's fine. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 07:38, 8 February 2023 (UTC)

William D. Hoard

Hi Bafflegab, thanks for doing the copy edit of William D. Hoard! It looks great! I did have jsut one question. I noticed you removed the word "the" from in front of the names of newspapers (striking "the" from in front of Jefferson County Daily Union, for example). Those sentences read kind of strangely to me now. I was wondering if you could explain why, more for my own curiosity than anything. Thanks again for taking the time! M4V3R1CK32 (talk) 23:52, 13 February 2023 (UTC)

Hi @M4V3R1CK32:, thank you; no problem. I usually remove "the" when it's not part of a proper noun; it's often (but not always) unnecessary. Even as a native English speaker, I don't know what the rule is here! I think in this case, "Jefferson County" seems to function as an adjective so we expect to be preceded with "the". But then, "the" could safely be omitted from "Jefferson County Airport", if there was such a place. I agree those sentences do sound strange so I'll go put it back. Good luck with the article and cheers, Baffle☿gab 01:06, 14 February 2023 (UTC)
I don't think there is a hard and fast rule on it. English is weird. Appreciate the help and the well wishes! M4V3R1CK32 (talk) 20:49, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

Iyarkai

Thank you so much for guidance in GA. Similar to Govindudu Andarivadele, another GA, I used references to mention "character name mentioned at timestamp" (for names that were mentioned in opening credits). I had to do this for Pasupathy and Freddy Odiyo's character because their names were mentioned in the film (twice for Odiyo who has an important role in terms of plot). I originally had not included Odiyo's name and had wrote that "Pasupathi as a priest" based on this source but that felt wrong because he is not a priest but a church father (head of church) and is referred to as "Father" in the film. Unlike in Hollywood films, this Indian film as many Indian films of that time did not list the names of characters in the end credits. However, I feel that their names can be included with the film itself as a source.

These characters appear multiple times in the film, so I feel that it would not do justice to avoid mentioning their names. They are credited in the film's trailer showing that their role is important. DareshMohan (talk) 12:32, 4 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi @DareshMohan:, no problem, I'm glad the GA review went well, congratulations on your achievement. If there are no character names in credits or other printed sources, it should be fine to reference them to the film itself. I'm not familiar with Tamil films of any vintage and I was unaware of the absence of character names in credits, so I'm sorry for any confusion. If the GA reviewer was happy, it is fine to do so. I didn't remember copy-editing that article until I checked the history and found my c/e was almost a year ago now! Anyway, keep up the good work, you're doing fine. :) Cheers, Baffle☿gab 20:00, 4 March 2023 (UTC)

Senate Pact 2023

Hi Baffle gab1978. I know you are a very busy person, but I would like to ask you a favour. Could you have a look at the article Senate Pact 2023, please? I don’t mean copy editing (it’s too soon); I wanted to improve 2 things: refs formatting and the infobox’s Pact members section. As for the latter, I wanted to make "Civic Coalition", "The Left” and "Polish Coalition" collapsible (to allow hiding/showing of their contents) instead of a horizontal list (with brackets), but to keep "Civic Coalition", "New Left" (not: "The Left") and "Polish People’s Party" (not: "Polish Coalition") bold text (i.e., "The Left" and "Polish Coalition" should be still non-bold, regular but collapsible text). However, I’m too unexperienced (and perhaps to dumb) to do that, haha. Thanks in advance for help. Regards, TaurenMoonlighting (talk) 21:36, 20 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi @TaurenMoonlighting:, thanks for your message. I don't know how to get collapsible items in infoboxes as they're not something I've often dealt with. You might be able to do that with the template {{Hidden}} but that may not work inside an infobox. Help:Collapsing and Help:Infobox may be useful. Perhaps consider a using bulletted list, which might be better in a short article; see Help:List. If you can't find out how to do it, you can ask at the Teahouse or the help desk.
The references in the article are correctly formatted but they should be placed next to the sentence(s) they support rather than at the end of the article; we call this inline referencing.
I'm not going to edit the article and I can't really help you further but I hope this reply is useful. Good luck with the article and cheers, Baffle☿gab 04:20, 21 March 2023 (UTC)
Thanks so much for all the advices, I appreciate it. The issue has been resolved. Could you have a look at the infobox, please? Does it need copy edit? The article itself will be expanded, and although I know it won’t be a GA, I hope to improve it in the future. Cheers! TaurenMoonlighting (talk) 23:00, 21 March 2023 (UTC)
No problem, @TaurenMoonlighting:, the infobox looks much better now; nice work! Infoboxes don't include prose so they rarely need copy-editing, and the article is clear and understandable so it doesn't need a c/e at the moment. I've fixed a few minor mistakes though. Good luck with the article and cheers, Baffle☿gab 23:26, 21 March 2023 (UTC)

DYK for 1st Armoured Division (United Kingdom)

On 26 March 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article 1st Armoured Division (United Kingdom), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the 1st Armoured Division of the British Army chose a white rhinoceros on a black oval as their insignia (pictured)? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/1st Armoured Division (United Kingdom). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, 1st Armoured Division (United Kingdom)), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Aoidh (talk) 00:02, 26 March 2023 (UTC)

@Aoidh: you've got the wrong user; I copy-edited this article last September but the DYK nom isn't mine. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 00:14, 26 March 2023 (UTC)
Looking at the history of that DYK it looks like your name was included in the initial nomination in the Improved to Good Article status by EnigmaMcmxc (talk) and Baffle gab1978 (talk). Nominated by Bruxton (talk) section, which was when carried over to the prep set for that same reason, which then of course got carried over again when I moved it to the actual queue. You weren't listed as the DYK nom, but as one of the editors who helped bring it to GA status. Feel free to remove this notice, but the notification was provided because the initial DYK nom specifically listed you. Thanks. - Aoidh (talk) 00:25, 26 March 2023 (UTC)
Ah, that would explain it; no worries, thank you. :) Cheers, Baffle☿gab 00:43, 26 March 2023 (UTC)

Britishers?

I am sorry to bother you about a very specific question regarding your usage of the term "Britishers" in your ce of Abdallah Khan. I had never seen this term prior to reading the changes you made and after some very limited Googling now understand that pretty much is the British equivalent to Frenchman. I also do think that the term is very useful in more difficultly structured sentences referring to groups of British individuals. My only concern is that at first I thought it was a typo, and given it archaic nature and obscurity, I worry that it might prove confusing and/or jarring to readers of articles. I am not posting this on the article's talk page because I am not concerned by its specific usage there, I was just curious about potentially getting your opinion on what its acceptable use cases are.

Cheers,

MagentaCat1 (talk) 22:17, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi @MagentaCat1:, thanks for your comment. I questioned myself there as well. It's useful when one wants a one-word demonym, a la Germans, Russians, etc., but "Britons" would also be acceptable. "Englishmen" isn't correct because John Malcolm was Scottish and Gore Ouseley was born in either Ireland or Wales.
Neither the Cambridge nor Merriam-Webster dictionaries flag it as archaic, but according to Collins, it is archaic and not-much-used in British English, but not in American English. There doesn't seem to be a particular national version of English in use in the article, and the subject has no strong ties to any Anglophile nation. Feel free to use "Britons" if you'd prefer. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 23:21, 28 March 2023 (UTC)
Britons usually refers to those living in Great Britain prior to the Anglo-Saxon invasion, although it can just apply to anyone British I feel it implies someone of more Celtic ancestry and would prove potentially misleading to readers. I do genuinely think you did manage to find the best term given the circumstances, and that the grammatical inconsistencies of demonyms are extremely annoying. Thank you for indulging my inquiry.
Cheers,

Korean Wave/GOCE Drive

Hi, I've seen you've updated the wordcount for my copyedit of the Korean Wave article. The article was over 20k words in prose and massively bloated when I began cleaning up the article. I've reverted the wordcount, but do let me know if there's any issue with my understanding of the guidelines. :3 F4U (they/it) 21:37, 31 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Freedom4U:, thanks for your message. I've just checked and I agree; over 20,000 words is correct and I can only apologize for my error. Having checked your c/e tonight, I think you did an excellent job of copy-editing and tidying the article; thank you. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 22:39, 31 March 2023 (UTC)

Thank you so much for your work!

Thank you so much for your edits on Jonathan Blow. I feel extremely grateful to have had an elite copy editor through the article with a fine-toothed comb; the result is a significantly better article. I also learned a lot from your edits too, whether it was "a lot of" -> "frequently", or "He looked into the alternatives to C++ at the time" -> He investigated alternative languages", there were so many times where I felt like palm-slapping my head when I saw how much simpler my prose could have been. Thanks too for not simply deleting many of the off-topic sentences but moving them to the talk page; when Jai and the sokoban game get enough media coverage to warrant an article I can just copy the sentences instead of rewriting them again. Your work from this editor is greatly appreciated! Neuroxic (talk) 13:16, 12 April 2023 (UTC)

Thanks @Neuroxic:, no problem – it's all in a night's work. :-) Don't worry, we often don't see these issues when we're close to the material; I'm very much the same when I'm writing anything. I'm glad the removed text and refs will be useful. I've never thought of myself as a elite copy editor but yeh, I'll take that, thank you. 😊 Glad I could help; good luck with your planned GA nomination. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 06:07, 13 April 2023 (UTC)

Copy editing drive - category for 'articles I can't progress but aren't completed'?

Hello - I started work copy editing a very long article. It still needs more work (multiple issues) but I would like to move on and work on something new. So it's not 'completed' (and I have left the 'copy edit needed' tag in place but nor am I 'working' on it. Is there an alternative way to record this? Thanks! Chaiten1 (talk) 07:37, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

Apologies - I have now placed this query in the correct talk section (for the GOCE drive) so no need to reply here Chaiten1 (talk) 08:09, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

Thank you, @Paradise Chronicle:, I'm glad you're following the c/e with interest. It took me a while to work out how to handle this one; I've moved a lot of text to the talk page that could be used to improve the articles of the individual films. This will take me a few more sessions to complete; I'll post on your talk when I'm done. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 11:50, 29 June 2023 (UTC)

  The Teamwork Barnstar
Iron Gwazi passed its FAC! Although I am a primary contributor to the article, your involvement was just as significant. The road to FA relies on community consensus and voluntary commentary. You dedicated your time and skills to help improve the article to its current condition. Without your input, the article would not have reached its status quo. You are a significant contributor! Whether you are a one-time commenter or contribute to other GA, PR, or FA candidates, I hereby award Baffle gab1978 with the Teamwork Barnstar! Thank you for your efforts to improve the Iron Gwazi article. Adog (TalkCont) 03:08, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
Your help with copy editing is greatly appreciated. Not only for Iron Gwazi but also for the quick action when Cobra's Curse was undertaking its GA review, as it was one of my newer articles to get reviewed, and it definitely needed the work. Along with everyone else, I thank you. Adog (TalkCont) 03:09, 19 July 2023 (UTC)
No problem, thank you for your note @Adog: it's kind of you to say so. I'm glad to hear the articles have been promoted to FA and GA status, congratulations on your achievements. It's always nice to hear when articles I've worked on get promoted; thanks again. :) Cheers, Baffle☿gab 05:20, 19 July 2023 (UTC)

Needed a help

Hey, you edited many of the articles, which needed copyedits in past, which were registered by me at WP:GOCE. I need small help in paraphrasing a paragraph in the Koeri article, i recently added. Will you please do this for this paragraph. Please visit Koeri and do the needful.:

Koeri and their sub-caste Murao participated in Kisan Sabha politics of early twentieth century. The Kisan Sabha, which worked for the peasant's cause against the ill effects of landlordism blended with Gandhian Non-cooperation movement during 1920. These peasant castes, who had long tradition of independence and caste solidarity were the one, who provided initial roots to Kisan Sabhas, which became instrumental in supporting peasant cause later. The traditional method of Nai-Dhobi band (disallowing of service of washerman and barbers) to enforce the sanctions on the landlords and use of their robust caste panchayats became a symbol of these peasant movement. Koeri leaders like Mata Badal Koeri became one of the founding leader of Oudh Kisan Sabha (Awadh Farmers Conference) along with Baba Ram Chandra. In the Awadh Kisan Conference of 1920, which was held in Ayodhya, Koeris participated in large numbers.

Hope that's useful. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 23:14, 21 July 2023 (UTC)

@Admantine123:, what did your last slave die of? ;-) :-) Okay, done, Baffle☿gab 01:32, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
Very sorry for becoming adamant in forcing you to perform various tasks. Actually, i am addicted to creating articles and doing large scale edits. But, several times i remain dissatisfied as far as copyedits are concerned. That's why some of the editors' talk page have become my favourite destination. Apart from you Fylindfotberserk is another guy, whom i ping regularly for such work. Thanks for Copyedits.-Admantine123 (talk) 01:37, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
No worries, good luck with the article. :-) Cheers, Baffle☿gab 02:07, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
Since pinged, I need to clarify that I help with finding sources, archives and maintenance work when requested by Admantine123. I typically do not do extensive c/e work, atleast not in caste and politics related topics  . - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 09:26, 22 July 2023 (UTC)

Suggestions

You were such a great help during Iyarkai (which is a GA!), can you help with Payanam (2011 film)? DareshMohan (talk) 18:18, 18 August 2023 (UTC)

@DareshMohan:, I may work on it eventually but I'm not very active at the moment so others at the Requests page may bag it first. Because you're still developing the article, I consider it unstable and not yet suitable for c/e. As you may see above, I don't accept direct requests for c/e. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 20:08, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
No problem. What was the standard -- how much of the article has to be written by the editor nominating it for GA? I think the article only if sources are found. DareshMohan (talk) 06:19, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
@DareshMohan: I don't think there is one but I'm not an expert on GAs; you'd best check there for the requirements. I don't understand your second sentence, sorry. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 06:49, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
I thought I had to expand the article by a certain amount but that is for Did you know nomination I think. Lol, I meant I think the article can only be expanded only if meaningful sources are found. DareshMohan (talk) 16:20, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
Yes, you are obviously thinking of DYK. You can use existing references to expand the article provided they comply with RS, BLP etc. That article has 38 sources, which should be enough to work with. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 20:45, 24 August 2023 (UTC)

Saiyuki (manga)

Hi @Baffle gab1978: I'm so sorry if i disturb you, But can you copy edit this article? I listed the article at WP:GOCE/REQ for copyediting on July 1, But so far no one has taken it. The article is in need of very in-depth copyediting. Thanks a lot. M.A.LasTroniN910 (talk) 15:23, 28 August 2023 (UTC)

Hi @M.A.LasTroniN910:, I've skipped this request because manga and anime articles can be difficult to parse, and I get confused and write the wrong things. This is also 120 kb and I don't want to take on any articles that long at this time. I might take it for the Sept drive though, if no-one else wants it. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 20:58, 28 August 2023 (UTC)

I have a question?

Hi @Baffle gab1978: since sep 6, It's been more than a week now and 1TWO3 Writer Has not done any copy editing on Saiyuki's article. is there no need to worry? M.A.LasTroniN910t@lk 03:52, 14 September 2023 (UTC)

@M.A.LasTroniN910 Hi, sorry my laptop broke and ceing the article with my phone is a pain. I'll get to it tomorrow. 123Writer talk 04:24, 14 September 2023 (UTC)
1TWO3 Writer, So, if your Laptop is damaged, I consider that you can no longer continue copy-editing Saiyuki's article. Have you found a solution? M.A.LasTroniN910t@lk 16:36, 19 September 2023 (UTC)

Golconda diamonds

Hi, few time before you copy edited Golconda diamonds, before nominating it for FAC could you please give few minutes to have a quick view of the article. Regards :) Omer123hussain (talk) 10:54, 3 October 2023 (UTC)

@Omer123hussain:, I don't accept direct requests for copy-editing (see above, second line). If the article contains inaccuracies like the ones Fram pointed out to you on the talk page, 1,000 GOCE copy-edits won't make it reach FA status. I politely suggest you work towards GA first and don't bother FA reviewers with it right now. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 19:52, 3 October 2023 (UTC)

Thank you!

Thank you so much for copy-editing Interview with the Vampire (Original Television Series Soundtrack). It's my first time to take on GAN solo, so I hope the new updates and your work will lead to a succesful nomination. - Yolo4A4Lo (talk) 05:38, 9 October 2023 (UTC)

Semicolons

If you're going to be a copyeditor, please review https://www.iup.edu/writingcenter/writing-resources/punctuation/using-semicolons.html, https://www.ccis.edu/student-life/advising-tutoring/writing-math-tutoring/introduce-quotations, and https://www.grammarly.com/blog/colon-2/. At Common Courtesy (album), Bipartisan Cafe, and Purr Cocktail Lounge, you introduced quotations with semicolons in multiple instances, which is incorrect. A Friend of the Family (miniseries), Jorge Sampaio, and Nicoll Highway collapse also had some misuse and overuse of semicolons, such as where colons are better to introduce closely-related clauses. Most of your other changes are great. Thanks! Reywas92Talk 18:30, 27 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Reywas92: thanks for your message. I precede quotations with a semi-colon because quotations generally rely on the rest of the sentence in which they sit, making the quotation a dependent clause. I also use a semi-colon to link dependent clauses – "The workers are on strike; they want a ten-per-cent pay increase". I use a colon in a sentence with two linked independent clauses that could stand alone as sentences – "My car blew up today: I'll have to walk to work tomorrow". None of the style guides you linked are mandatory on Wikipedia; other styles of punctuation are allowed. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 03:43, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
Okay, no, that is wrong. Do not introduce a quotation with a semicolon. I have literally never seen that used before, what style guide are you using?? If you want Wikipedia's guide, please see MOS:QUOTEPUNCT and MOS:SEMICOLON. A semicolon joins two independent clauses, so at According to Oregon Wine Press, "From day one, the café...", "According to Oregon Wine Press" is not an independent clause (it introduces the quotation), so a comma is needed, not a semicolon. Both of your examples here are correct, except in the first one, both "The workers are on strike" and "they want a ten-per-cent pay increase" are independent clauses because they could stand alone. Copyedit

Hi, can you copy edit Okariki Okaru? I want tips for a GA. DareshMohan (talk) 06:56, 11 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi @DareshMohan:, I don't take direct c/e requests. I note you're still working of the article so there's no point doing a c/e right now anyway. I may grab it for the January drive if it's stable and still at REQ. My tip for GA is to read the GA criteria, make sure the article complies with them, and nominate when you're ready. My opinion now is that it doesn't yet comply. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 18:27, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
